As 2009 unfolds, we find ourselves embroiled in a faltering economy wracked by rising unemployment, a sagging housing market, shrinking portfolios and a

less than rosy future ahead. We also have a new president in place determined to tackle all of these issues and turn things around. We wish him our best and know that it will be an uphill battle and a struggle shared by the tax-paying public.

How about some good news? I’m pleased to announce that due to the efforts of past president Nick Liakas, our region is now sponsored by three authorized Porsche dealerships. We welcome The Auto Gallery of Woodland Hills as Der Auspuff advertiser and sponsor of at least three of our upcoming events this year. We also thank The Auto Gallery General Sales Manager Eric Schwartz for his effort and enthusiasm in making this partnership a reality. The Auto Gallery joins long-term SBR sponsors Rusnak Westlake Porsche and the Santa Barbara Auto Group, and we become one of only a few regions in PCA to enjoy financial support from three dealerships. So when you’re in their areas, stop by, thank them and check out their inventories of new and used Porsches. I’m told there are unheard-of deals to be had.

We also welcome new sponsor and advertiser C&J Aviation, owned and operated by Chuck Smith, who shared those wonderful 356 cars at the December Camarillo breakfast meeting. Thanks for your support, Chuck.

We have a full agenda of enjoyable events headed your way this year. As I write this, our tour to Monterey and Carmel, hosted by Doug and Nancy Maletz, is sold out and promises to be one to remember. There’s the Reagan Presidential Library tour and luncheon on February 21st. We’ll host a Zone 8 Concours Judging School on March 21st for those interested in becoming judges or looking for tips on how to better prepare their cars. Or how about a back-roads tour to the poppy fields on March 28th? If you enjoy a driving challenge, come on out to our Santa Barbara Autocross on March 29th and give it a try. You’ll find flyers for all these events in this edition, so register early.

I’m also pleased to announce that your board has selected two worthy causes for our charity giving this year. We will be supporting Casa Pacifica in Camarillo, a residential care center for neglected and abused children, and the Santa

Barbara Unity Shop, which provides food, clothing and other items to the less fortunate in the Santa Barbara area. You’ll hear more about our plans and how you can help in the months ahead.

So, our region’s future looks bright and will offer its members many opportunities for fun, relaxation and camaraderie. We hope you’ll take advantage of as many of them as possible. In these difficult times, you owe it to yourself to have some fun.

First 2009 Meeting A Reason To CelebrateBy Felix Leader

Photos by John Alfenito

THE OVERCAST SKIES WERE NO MATCH FOR THE NEW Year’s enthusiasm of 115 members and guests at SBR’s first meeting of 2009. The newly landscaped lawn at the

Way-Point Café accommodated 53 Porsches from an early A-Coupe to the newest 997.2 and everything in between.

Newly elected President Dave Stone welcomed the crowd and received a de-served ovation as our new leader. Dave also made the formal presentation of “SBR Man & Woman of The Year” to Nicolas Liakas and Janice Herndon. (Color photo on Page 15.) Although their selection was announced at The Holiday Party in De-cember, Nick and Janice were not in attendance at that event. So, Dave pre-sented the recipients with the plaques honoring their selections in front of the Camarillo Breakfast crowd.

Past President Nick Liakas called up out-going Treasurer Carol Mathieu and thanked her for all her contributions to the success of our region. Presenting her with a gift as a token of our appreciation, Nick reminded us that Carol’s work extended far beyond her duties as club Treasurer.

Dave Stone then turned the tables on Nick, presenting our out-going President with another plaque and a gift basket of goodies as tangible thank-yous for Nick’s unwavering com-mitment to the SBR’s unprecedented growth and success. It was, indeed, a morning to celebrate.

Newly appointed Membership Chair Janice Herndon pro-

vided the daily stats and welcomed the prospective members and the guests of current members.

Jim Van Voorhis and his son, Jim Jr., attended their first breakfast, and Jim Sr. became a new member. Attending their second meeting were Mike & Piper Macchiarella from Porter Ranch. They are Harley-Davidson friends of Jeff & Terri Koskie. Mike Hodson brought his nephew, Ethan Brown, and friend Bailee Bileschi. Jim Mos-ley came to breakfast with his dad, George Mosley.

Member Mike Maneker brought his grandson, Jay. John Barrison brought ten family members; David Kroesen brought along five guests.

So, although the weather was not the sunny, warm variety many of us had hoped for, the friendship and fun that only an SBR gathering can provide more than made up for the cool cli-mate. We hope to see all of our members at the next Camarillo Breakfast Club meeting on February 7, 2009. =

Prizes & Surprises On The PierBy Janice Herndon

THE FIRST 2009 SANTA BARBARA BREAKFAST DREW 84 members and guests arriving in 54 Porsches at the Moby Dick Restaurant on Stearns Wharf. The Moby Dick Res-

taurant began hosting our breakfasts one year ago in January of 2008 with 99 members attending that month. Once again the room was overflowing with members chatting and catch-ing up with holiday stories.

