Greetings Meredith Hill Families,

Here we are, already at the mid-point of our school year! Our

teachers are currently conducting mid-year assessments in

IRLA (reading) and iReady (reading and math) and are

working on first semester report cards, which will be coming

home on February 8th. Our report cards tell you which

standards your child has been working on this first semester

and how they are progressing toward meeting standard.

Students receive a 1-2-3-4 rating on each standard assessed

and do not receive an overall English language arts or math

“grade.” This scoring by standard gives you detailed

information regarding which standards and skills your child is

meeting, and which skills and concepts they are still

practicing.

Washington state law requires that we indicate if you child is

currently meeting benchmark standard in reading and their

current reading level on report cards. We assess our students’

independent reading level using the “Independent Reading

Level Assessment” or IRLA. If you have any questions about

your child’s report card please do not hesitate to contact their

teacher or me; and keep reading, reading, reading at home!

February is when I review my classroom observation data and

have mid-year conversations with teachers about their

professional and student growth goals. We celebrate

successes and work together to determine the best

professional development strategies and partnerships to

increase teacher capacity with high leverage instructional

strategies.

Please mark your calendar for next month’s Coffee with the

Principal on March 4th from 9:30 – 10:30. We celebrate

successes and discuss important questions from parents.

Please note that SLCs are just around the corner. They will be

in March. Please look for information that will be coming

home soon. Please make sure that you are signed up for

Parent Vue, as this will be our next push in March.

Warm Regards,

Helen Babbin Interim Principal

Teams have formed and are practicing for our building’s Battle of the Books, which will be on Tuesday, April 2nd. Each team member needs to read at least four of the titles and complete a story map for those books. Books are selected from titles nominated for the Young Reader’s Choice and the Sasquatch Awards. Upcoming practice sessions are on February 7, 19, 27 and March 7, 15, and 27th. The team that wins our building B.O.B. will represent our school at the district BOB on May 1st at Todd Beamer High School.

Super 3 Research Process Third through fifth grade students are applying the Super 3 Research Process while completing their class projects. First the students plan by choosing the topic and understanding the requirements of the research assignment. Next they access websites and books for information about the topic, take notes, and complete the project. Lastly, they review the rubric and reflect upon the quality of the project. This process can be applied when purchasing a new item, making a decision, or learning new information about a specific subject. Be sure to ask your students about the project they are currently researching!

17 of Meredith Hill's mathletes gave up a Saturday to join mathletes from across the region at Thomas Jefferson High School on Saturday, January 19th in a competition. They worked hard and had a lot of fun. The following mathletes placed in the top 10 for their division: Kailen competed in the 4th grade division earned 4th place in Ciphering and Individual Test. Graham competed in 5th grade division placed 10th place Individual Test. And our 5th grade team consisting of Graham, Ryan, Nathan B., and James competed in the 5th grade division and took 10th place.

Congratulations to our mathletes for a job well done!

Attention Chaperones It is the time of year when our classes begin going on field trips. This is always a fun time for our students. All volunteers and chaperones must have an approved WSP background check on file.

Applications are available in the office and are free to the applicant. The approval takes a few weeks so be sure to get yours in early.

Not Enough Books For our Scholars!!

“How can this be?” Well, many of our books are not ready to be in the hands of our students.

“Why?” Because we need to determine the level of the text so that students are matched up with books that they can read independently, before the books go into the classrooms.

“Can I help?” Yes, you can!!!

We need volunteers to search the IRLA database of titles, to identify the level of each book. Once the level for the book is identified, we designate that level with colored tape and get it into the class-rooms; into the hands of our readers.

“But I don’t have a lot of time.” That’s o.k. Share with us 30, 40, 60 or more minutes and we’ll get this job done! If you’d like to work from home, we can even accommodate that too.

Won’t you help us get more books into the hands of our Meredith Hill Readers? Contact Mrs. K. Wilson, our instructional coach, to volunteer, 253-945-3216.
