Welcome 2017! I hope everyone enjoyed the Holidays and were able to visit with family and friends to ring in the New Year.

Tom has successfully journeyed through the health care system with his hip replacement and I am happy to say is ahead of the curve on his recovery and rehab. He started making appearances at the club this past week, coming in to call Bingo on January 26th and getting down for Motown Night on the 28th. I would like to thank our entire team of employees and some very valuable volunteers for stepping in to keep our club running smoothly and without a hitch in his absence.

We finally had winter the weekend of the 28th and 29th. Lucky for us that does not happen too often!

I would like to thank Linda Humphers for her participation and hard work as a member of the board of Directors for the past few years. Linda resigned recently from the board so that she and her husband Al can start cruising further from home now that they are both formally retired from the corporate world. We will continue to see them around the club (and Linda will continue to co-edit the Compass) and wish them well in their travels. At the January Board meeting we approved Gerard Kane to complete Linda’s term this year on the Board of Directors.

Gerard is also spearheading a schedule for both pow-erboaters and sailors to join ranks for sunset cruises leaving from the club. These cruises will also include members who do not have a boat that would like to hop aboard with a boater for these cruises. Keep an eye on the Compass and Constant Contact for more details.

Coming up late in February, specifically the 22nd through the 26th, CYC again hosts the Laser MidWinters East regatta. We can use your help on race commit-tee, with or without your boats, and there are land-side activities that we need help with also. PC Dick Boblenz is organizing the regatta for CYC and Dave Yoder is coordinating race committee volunteers. If you are interested in helping out, email Dove at [email protected]. Saturday February 11th we are teaching a race committee class at the Clearwater Community Sailing Center for those who want to help at regattas.

Enjoy the club any time you can. Nancy and I look forward to seeing you there!

The December Waterside meeting had continued discussion and efforts on club boat maintenance, dock maintenance (planning replacement of a few damaged pilings and adding a few in February, pedestal light repair, recovering the concrete pad, replacing cable on davits and checking cable TV connections), long term (3-5 year) dock replacement via the Long Term Planning Committee, draft letter to inactive slip holders, and an ongoing review of slip and shore power fees.

The next Waterside meeting will take place on Tuesday, February 21st at 6 pm (shifting a day early due to registra-tion for Laser Mid-Winters East on Wednesday).

Thanks to Gerard Kane, we are looking to start a monthly sunset cruise each month for CYC members to gather on the Gulf to watch the sunset, with our inaugural event on Saturday, February 18th. We will include both power and sailboats planning for high tides and sunset (6:26 pm that day), with a post-sunset reception/gathering at the Tiki. Intent is to keep it simple, make it fun, and exercise boats from the CYC Marina (and build some skills around dusk/night boating). We will send out more information by constant contact and e-mail or you can contact Gerard at [email protected] or me (info below).

Nautical Trivia of the Month: the seaman’s name for the excitement on board ship as she approaches her des-tination with the prospect for the crew of a spell of liberty ashore is called what? I’ll owe a drink to the third person who texts or e-mails me the correct answer.

THE aNSWER to last month’s nautical trivia question, a ship’s boy in a warship who carries powder to the gun decks is a “powder monkey.” The winner with the fourth correct answer is Cat Allchin (Cat) from the Grand Traverse Yacht Club in Michigan who is in the area visiting family for a few months and read the Compass online.

As usual, I can be reached at [email protected] or on my cell phone by text or voice at 727-641-8633.

Sailing Activities

Winter/spring 2017 Sailing began on Saturday January 28. Our Saturday youth and adult classes are at full enrollment, as is our Tuesday/Thursday after-school program. We are looking forward to time well spent under sail during the next several months. At the same time, we are also preparing for Summer Camp 2017.

As of the middle of January, Summer Camp enrollment was at 50 percent capacity. Open enrollment is now in effect and we urge interested families to contact me as soon as possible to receive an application. (please see my contact info below).

