Drop off your child after 7:45am. Arrive before 8:15am or your child will be counted tardy. Late arrivals must be signed in by an adult. Send us a note about changes in transportation, illness, and/or contact infor- mation. Students will not be dismissed from the of- fice after 2:15 unless a note has been sent in stating they have an appointment. Do you ever find yourself listening to the weather report, yet often find- ing the actual weather is not what you were expecting? Our weather tem- peratures have been up and down and often very wet! As always during cold and flu season, layers are the best when it comes to adequately pre- paring our boys and girls for the fluctuating temperatures and conditions outside. Please remember to send hats and gloves for that extra and much needed touch of warmth. If you know of any child in need of a winter coat, please let the school office know. Speaking of cold and flu season, we want to take this opportunity to remind families of the necessity in sending notes for excused absences. Any time your child is out sick, it is necessary that you send in a note stating that, so that we can mark them excused. Please also understand that Maryland schools are now being scored on student attend- ance, regardless of the absences being excused or unexcused. School-wide attendance records are monitored and individual student records that indicate excessive absences must be screened at the school, and sometimes even the county level. Please know that no one on either level enjoys putting families through the questioning process, espe- cially when there are valid needs for absence. So, please make certain children are in school when they are well; and when they are sick, they return to school with a note from you or your pediatrician stating such. Communication is key. Thank you for rec- ognizing the need for regular school attendance and assisting us by supplying the re- quired documentation for your child. As a reminder to families, when inclement weather is extreme enough, a school delay/ early dismissal or cancelation may be necessary. On days such as this, a phone message will be sent out by Wicomico County Public Schools, and a message will be posted on the WCPS website, www.wcboe.org for your reference. Often local media news sta- tions will eventually post these delays as well, but for timely notification it is neces- sary that we have your correct phone numbers to ensure you get the call. Please make certain that you always have updated phone numbers, email, and address in our school office so that this can occur. I want to congratulate our school families and staff members on our dismissal routines this year. As you know, Car rider hang tags were distributed at the start of the year and must be used by everyone picking their child up in the car rider line. Early dismis- sal can only be marked excused if for medical or case by case emergency situations. Please send a note in to your childs teacher on the date of the planned early dismissal. As a reminder, all early dismissals require being signed out in the office by an author- ized adult by or before 2:15 p.m. to ensure safe office practice and dismissal proce- dures for the whole school. By now you should have received your childs term 2 report card which was distributed on Thursday, January 30 th . We ask you to please contact your childs teacher as soon as possible if they have indicated the need for a conference or if you have any ques- tions regarding your childs current performance. Have a fabulous February! Sincerely Mrs. Judy Nicholson

First Grade

In February, we will be reading about friendship, feeling, and our community with fiction and nonfiction texts. We will be continuing to apply letter sounds to reading and writing simple words as well as working on sight words. We will be focusing on recognizing and decomposing teen num-bers (14=10+4) and counting aloud to 100. We will be solv-ing addition and subtraction word problems. We will be working on reading our sight words- all, but, from, have, his, on, said, that, there, was, with.

During the month of February, we will stay warm by keeping busy! In reading, we will continue learning about nonfiction texts as well as reading stories about standing up for ourselves and using our imagination. We will con-tinue with our reading and phonics strategies and build on our comprehension and fluency this month. In math, we will continue to work on and master our addition and subtraction facts. Along with our facts, we will work on place-value concepts for tens and ones, adding 2-digit numbers, and explore measurement. February is also full of exciting science units that focus on our health. These units will include; learning about our heart and keeping it healthy, and nutrition. Our social studies unit will focus on President’s Day, American Heroes, and citizenship. As you receive your report cards and we move into our 3rd marking term, remember to contact your teacher if a conference is requested and keep reading every night! Thank you for your support this year!

During the month of February, we will be reading about the pleasure of giving. We will also do an author study by Tomie DePaola. We will write opinions of the stories we have read. In math we will count coins and make change. We will also use an open number-line to add and subtract. The children will continue working on becoming fluent with their addition facts as they try to earn their way into the “Minute Club.” Mrs. Barbara Barga, our 4-H representative, will involve our students in a hands-on study of animal senses. The students always have great fun learning with her! In science we will continue to learn about mammals and in social studies we will study the importance of diverse cultures. Please continue to read with your child every night and record the number of minutes on their reading calendar. Also, please replenish any school supplies your child may need. Keep safe and warm this chilly month!

