Hello Everyone,

WE, your new Board are excited about the ideas that we have to help Sequim Arts become friendlier. We hope that all of you will want to be part of the fun and join us in making Sequim Arts just that, more fun. You know the old say-ing about “Many Hands Make Lite Work,” is true and also much more fun. Lets make this year one for the record book and all join togeth-

er for the Ride.

February is here and the Student Art Show is right around the Corner in March. We need to show the kids that be-ing an Artist and being part of our Group is fun and a great way to meet new people, so let’s take time to help our new member, Steve Edi-

son, with the Student Art Show because it is a big job. He has some really great ideas but we

need you to be part of it.

Our February meeting has a wonderful Artist Allyn M. Cowan demo to look forward to. She does Adorable Dogs Paintings; You are go-ing to love seeing this one. Please come join

in the fun.

You must re-join Se-quim Arts by March 1

quainted and enjoy the FUN we are going to

have this year.

Hugs to you all,

Maryann

At our February 22nd Sequim Arts meeting held at St. Luke’s Epis-copal Parrish Hall, we welcome Allyn M. Cow-an as our special pre-senter. The meeting starts with refresh-ments at 9:30am, busi-ness & announcements at 10:00am, & Allyn’s presentation at about

10:45am.

Allyn needed to work on something for her own pleasure. She was searching for a theme that she could expand upon, and came up with the idea of using satire and animals. The first inspiration was her own cat. They al-ways referred to her as “Space Cat” because if someone reached out

to touch her, there would be nothing

but space.

Allyn painted a comic-book de-signed cover that was titled “Space Cat”, and enjoyed coming up with subtitles like “Letters from the Cat Box”. After that, she realized that in order to con-tinue she would

need to start with the source such as the magazine, book title, etc. and then find an animal to illustrate the

mock-up cover.

Lots of magazine titles lend them-selves to animal puns, although some are a bigger stretch than oth-ers. The easiest one to develop a

theme around is the AARP Maga-zine, which she re-named to “AARF Magazine”. Allyn can always look on the internet to find an old dog that

does new tricks.

The Featured Artist for February is Erica McClain. Her artwork

is created with toothpicks and ink. Her artwork of Asian influ-

ence will be on display all month.

Erica had a major motor vehicle accident in February 2008. It

resulted in her having a traumatic brain injury. Prior to the ac-

cident Erica was a leather artist, creating one of a kind shoes.

After the accident she started creating art using toothpicks and

ink. Many pieces have 100-200 hours of detailed designs in

them.

Brain Freeze is her first work after her accident. It depicts the

human brain in watercolor. It is a happy mystery for her to dis-

cover her fascination with Asian art.

The guest speaker at the January meeting was Natalie Brown. Her whimsical creatures, all done in copper and welded with love, take on a life of their own as she takes exquisite care to expose their unique characteristics. Welding has been a part of her life since high school and creating things is something she remembers from the time she was a toddler. It was very apparent that her love of life and her study of all things takes a huge role in her finished product. She is especially

affected by nature and the cycle of life…with elements both seen and unseen.

In case you missed her presentation, look for Natalie and her company, Steel Coyote, locally at

Farmers Markets, Arts and Craft Shows, and Etsy, https://www.etsy.com/people/olympicmist .