President David Stone welcomed everyone and began the meeting by introducing Mike Zois, Chair of the Santa Barbara Autocross. The autocross is a Zone 8 sanctioned event for points at the Earl Warren Showgrounds on Sunday, March 29. The registration form is found in Der Auspuff and is also dis-tributed at each of the breakfasts. Volunteers are needed, so please contact Mike Zois at [email protected] to go over the list of posts to be manned.

Membership Chair Janice Herndon announced attendance and introduced new member Erich Brown, a transfer in from the California Central Coast, with his 1987 911 Turbo. Attend-ing their first Santa Barbara Breakfast were Jim Van Voorhis Jr., a guest and prospective member with a 1968 912, new mem-ber Jim Van Voorhis Sr., Shawn Smith, guest of Rob Brandt and prospective member with a 928, and member Fermin Cortes.

Tori Bodin was recognized for her writing contributions to Der Auspuff. She has been attending Santa Barbara Region events since she was very small child with her dad, Kent Bodin. Tori penned the Holiday Party article in the January edition. Great job, Tori.

Past President Nicolas Liakas then took the microphone to announce that David Stone was named the Zone 8 Enthusiast of the Year 2008. This is a great honor and well deserved. The award was presented to David at the Zone 8 Awards Banquet held on January 17 at the Marriott Hotel in Marina Del Rey. (Full coverage on Page 10.) Congratulations, David.

Activity Co-Chair Oscar Briones updated us on the upcoming events. The Big Sur-Monterey Bay-Carmel trip is filled passed capacity. Please sign up for the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library Tour and Luncheon on February 21 and the California

Santa Barbara Autocross Chairman Mike Zois

ranks, then surely it is David. Without ever seeking the limelight, without ever appearing flamboyant, without ever offending – David has earned the re-spect and admiration of the entire SBR membership. He is widely regarded as the quiet strength of our brotherhood, both for his efforts in marshalling our endeavors and for his ability to be our ombudsman whenever needed. He has come to be known to us as “Mr. SBR.”

When David first joined SBR’s Board of Directors in the late 1990s, the member-ship roll stood at approximately 250. He launched a membership drive unparal-leled in our region’s history, and by the turn of the last century our numbers had more than doubled. Today, it stands at over 700, mainly due to his continued efforts as our membership chair.

Similarly, David took a very prominent and leading role in the Region’s suc-cessful application to be named PCA Region of the Year in 2001. Further, his efforts were the keystone in SBR being named Zone 8 Region of the Year twice

Zone 8 of the Porsche Club of America conducted its annual Awards Banquet on January 17,

2009 at the Marriott Hotel in Marina del Rey. The party held a special surprise for one of the attendees and for all those who know him so well.

Our new region president, David Stone, was presented with the coveted honor of being named Zone 8’s Enthusiast of the Year! His selection drew praise from all in attendance, especially from his wife, Susan, and the other SBR members who loudly proclaimed their agreement.

Dave joined PCA in September 1997 and has served our region for a decade as its activities and membership chair (the latter from 2000-2005 and 2007-2008), as our volunteer coordinator, as co-chair for our annual concours and our biennial new members picnic, and as our vice president. David was and continues to be a major contributor to our monthly newsletter. He was elected by our membership Region Man of the Year on three occasions.

For 2008, David served as our member-ship chair, a demanding task performed in an exemplary manner. He oversaw

David Stone Honored AsZone 8 Enthusiast of The Year

By Nicolas Liakas our recruiting efforts, commu-nicated with new members, personally introduced them to our veteran members at private and public opportunities, and submitted a monthly column for our newsletter in which he identified the new members and highlighted the anniversa-ries of our veterans. He moni-tored members who failed to renew on time and due to his personal intervention we man-aged to secure renewals on an unprecedented scale. Further, David served as a contributor to and proofreader of our newslet-ter, enhancing the publication with his insights. In addition, David served for several years as our chairperson for the region’s partnership with The Ventura Show, an annual fall event that attracts thousands of attendees from throughout the U.S. David man-aged and supervised more than 80 of our volunteer members during the three-day show, and he was our liaison with the show’s owners/managers.

Showcasing his invaluable service to the club was David’s involvement in our 2007 and 2008 Concours d’Elegance. When we saw that registrations in 2007 were below our expectations, David took charge. He personally called dozens of known concours competitors within our region and secured their entries and par-ticipation. The results were outstanding as more than 60 contestants jousted for trophies. The majestic setting overlook-ing the Pacific Ocean in Santa Barbara was punctuated with a sea of gleaming Porsches and their proud owners. Were it not for David, our event would not have been the success we enjoyed. He saved the event and propped up the re-gion’s reputation.