Brr... it is cold outside…sometimes! This year it seems the weather changes every day along with drastic changes in tempera-ture. Please send your child to school dressed for the weather. We go outside for recess whenever we can. It is a good time to check with your child about needed supplies. Many are running out of pencils and glue sticks. In addition, we would appreciate any donations of tissues and gallon bag-gies. Thank you in advance for your cooperation with this matter. Math News As we jump into February we will be working on multiplication and division strategies for the 0-10 facts, along with fractions. Great games to work on for fluency of facts can be found on the EM4 Math Games. Your child should have a log on. Recommended Games this month: Baseball Multiplication, Beat the Calculator, Multiplication Top-it, and Name That Number. Reading News Keep reading, reading, and reading, at least 20 minutes a night. Once you read, remember to log those minutes on your monthly reading calendar.

February is here and we are going to be busy. We will con-tinue with our theme How Structures Are Built. Talking about the different kinds of structures, parts of differ-ent structures, and how to make structures. We will con-tinue learning about the beginning, middle and end of the story through different read aloud stories. Also, review letters, rhyming words, and syllables. We will continue to talk about different feelings, how we can calm our bodies and think of solutions when we are upset. In math we will continue to build sets up to ten, recognize the plus one pattern, 2D and 3D shapes. Thank you to all the families that have been reading each night. Continue to read each night and record the minutes on your reading calendar. Keep up the good work!

Good Dolphin Character Makes a Difference!

The character trait for the month of January was self-discipline. There were several different ways our students showed they had self-discipline; such as, choosing to finish an assignment before starting recess, focusing on her work and ignoring others, following the rules when working with Mrs. Davidson-Hopkins, staying on task and following directions all day long.

I visited each classroom to discuss how we can all make good choices and show how we can control our emotions. We discussed that when we feel strong emotions, it is difficult to think clearly. Therefore, we focused our attention to stop, name your feeling and calm down. We practiced calming down by belly breathing, count-ing and/or self-talk. The PK and Kindergarten students helped “Oscar the puppy” follow the steps to calming down in many different situations, while the 1st – 3rd grade students discussed belly breathing and ways to use self-talk in a positive way.

Congratulations to the following students for showing outstanding self-discipline. In pre-kindergarten, they are Edward Jay, William Tyndall, Rita Felmey and Jona-than Thomas. In kindergarten, they are Lily Rayne, Leila Poor, Mason Derrickson, Mason Cox, Rhyan Parsons, Cameron Linton, Emily Wilkerson and Jadon Corley. In first grade, they are Bentley Disharoon, Sadie Cockey, Malia Gray, Calie McDaniel, Nevaeh Henderson and Jillian Flower. In second grade, they are Alyssa David, Kaylee Fitzmaurice, Kara Taylor, Mollie Adams, Vayda Langdon, Arianna Wells, Au-tumn Conway, Gabe Stewart. In third grade, they are Adalyn Calloway, Raymond Francia-Gomez, Edwin Ramon-Arroyo, Madison Wallace, Zoey Prestas, Gianna Hot-ton and Kadence Davis-Harshman.

The character trait for February is compassion.

Sincerely,

Chris Thompson

The ARTS are Happening

at WWS!

Co-teaching lessons this month include: learn-ing about Argentina and the Argentine Tango, learning about Trinidad and learning about So-ca and Calypso music and dance, and using movement to show the patterns of the sun. We are also working on costumes and arti-facts from around the world to be used dur-ing our spring parade. Students are using a variety of arts including dance, drawing , sing and painting while making a “virtual trip” to other parts of the world.

Kids Heart Challenge

Our school is proud to partner with the Amer-ican Heart Association with Kids Heart Chal-lenge. Over the next few weeks, our students will be having fun learning about their hearts with the Heart Heroes while raising money to

help fund lifesaving research. Our school goal is to raise $5,000, and in addition to helping the American Heart Asso-ciation, our school can earn free PE equipment. Students can earn their own Heart Hero Characters this year by using the new mobile app (download the Kids Heart Challenge app) or visit heart.org/kidsheartchallenge to sign up and raise money online! Just for signing up to save lives, your students will earn a free wristband! Plus, the mobile app brings all of the Heart Hero Keychains and wristband badges your student earns to life! All donations are due on Friday, February 14th and our event day is Friday, February 14th. Thank you for

helping a great cause!

P.E. Reminder

It is crucial for the safety of your student that they wear shoes appropriate for P.E., recess and the general safety at school. Over the last few weeks, some students have come in boots, Ugg type boots, boots with heals and dress shoes. Below you will see the letter days your child has P.E. I hope this helps to get us all back on track! February is National Children’s Dental Health Month!

A few good oral health reminders from Colgate Oral Care Center:

1. Brush at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste for at least two minutes, especially first thing in the morning and be

fore bedtime.

2. Floss every day – usually at bedtime.

3. Limit the number of times you eat snacks each day.

Visit your dentist every 6 months for an oral exam and professional cleaning. More information is available at www.colgate.com

Below is a handy monthly calendar from the American Dental Association to help you remember to brush your teeth twice a

day.
