SCHOOL SAFETY

Page 2

BVMS has recently had 8 cameras installed to monitor the safety of our school. What does this mean to parents visiting the school? If you have not been to school lately, you will notice at the front door. Much like the elementaries, you

will need to buzz in at the front door and wait for the secretary to admit you into the school. Once upon entering, you will be asked to report directly to the office. Technology..... to help keep us safe!

Ohio Achievement Assessment Information

Q: What is the Ohio Achievement Assessment (OAA)?A: The OAA tests students in grades 3-8 in Reading and Math. In addition, OAA tests students in Grade 5 and 8 in Science.

Q: Why?A: Ohio law says the students must be tested in these subjects each year.

Q: What will my child be tested on?A: The State of Ohio has a list of the things the students should be able to know and do at the end of each grade. These “things” are called indicators. The tests are based on these indicators. This list of indicators can be seen on the Web at www.ode.state.oh.us.

Q: When will this happen?A: All students will be tested April 23-Reading, April 25-Math, and April 30- Science. It is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT that NO APPOINTMENTS BE SCHEDULED DURING THIS TIME. Research has shown that students will do better on these tests if they take the test at the same time that all of the other students take the test.

Q: What can I do to help my child be successful on this test?A: There are many things that you can do to help:

The most important thing is to make sure that your child is at school every day. Help your child develop a positive attitude toward school and learning in general. Know when your child has homework (different teachers assign different amounts of

homework), and make sure the work is done. Do not do the homework for your child. Your teacher needs to know what your child knows and does not know in order to help your child learn. Also, make sure the homework is returned to school.

If you have questions or comments, ASK! Likewise, if the teacher calls, please return the call.

On test days, and all days, try to help create a calm environment for your child as they get ready to go to school.

Support the school, and support your child. We are all in this together☺.

Q: What will happen on test days?A: The students will receive a light breakfast, then begin taking the 2 ½ hour test (yes, 2 ½ hours). The students will be expected to work on the test at least 1 hour and 45 minutes.

5th Grade Science Christmas Cards

You read that correctly!! As part of their study of Electricity and Electrical Circuits, Mrs. Sheppard and Mrs. Spaulding led their classes through some shock ing d i sco ver ie s . Connect ing the i r c i rcu i t s correctly, they created brightly illuminated holiday expressions. Please see the pictures on our web pa ge to catch a l l the electrifying excitement!

5th Grade Native AmericansThe fifth grade students spent the month o f December learning about different Native American cultural groups. They learned to read and take notes, form paragraphs with topic sentences , deta i l s , and conclusions, as well as basic research skills. One of the most interesting things learned is how instant the Internet is for researching versus using books to find the information. Lots of learning and fun was had! Thank you to all families for your support with this project as well as Mrs. Frase for helping us find materials!

Mr. Elwood’s 6th GradeScience Classes

6th g rade s tudents took advantage of the mild weather to conduct a sc ience l ab outside. Students hopped, walked backwards, walked regular, and speed walk for 5 and 10 meter s . S tudents recorded their time and use the data to determine their speed. Once completed, students used their results to create a graph.

Please see the web page for photos!

Lending a Helping Hand

When tragedy hit a small town schoo l in Ne wtown Connecticut, the students at Buckeye Valley were more than willing to lend a hand. Students from various grade levels traced their hands and designed them to show the s tudents in Newtown that they were not alone. The hands were sent to Newtown where they were combined with thousands of other hands across the country. The hands were hung in the new school with the message “You are not alone.  You are loved.  You are safe.” The Barons Way of lending a hand truly showed the caring and supportive students we have here at Buckeye Valley Middle School.

Boomerang’s Can Teach Us More Than We Thought

Written by: Devin Parsley, Tr i s t in Landacre , Chr i s Meissner:

Chet Snouffer, a boomerang maker and world champion thrower visited our class. We learned that there are different k inds o f boomerangs . We learned that boomerangs can go high and slow or low and fast. We even learned that they used to use boomerangs to ki l l animals. We got to decorate our own boomerangs! Then we got to go outside and learn how to throw them. Boomerangs

always come back to you. Chet taught us that if we are mean to someone they might come back and be mean to us. If we are nice to someone they might come back and be nice to us. These are all the things we learned and did with Chet.

Library News:Reading Olympics

5th grade was the grade level who read the most books in our Reading Olympics Contest. They enjoyed a donut and juice treat in the library thanks to our amazing PTO! The PTO wa s ver y generous in sponsoring this endeavor! 82 out of the 93 5th graders who won enjoyed some prizes, too!