The story underlying the facts is much more revealing. If our region can claim to have a “rock of Gibraltar” among its

in the past decade. It must also be noted that his editorial input and assistance on our news-letter Der Auspuff played a major role in our publication receiving The Heinmiller Award for 2001, 2002 and 2003, and first in class for 2004.

David does not avoid backbreaking assign-ments. For example, in addition to his for-mal duties and responsibilities as Member-ship Chair, David religiously attends our two monthly breakfast meetings – not necessarily to socialize, but to manage and direct the traf-fic and parking of over 80 - 90 Porsches and up to 150 attendees! Every month! He greets our new and prospective members, and makes certain that the latter join ASAP.

Yet another display of his ability and willing-ness to undertake major tasks is his coordi-nation of our biennial New Members Picnic – tasks ranging from site selection to food preparation for 150 individuals. Furthermore, Dave has been key in the management of our nationally recognized Charity Runs to the an-nual parades, and has assisted international authors in their search for various Porsche models to photograph for their publications. He also handles numerous telephone inqui-ries from prospective members and others who are interested in our region and provides timely and motivating responses that further enhance our reputation as an active and suc-cessful region.

These physical and visible achievements are not the most important to our region, howev-er. Of most value to the membership is David’s demeanor, a strength of character that quietly seduces all to embrace his professionalism and confidence. Never spoken of, and never public-ly declared, David is the one person to whom each of us turns whenever we seek guidance, assistance, dispute resolution – and most af-fectionately – succor. He is our ombudsman, our negotiator, our mediator, and our confi-dant. Indeed, he is the mortar that holds the bricks together. Within SBR, presidents have come and gone, chairpersons have changed, appointees have moved on, but it is David that has served as the force of continuity in the most pacific and productive persona.

In assessing the merits of this award, one cannot look at one year of a man’s life. David deserves the honor of being named Enthusi-ast of the Year for his many years of uninter-rupted and dignified service to our region, and extreme credit must be given to his unique standing within our ranks. = Photos by Nicolas Liakas

By Dean Pellegrino

What is an alignment? How does it affect handling and tire wear? When should I do an

alignment? What causes alignment to go out? How would I know if my align-ment is out?

An alignment is nothing more than setting the angle of the hub/wheel so it tracks in the right direction. Porsches, and most vehicles, have four-wheel alignments, meaning each of the four wheels is separately aligned.

Your basic alignment consists of three angles: camber, caster, and toe-in.

Camber is the tilt of the tire when viewed from the front of the car. Posi-tive camber means the top of the tire is tilted away from the car. Negative camber means the top is tilted in. Cam-ber has a lot to do with cornering per-formance. Too much negative camber will wear the inside of the tires prematurely. Too much positive camber will wear the outside tread.

Caster is the inclina-tion of the front spin-dle. Picture the angle of the forks on a bike top to bottom. When the caster is out, it creates a pull or wan-

dering condition and sometimes a slow responding steering wheel.

Toe-in is measured in inches or de-grees. Viewing from the front of the car, it is the difference between the front and rear center-line of the tire. Toe-in means the fronts of the tires are closer together. Toe-out means, the fronts of the tires are far-ther apart. Toe-in or out has the most effect on tire wear.

When your car is out of align-ment, the tires will wear prema-turely. In some extreme cases, new tires will be gone within 500 miles. At the price of tires, especially high p e r f o r m a n c e tires with soft compounds, you want to keep your Porsche in alignment as long as possible.

Other symptoms of an out-of-align-ment car are poor handling, pulling to one side, or wandering from side-to-side. An alignment will also affect the steering wheel response and how quick-ly it returns to the center.

Your vehicle’s alignment should be checked every 10,000 to 12,000 miles. Any harsh impact such as pot holes, curbs, objects in the road, or the dam-age of an accident, should prompt you to have your alignment checked. If you

do any modifi-cations to your s u s p e n s i o n , raising or low-ering your car, that will affect the alignment angles. Even changing the tire size will af-fect the align-ment. Loose, worn or bent s u s p e n s i o n

parts such as ball joints, springs, bush-ings, and control arms will have an ad-verse affect on your alignment, too.

In most cases you do not know if your alignment is out. The best way to check it is with a precision alignment machine. Laser optics combined with a computer allow for the most accuracy in alignment readings. Remember you are aligning the hub of your Porsche. Check to see if the alignment shop or dealer has equip-ment that attaches to the hub, not the wheel. Many independent shops that

do alignments have a specialty tool called “Tru Align” that attach-es to the hub. This will make for a much more accurate alignment with the added bonus of not damaging the delicate finish on your wheels.

There is a lot more to suspension alignment, especially if you push your Porsche on the track. The modifica-tions you make on your suspension are just the

beginning. Once you start down this road you will be concerned with things like bump steer, weighting(vertical load), preloading, tire traction versus tire load, and more. Now you’re thinking under-steer, over-steer, tire compound, sway bar design, and other topics which we can cover in a later article.

