YORK REGION DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD Administrator Message It is hard to believe that we have moved into the second half of this school year! The time has been well spent with a great deal of academic success and growth demonstrated by each child throughout the school. It is also a very busy time in our school office with the planning for the 2017/18 school year underway. In or- der for us to have an accurate picture of our student body, it is important that we account for all students expected to be with us next year. If your child(ren) will NOT be returning to Joseph A. Gibson Public School this coming September, please notify the office with a note, phone call or email. On the other hand, if you know of anyone who lives in our area and is planning on attending Gibson, please let them know registration has begun and they can come in to register their child for September, 2017. This month, your child will receive their Term 1 Report Card. It will be sent home on Thursday, February 16th, 2017. These report cards are based on work com- pleted during the first term and will be written to meet the guidelines of the Minis- try of Educations Growing Success policy. Our teachers work hard to provide students with multiple opportunities to demonstrate their learning and are always seeking ways to engage students and meet the diverse needs of the learners in their classrooms. Although no formal interview day is set for these reports cards, please feel free to contact your childs teacher if you have any questions or would like more information. This month we will also be hosting our Family Potluck evening on Thursday, February 23, 2017 from 6-8 pm at Maple High School. More information is locat- ed in this newsletter. On behalf of the staff at Gibson, we would like to welcome Mr. Paul Ferreira, to Gibson as our new Lead Caretaker. Paul has been filling in for us since January 2, 2017 and we are thrilled to welcome him to the Gibson community. This month we will be saying goodbye to Ms. Suyat, Mme Ziba and Mr. Tustin, long term oc- casional teachers who have been teaching in the Gr. 1/2, Gr. 1 French Immer- sion and Gr. 6/7 class respectively. We want to thank them both for all their hard work at Gibson over the past year and wish them all the best in their future endeavours. A very warm welcome back to Mrs. vanGeest and Mrs. Charalam- bous who will both be returning to their respective teaching positions later this month. And, with Family Day on Monday, Feb. 20th, I hope that you take that day to enjoy time well-spent with your family! School Council sells cookies every Wednesday at lunch time for $1.

Don’t forget to bring in your loonie on these days to enjoy a tasty cookie.

The next round of pizza lunches is beginning March 6 and the order forms have already been distributed and are online. Also, students are re-minded that they need to bring a lunch if they HAVE NOT ordered pizza as there is no guarantee that slices will be available for purchase on those days.

In partnership with the Lions’ Club this year, we are collecting pop can tabs to support the pur-

chase, maintenance and repairs of mobility and assistive equipment. A jar has been placed in the office to collect these tabs. Thanks for your sup-

Family Potluck Evening —Thursday, February 23, 2017

One of the big events for Joseph A. Gibson is our annual Potluck. It has been a tremendously successful event in the past and we are looking forward to this opportunity for the school, parents and community to come together and enjoy some home-cooked treats and each other’s company. This year, with our large enrolment numbers, the Potluck will take place at 6 pm in the cafetorium at Maple High School. Information will be sent home via email; and with students later this month. Information will also be posted on the Gibson Blog. Looking forward to seeing everyone come out on Thursday, February 23, 2017 at Maple High School .

A special thank you to all our volunteer driv-ers who have been assisting with transporta-

tion to and from various athletic events. These opportunities to play at different

schools increase our students’ confidence and further develops their skills prior to Area

tournaments.

Students in Grades 5 to 12 at the YRDSB will be invited to participate in a survey between March 20 and April 28, 2017. The survey is voluntary, anonymous and confi-dential, and will take place at school.

The YRDSB survey fulfills the Ontario Ministry of Educa-tion’s requirement for schools to conduct student surveys and is aligned with the YRDSB’s Board Improvement Plan for Student Achievement and Well-Being. Survey ques-tions will address topics related to Math, Modern Learn-ing, Mental Health and Well-Being, Equity and School Safety.

This survey provides an opportunity to hear directly from students and the results will be used to identify student needs and plan strategies to support student achievement and well-being. If you have questions, please contact the school office. If you do not wish your child(ren) to partici-pate in the survey, please contact the school by March 10, 2017.

YRDSB School Climate Survey

We are now halfway through the school year. This is a good time to reflect on all that your child has learned and to look at setting goals for the rest of the school year.

Our Board believes that student well-being and achievement go hand-in-hand. One of our goals set out in the Board of Trustees’ Multi-Year Plan is to “continuously increase student achievement and well-being through a culture of car-ing and learning.”

The Ministry of Education has recently identified four priorities for well-being: positive mental health, safe and accept-ing schools, healthy schools, and equity and inclusive education. As a Board of Trustees, we will continue to further work in all of these areas to support student well-being in line with these priorities.

There are many resources on the Board website to help support student well-being, including tips for talking about mental health, managing stress, packing healthy lunches and addressing incidents of bullying. Creating a healthy, safe and welcoming learning environment is key to helping our students reach their full potential. All of us have an important role to play in creating an environment that enables our students to thrive.

I wish you all the best for a healthy, happy and successful 2017.

French Carnivale—March 3rd

Planning is in progress for this year’s French Carnivale celebration for all of our students. More detailed information regarding the format of this event will be forward-ed later this month.

February is Black History Month

Celebration of Black History/African Heritage Month has been a part of Canadian society since the 1950’s and set the stage for acknowledgement of the contributions of peoples of African Heritage to the cultural, economic, political and social fabric of Canada. As a school community, we will be recognizing the various achievements and experiences of persons of African Heritage; and their role as an integral part of Canadian history. During the month of February, we will be acknowledging Black History month through our daily announcements, in-class activities and during our assembly on Tues. Feb. 14th. Resources can be found at: Citizenship and Immigration Canada Black History Month Site http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/multiculturalism/black/index.asp
