Pastor Paul
“…but on every Word that comes forth from the mouth of God.” (Deuteronomy 8:3)
Lent in a Word is _______________.
How would you fill in the blank? How would you summarize the season of Lent in a single
word? The most obvious answers might be “Christ”, “Cross”, “Sin”, “Sacrifice”, “Redemption.”
All those answers work well. Through each week of Lent this spring we will consider a single
word, a single concept or teaching revealed to us through God’s Old Testament revelation,
single moments recorded in the centuries before Christ came to fulfill those promises and
teachings as CHRIST on the CROSS, who gave himself in SACRIFICE to pay the price for our SINS
and bring about our REDEMPTION.
This Lenten series will bring these teachings to heart and mind:
Mine – Exodus 20:1-20; Matthew 22:34-40
Nothing – 2Kings 4:1-7; 1Timothy 1:12-17
Marked – Isaiah 44:1-5; 1Peter 2:4-12
Enlist – Judges 6:7-16; 7:19-22; Ephesians 6:10-18
Invest – Jeremiah 32:1-9; 16-17; 24-25; 36-44; Luke 18:18-27
Finish – 1Kings 11:1-6; John 19:16-18; 28-30
This Lenten series is based on notes written by Dr. Reed Lessing, Concordia Seminary, St. Louis.
Let’s explore some of these Old Testament moments you may have forgotten, or simply not
known, and we will consider just how these events of so long ago still teach, preach, reach, and
apply the Law and Gospel of Christ in our lives yet today.
God’s Peace be with you always,
Pastor Paul
Treasurer
Happy February! Here we are with a slew of events coming up like Ground Hog Day - will he see
his shadow? Or Super Bowl Sunday - will our favorite team win? Then there is the celebration
of Chinese New Year – the year of the snake! Don’t forget to make dumplings on the eve of
Chinese New Year! Followed by the celebration of Mardi Gras/Fat Tuesday. King Cakes are a
vibrant part of the Mardi Gras Tradition. And inside one slice of the cake is a tiny plastic or gold
or porcelain baby said to represent baby Jesus. The solemn time of Ash Wednesday arrives,
and we stop to think, “What should I give up for Lent?” Just to turn around and celebrate the
next day with our loved one(s) - a Happy Valentine’s Day! Do you know the story of St.
Valentine? Oh yes – President’s Day is a National holiday a few days following Valentine’s Day.
I’m exhausted just thinking about all the activities coming up!
So why is the treasurer reminiscing over February events? Well, after spending too many
hours in January to finalize the December 2012 financial statements just to find out that the
budget year ended in a large deficit, having stayed up most of the night to prepare for the
Hosanna Council meeting and later at home finding a line item not presented clearly (so
frustrating), and finally preparing a one page financial highlights of 2012 to present during the
three church services on the last Sunday of January hit me like a huge wave bringing me down
into a state of depression. My physical health due to stress and lack of sleep culminated in
weakness and getting sick followed by a nightmare that I didn’t do a very good presentation
of the highlights. My gratitude did not come through with praise for all your support related to
the Campus Development donations.
Please accept my apologies for not recognizing in a more humble manner how much you have
contributed to the support of our fund raising efforts. As we move into the month of February,
I will stop worrying about the general operating conditions of Hosanna. Instead, I will,
“Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him.” Psalm 37:7a. Having our thoughts and wishes,
our fears and hopes, hushed into calm and quiet in that great peace of God which passes all
understanding is a blessing and; therefore, it is time to let go and have some uplifting fun in
February! Blessings…

Stewardship
In Halley's Bible Handbook, Revised Edition, a few years ago I found the following paragraph.
"It is a Glorious thing to be a Christian, the Most Exalted privilege of mankind. To accept
Christ as Saviour, Lord, and Master, and to strive Sincerely and Devotedly to Follow in the Way
of Life which He taught, is, certainly, and by far, the most reasonable, and most satisfactory
way to live. It means Peace, Peace of Mind, Contentment of Heart, Forgiveness, Happiness,
Hope, Life, Life Here and Now, Life Abundant, LIFE THAT SHALL NEVER END."
With this paragraph I find it helps me and guides me in the direction I should be going in
my daily stewardship walk with our Lord. God wants us to love Him, serve Him, obey Him, and
only Him. I find myself forgetting that and tend to wander down a path or two that ends in a
roadblock. If I had "listened" to God, I would have stayed on the path He was directing me, and
this path would continue daily, never ending. Let us as members of Hosanna keep God in front
of us, leading us each day as He would have us to go. Think of what peace and joy we all would
have each day if we but "listen" to our Lord!

We are doing a garage sale on Saturday, March 16th. So save your odds and ends for us. It will
be held in the NEW parking lot from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm. We will be looking for sorters and
pricers and helpers at the sale. We haven’t done this for a few years so let’s make this one the
best! What about adding a bake sale to this?
I will be putting out a recipe for egg bake so we can have the same thing on Easter. Just to make it
easier for the youth. So I will need your help for that also.
Mark your calendar for April 21st - - Church picnic!!
God’s blessings,
Marge

Got a Hot Date for Valentine’s Day?
(actually it will be on Friday, February 15th) Come enjoy dinner in a lovely Italian Restaurant, well, sort of – Enjoy a candle lit dinner in the
Upper Room – which will be our Italian Restaurant on that night. Make your reservation for 5:00, 5:30, 6:00, 6:30, 7:00, or 7:30, and enjoy a wonderful meal served personally by Hosanna’s High School Youth Group. You will have your choice of 2 entrees, beverage, & dessert, in a beautiful
setting with a little Deano on the air. A free will donation will be taken to help us with expenses to the National LCMS Youth Gathering
in San Antonio, TX in July.
LWML
Hosanna LWML sponsors Lenten lunches. Needed are people willing to prepare and serve light
lunch meals such as soups, stews or sandwiches. Quantity recipes are available. Donations of
side dishes to accompany the meal are also needed. These might be vegetable trays, bread items
and desserts. Your financial donations above expenses will support the youth going to the
National Youth Conference. Thanks in advance for your help!
Please contact Iris Curtis at (612)816-5102 to volunteer.
