2008: a challenging and remarkable year!

Economically 2008 was both a challenging and a remarkable year! Early in 2008

donations lagged behind 2007 and 2006 gifts, requiring the Joint Highlands Camp Committee and staff to implement a conservative revised budget. Rising fuel and food costs significantly affected two major areas of the 2008 budget. At the same time, falling interest rates enabled us to refinance our mortgage and line of credit at a 5.70% rate.

In June, facing cash flow concerns in our high expense time of the year, we approached our banker requesting an increased line of credit. In June our balance on the Line of Credit was $304,900. This increase was approved by our bank, but we did not have to draw additional funds in 2008 due to an unexpected and generous gift of $100,000 in unre-stricted funds from the Presbytery of Denver.

Throughout the summer the Presbytery of Plains and Peaks explored financial options that

my highlands inspired decision

“I just want to pray for all us teens because today’s society makes it so hard to be a Christian.” This

emotional prayer, shared by a camper during Week 6’s all-camp worship this summer, changed my life. For about the past year, I have been thinking about the possibility of going into youth ministry. This moment, among other events this summer up at camp, proved to me that God is in fact calling me to do it. I want to be able to show teens that living a life of faith is more awesome than anything that this world can offer them and that there are people here for them that God has called to help them in this awesome journey. I have been praying, looking into different seminaries, and talking to close friends about this decision (all who have supported me greatly) and right now I am leaning toward Austin Theological Presbyterian Seminary in Austin, Texas. I have a year and a half left of my dance major here at CSU, but afterwards I am planning on attending seminary and receiving my Master of Divinity with an emphasis on youth ministry. I cannot thank those people enough who have supported me. I have to give a special thanks to my Highlands family

who has always inspired me and supported me in my faith journey. I am truly blessed to be a part of such a great ministry and I will never be able to express as much gratitude towards Highlands as it deserves. I just know that God sent me to Highlands with this plan for my life in mind, and I am infinitely grateful. I only ask for prayers for me and my journey and that everyone continues to BE FEARLESS in their walk with our Amazing Love, Jesus Christ.

As we moved into the fall we saw many generous gifts given in memory and honor of loved ones! Birthdays and anniversaries were celebrated with gifts to Highlands. The lives of loved ones were remembered with gifts to Highlands. Christmas gifts were made to children and grandchildren in the form of gifts to Highlands. One congregation made a gift in the form of a tithe on their building campaign! In 2008 we saw our number of donations grow with 725 gifts given by donors. . . compared to 501 gifts in 2007.

Work on our Capital Campaign helped us to discover that a portion of your gift to Highlands qualifies for the Colorado Child Care Contribution Credit. We are grate-ful to the work of the Roecker Consulting Group and Bob Matchett, in researching this benefit for our donors. Child

Care Contribution Credit forms have been sent to all donors.

In November, an unrestricted gift of $40,000 allowed us to purchase a much needed “new to us” pickup truck. Long-time friend Loren Maxey has added a

new plow to this truck helping us to meet an important winter time need! The balance of this gift is being held to make our mandatory principal reduction on the Line of Credit on March 1st.

December brought generous gifts in many forms! For our first Quilt Auction quilters provided over 50 quilts and quilted items. Generous buyers helped us to raise over $13,000 to reduce our mortgage! A good time was had by many at the Christmas Party and Quilt Auction, and many thanks go to Chrissy Starcher and all of our talented quilters!

Following the Christmas party, a friend of Highlands decided that the Retreat Center needed a piano and a beautiful new Yamaha piano was delivered in time for Christmas! This special gift was given in memory of the joyful life of Don Kirkpatrick. It will be used by many guests of Highlands to make beautiful music!

Additional year end gifts for debt reduction, including one gift for $100,000, allowed us to further reduce our mortgage! We are so grateful for many generous donors who made what began as a very challenging year become a year of unexpected blessings and remarkable gifts!

stewardship reportby Maria Shupe, Executive Director

The Holman Bible Dictionary defines stewardship as “utilizing and managing all resources God

provides for the glory of God and the betterment of His creation.” I see our ministry at Highlands as one of stewardship. . . stewardship of some very remarkable resources that God has provided, and it is a unique privilege to be called here. As we look back over 2008 there are some “stewardship statistics” that I would like to share with you.

Debt reduction is essential to Highlands’ long term future. It is through the elimination of our debt that Highlands will be able to expand its mission and ministry. Generous gifts in 2008 have allowed us to reduce our mortgage.

In addition to our mortgage, we currently carry $304,900 on our Line of Credit/Draw Note. By convert-ing this to a draw note in 2008 we were able to fix the rate at 5.70%, providing a considerable savings in interest. In addition, we are able to repay this debt over many years. The Line of Credit was used to provide cash flow in lean times, as we work to reduce our mortgage debt. This debt has been built into the debt elimination plan in our capi-tal campaign. Because of very generous gifts, we have not drawn from our Line of Credit/Draw Note since June of 2008. Your continued unrestricted gifts for operations make this possible!

A second “stewardship statistic” is guest days. . . not a statistic you’ll find in most an-nual reports for churches, but one that is vital to our ministry at Highlands! Guest days are an industry standard for measur-ing the number of folks who use Highlands, taking into account how long they stay and how many meals they eat. As we

work to strengthen our Summer Camp program, increase our marketing, and develop our year-round program-ming for youth and adults, we expect to see our guest days and occupancy rise. This is long-term stewardship as we strengthen program and improve marketing. Increases for 2008 can be attributed to new programming with Day Camp in the Parish of the Plains and Elderhostel.

