UPCOMING EVENTS

DID YOU KNOW…

This month our thoughts turn to Mardi Gras also called Shrove or Fat Tuesday and Valentine’s Day.

Mardi Gras (Shrove “Fat” Tuesday) refers to events of the Carnival celebrations, beginning on or after

the Christian feasts of the Epiphany (Three Kings Day) and culminating on the day before Ash

Wednesday. The association between pancakes and Shrove Tuesday may have arisen as it permits

foods which are discouraged from being eaten during the Lenten season, such as butter, eggs, and fat

to be used up. The specific custom of Christians eating pancakes on Shrove Tuesday dates to the 16th

century. In celebration of Mardi Gras/Shrove Tuesday, we will have our traditional Mardi Gras

Children’s Parade on Tuesday, February 13th starting at 5:30 p.m. with music, dancing, masks, beads

and so much more. We will then enjoy some delicious pancakes cooked by the Men of Grace Episcopal

Church for only $5.00 per plate. Come out and meet our new Vicar, Rev. Scott Painter.

Hope you join us!

Valentine’s day is originally meant to honor St. Valentine or the Feast of Saint Valentine. This annual

holiday is celebrated to express love for our sweethearts. It has become a day to express love and

gratitude to anyone we hold dear…friends, spouses, teachers, children, or any other acquaintance.

For National Children’s Dental Health Month, Dr. Piya Ghandi of West

University Pediatric Dentistry, accompanied by none other than the

Tooth Fairy will be visiting our school on Monday, February 5th to give a lively and

fun presentation to our 2 – 4 year old children about the importance of

brushing their teeth and dental health. After her visit, the kiddos will truly look

forward to brushing their teeth!

February is our annual Food Drive month!

In support of our Children Rock Our Community, please

donate non-perishable food…we will have boxes in the Narthex lobby for your

donations. We are collecting for the Food Pantry at Braes Interfaith Ministries…so

many people in our city and community go hungry every day and whatever you can

contribute will make a huge difference to them!

Thank you so much for caring!

Thank you! Thank You! Thank You!

Love is in the air as always in the First Steps class as we prepare to celebrate Valentine’s Day. Our little kittens are doing exceptionally well. Ramsey

is singing his all-time favorite song, Old MacDonald! You can always count on a smile and silly dance from Patrick and Gabriel, while Henry enjoys taking

the lead on naming colors at circle time. He likes showing off his skills! Guess who is walking….Micah. Hurray for Micah! We have so much going on in

our class. It’s always filled with excitement and joy! The month of January was a cool month. We made “snow” and delicious melted snowman cookies.

Our first ever Science Fair was a blast! For the month of February our theme will be Valentines. We will be making Valentine flower handprints, footprint

hearts, and Bee My Valentine footprints. We will have our Valentine’s Day class party on February 14th, so please dress your child in something special

for the holiday. Red, pink or something with hearts. If you would like to bring treats for our party please remember they have to be store bought and

cannot contain nuts. We would like to say a loving farewell to Henry who will be moving up to the Pre-toddler class soon. You will be missed by all your

friends! We would like welcome Avery, Isabel, Owen and Sage to our First Steps room. As always, parents, thank you for all your support!

Ms. Candice Ms. April

January saw an increase in our little kaleidoscope of butterflies with the inclusion of 5 month old Henry! The swarm welcomes

you! Emma is doing really well with sitting up straight without assistance. Micah, in addition to eating Stage 1 foods, is also

working on getting teeth 3 and 4. Go Micah! Mary Catherine is doing exceptionally well at standing. Now, if we could just get

her to take a step. Hmmm….Jack is now 5 months old. He has become very skillful at holding his own bottle. You go, Jack! Kate

Louise, who daily crawls the entire circumference of the Baby Room and pulling up on her own. Finally, Tripp, the oldest of our

babies. He continues to improve at walking with assistance, talking, singing, and clapping, as a transition to the First Steps room

looms in the horizon. Our theme for this month is Animals and Valentine’s Day. Baby class curriculum, the Butterflies and

Honeybees will be working jointly on the same art/classroom projects such as handprint sea animals, textured star fish, and foot

print horse. We will work on BSL for Love and Hug. Additionally, some of the books we will be incorporating into our studies

will be “One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish” by Dr. Seuss, “Put Me in the Zoo” by Robert Lapshire, and David McPhail’s

“Animals A to Z.” We look forward to your continued support and cooperation as we press forth into the New Year.

Ms. Julia Ms. Cynthia Ms. Keonte’

Happy February to all! “Heart” day is coming soon…Valentine’s Day is the highlight of this month! Last month the

babies created fun and fabulous penguins. This month we will be incorporating hearts and heart shapes into our art

projects. The babies will love it! We want to extend a warm welcome to Isabel and Milana to our class…both of them

are adjusting really well. Our babies continue to grow and change day by day and sometimes it seems they are growing

much too fast! It’s amazing to watch how each individual child develops. Avery is walking on her own. Isabelle is

officially taking a few steps on her own and will be an independent walker fairly soon, right before our very eyes!

Cooper is always on the move and likes to wait for the door to open so he can try to escape to the hallway! Cora is

talking up a storm. We don’t quite understand her language yet, but she loves to vocalize. We are looking forward to

a wonderful month. Thank you to all of our parents for your continued support. We wish you all a terrific Valentine’s

Day!

PRE-TODDLER PUPS

After a wonderful 2017, our class is excited to explore and learn something new every day in 2018, as well as welcoming

new friends to our classroom! In January we made Kindness Collages, painted the letter K red, and made kangaroos

out of construction paper. We are constantly reinforcing our knowledge of shapes, colors, numbers, our body parts,

and the ABC’s. Our Science Fair was so much fun. We showed everyone how to make their own SLIME…Ewwwww!

