Anakie Hall Friday 16 February @ 7.30pm Discussion on the condition of Ballan Road with representatives from State Government, Vic-Roads and local council. Got concerns about the on-going condition of the road? If so, attend this meeting. Letters and emails - including near misses, blown tyres, dangerous incidents witnessed etc - can be sent to the community house now to be forwarded to the authorities, prior to the meeting. More information is available from Anakie Community House. Call 5284 1359 or email [email protected] At a recent meeting of Golden Plains Rural Women’s Network we asked these questions: should we disband; are we no longer relevant? Historically, the group was established to support rural families during drought. It has since provided opportunities to connect, share stories and build stronger communities. There have been various social events with excellent speakers. A Geelong Community Foundation grant funded a disability family fun day - a wonderful event for disabled children and siblings. The mental health of families affected by difficult conditions was a focus. To this end, training in a mental health first aid course was delivered at Hesse Rural Health. Businesses across the Shire attended to develop effective strategies to identify and support clients exper- iencing stressful situations, requiring support and understanding to cope. Recently the group recognised many farmers are struggling to maintain water supplies for livestock. Many farm dams are dry and farmers are utilising water points. During the drought, a bore and tank was established at Warrambeen - it has been well used by farmers but the single tank is struggling to keep up with supply. In conjunction with Bannock- burn Connected Communities and the Shire, a second tank was purchased to secure water for dry times and fire. This has all been achieved by a very small committee, meeting on an as- needs basis to support the community. The committee is seeking expressions of interest in the continuation of the group. If none is forthcoming at its April meeting the group will commence the process of winding up its operation. There will be difficult times in the future - droughts and hard times. The Golden Plains Rural Women’s Network is recognised for past success. Now it is up you. Do you want this group to continue? We are happy to help but need interest and involvement. The next training will be held for all members at the station on Sunday 4 February at 9am. It is with great pleasure we announce the 2017 winner of the Ron Clarke Training Award to Rhiannon Hodges for excellent attendance & training participation 2017 was a fairly average year for the brigade; we attended 27 incidents. Thanks to the community for helping reduce the risks we face living where we do. As mentioned, fire activity in Anakie has been fairly quiet - thank you again for your help on this. Remember to report any suspicious activity to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 and

call 000 if you see fire/smoke. Members have attended several incidents outside the Anakie area, including a couple of motor vehicle accidents and a large grass fire in the Parwan area. Our station has being manned twice so far this summer - a big thanks to members for helping out. Keep updated on incidents via the Vic emergency app, CFA website, local radio and our Facebook page. Any member of the community interested in joining, feel free to come to the station any Sunday morning at 8:30am to have a chat. David Walter, 1st Lieutenant Anakie CFA

1st Anakie Scout Group Term 1 2018: well, it’s going to be difficult with Amanda gone, as she did most of the organising of extra things. But, with two new helpers to our group, we should be fine. Here are a couple of highlights: * Founders Day, a pool gathering and a party with our region

cubs and scouts - photos next issue. What is Founders Day? “Worldwide in nearly all Scout associations, Founders Day is celebrated on 22 February, the birthday of Robert Baden-Powell, 1st Baron Baden-Powell (born in 1857), the founder of Scouting and, coincidentally, also of his wife Olave Baden-Powell (born in 1889).” Wikipedia. * We will partake in Clean up Australia Day on Sunday 4 March - if you see us picking up along Staughton Vale Road, give us a toot, will you? Or, better still, stop your car and pitch in and help us! Much more will be mentioned the next issue of the AA!