I am grateful for the stewards I work with at Highlands! Dave Strom, Buddy Jones and Dan Griffee are remarkable stewards of our facilities, keeping them in safe and beautiful condition. We’ve enjoyed new meals and dining experiences with Stuart Hilgenberg as our new Director of Food Service. There are lots of helping hands who ensure that meals at Highlands are healthy and deli-cious! In our office, Margaret Wray and Laura Richard care for our guests and campers with gracious hospitality. Kathy Griffee has become an excellent steward of our fa-cilities, helping guest groups learn how our resources can best fit their needs. Care of our programs has been entrust-ed to Kevin Starcher and Katie Palmer who bring deep faith, theological integrity and imagination and creativity to their work! We wish Katie the very best as she moves on to full-time studies at Iliff; and welcome Carol Heepke to our staff as our Adult Program Facilitator. And the next time your lay your head on your pillow in the Retreat Center, be sure to say a prayer of thanks for Gail, Kathy and Stephanie who make sure that your room is clean and ready when you arrive!

In 2009, please keep Highlands in your prayers. The Joint Highlands Camp Committee has adopted a con-servative budget; and is already holding some budgeted expenses as we wait to see what the early part of 2009 will bring for the economy. Your gifts, especially early in 2009 are important to our ongoing operations! We thank you for your partnership as stewards of Highlands! This ministry would not be possible without you! Grace and peace!

Does your life ever seem to spin out of control like mine does? In this fast paced and quickly

changing world, I find myself taking comfort in things that do not change. Luckily there are a few things in life that do not change. I have been exploring in my mind a few things related to Highlands that don’t change.

Souls are calmed at Highlands. Your blood pressure drops, your mind clears and opens up to the beauty of the majestic mountain valley, and your lungs fill with the cool fresh mountain air before you even get out of your car.

People are lifted up at Highlands. The big “Welcome” sign says it all, as you cross the bridge and enter the Retreat Center where staff and friends are waiting to greet you. You immediately feel welcome and uplifted.

Lives are transformed at Highlands. God refreshes spirits and transforms lives in ways that can only be done at a camp or retreat center.

The need for our Mission at Highlands will not change. Our youth need to experience and have the chance to ac-cept Christ; our future Christian leaders need to be devel-oped and nurtured; our adults need spiritual revival; and lives need to be healed just like they have for 63 years. The future of our churches and our missions is directly

connected to the success of the Mission at Highlands and camp-retreat centers like Highlands. Over 70% of Christian leaders and missionaries say that they made their commit-ment to follow and serve Christ at a camp or retreat center.

Highlands has depended upon and still needs prayers, volunteers, donations, and Christ’s guidance.

As I think about Christmas and my ongoing struggle to give my loved ones gifts that they need versus want, I think about gifts that we all need. We all need to be loved, we all need Christ, and we all need Highlands where we will be loved and experience Christ. I challenge each of you to give someone the gift of Highlands this year. You can give this gift in so many ways. You can send your son or daughter, grandchild, niece or nephew, or neighbor child to summer camp or a youth retreat; you can encour-age everyone you know to attend an event at Highlands; you can arrange a group retreat; and you can donate a camp scholarship. You should also give yourself the gift you really need. We hope to greet each of you at Highlands this year.

Mark is a member of the Timnath Presbyterian Church and has been a volunteer at Highlands for over 26 years.

new this year. . . adventures in faith

Using the natural beauty of the mountains in addition to the exhilarating adventure activities, participants will be invited to reflect upon and grow in their relationship with God. Since Highlands will provide all of the logistical and programmatic elements in this exciting program, we hope to offer an opportunity for youth group leaders to spend their time and energies building meaningful relationships with their youth. Participants will stay in our comfortable cabins and will enjoy bountiful and delicious meals prepared by Highlands. One participant in our pilot program last year shared that “the experience was incomparable to anything else I've ever done, I'll be sure to return next year.” Another participant mentioned it was a gorgeous place and everybody was so nice.

For more information about Adventures in Faith, go to our website www.highlandscamp.org and look under Summer Camps, or call Kevin Starcher, Director of Summer Camp and Youth Events, at (303) 747-2888.

Scholarships are provided through the generous donations of congregations, presbyteries and individuals in order that any camper (child or adult) who would like to attend camp at Highlands Presbyterian Camp and Retreat Center can do so. For more information on scholarships, please call Laura in the Highlands office at (303) 747-2888, or check on-line at www.highlandscamp.org.

Highlands is excited to offer its newest program – Adventures in Faith – in our Summer 2009 schedule. Adventures in Faith is a youth group based high-adventure program for middle and senior high school youth

groups in the summer beauty of the Colorado Rocky Mountains. Throughout each week youth will experience:

Rock climbing near Rocky Mountain National Park • Whitewater rafting on the Cache La Poudre River • Summit hikes in Rocky Mountain National Park • Horseback riding through gorgeous mountain meadows • Challenging high and low ropes courses • Opportunities for archery, canoeing, crafts, and other camp activities • An experience of a lifetime! •

2009 summer camp curriculum. . . “breakthrough”

This summer, campers at Highlands will hear the stories of people whose lives Jesus touched and transformed through

a curriculum titled “Breakthrough.” Through these stories, we will be challenged to consider the biblical mandate to be a neighbor to all of God’s people. The goal of telling God’s stories at camp reflects a belief in the power of stories to pass on meaning and values. Campers learn about God and what God has done in the lives of humans. We are then invited to consider what we in turn know about God and what God has done in our own lives. Furthermore, we are invited to imagine what we, as people of faith, through the power of God in Christ can do in the future so that all of creation may know the peace, love, mercy and justice of Jesus Christ.