CYC members are encouraged to visit our programs and meet our families. Stop by any time you are at the Club and our classes are in session. You never know: The stranger you meet some Saturday morning may very well become your new best friend and fellow member of CYC. Please make a note of our schedule (below) and we’ll look forward to seeing you soon.

Wishing you fair winds and many blessings, Fr. Bob Wagenseil, [email protected], (727) 510-6153

By Tish Wold, Past CommodorehI everYoNe! Sorry for the long layoff, but Curt and I had to work on getting our daughter married off just before Christmas! Now that that is done…

For CYC members (who care about this sort of thing), the Yachting Committee is looking at including the re-sults of beer can races somehow in the calculations for the Robert Word trophy that is presented each year at the Change of Watch. I am not sure how they will count it, but hopefully we will hear that soon (although, for some reason they are neck-deep in planning for Laser MidWinters East regatta).

I looked at the club’s calendar and came up with this rough schedule for Spring Beer Can Racing:

Monday, Feb 20 1:30 pm (Presidents Day)Sunday, March 5 2:30 pmSaturday, March 11 1:30 pm (this one might change)Sunday, april 2 2:30 pmSaturday, april 15 1:30 pmSaturday, May 6 1:30 pmSunday, May 21 2:30 pm

Please mark your calendars now! We will be using the cruising class handicap ratings, and if you need a list of the 10 loosey-goosey “rules” and beloved 10 command-ments of racing, contact me at [email protected] and I’ll email you copies.

If you know of any other sailors who’d like to come out and join us, please invite them!

Saturday, April 8 we will host a luau themed dock party and all CYC members are wel-come to join us for what will be a fun evening. April 15 is our annual children’s party, Breakfast with Mrs. Bunny. Winter funWho doesn’t love dinner and a show? The Bow

Chasers are no exception. We gathered at Marlin Darlin for a delicious dinner and headed to the Largo Cultural Center for the comedy revue Four Bitchin Babes. We shared good laughs with good friends.

Mondays at Mako’s on the Rocks is a great way to start the week. A group of Bow Chasers enjoyed dancing and singing along to hits from the 50’s through the 80’s.

WIND, rAIN, cold weather didn’t keep the Cruisers from Marker One Marina for our first cruise of the year. Our hosts, Connie and Merle Steele and Karen and Ken Watson dreamed up this Friday night docktail party that had everyone cooking something in a crock pot.

What a surprise to find Brunswick stew, barbecue, Hawaiian sliders, lentil soup, chocolate cake and so many other dishes that I can’t even remember them all. We fed 38 people and still had leftovers. On Saturday we had lunch at Sea Sea Ryders in Dunedin prior to attending the Dunedin Art Fair. Unlike previous years where the crowds were shoulder to shoulder, this one due to the wind and cold weather not only kept the crowds away but also some vendors. It was not a good year for the Art fair.

Saturday night was dinner at Frenchy’s. I cannot com-ment on the food because I stayed on the boat and did not brave the weather. Caught a lot of boos for that.

Next stop Caladesi Island. See you there.

come eNjoY a great lunch and a look at 40 years of Gulls activities at Clearwater Yacht Club. We will enjoy the company of Past Presidents as well as some of our older members. More information to come as we get closer to the date.

Watch for changes in the Gulls’ activities in the coming year. Although we have a large membership and good attendance at our functions, our sup-port team has dwindled to the point we now have to pick and choose the functions we can sponsor.

March will be the only Ladies Luncheon sponsored by the Gulls in 2017. In addition there are no plans for a Fashion Show, Boatique or a Dock Sale during the year. We will con-tinue to meet every Wednesday in the Gulls Nest to further our charitable work and socialize. We will support the club office in getting the Compass in the mail, help Yachting with the Race Committee Bags and provide other services as we are able.

With these changes, it was decided that no dues would be collected for the 2017 year. All members in 2016 will be carried on the 2017 membership rolls. There also will be no Gulls board meetings.

