Congrats & Thank You!

Sherry and I just returned from the Illinois District Warm Up and we had a blast.

Let us begin by thanking Mary & Bob Adams for all they did as the District Directors for Illinois. At the end of the rally, they ceremonially turned over the reins to Steve & Diane Gottschalk. Congratulations Steve & Diane!!!! Illinois is in good hands and we learned that Mary and Bob are not disap-pearing, but will remain on District Staff as the MEC.

We arrived in Peoria Thursday evening as we were asked to be judges the Illinois Couple of the Year and Individual of the Year Selection Process taking place Friday. All of the couples and individuals did very well. Of course, only one couple and one individual can be selected. Congratulations to Gene & Annette Shields on their selection as Illinois Couple of the Year and Larrie Wiggand as Individual of the Year.

Winter Warm Up was an excellent way to kick off the Rally Season. Sherry and I were ready for a road trip and seeing so many familiar GWRRA faces. We were busy all weekend and the camaraderie and laughter kept up.

Next event on the agenda is the Missouri Spring Fling in Osage Beach, MO on March 4. We have done this event numerous times and if you can attend, you will definitely want to return year after year.

Saturday Night skits are always a hoot in a festive party atmosphere.

Looks like we will get through January with no snow in Southern Missouri….yea!!! Maybe we can dodge that bullet in February. Riding season for us is getting closer!

Ride safe; be well. And, as always, remember that fun shall be the last word—so HAVE FUN!

As 2017 starts another exciting time awaits all of us.

Think of the rides you want to take, the friends you look for-ward to seeing again, and all the FUN. But, how does that all come about? Those rides and activities happened by some-one stepping forward and deciding to do something for all of us. The neat part is you can share in helping out just by pitching in once in awhile. How about setting up an evening or day ride, greeting members at a gathering, selling 50/50 tickets, or even helping set up a rally? Once you start partic-ipating you will find out it is fun and you meet some really nice people.

There have been several articles out about people stepping up to help a chapter, district or region. Recently, Ray Garris [January 2017 Insight letter] talked about a chapter that was having a rough time and everyone pitched in to "share the load." Things for that chapter got better as members each took their turn helping out their chapter - and they were having FUN. We suggest you read the January 2017 Insight letter to get the whole story. This con-cept of helping out has been around in our daily lives for a long time.

Ray's article and others seems to suggest we should take another look at how we keep GWR-RA moving in the right direction of helping each other and having FUN. Maybe it is time that we use this idea to solidify our chapters and districts. Some Directors tend to carry the whole load either because they don't want to share or because they feel it is all up to them. Those that have learned to share don't feel over worked and still have a great sense of accom-plishment. For 2017, lets all pitch in and help our Directors to 'Make GWRRA Great Still!'

And you can be part of the team by offering to help out in many ways. In this next year, see what you can do to lend a hand to a chapter, district or region to make it better for all mem-bers. Even if for an hour helping out by judging at a rally or an afternoon leading/setting up a ride, you will enjoy it and others will be really appreciate that you stepped up and helped the members.

We hope you all have a Super 2017! In terms of helping out, we will be happy to help out whenever we are in your area. Don't be afraid to ask as we are offering.

Bill & Nancy James,

TRAINING THOUGHTS

Ten Commandments of Good Communication – Part 1 of 2 Communication is one the areas that is critical to our daily existence, yet is often taken for granted. We often hear or read similar infor-mation presented in different formats throughout our lives. Without thinking about it, our brain filters all the incoming information only allowing us to remember certain portions of the details at any given time. The following list summarizes the first 5 of 10 main points of a publication by the Ameri-can Management Association titled Ten Commandments of Good Communication (Ó1955). Check back next month for the remaining 5 items! Perhaps at least one of these items will be of help in a future discussion with your family, a co-worker, and/or a GWRRA acquaintance. 1. Seek to clarify your ideas before communicating.

The more systematically you analyze the problem or idea to be communicated, the clearer it becomes. Good planning must also consider the goals and attitudes of your audience (and those who will be affected by the communication).

