PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Often parents ask the question, ―How did the teacher determine my child‘s grade?‖ This is an important and complex

question. It is important to understand the goals of assessment and evaluation.

Assessment is the process of gathering information that accurately reflects how well a student is achieving the curriculum

expectations in various subjects. The primary purpose of assessment is to improve student learning. As part of the

assessment for learning, teachers provide students with descriptive feedback and coaching for improvement. They en-

gage students in the assessment process by helping students set goals, monitor their own progress, determine next steps

and reflect on their learning. Assessment is obtained in a variety of means which may include formal and informal

observations, learning conversations, questioning, conferences, homework, tasks done in groups, projects, portfolios,

performances, essays and tests.

Your child‘s report card is coming home on February 10th. We hope you will take the time to review the comments pro-

vided by the teachers. They have taken the time to provide some meaningful next steps as part of the assessment process.

We hope you find them helpful. Please do take the time to make parental comments on the report card indicating how

you can support your child‘s growth in partnership with the school.

Student achievement happens when we work collaboratively between the home and school. We are so fortunate for the

ongoing support we receive from so many of our families. Thank you for all that you do to support your child(ren)‘s

learning.

Reporting process for February report card (grades 1 to 8) Peel board supports student success with ongoing communication throughout the year

Continuing this year, there will be no school-wide parent/teacher interview day scheduled for the February reporting

period—report cards will be sent home Feb.10, 2012.

By this point in the school year, we have found that most parents are well aware of their child's progress based on

the ongoing communication from the school. You will receive a letter with the February report card that indicates if

your child is meeting expectations. Should your child‘s progress be of concern, the teacher will contact you to dis-

cuss ways to work together to further support his/her learning needs by March 1, 2012.

Our teachers are committed to providing parents with the information they need to support their child‘s success and

will continue to communicate with parents throughout the school year. There is a progress report card and two

report cards each year and they provide an overview of your child's progress over a period of time. The best way

to see how your child is progressing in school is through the ongoing communication you receive. Some of the

ways you may keep up-to-date about your child's progress include the following:

talk to your child about school

review your child's homework and agenda

receive copies of marks your child has received on assignments and tests

ongoing communication with your child's teacher.

If you have questions, please contact your child's principal.

It's time to register children born in 2008 for kindergarten Register at Corsair P.S. (Readiness Center) on Feb. 6, 8, 9 & 10

Starting school is a big step. Begin this journey into learning with us—register your child for kindergarten. If your child

was born in 2008, he or she can start kindergarten in September 2012.

Registration will be held at our school from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Feb. 6, 8, 9 & 10 and 5 to 8 p.m. on Feb. 9.

What you will need to bring to registration:

proof of child's age – birth certificate or passport

proof of address –

a copy of an offer to purchase or formal lease agreement or a bank statement or utility bill with your name and

address (Note: if using a lease agreement, it must be accompanied by a second form of proof of address)

proof of custody – children must live with their parent(s) unless provided documentation supports an alternate living

arrangement

proof of immunization – proof that your child has been immunized, according to the recommended immunization

schedule in Ontario, to protect against the following: Diphtheria, mumps, polio, red measles, rubella (German

measles) and tetanus

Important information about immunization

In order to attend school in Ontario, your child must have an up-to-date immunization record. When you register

your child for school, you will provide copy of your child's immunization record and the school will send it to Peel

Health. After registration, keeping your child's records up to date is your responsibility. Peel Health reviews immuni-

zation records regularly. Students who are not completely immunized and do not have a valid exemption may not be

allowed to attend school.

ATTENTION CORSAIR FAMILIES

Corsair will be participating in a fundraising effort to support the Stephen Lewis Foundation S.O.A.R. (―Students Helping Orphans In Af-

rica with Relief‖ ) Campaign to raise money for those orphan children in Africa that have been affected by the AIDS pandemic. Over 28

million people, that is almost the population of Canada, have been touched by this disease and during this Valentine‘s Day season we would

like to ‗Send Our Love to Africa‖ and show we CARE. Students may wish to buy candy grams for fellow students which will be delivered

on Valentine‘s Day or purchase raffle tickets for St. Michael‘s Majors hockey items (signed official hockey jersey, signed official hockey

stick, official hockey puck, and pairs of tickets to St. Michael‘s Majors Hockey game). The cost for candy grams and raffle tickets is 75

cents each or 2 for one dollar. These will be sold during the week of February 6-10. Thank you for helping to show that Corsair cares!

How to have fun in winter without getting

REALLY

By: Vyju

By Abdul-Rehman Cool facts about animals

1. Did you now that sharks are pictured as killing machines. But we seem to

be the deadliest creatures in the sea! People kill sharks more than sharks kill

people.

2. Did you now that the flesh of greenland sharks is poisonous? This giant

shark may snatch caribou right from the waters edge.

3. Did you now that instead of running down their prey, a tiger can spring over

10 meters to make a kill.

4. Did you now that a female lion hunts for food while the male lion stays home

and eats.

INTERESTING SPACE FACTS! Galaxies change in appearance, size, and shape. Astronomers, however, fit them in to three

groups – spirals, ellipticals and irregulars. Spiral galaxies {right} are very easy to identify,

because of their sweeping galaxy arms. Ellipticals are a little harder to identify. They are a

circle-ish shape like a ball. Irregulars are very hard to identify. They are like nebulas. A neb-

ula is the remnant of a star that has died and then exploded. The difference is that a nebula

does not contain any solar systems. Have fun this holiday discovering different galaxies in

these winter holidays!

Soccer

Soccer is one of the most popular sports played by Chil-

dren and Adults. Even the Olympic Games list soccer as

one as their major activities. However, the inventor of soc-

cer is a bit of a mystery. We don't know exactly who in-

vented soccer, but the very first game of soccer was played

between Japan and China. If we look back in time in an-

cient China, there was a very similar game called “Cuju”.

A lot of people call soccer, football. In

the 2010 FIFA World Cup Spain won.

Spain, Brazil, Portugal, Argentina,

Germany and England are the world’s

best soccer teams.

Cupcakes

150 g butter, softened

150 g caster sugar

3 eggs, beaten

150 g self-raising flour,

sifted

1 tsp vanilla extract

For the frosting

200 g butter, at room tempera-

ture

250 g icing sugar

1 tsp vanilla extract

1 tbsp milk

To decorate:

silver balls, sugar stars

(hundreds or thousands)

Christmas cupcakes

Method 1. Preheat the oven to 180C/160C fan/ gas 4.

2. Cream together the butter and sugar until light, fluffy and pale.

3. Gradually mix in the beaten egg alternating with the flour to stop the mix from curdling. Finally, stir

through the vanilla extract and milk.

4. Place 12 paper cupcake cases into a muffin tin and divide the mixture between them.

5. Bake for 15-20 minutes until golden and springy to the touch. Remove from the oven and cool on a rack.

6. For the frosting: in a mixing bowl beat the butter with a spoon or spatular until smooth, then start to sift in

the icing sugar, stirring regularly. Add the vanilla extract and milk. The frosting should be light and creamy.

7. Mix your green food colouring into the icing to give an even green colour.

8. Once the cupcakes are totally cool, pipe the icing onto them starting from the outside of the cake and

working into the centre to create tall Christmas trees. Decorate with silver balls, stars or hundreds and thou-

sands then allow to set for at least 30 minutes so that the icing has a slightly crispy finish.