For now, just remember to have your Porsche aligned every 10,000 to 12,000 miles in normal driving conditions. If you accidently hit a curb, or drive through a nasty pot hole or other road obstruc-tion, that would be a cue to have your car’s alignment checked more often.

Proper alignment is good for your car. It will save unnecessary wear on your tires. It will ensure that your Porsche is giving you the handling the factory designed the car to have. And, most importantly, a properly aligned car is safer and more fun to drive. =

While talking with some of our PCA members during the regional

Holiday parties, it occurred to Kathleen Lennon and me that some of you really didn’t have a good idea of what register-ing for the Porsche Parade is all about. We thought we should take a moment to explain just how the process goes. Here are some of the basics for you to think about:

When you register for Parade 2009 online, you must first have access to the PCA National website. Some of you may already have access to www.pca.org and have a password set up for its access. For those of you who do not, please contact Vu Nguyen, PCA Execu-tive Director, at [email protected]. He will as-sist you in gaining access to the National site, where you will be registering for our 2009 Porsche Parade.

Have a copy of the 2009 Porsche Pa-rade’s full schedule of events at hand. It will help you when you are in the registration process. You can find the full Parade schedule at www.porscheparade2009.com. It will list the four major competitive events, spe-cial activities, and banquets, plus all their dates and times for your convenient se-lection. The Parade registration process will take you approximately 30 minutes on line.

The 54th Porsche Parade registration fee is $165.00, and covers basic admit-tance to the Parade for the entrant, a co-entrant, and one car. The co-entrant may be an unaffiliated PCA member, but must share the same car with an en-trant. An exception applies if the regis-tered Porsche is not legal for street use, in which case a second Porsche may be registered for use in the TSD Rally only.

Beginning with the 54th Parade, we have lowered the registration fee, but will be charging entrants additional fees for the four major competitive events, if they choose to enter any or all:

Concours - $20 per car; Autocross - $20 per driver; TSD Rally - $10 per car; and Tech Quiz - $10 per person.

Additional fees apply for banquet/meal tickets and for selected other ac-tivities such as the spectacular driving tours, golf tournament, 5K walk/run and some Parade kids’ activities.

There are three ways to register for the Colorado Parade and all its activi-ties:

• The fastest, easiest way to register is online at www.pca.org.

• Before you can do that, you must be a registered user on the PCA website, as previously stated. If you aren’t already registered, please do that now so you are ready to go at Registration time. If

you are already registered, please make sure your information is up-to-date.

• If you are not comfortable using the online method of registering, please go to the Colorado Parade site directly at www.porscheparade2009.com to download the registration form. Fill it in and mail it on or after March 3, 2009.

• If you do not have internet access, call Kathleen Lennon, Parade Registrar, at (719) 487-2842 or (719) 330-1525 and request that a paper registration form be mailed to you. Requests for paper registration forms will be accepted be-ginning February 14th.

• Mailed registrations and online reg-istrations will be treated alike. There is no advantage to registering either way, beyond your own convenience.

As in the past, there is no early reg-

istration. The online registration site will be available starting Tuesday, March 3rd. All online registrations submitted on March 3rd, 4th, or 5th will be treated equally as first-day registration and pa-per registrations postmarked the same days.

Paper entries received with an earlier postmark will be rejected. There is no rush to register on a single first day as in past Parades. You may also register later but your options may be somewhat lim-ited.

As you can see, Parade registration has its rules, as do many regional events we all register for.

If you are still confused or simply wor-ried you won’t do it right, please feel free to call Kathleen Lennon. She will hold your hand through the process prior to our actual registration dates.

Kathleen and I hope these hints and things to think about will help you with your registration for the 2009 Parade. Once you are registered, you will receive

a confirmation of registration from the registrar and the Parade code to help you with your selection of Keystone Pa-rade lodging.

Whether you choose a hotel or a condominium, you will need this Parade access code to obtain the Parade rates. Check our regional Parade website for a lodging map of the Keystone area: www.porscheparade2009.com.

Walt and I will also be available to answer any Parade questions you may have. Our e-mail is [email protected] or call (303) 499-6540.

Welcome to the registration process for the 2009 Porsche Parade. =

...the last word

SURF’S UPMost of us are accustomed to seeing Der Auspuff’s Advertising Director Bill Sampson in his trademark shorts and flip-flops. So, those of us attending the New Year’s Morning “Hangover Run” in Malibu expected to see Bill attired as above. What none of us was prepared for, however, was the unique sight of a longboard bagged, racked, and strapped to the top of Bill & Rosemary’s classic 356-C Coupe. “Totally gnarly, dude!” But, you’d better have both hands on the steering wheel for those cross-winds!