2. Examine the true purpose of each communication. Before you communicate, ask yourself what you really want to accomplish with your message – obtain information, initiate action, change another person’s attitude. Identify your most important goal and then adapt your language, tone, and com-plete approach to serve that specific objective.

3. Consider the total physical and human setting whenever you communicate. Meaning and content are conveyed by more than words alone. Consider these factors:

Sense of timing - the circumstances under which you make an announcement or a decision

Physical setting – whether you communicate in private or in front of a group Social climate – sets the tone of communications based on family relationships and

interactions, work relationships within a company or department, etc. Custom and past practice – the degree to which your communication conforms to,

or departs from, the expectations of your audience.

4. Consult with others in planning communications where appropriate. Those who help you plan your communication and understand the audience will tend to lend your message their active support. Such consultation often helps to lend additional insight and objectivity to your message.

5. Be aware of the overtones as well as the basic content of your message.

The tone of your voice, your expression, your receptiveness to the responses of others - all have tremendous impact on those you wish to reach. Frequently overlooked, these subtleties of communication often affect a listener’s reaction to a message even more than its basic content.

Greg Hayes Region E Rider Educator This month I want to address my article to the Chapter Educators and to those who must take their place in their absence. One of the im-portant roles of the Chapter Educator is providing a “safety talk” at the chapter’s monthly gathering. We may have new Chapter Educa-tors coming on board at the first of the year, so this article is to help them and to help remind current CEs of the role of the monthly “safety talk”. We have a wide variety of Chapter Educators, some have been in the role for a long time, some just starting, some have great speaking skills, some are challenging themselves to overcome their apprehension on speaking in front of groups, we come from diverse backgrounds and everyone is unique. Okay, now I sound like Mr. Rog-ers. So, many CEs have no problem getting up to talk in front of the group and in keeping their talk informative and interesting to the chapter. For others it may not come as natural.

So, I thought I would go over some points of what I think can help anyone to either to learn a new craft or to hone their existing skills.

The first time I got up to talk to my chapter it felt awkward for me. It didn’t help that I was new to the chapter. However, my main concern was that I was talking to a group of experi-enced motorcyclists. What did I have to tell them that they already didn’t know or haven’t heard of many times before? It seems we are preaching to the choir when we talk about safety issues. Most all of us think of ourselves as safe riders. We don’t want to be preached or lec-tured. That is certainly not what the safety talk is about. As the speaker we want to be engag-ing the group in a way to refresh all of our thoughts on issues that affect our safety. If we don’t discuss these issues on a regular basis, though, those ideas could become victim to our own forgetfulness. So, our talks are typically reminders of things most of us already know. I try to keep that in mind when I am talking to the group.

So, here are some ideas on making your safety talks effective.

Keep your presentation to around 5 to 10 minutes. A m inute and a half is too short. But, I would guess that most people talk too long. Beyond 10 minutes you have probably lost most of your audience. Remember that there are a number of things that are happening in the meeting besides the safety talk. Really, it doesn’t need to be longer than 5 minutes.

Know your subject. Talk about som ething you know , or do your re-search thoroughly on your topic, or do both. You don’t want to get up and not know your subject. Come well prepared. If you didn’t then this will quickly show and you are going to lose your credibility.

Keep it simple. Y our audience is not going to rem em ber m ore than three things that you present, maybe less. Break more complex topics into smaller

February 2017 Page 9

Continued from page 8

parts and present them over the course of several meetings. Using only three items may be a little restrictive for some topics but use good judgment and follow my first bullet point.

Make it interactive. Ask questions, but keep it reasonable. You don ’t want this to become too long, get a sidetracked discussion going, or start an argu-ment. But, an example of making your talk interactive would be to ask the chapter “what are some ways you think we can be more visible on our motorcycles to other motorists?” You should have a short list of ideas of your own to fill in.

