SDSU KSA 뉴스 What Is KSA? What do we do? What are we planning?
February 28, 2015 2015 년 2월 28일
KSA is the Korean Student Association. The purpose of KSA is to promote and educate members about Korean culture. It is an association that is open to all SDSU students. KSA hosts General Body Meetings (GBMs) once a week on Thursdays from 5 P.M. to 6 P.M. in the Metztli Room in the Aztec Student Union. During GBM’s KSA will be playing Korean Music, discussing about Korean history, participating in weekly challenges, as well as playing traditional Korean games. KSA will be promoting Korean Cinema culture by watching Korean films during the last meetings of every month. KSA has many fun things for this semester, for example, the introduction of Families and elaborate socials. The Officers will work very hard to make sure that every social event is enjoyable and memorable for every KSA member.

안녕하세요? As secretary of KSA and editor of this newsletter, I am proud to present the February edition. To be honest, I had quite a fun time making this newsletter. The January edition was the first one ever and it was very stressful making sure it was perfect. Now that I have a clear idea, this newsletter was easier and better organized right from the start! I was having such a rough time during the end of January and the month of February. I had a lot of work to do for KSA and it cut in on a lot of time. I am still putting in a lot of time and effort into my KSA duties and I am happy to say that I did better this month than when I first started. I now have a clear idea with my duties and I have visions for the following newsletters to come, especially March. In March we have SDSU’s annual Korean Culture Night (KCN) happening on the 19th. I plan on having a great section on KCN for the March edition, please look forward to it! More information about KCN can be found on the last page! Best, Abel Valdivia
Hello everyone, I cannot believe it is already the end of February! February marks the first complete month of the KSA General Body Meetings. First of all, I would like to thank each and every one of the officers on the board and to all the general members that come out to support us every week. I cannot imagine a club without all of our members! <3 February was a special month because it was a month of bonding and building friendships. I had created the family program and each family had their own socials and every family had the opportunity of attending general socials. It was awesome and touching to see friendships blossom before my own eyes. I am so excited to see these friendships strengthen over the following months. Speaking of which, next month will be another eventful month and one of the major events I am looking forward to is the annual Korean Culture Night. The KSA officers have all worked extremely hard to help the advisor put this event together and I cannot wait to see this spectacular event unfold. Wait for my review about it next month J

Hello everyone, It is crazy to think that it has already been a month since KSA started this semester. I have really enjoyed getting to know everyone and meeting new faces. I hope to continue to get closer with all of the members through the rest of this year! I have also had so much fun bonding with people at our events. I feel like KSA is starting to become like a family! So far, my favorite events were FamBam at the beach, and the huge combined family social at Tapioca Express. It was great to just hang out at the beach and go swimming. I even learned a few new games from the members! Overall, I feel like I have grown quite a bit in the last month. Being the Event Coordinator is pushing me to learn how to balance my time more effectively. I am also learning just how much prior planning goes into making events and coordinating schedules. I always have about 3 different calendars with me at all times to help me not mix up dates, but it has also been so much fun to come up with creative ways to bring people together. I really do look forward to what the rest of this semester holds! – Rachel Lee, Event Coordinator
So far being vice president for KSA has been a pretty good job. I have liked all the themes we have decided upon for the GBM’s. I also think that the people that have shown up to the meetings have also had a good time, which is great to see them enjoying their time at the meetings. I, for the most part, think that everyone gets their work done on time which is a very good thing. The only issue I have had was only in the beginning, partly over Winter Break, but other than that, I have had no major issues that I have had to deal with. I assume the other Socials have been lots of fun from the pictures I have seen, I had a lot of fun at the Tapioca Express social with everyone. I think KSA is going in the right direction with everything that we are doing. I am sure that the future socials and GBM’s will be lots of fun for the rest of the semester. Please look forward to them! – Alex Kullman, Vice President
In the month of February, since it was the first month, there were a lot of predicaments and uncertainty towards the direction of the events and the goal of the organization. Now that a month has passed by, I now have a larger picture the direction of the club and my part in it. It is needless to say that we all committed errors in the beginning but as time passes by we learn from our mistakes and carry towards our common goal as a team. We all build up from one another and one can specially see this in our Thursday meetings when we work as a team to keep the dynamic environment for our members. We are enthusiastic of our future adventures and events this club will aspire to execute and achieve a greater sense of community as a whole. Furthermore, as an officer I have learned many things, like that each officer is a leg and KSA is the spider. Without one leg, the organization is going to have a harder time standing up. I have realized that I took on a bigger role than I had anticipated. Now is the time to go forward and learn from the past so I can definitely do a better job, now that I have a better understanding of my role. – Jose Garcia, Treasurer

