BRADDOCK STREET UNITED METHODIST CHURCH RESCUES A SIERRA LEONEAN LECTURER FROM

NJALA UNIVERSITY

Roland Suluku suffered ten years from severe pain in his left hip. Medical services in

Sierra Leone could not relieve him of his pain, neither his income to replace his hip.

He decided to look unto the Lord. After 9 years of waiting, God divinely connected

him in 2012 to a United Methodist Church missionary who visited the orphanage in

Bo. He prayed with him and God connected him to a physiotherapist missionary

(angel Gabriel). This angel ran with the message from Sierra Leone to Braddock

Street church in Virginia. The grace of God engulfed the church and they pulled

resources together for his hip to be replaced. All

resources for his travel, operation, accommoda-

tions and food were provided by the church mem-

bership. Scheduled date of operation was June,

2013, but Satan tried to stop it. Intercession by the

church and other faithful servants of God knocked

Satan down. Suluku arrived in Virginia on Novem-

ber 23 and the operation was performed on De-

cember 3, 2013. A five star hotel room was pro-

vided where he stayed. God expedited the healing

process and seven days after the operation he gave

up the wheel chair and started walking with a cane

- he is now healed! I am 47 years old, returned on

January 14, 2014, at age 20. I thank God and all

members of the Church who helped accomplish

God’s plan for my life.

Christmas Giving

Thank you for your generosity during the Advent Season! Our Christmas offering totaled $19,805! This will be split among the CRC, Mercy Hospital and Joseph Akol’s student loans. In addition, sales of our beautiful alternative gift cards allowed us to give $1930 to the Evans Home and $470 toward the BSUMC CRC trip this summer! We also provided gifts for 161 children through the Angel Tree Ministry, provided 61 Christmas baskets to our community, filled 10 bags of paper goods for CCAP, hosted the Adult Day Care Christmas party - just to name a few! We are Followers of Jesus: Loving God, Loving Others, Serving the World.

What is Stephen Ministry? Bear one another’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ (Galatians 6:2, NRSV).

Stephen Ministry is the one-to-one lay caring ministry that takes place in congregations that use the Stephen Series system.

Stephen Ministry congregations equip and empower lay caregivers - called Stephen Ministers - to provide high-quality, confidential, Christ-centered care to people who are hurting.

If you have further interest in this program, please contact Rev. Adam Sowder at 540-667-3366 or

email him at [email protected].

Shrove Tuesday - March 4, 2014, at 6:00 PM The UMM will provide dinner in the church fellowship hall for BSUMC members. Pancakes, sausage, apples, and perhaps some surprises will

be served, along with beverages. A free-will offering will be accepted to help support UMM missions. The courtesy of an RSVP would be greatly appreciated as we wish to hold down expenses while providing enough for all attendees. Please RSVP to the church office no later than Friday,

February 28, by calling (540) 667-3366 or emailing [email protected].

BOWL-A-THON How's your bowling arm? The District annual Bowl-A-Thon

supporting Heart Havens is coming on a Saturday sometime in late February - early March. Heart Havens is a program set up by the

Virginia Conference of the United Methodist Church of ten residential homes for those who are intellectually challenged. Since 2002 it has

operated independently with its own board of directors, and it is supported by the UMM. The annual Bowl-A-Thon is set up to support Heart Havens with the proceeds. We need teams to compete with all

those other churches (and with each other) and fight the winter doldrums. Look for future announcements and get to practicing

(gutter balls are SO embarrassing).

A Call to Prayer and Self-Denial 2014 Sound Foundations: Sound Missions

Prayer and giving have long been vital to women’s organizations in the church. One way that United Methodist Women members combine prayer and giving is during the time of Call to Prayer and Self-Denial. The United Methodist Women established mission institutions all across the United States and the world over one hundred years ago. The primary purpose of these institutions remains to serve and protect women and children. Mission institutions must maintain building code standards and must be prepared to renovate or expand as needed. Over the years some important mission institutions have been forced to close due to insufficient funding to meet property needs. The offering from 2014 will help make it possible to offer grants both nationally and internationally to keep our mission institution buildings safe and functioning effectively. This year’s program is scheduled for Tuesday, March 4, at 7:00 PM in the Chapel. Our speaker will be Reverend J. Adam Sowder. The UMM will be serving up a delicious pancake supper at 6:00 PM in the Fellowship Hall prior to the meeting.

As our church attendance grows, we have need of new hymnals and the worship team is inviting our

church family to give a The United Methodist Hymnal or The Faith We Sing songbook in honor or

memory of someone dear to you.

The current cost of the hymnal is $18.00 and The Faith We Sing is $12.00.

We will be ordering approximately 47 hymnals and 15 The Faith We Sing songbooks. If you wish to place

one or more of these books in the

Sanctuary in memory or honor of

someone, please send the

information and your check to the

church office to the attention of

Helen Hodges.

It is our hope that you will find this a

meaningful way to honor someone

you love and to enhance the worship

experience of all those who attend

our worship services.

TURKEY DINNER

AND AUCTION

We are preparing for our annual auction and turkey dinner to be held on

Saturday, March 22, 2014, from 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM. The Youth are raising funds for summer mission

trips both locally around Winchester and to Sierra Leone! This fun (and very tasty!) event is our biggest fundraiser. People sometimes view auctions as a

chance to get a good deal but THIS one is really about equipping our youth to represent Braddock Street in touching the World for Christ - local and abroad. Please consider and pray about a set amount you’d like to spend to support mission and then bid it on one (or more) of

our awesome items, not only to bless the mission but even get something cool, too! Dinner Tickets go on Sale March 2.

