There’s been some good flow in the Burnett River this past week or so, as with most rivers and creeks along the Queensland coast, this will liven up the bait fish and move the prawns, and already some nice catches of prawns have been had. Bait fish, due to the wet, are moving up the coast and following these schools are Spotted and School Mackerel, with the odd Spanish amongst them.

This time of the year you can catch Mackerel not too far off shore, best method I use is a two and half metre leader floated behind your boat with a balloon for a float and a pilchard on a ganged hook. Make sure your leader is wire otherwise you will lose a lot of them, I always pop a sinker on the line just above the wire trace to keep the bait down.

With all this rain about, only the dedicated anglers ventured out, those that did landed some nice fish, Kevin Charteris and his band of merry men scored some arm aching Red Emperors, other species taking the bait are Coral Trout Grassy Sweetlips plus a good mix of the usual species. Best baits, Pilchard, Mullet strips and Squid have also been producing some excellent results.

To the rivers now, don’t let the dirty water put you off, there’s been some great action in the Burnett, Baffle, Kolan and the Burrum. In the Burrum, Mangrove Jacks have really been on the bite mostly up around Sharkies. Live bait has been the go along with Switch blades in Sunset Gold and purple bruiser.

Over the flats some great results have been had with the Rapala X-Rap in the 4cm size, colour is your choice. I can tell you that green over red and any sort of gold colour have worked, pulling in good Flathead. Also plastics are doing the trick, mostly the curly tails in dark

brown with a gold fleck plus the Atomic Chicken with the forked tail.

Barra are showing up in all our creeks these are the result of last year’s flood, it’s estimated that over a million washed over the dam walls up north. Huge sized Threadfin are still about again live bait and large prawns have been the go. Before dawn and just before dusk is best, just sit in the middle of the river and wait.

Spots to fish in the Burnett - follow the dirty water down from Strathdees to the mouth on the drift also above the rail bridge, back of the Hospital, for Bream and Barra, over the river for Flathead and along and opposite Kirby’s Wall for Bream, Whiting and Flathead.

Drift the Elliot for Flathead and Bream, up around Sharkies for Mangrove Jack. At the Baffle - around and just inside the mouth for Flathead, Whiting and Bream and the Ferry crossing for Bream and Mangrove Jack. I got some nice sized Whiting at the mouth using Bushy’s Stiffy popper lure in orange, this is a fantastic little lure.

With all the dams full the Bass have been fantastic with big sizes reported at most dams. Fish around the weed beds, as this is where the bait is hiding. Blade lures and spinners have been the go. Barra have also improved in size, good results here with plastics 10 to 12cm your choice of colour.

Don’t forget to put a Crab pot in as there are crabs everywhere, mostly in deep water.

Here’s a recipe for Tempura Batter - 1 egg, 1 cup ice water, 1cup plain flour, mix in this order egg in a bowl add ice water and your cup of flour, don’t worry if the batter gets a bit lumpy it does not matter, you need Canola oil at 180 degrees dip your Whiting fillet into the batter mix, shake off excess and lower in the oil slowly. Only cook for just a couple if minutes or until golden crispy, “Yum”. The secret is that the mixture must be ice cold, add ice cubes if you have to.

My wife and I are keen fishermen and love the Wide Bay area full of parks, wild life, lakes and rivers. To us it is paradise and needs to stay that way.

We came here to settle after many visits while searching for our dream home. People here are down to earth, cheerful and friendly and still very Australian by nature.

I tinker in my shed on our couple of acres at Alloway. Do up chainsaws and small engine equipment. When locals get wind of my talents, they will get me to fix their equipment. I am a chainsaw trainer/assessor and tree faller. I also help a mate on his cane farm to keep me out of mischief. I am a down to earth, grass roots bloke, not a city slicker. Politicians have such a bad name. They have forgotten that they are meant to be serving the community and caring for our needs and this negative image is about to be changed by the Australian Party.

We have gorgeous grandchildren from 1 year old up to the age of 16.

I’ve never had time to get involved in politics before, except to cast my vote and complain about the outcomes and issues that get up my nose. The time is now. To get out of the armchair and give it a go and I encourage you all to do that. If you don’t like something then we should have the right to change it. We don’t know how powerful we are until we stand united. This is not about money or power; this is about saving Australia, starting with Queensland. We all want our rights back don’t we? So let’s work for it together.

