SPOTLIGHT

Two of our most dedicated volunteers at Northridge Hospital, Bill and Mary Newbold, have become an institution when it comes to giving back to the community with their many years of service. Married 56 years, Bill hails from Indianapolis and Mary was raised in Wisconsin. They are the proud parents of twin daughters and one adored granddaughter.

Mary was introduced to the hospital by another loyal volunteer and good friend of the Newbold’s, Dorothy Lake. In fact, Mary was to be installed as an officer in the Auxiliary on the day of our famous 1994 earthquake. She is currently our Parliamentarian. Bill was still employed at that time as an aerospace engineer and had no real thought (or time!) of entering the world of volunteering. But, Mary persuaded him to take on the job of compiling our monthly newsletter which, I am happy to say, he still does today.

Bill also put his talents to use by consulting for the Canadian government. He became an active volunteer at Northridge hospital in 1995 and, as they say, “the rest is history”. He was actively involved for many years at the state level of hospital volunteers which required a fair amount of traveling. Bill is also a past president of the Auxiliary and previously held the office of Chair of the Northridge Hospital Foundation which raises funds enabling the hospital to provide services so important to our community.

This dynamic couple is very active in the hospital and to serve on many committees, always opening their lovely home for Auxiliary parties and lending a hand wherever needed. Mary spends many hours at the Information Desk greeting visitors and Bill is a real asset in our Gift Shop.

In their spare time Bill and Mary enjoy traveling, theater, music and reading. Mary is a very proficient knitter. If she has a needle and a piece of yarn; look out, the finished results will be gorgeous. In his spare time Bill enjoys cooking.

MERRY MEMOS

As we move into the new year and embrace positive changes, let us all reflect on how we got here.

With our recent patient surveys we recognize our entire hospital team is engaged to insure our patients feel safe and comfortable with their overall care. We cannot get there alone and depend on our dedicated volunteers as part of this valued team.

Customer Service starts at the front door of our hospital. To insure all areas are covered it is time again to have our annual Volunteer Customer Service and Safety Classes.

Please review the dates in the adjacent Volunteer News article and sign up now. We have added classes to make this process convenient for all of our Volunteers - mornings, afternoons and weekends.

To reserve a date contact Karen Sabatino at extension 2961.

Thank you all for keeping current with these Volunteer requirements.

She has received a fantastic response from the parents and staff, and the children love when she comes. Thank you Lois for your participation in this wonderful program!

GOODBYE

We’re sorry to tell you, but long time member and Past President Jean Kerr has decided it’s time to retire.

She isn’t moving away and would be happy to receive your calls of goodbye and well wishes. CONSIDER THIS

A good pun is its own reword.

Energizer Bunny arrested - charged with battery.

A man's home is his castle, in a manor of speaking.

A pessimist's blood type is always b-negative.

Dijon vu - the same mustard as before.

Practice safe eating - always use condiments.

I fired my masseuse today. She just rubbed me the wrong way.

A Freudian slip is when you say one thing but mean your mother.

I used to work in a blanket factory, but it folded.

I used to be a lumberjack, but I just couldn't hack it, so they gave me the axe.

NHMC NEWS (Mary Grim provided the following memorandum and

requested that it be included in the newsletter.)

To: Northridge Hospital Employees and Volunteers Northridge Hospital Physicians

Subject: Leadership Transition

As we prepare for Saliba’s retirement and recognize the legacy of leadership he leaves behind, we must also continue to focus on providing the excellent, compassionate care that Northridge Hospital is so well known. Northridge is an exceptional hospital with a heritage built on years of safe, high quality, and compassionate care delivered by a dedicated team. In order to make sure that we select the right president to continue this legacy into the future, it is important to me that I learn everything I can about the hospital and our team.

My goal is to become better acquainted with the hospital and the specific services provided while getting to know the staff, the physicians, and the Northridge community that we serve. I believe that it is by working closely with all of you that we can best determine the right candidate for president and build a roadmap for the future. The best way for me to achieve my goal is to take on the role of interim hospital president as of Monday, February 19, 2018. Having recently served as interim hospital president before making a permanent appointment at another Dignity Hospital in our service area, I know from experience just how valuable this approach can be for all.

Thank you for your continued commitment to the hospital, our patients, and our future. I look forward to being on campus soon.