Use bullet points. First state the idea clear ly and concisely. How ever, you don’t want to give three bullet points and be done in 30 seconds. You can em-bellish to explain the point, but don’t get sidetracked or over embellish and lose the clarity of the idea.

Use notes. You don ’t want to read everything from a paper, but having your points and any important facts written down is good practice for these safety presentations. A lot of people don’t need any written notes but don’t feel it is taboo to use. It not only helps to remember your points but can help you keep focus on your topic. It can also be a security blanket knowing that if you need to refresh your memory on something that it will be there to help you out.

I hope this gives you some food for thought. Remember to have fun. If you are not enjoying the presenting then that is probably going to convey to the rest of the group. It is okay to be a little nervous before speaking before a group. Hopefully you are not shaking. But, it is pretty normal for anyone to be just slightly nervous. Don’t worry about it and do your best.

Remember that you do not have to give every presentation. You should mix it up by inviting guest speakers or inviting other members to share what they learned in one of our seminars or a first aid class.

So, if you are the Chapter Educator, or someone else filling in that position at a meeting for the safety talk, thank you for being there for the chapter and for doing something that proba-bly not everyone in the chapter is willing to do. Your dedication is highly appreciated.

Safe riding!

It’s so simple!

A wise, old man, well maybe not so ‘old’ per say, once ex-plained so eloquently yet simply, that each of us as “ambassadors” in GWRRA is able to share the motto of Motor-ist Awareness: “Share the Road”. The emphasis is on drawing the public’s awareness to watch for those smaller vehicles. When one is out riding and you stop to get fuel or do some shopping, someone likely stops to look at your beautiful mo-torcycle or trike and then you start visiting about it. That is your opportunity to share the idea of who is out there riding motorcycles and be sure to mention:

Watch out for motorcycles, trikes, mopeds, and even bicycles. When you do that, you have just completed a Motorist Awareness event. Then and equally important, keep track of it and let your chapter educator or district MAP person know. That should be added to the count for the N23 quarterly report. I am certain that there are a lot more of those occasions going on than are reported. It is not just about the brochures, videos, and seminars. It is also about that one-on-one contact. Like Jim Gaffigan says in his com edy routines: “It’s so simple.” One does not even have to hand an MA brochure to the person or persons; but it would be a really cool idea if one were to have some brochures on your motorcycle, so that could happen. Just food for thought. The tri-fold brochures are supposed to be available from the national office, so have your Educator or Motorist Awareness person call to obtain a sup-ply…or even do it on your own.

Leave earlier – Drive slower – Live longer

Winter is on the RUN!

With more sunlight each day and unusually warm Jan-uary, our riding itch is starting to kick in big time. Just a couple more months and we can get the 2 and 3 wheeled toys out for a ride (argh, I did say months for us folks in the great frozen North).

After the Holidays, we started our travels to visit our Friends in Illinois. Illinois announces the change of District Team Winter Event, which was an introduction into the New District Team for us – having Steve and Diane Gottchalk step up as the new District Directors.

We attended the Illinois Winter Warm Up in Peoria over the weekend. We were one of three sets of Judges for the Couple and Individual of the Year selection. All the candidate’s had very good qualifications and selection went down to the wire, which made our task even more demanding.

While all the Couples and Individuals that participated are winners, at the end of the selec-tion, only one couple could be IL District Couple of the Year and one as Individual of the Year. While we are not ‘seasoned veterans’ in the selection process, a small group met to pro-vide pointers for the selected COY and IOY as they progress forward. .

One last time – If you are anywhere near the Minneapolis Convention Center (on Feb 3rd, 4th or 5th), there are a lot of interesting and cool bikes and accessories at the International Mo-torcycle Show. While not specifically tailored to Gold Wings, there are many accessories that we need / buy or review with the vendors. The show is a valuable asset to talk to Dealers and Manufacturers and gets us revived up for the summer and our summer adventures. If you are in the area, drop in to see what the show is all about.

We hope to see everyone around the Region at the many District and Region events – some Chapter occasions, also.