We again extend an invitation to one and all to come join us on Wednesdays in the Gulls Nest around 10:30 and/or in the dining room for lunch at noon.

jANUArY WAs A great month at the Club! We had an exciting month with our general manager Tom Brusini recov-ering from hip surgery. The staff really stepped up to make sure everything ran smoothly in his absence. A special thank you to the Clearwater Yacht Club Staff and our outstanding members who volun-teered to keep things going in the right direction.

We have many projects in progress that we will be sharing with you in the coming months as we get more of the details worked out.

For February you will see a few new things at the Club. We are working on some additions to the wine list. Austin has partnered up with member Jackie Eash who is an accomplished sommelier to add some new selections for 2017. Chef John is working on some new menu items suggested by members, and I am sure there will be some exciting new items for your enjoyment!

As we look forward to the rest of 2017, we are organizing a list of proposed projects to improve the Club. We would love your input on ideas to improve the facility and the operations. The committee will be meeting on Tues., Feb. 7 at 6:30 in the board room. Please join us for a short (I promise) meeting and then stay for dinner!

See you at the Club!

by charlie Geraci, membership chairman

jANUArY WAs my first meeting as Membership chair. It turned out to be a packed boardroom, abound-ing in new ideas. We are starting a new Ambassador program in which our committee will reach out to new members to get them more involved with the club ac-tivities they’ve expressed an interest in on their applica-tions. (Thank you, Steve Ingram, for that idea!)

Helen Correia is heading up Ambassador effort and is full speed ahead. We are tossing around new ideas to help reach our goal of 500 members when the High 5 initiative ends on Feb. 29th. We welcomed eight new members in December, and hopefully January will be just as good or better.

I would like to encourage everyone to participate in growing our membership and to keep making CYC the “friendliest” yacht club. Keep an eye out for new members.

Margaret Workman, 98, a long-time member of CYC and a stalwart at the Wednesday night bridge table, died peacefully on Dec. 20, 2016. She grew up in Atlanta and moved to Clearwater in 1946 with her husband Roy. They purchased one of the first post-war houses in Clearwater, built on Lebeau Street, and she and her husband were co-operators of the Clear-water Airpark. In addition to her CYC membership, Mrs. Workman was also a member of the YWCA, the DAR, the Clearwater Community Women’s Club, and Questers. She was a supporter of the Abilities Foundation, Ruth Eckerd Hall, Morton Plant Hospital Foundation, and several local arts groups. In addition to her membership at CYC, Mrs. Workman also be-longed to Belleair Country Club, Carlouel Yacht Club and Peace Memorial Presbyterian Church.

hAve YoU recovered from all the Holi-day gatherings, New Year parties and other great events in January? We hope so because plans for 2017 Entertainment are in full swing.

We held our first Entertainment Commit-tee meeting of the year in January with 16 Club members attending. We got lots of great ideas for the Club, agreed to have Event Hosts and a photographer at each event. Helen Correia is putting together a Decorating Committee and all are welcome! We are very thankful for everyone’s willingness to give their time and best efforts for CYC.

The Entertainment calendar is filling up quickly – this is our busiest time of the year so remember make your Reservations early! Here’s some fun events already scheduled for February:

Karaoke and Birthday Night (2/4), New Member Breakfast (2/5), Super

Bowl Sunday (2/5), Valentine’s Dinner and Dance (2/11), Bingo Night (2/16), Chowdah Challenge (2/19), and Mardi Gras Party (2/28)! And of course, we will continue with our Friday nights and Jazz night. Don’t miss incredible jazz pianist Ray Biscoglia’s performance for us on Wed., Feb. 15.

Our Committee wants to add new entertainment in this year that we believe will be of interest to current members as well as our new members. Watch for more to come in future Compass issues.

As always, we welcome your ideas to improve our great club as well as increasing our membership. We are working closely with the Membership Committee to plan Member Appreciation nights, Member of the Month, along with New Member Welcome. This is a great time to invite your friends, neighbors and family to visit, and hopefully join CYC for an experience like no other.