KSA Officers for Spring 2015
I am Tran Vu, a third year, Criminal Justice major, and I am from Anaheim, CA. Since I had not been officially appointed as KSA's Historian until the beginning of February, I cannot say that I have any board experiences to report at the moment. So far, however, I am getting more accustomed to being a part of the board and integrating myself amongst the club in general. Even though there is a downside of not being able to attend the GBMs or the board meetings, this merely provides me with more initiative to stay on top of things and attempt my hardest to keep in contact with the rest of the members. As Historian, I hope to eternalize the club's memories through different aspect, whether it is through formal means, such as sending pictures in for recap videos, or something silly like Caption This photo. I think it will be enjoyable for myself, as well as the members. Having been Historian for a different club before, I will attempt to utilize the lessons I have learned through that term for the benefit of KSA. I look forward to being able to be a part of the administrative efforts for KSA, in addition to being allowed to implement my own ideas to better the club. It is exciting to see how much the club has progressed from two years ago and how much more organized meetings and positions are. Scheduling events may be difficult due to schedules, but it will be worth the effort in the long run!
During the moth of January, I spent a lot of time trying to put together the new website as well as starting up our Instagram and Twitter accounts. The officer team put in a lot of work over the winter break to get everything together for the first meeting too! I am really proud of the work our team did, and I am happy with all the changes we are incorporating. We created meeting themes that I found to be new and different, as well as added new weekly challenges for Instagram, caption this photots from club events, and members of the week. This is a great opportunity for members to have more involvement in the club. The socials we had have also been fun! We already had two socials and a few family socials. The FamBam social had great weather and being at the beach was so peaceful! It was a great way to get to know members I had not met yet. Our first family social was also successful! We had a good turnout and many of the members talked with people they had not talked with before. I hope these socials will continue to allow members to bond with new people and find common interests. – Justine Poulin, Public Relations
I think, so far, KSA this semester has been very fun for the members. I think that the family system is a great addition to the KSA structure and that the website is better because it has a mobile-friendly layout and does not have problems loading. I think that the general meeting themes are a good idea and that our members enjoy the diverse activities we offer in each meeting, for example, teaching members parts of a dance and playing some Korean trivia with a Jeopardy game. I also think that having the committees for members to join is a good idea. These committees can be a great opportunity for our members to get experience with officer duties and will look great on a resume. I like the hashtag and caption this ideas that were presented into this semester. I am excited to keep helping KSA with new and fresh ideas to give members a fun and memorable experience! – Taylor Flores, Student Advisor

Committees Program Another addition to KSA this semester is the introduction of the Committees Program! This program allows members to become even more involve with KSA by having members share their ideas to help KSA grow and receive more promotions according to which committee they are a part of. There will be 3 committees this semester: Fundraising Committee, Public Relations Committee, & Events Planning Committee. Committees are planned to meet bi-‐monthly and each committee will have its own goal that will help promote or fund KSA.
Fundraising Committee
Event Planning Committee
Public Relations Committee
The Event Planning Committee aims to make more fun events for KSA. Besides the events that are already pre-‐planned, the members can add their own interests into what other types of events KSA members would like to go out on. This Committee will meet
The Public Relations Committee will gather to discuss, adjust, and find ways to better promote KSA on social media sites. They will also create and adjust hashtags on these sites so it is easier for students to post and look up for better, easier, and faster online promotion and access! This Committee will meet
The Fundraising Committee aims to create more, new, and different ideas to fundraise for KSA. This committee will find new places that KSA can go to, as well as think of what type of events KSA can do to raise funds. This Committee will meet Wednesdays at 7 P.M. in

The Man From Nowhere
This term, KSA will have Korean Movie screenings for members every final Thursday of every month. This month, we watched the film 아저씨. This film is known in the United States as the Man From Nowhere. This film shows a man who used to work for the Korean CIA, living in a run down apartment complex as a pawnshop dealer. He has a neighbor with a daughter. The neighbor woman is a drug dealer and eventually gets caught. The mother dies and the daughter is sold to a
woman who takes out children’s corneas and sells them in the black market for a large sum of money. The mysterious man sets out to find the girl and her mother and ends up fighting with drug traffickers along the way who are tied in with the selling of the child. Overall, the movie was not seen by any of our members and was a first viewing for all! Everyone enjoyed the movie and enjoyed that we provided snacks for them to eat while watching this action packed thriller!

Event Highlights So far we have had 3 general socials for
KSA. There was the FamBam that took
place in La Jolla Beach, Korean Food Outing
at Manna BBQ and Norebang at Min Sok
I had a lot of fun in the FamBam social. It was a very fun day
and I was glad I got to meet new people and bond with my
KSA members. The group for the day headed out to the beach
and once everyone was together we set up blankets and put on
some music on a relatively loud speaker. Since we were a small
group everyone did what their heart desired. Some of us went
to be around the ocean water while others decided to take in
some sun. After idling for a while we played a few games and
then headed back to campus for some food at the Roboto
Tokyo grill. Overall the experience was like a nice day out with
friends. It was pleasant and I hope more people join KSA to 1.

Going to Korean BBQ social was really great! I did not expect to eat a lot of meat. When we got there and
looked at the menu I did not expect to see all the different types of meat that we were able to choose from! What really surprised me the most was that we were able to eat as much meat as we wanted for two hours, the amount of meat we actually ate during that time, and how fast they would bring the meat before we were even done with the one that was still on the grill. The side dishes were really good, but I mostly ate the meat with the pickled radish. Overall it was really fun and I ate too much that I thought my stomach was going to burst, but it did not matter, the food was amazing! I would really like to go back again Going to Norebang was such a fun and lively experience! It
took members a little time to warm up and get comfortable
but once they did, the music began and did not stop! I was
very proud of our members for stepping up and taking the
microphones. It showed comfortability and familiarity with
everyone there. The food that was ordered was fantastic and
we even had a little audience outside our window to the