We need safer roads, safer, standardised school crossing speeds and signage, better use of excess farm produce, fewer regulations imposed on property owners, freedom to use crown lands for recreational activities and more employment prospects for all ages. Each week we hear news reports about yet another clean-up effort due to a chemical spill, improperly lined landfills, agricultural run-offs and toxic materials which are rapidly leaching into our aquifers and contaminating our water supplies faster than regulatory agencies can find solutions.

Rain and melting snow carry pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers into our creeks, rivers and lakes. Nitrates from nitrogen containing fertilizers used for agriculture and home lawn care can contaminate a water supply.

Before water is distributed to the community, it is treated to ensure it is safe and pleasant to drink. Treatment is designed to remove sediments and contaminants and to kill potentially harmful microorganisms.

In order for our drinking water to be safe it has to be treated to:• control algae• remove turbidity and colour• remove microorganisms• remove algal metabolites and synthetic

pollutants• reduce organic matter• reduce the concentration of iron,

manganese and other elements• reduce pesticides and herbicides• control taste and odour• soften • buffer or modify the pH• disinfect• control corrosion in distribution systems.

This is done by adding chemicals to our water supply. This chemical cocktail includes:• Copper Sulphate• Aluminium Sulphate• Chlorine• Ammonia• Sodium Flouride• Acids or Alkali • and up to a 50 other chemicals

While the treatment of the water may make it safe to use, is it really healthy for us to be drinking such a chemical cocktail? The answer is NO!!!

For instance Chlorine has long been suspected of causing bladder and colon cancers, but new research shows that it may cause other problems. A Norwegian study in 2002 found that 5 glasses of chlorinated tap water per day increases the risk of miscarriage by 14%, and may increase the incidence of stillbirth and birth defects. Chlorine can trigger thyroid disease by reducing the uptake of iodine and can raise cholesterol levels. Consumption of elemental chlorine kills friendly intestinal bacteria, and decreases stomach acid, resulting in irritable bowel syndrome and gastritis. Showering in chlorine strips the moisture from hair and skin, and may trigger eczema.

That is just the effects of one of the chemicals added to our water supply; imagine what the others could do?

Polycrystalline v MonocrystalineHarnessing solar energy using the photovoltaic effect is not a new

idea, in fact the concept goes back over 50 years. Over the last little while some very clever scientists have come up with new and even more efficient methods of harvesting sunlight and turning it into electricity. Monocrystaline is the latest incantation and represents a quantum leap forward in technology.

Of recent times polycrystalline panels have started to re appear around Bundaberg re-igniting the debate, “Which is best for use on roofs in Bundaberg” . Let’s have a look at what information is available to eliminate any confusion.

Polycrystalline is the original form of photovoltaic panel and is the most inexpensive method of manufacture, however, Monocrystaline is a longer and more difficult method of cell construction, therefore often a little more expensive. Let’s have a look at both types of construction and work out which one gives you more bang for your buck. • Polycrystalline at a microscopic level is quite impure and as a result cannot absorb as much

sunlight. Module efficiencies of 13% is the maximum you can expect (if a salesman quotes efficiencies higher than this they are misleading you by quoting “cell efficiencies” which is a different matter).To offset this deficiency, manufacturers make the physical size of their panels larger. These panels have a poor temperature co-efficient which means the hotter they get the worse they perform and can degrade easily 25%. These panels are great in Europe where it’s cooler, however not the best choice for Bundy.

• Monocrystaline is virtually perfect at the microscopic level and absorbs the maximum amount of sunlight. Module efficiencies are constantly on the rise and up to 20% are possible and available. These panels were quite expensive in the past, however, due to modern manufacturing techniques, are now much the same price as Poly. This makes for a more compact and efficient use of roof space.

I guess the argument will rage on and we are able to supply whatever type of panel you wish, however, it boils down to this:• If you are totally budget conscious buy Poly.• If you want modern technology that will give you the best value in the long run, get yourself a mono.

January’s Dementia Café was full of useful information with two guest speakers followed by a train ride around the Bundaberg Botanic Gardens for everyone to enjoy.

