February 2017 Sapphire Scene RESIDENTS OF THE MONTH
KATIE and MICK McCAWLEY
Kae was born at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida. She remembers having poodles for pets and playing with marbles. Her Grandpa Milt, a school teacher, was the biggest influence on her early life. She was afraid of strangers as a child, although now she is more afraid of heights! She raised her younger siblings from the me she was eight years old, frequently packing a lunch and going to the school to play. She recalls an amusing episode: “I was a perfeconist about cleaning. One Christmas, while my youngest sister was sll sleeping, I took all her presents and put them away (clothes in drawers, etc.), so when she got up, there were no gi5s for her!” Kae’s favorite subject in school was English. She was a “good kid with lots of friends.” Even so, she somemes struggled with depression. Her teen idol was Davey Jones of the Monkees. “He was so cute,” she says. Her favorite historical era is the late 1800’s, and her favorite historical figure is Jenny Lind, the Swedish Nighngale. She feels that the most significant polical even of her lifeme was the shoong of J.F.K. Kae’s first job was waitressing, and she had a funny moment when she “stopped suddenly and a whole tray of water glasses went all over the guest.” She met Mick (a customer) while she was working at the Golden Spike Restaurant in Salt Lake City. Kae owned Country Dreams Anques for 28 years. Her happiest memory is of her wedding day. She and Mick have been married for 24 years! Kae enjoys 1960’s music, loves Christmas and camping in the mountains. She has an amazing knowledge of anques and their worth and history, and finds inspiraon in magazines on decorang. Kae and Mick have seven children between them (including our very own office manager, Mary Hoke), and they are both very loving parents and grandparents. Mick was born in Houston, Texas, and his earliest memory is of walking down a dirt road, holding the hand of his mother, who was the biggest influence on his life. Some of Mick’s favorite memories are of having an Easter chick and playing “hide and go seek.” During the summerme he picked coEon and dug for fossils and arrowheads. In fact, he lists his dream job as being an archaeologist. He used to be afraid of the dark, but his greatest fear as an adult is drowning. His teen idol was Brenda Lee. “I was in love,” he remembers. His favorite me in history is the early 1800’s, and his favorite person from history is Teddy Roosevelt. He was “a very wise man.” “Mickey Mouse” was a nickname he received as a child. Mick enjoyed bread-and-buEer sandwiches, and describes himself as “overweight” in childhood. His best friend was his cousin, Keith. Mick remembers that his favorite job was sign-painng. He was interested and hardworking as a student, says that art was his favorite subject, and to this day he loves to draw. Mick loves rock music from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. He enjoys the 4
th of
July, and his favorite place to visit is Texas. A favorite memory of Mick’s: “When my wife took a shortcut to Interstate 90 and the shortcut ended in a farmer’s field about two hours later.” Please stop by The Manor and get acquainted with this wonderful couple!

DESIRE
I have a man that lives
just over the hill. Spending me with him really gives me a thrill.
We have morning coffee
out on the back deck. My lips dream of coffee
and a so5 peck.
We lace our shoes and go for a morning run.
It’s as though I’m his shadow cast by the sun.
He goes to work
but comes back to me at lunch. We eat quickly
because he’s on a me crunch.
I watch him drive away, then I take a nap.
I recharge my baEeries and read my map.
I like knowing the terrain
around our place. I need some hiding spots-
you know-just in case.
He’s home for dinner but I don’t get to cook. I gaze across his plate with a longing look.
Nights are hard for me, I lay there wide awake,
and imagine he breathes like a dry leaf quake.
But today is Saturday and that’s just fine! I get to spend it all with my Valenne!
The weather will be warm
so we’ll be outside. Lounging in the hammock
and on a bike ride.
And wherever he goes I’ll be right there, too.
If only he knew me and my love so true.
But with my man
I’ll cherish being alone. Yes, it’s just me, him…
and my surveillance drone!
Dominic “Flominic” Farrenkopf

A GRATEFUL FAREWELL TO SHERILL WILLIAMS
Sapphire Lutheran Homes would like to extend a great big "Thank you and best wishes!" to Sherill Williams. Sherill served the residents of Sapphire for a combined total of
23+ years! In her %me here, Sherill held these formal posi%ons:
Prep Cook, Kitchen Manager, Office Manager, Service Coordinator, Administrator and AL Health Director. Sherill
filled the holes with roles as Housekeeper, Wait Staff, Dishwasher, Ac%vity Leader, Volunteer, and probably
fixed something that was leaking, creaking of just needed tweaking!
Sherill's presence will be greatly missed but she will
surely con%nue living Sapphire's
mission in her future life endeavors since the mission has been a part of her for so
long.