During the month of February we will be making Valentine’s Day cards out of construction paper for our families and

decorating Mardi Gras mask. We will continue learning about our bodies and reading books like “Me and My Body,”

“Touch and Feel,” and “How Do I Feel?” We will also be making finger puppets from gloves, and tracing the children’s

hands and an outline of their bodies, as well as doing some fun finger painting. We look forward to dancing, eating

and showing each other love at our very own Valentine’s Day party on the 14th. Parents are welcome to join in the

celebration. As always, we want to say thank you for always helping and supporting us and trusting your children to

our care!

TODDLER DOVES

As we get ready for the month of February, we were very happy last month to begin the New Year with excitement for learning so much more this year. We have lots of new skills to share. We welcomed Ava to our class at the end of January and the Doves are very happy to meet their new friend. Gaspard has transitioned with us and enjoying his new class experience. We are looking forward to February, the month full of love, with joy. The children will be learning about loving, caring and sharing. Our lesson plan will incorporate all the loving colors red, pink, white and purple. Insects will also be featured in our theme for the month…among them are the ladybugs, bees, and butterflies. We will work on our fine motor skills by coloring, painting, and pasting cut out materials. We will advance our language skills by listening to stories and talking about them. Math will consist of counting, sorting and grouping. For exercise and gross motor skills we will have yoga class every Friday at 9:00am. This helps the children know their bodies are very important, and helps them move all the muscles in their bodies, small and large, and teaches them how to balance. Our children love this class. Once again, thank you for allowing me to be your child’s teacher.

BRIDGE ROOM TURTLES

In the month of January, we learned how to count objects and recognize the numbers 1 – 10. We had a wonderful

Science Fair and our class had a very fun Skittles experiment, where they turned Skittles into rainbows. In February,

a month in which to celebrate love, we will be talking about love for our parents. The children are going to make

Valentine’s Cards for their parents. We will also be a making special Valentine’s Day bears. We would like parents

to please bring Valentine’s Cards for each of the children (14) by February 9th because we will be playing a fun game

called “Who’s Got Mail?” The teachers will have a list of the children’s first names so you can address the cards.

Please also bring a healthy store bought snack to share with the class. We will be making a counting book for the

children to take home to help you practice numbers with your children. This month we will be working on the

numbers 1 – 20, and recognizing the letters A through J, as well as learning about our Five Senses. Thank you for your

continued support of our class! Happy Valentine’s Day!

PRE-K THANKFUL 3’S

Happy New Year! What a way to start 2018…snow and ice, but what an experience for the children. In the month of January

we learned about why Martin Luther King, Jr. was such an important figure for our country during his time and why he continues

to be so vital for us now. Last month we are continuing down the alphabet line stopping at letters Q, R, and S. We are getting

further in our counting chart counting from 1 – 100 with the newest addition of counting by 10’s. We had a fantastic turn out

for our Spirit Night at Fuddruckers and STEAM Science Fair in January. We are looking forward to February, the month of love.

We will share with each other what we love about ourselves, our families, and our friends. We will be celebrating and sharing

with each other at our Valentine’s Day class party nice treats. Our letters for the month of February are T, U, and V. We will

also talk about the colorful holiday of Mardi Gras. Come see us as we show our pearly whites and smiles for our school Mardi

Gras Parade around the Parish Hall. We saved the best for last…in addition to our parade we will have the annual yummy

Pancake Supper put on by the Men of Grace….please come join us! Let’s work together and help our children learn and succeed.

Grace and Peace,

Ms. Julie Ms. Beatrice

PRE-K FOUR GIRAFFES

Happy Valentine’s Day to you. Thank you to all of you who came to Fuddruckers to support our school’s Spirit Night. We had a

great time! Thank you for coming to our Open House and Science Fair so you could see all the wonderful science experiments

conducted by our students. In January we welcomed two new students to our class, Jason and Kiana. We are so happy to have

you in our class! Our theme for February is Friendship. We will be focusing on how to treat others. Our students will be

encouraged to speak kindly to each other, they will be engaged in activities that promote team work, kindness and taking turns.

For language arts, the students will write letters to each other expressing positive qualities. We continue to work on recognizing

sight words and we will be reading many books, among them “My New Shoes” and “My Bear.” Thank you for practicing reading

and counting with your child at home. We will be working on math, and learning to write our last names without any help,

progressing in spelling and learning the sounds of the letters, and continuing with our Spanish lessons. Our curriculum is always

posted in class. I am so proud of the children in my class. On February 14th we will be exchanging Valentine’s Cards and having

a party…I will have a sign up list for snacks! Thank you as always for all your support.

Ms. Maritza

This month we highlight Roxana Baires, one of our fabulous Infant Room teachers. Roxana has the

perfect temperament for working with babies. She is always calm, relaxed, unfazed, on an even keel and

always very gentle and sweet! Roxana originally hails from El Salvador and has been a teacher for 12

years. She is in the second process of receiving her CDA certificate. She has two children, a boy of thirteen

and a ten year old girl. When her busy life as a teacher and mom permits, she enjoys working with

crafts. Roxie tells us she knew from a very early age that she had a passion for working with children

and it shows.

Her philosophy is that children begin learning from the time they are born and that at a young age they learning the most by

playing and interacting with other children. She firmly believes that teachers are role models and that open communication

between families and teachers is essential in understanding the needs of the children and building mutual trust between teachers

and families. We here at Grace are so lucky that Roxana has made a home here with us in the Infant Room. We thank her for

all her love and dedication.

THANK YOU Ms. Roxana for your dedication, love and compassion!!