Tickets will be available for purchase in the Greetorium after each service.

$10.00 for adults $5.00 for ages 3-9

Buffet Turkey Dinner includes: turkey, mashed potatoes, dressing, gravy,

cranberry sauce, rolls, green beans, assorted desserts and drinks. Eat well while

supporting a great cause!

If you are interested in donating an auction item, please contact Kristin at 540-667-3366

or email her at [email protected].

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!

Sometimes It Takes an Army On Sunday, January 5, sixty two youth and sponsors gathered in the icy weather to play "Army of the One," a full scale, total campus version of Romans and Chris-tians. Similar to hide and seek it involves Romans hunting down Christians to con-vert to Caesar or be imprisoned. We had a great time switching sides, running, plotting and hiding. The fellowship hall hosts a jail which can be potentially es-

caped from. Kristin's office becomes the tem-ple of Caesar, and all the classrooms, hall-ways and closets can hold secret places to worship by writing prayers or light-ing candles. There is also a very real lesson of faith within the fun of this game. Not every-one in the world today has the same religious freedoms we do. It is a reminder to pray for our brothers and sisters in Christ all over the globe. And also a reminder that ultimately we have a victorious Christ!

Insufficient Sleep Is a Public Health Epidemic Sleep is increasingly recognized as important to public health, with sleep insufficiency linked to motor

vehicle crashes, industrial disasters, and medical and other occupational errors.1 Unintentionally falling

asleep, nodding off while driving, and having difficulty performing daily tasks because of sleepiness all

may contribute to these hazardous outcomes.

Persons experiencing sleep insufficiency are also more likely to suffer from chronic diseases such as

hypertension, diabetes, depression, and obesity, as well as from cancer, increased mortality, and re-

duced quality of life and productivity.

Sleep Hygiene Tips The promotion of good sleep habits and regular sleep is known as sleep hygiene. The following sleep

hygiene tips can be used to improve sleep:

Go to bed at the same time each night and rise at the same time each morning.

Avoid large meals before bedtime.

Avoid caffeine and alcohol close to bedtime.

● Avoid nicotine. (CDC.gov)

Health Notes by Debra Miles, RN, BA, FCN

We are in the process of updating our church membership data base. Once we complete this task we will have a very accu-rate data base which will be very useful and will help the church staff in numerous ways. For instance, it helps us keep track of the church family, it helps with statistical reports at year end, it helps with contacts that may be needed with members, and it is useful for historical records, too. I would like to ask you to please help us keep it accurate. You can do that by noti-fying the church office if any of the following occur:

● your name changes [i.e. change in marital status] ● your address changes ● your home phone number changes ● you cell phone number changes ● your email changes ● you have an addition to your family (i.e. new birth or adoption) ● your children grow up, move to their own home and have their own address

It would be a blessing if you helped us keep the data base current and accurate, so please remember to let us know when there are changes. I thank you in advance for your assistance!

Barbara White has volunteered her time and skills to build a better format for the data and continues to work on getting it cleaned up. Stefanie Nave has been instrumental in getting membership information updated. I appreciate their time and diligence. I hope you will join me in thanking each one for her hard work!

In addition, I would like to take time to offer my thanks to all those who have volunteered their time to work in the church office over the years that I have been at BSUMC. Each person has been a blessing and I am grateful to each one. Currently Pat Boxwell, Barbara White, Phoebe West, and Jackie Ruff are office volunteers. Ladies, I am grateful to each of you for your help and faithful service.

Blessings to all,

Kim Ludwick

BSUMC Church Secretary

The Compass Article Submission Guidelines

Anyone wishing to submit an article or announcement for the monthly newsletter can use the following guidelines for direction and assistance.

1. Please keep your articles to no more than 150

words. Often, less is more and less is best. Articles may be edited if they are too long. Word docs without any formatting are preferred.

2. You may provide a CLEAR photograph to go with your article -

preferably only one per article. If the photograph is not clear or the resolution is poor, the photo will not be used.

3. Remember copyright laws and always identify your sources.

4. The newsletter’s primary focus is the communication of NEWS &

EVENTS of interest to our congregation. If you do not have any news or events to report or communicate to the congregation, please do not feel you are required to draft “something” - an article from each and every group is not required each month.

I want to take this opportunity to thank the members of the Braddock Street congregation for your prayers, get well cards, and expressions of well wishes during my

recent illness. The support that my family and I received from the church staff, the ministers, and the entire

congregation was tremendous. Your expressions of concern and love can hardly be repaid with a simple thank you. Please know that we appreciate everything that was

done on our behalf. Thank you again for your kind support. Don, Marcella, and the Shirley Family

I just wanted to thank everyone who helped the Grace United Methodist Church of Middletown to be allowed to use some of your “spaces” for our Church Directory. Everyone who came there said you all were great, very friendly, and helpful. We appreciate that so much. Their pictures look wonderful. Again, thank you. Donna Peterson, Coordinator

Dear Braddock Street Family, Many, many thanks for all of your help, thoughts, concerns and prayers. God Bless, Rec and Helen Brown

WEDDING COORDINATOR NEEDED: An additional
