ב מ M E S S A G E F R O M O U R P R E S I D E N T In Pirke Avot 2:5, our sages teach: “Do not separate your-self from the community.”
As such, our obligation and commitment as a synagogue is to reach out to the commu-nity, so that separation is replaced with engagement. The beauty of our shul must extend beyond its walls to reach the hearts of all our
congregants, with all their diverse interests, needs and locations.
As our Temple President, I am deeply grateful for, and impressed by, the depth, breadth and ability of our lay leaders and volunteers who work selflessly to better ensure that fellow Jews and their families are not separate from the community.
In the last few months alone, the following groups have stepped up to deliver meaningful experiences for so many. Here is a sampling:
• MARVY youth group hosting 100 Jewish teens from throughout the Pacific Northwest
• Temple Sholom University: Shabbat dinner & discussion
• Sisterhood Shabbaton Weekend with the Sisterhood Choir
• Family Shabbat • Musical Mitzvah Day at the Louis Brier • Sisterhood Choir performance at the Weinberg
Residence • 60 Plus Group lunches & fascinating presenters • Feasting for Funds, Sisterhood’s fundraiser
• Family Chanukah Concert and Temple Sholom School celebration
• Our Kitchen Club, Bubbe’s Kitchen & the Soup Schvesters
• Men’s Club Poker & Pastrami Night Each of these is much more than just an activity; it is the product of many people working together selflessly to create meaningful experiences for people who long to connect, on some level, to their Judaism and their community.
And, of course, our upcoming Dreamers and Builders gala on May 5th, honouring Susan Mendelson & Jack Lutsky, will not only bring our community together, but provide vital funding towards outreach so that we may continue to provide exceptional programming and reach those who may still find themselves separated from the community.
I would like to thank all the people involved who have conceived of, developed and delivered these magnificent activities, along with any activity at Temple Sholom that serves as the bond that connects us to each other and to ourselves. As Rabbi Dan told me the other day: “These acts of outreach and caring for each other are the arms and legs of Temple Sholom; they are how we move and hold our community together. They emanate from the heart.”
Indeed, they do. This work is truly a gift and a mitzvah of the highest order. Our sages would be proud.
Yasher koach! Jeff
‘Teenage Concern that Nourished Community Action’
The following excerpt, from an interview with Susan Mendelson printed in The Scribe (the annual journal of the Jewish Museum and Archives of BC), tells of her first venture into selling food. It also illustrates her propensity for philanthropy and her dedication to the Jewish community.
“When the Six Day War happened, when I was still living at home, in 1967, I made a bake sale in our backyard to raise money for Israel. And that was probably the first time I had anything to do with
food commercially. My mother said we made about a hundred dollars, which was a lot in 1967. My mother
says, ‘Well, yeah, but what did we spend on ingredients?’ Because she picked up the tab for the ingredients and the neighbours all came. But it was great… feeling like you could do something.”
We thank Susan for reminding us how to turn concern into action. Together we are stronger. We are looking forward to celebrating our vibrant community. Hope to see many of you there on Sunday, May 5, 6:00pm at the Vancouver Convention Centre.

W I S E A G I N G - N E W G R O U P S TA R T I N G I N M A R C H Change and transition are an inevitable part of our lives and this continues to be true as we move into our later years. Aging can be challenging. We may need additional guidance and tools to help us navigate this time with acceptance, strength and wisdom.
Many synagogues and Jewish communities across North America have recognized this challenge and are offering Wise Aging programs. These programs are based on the book titled “Wise Aging: Living with Joy Resilience, and Spirit” written by Dr. Linda Thal and the late Rabbi Rachel Cowan of the Institute for Jewish Spirituality.
The Wise Aging program being offered by Temple Sholom will use this book as we gather together in small groups for discussion and reflective work to help prepare ourselves to meet the challenges of aging as well as to find opportunities for deeper meanings and new joys.
This eight week program will be led by Temple
Sholom mem-bers who have completed the Wise Aging course, as well as Facilitator Training. We will address such topics as cultivating healthy relationships, forgiveness and reconciliation, health and body image, qualities for well-being, living with loss and conscious dying. In addressing these topics we will use meditation, journaling and other contemplative tools that can help us live the years ahead with joy, resilience and spirit.
An information session will be held on Sunday, February 10 at 1:30pm at Temple Sholom. Come hear more about our Wise Aging Program to see if it is a good fit for you.
Register at templesholombc.shulcloud.com/form/wiseaginginfo or call 604.266.7190.

WHAT THEY DON'T TEACH IN PRENATAL CLASS The Key to Raising Trouble-Free Kids and Teens by Anne Andrew Launching February 13 2019!
Temple Sholom member and former Temple Sholom School Principal, Anne Andrew, wrote this book because of her experience as the mother of a troubled teenager. In seeking a way to help her daughter, she learned valuable insights she wished she’d known when her children were still young. It’s for parents of children of any age, but particularly for those who worry about a family history of depression or addiction.
Many people think that nurturing a child’s self-esteem is the answer. However, Anne discovered that the crucial message we must get across to children is that they are inherently worthy as human beings. Self-esteem is easily lost, but our Inherent Worth (IW) never changes. This concept is not only the key to happiness, it is also the key to prevention and to recovery.
You need to know that the negative beliefs that drive our behavior and our children’s behavior, and which can lead to addiction, get started in early childhood. While you can’t prevent your children from taking on these beliefs, you can help to counter them when they do.
When you read this insightful parenting guide, you will learn how to: • Understand your child’s behavior and how it can
be changed. • Apply the Choose Again Six-Step Process to turn
off your hot buttons and deescalate conflict. • Improve communication and banish blame. • Strengthen your relationships (not just with your
children). • Gain a new perspective on your role as a parent.
What They Don’t Teach in Prenatal Class also |offers practical strategies that will help raise a kinder, happier, generation.
“Read this book, reread this book and practice the
steps Anne Andrew teaches here, and you will find that child rearing becomes in so many ways a per-fect vehicle for self-healing.”—Diederik Wolsak, founder, Choose Again and author of Choose Again: Six Steps to Freedom.
“This is a profound and authentic book that can change your life. Here are wise words from some-one who learned the hard way how to raise a child with an inherent sense of worth.”—Peggy O’Mara, founder, Mothering magazine and www.peggyomara.com