Carol Chapman Community Liaison Officer with Alzheimer’s QLD was the first guest speaker. The focus of her talk was on strategies and changed behaviours to use in the home with dementia sufferers. Dementia “behaviour” is a result of the disease: not intended or deliberate; a symptom of the disease.

The second guest speaker was Marcia Fernhill, Marcia spoke to the attendees of her experience in building a house for a relative and carer. Marcia has worked closely with council on this project and she encouraged anyone who is looking at building granny flats onto their home to work with council to gain the best possible outcome.

February’s Café, on Wednesday, 8 February, 9.30am at Café 1928, will be addressing: Caring for Carers - Tips for supportive partners, with Jane Verity. Let’s not think of yourselves as carers but rather as “supportive partners”. This can put a whole new meaning to the role. No matter what we call it though it is still a very demanding role.

Why have a bucket list? If you don’t live your days by personal goals and plans, chances are you spend most of your time caught up in a flurry of day-to-day activities. Ever feel your days are passing by without any tangible output to speak of? What were your accomplishments in the past 3 months? What are your upcoming goals for the next 3 months? Look at the things you did and the things you’re planning to do next – Do they mean anything to you if you are to die today? Having a bucket list reminds you of what’s really important so you can act on them. The objective of creating a bucket list isn’t to instill some kind of a race against time or to create aversion towards death. I don’t see our existence to be limited to just our physical years on earth – I don’t see our existence to be limited to just our physical years on earth – our physical lifespan is but a short speck of our existence in the universe. The whole point of a bucket list is to maximize every moment of our existence and live our life to the fullest. It’s a reminder of all the things we want to achieve in our time here, so that instead of pandering our time in pointless activities, we are directing it fully toward what matters to us. If you don’t have a bucket list, I highly recommend you to create one. How much does it cost? Probably 30 minutes to an hour, or more if you get really caught up in the writing :). What do you gain? Significant clarity and focus on what you want from your life. It’s an invaluable exchange. If you have already written your bucket list before, take this opportunity to review it. See if there are new items you want to add-on. If so, add them in. Check if all the items listed are still relevant. If not, remove them.

Start writing down what comes to mind as you read these questions: What if you were to die tomorrow? What would you wish

you could do before you die? What have you always wanted to do but have not done

yet? What will you do if you have unlimited time, money and

resources? Any countries, places or locations you want to visit? What are your biggest goals and dreams? What do you want to see in person? What achievements do you want to have? What experiences do you want to have / feel? Are there any special moments you want to witness? What activities or skills do you want to learn or try out? What are the most important things you can ever do? What would you like to say/do together with other people?

People you love? Family? Friends? Are there any specific people you want to meet in

person? What do you want to achieve in the different areas:

Social, Love, Family, Career, Finance, Health (Your weight, Fitness level), Spiritual?

What do you need to do to lead a life of the greatest meaning?

Come up with as many items as you can. The items should be things you have not done yet. Don’t stop until you finish listing at least 101 things! If you find yourself stuck, chances are you are mentally limiting/constraining yourself. Release those shackles – This is a list of everything you want to achieve, do, see, feel and experience in your life. Airport Drive in Bundaberg will be closed to through traffic for approximately seven weeks due to road constructions works.

Council’s spokesperson for Roads and Drainage Infrastructure Councillor Wayne Honor said access to and from the Bundaberg Airport during this period will be from Commercial Street only.

“Appropriate signage will be displayed while the road is closed, including advance notification at Enterprise Street and Johanna Boulevard,” Cr Honor said.

“Air passengers travelling to and from the airport should take note of the closure of Airport Drive and the alternative route to ensure they reach the terminal in plenty of time,” Cr Honor added.

of course, weight loss and exercise. Why do we put on weight? There are many reasons, and you need to firstly rule out any underlying conditions including an thyroid issues. A thorough check up and blood tests are always important before starting any weight loss program. Particularly checking the TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) and Thyroid Anti bodies. It is also advisable to check Iron and B12; Vitamin D (low levels can be related to auto immune, weight gain, osteoporosis); blood glucose levels; cholesterol along with the normal routine blood count. Your blood pressure also needs to be checked. It is important to have this check-up to ensure that there is no underlying, untreated condition going on in your body or that going flat out on the treadmill is going to cause you to faint or end up in hospital.

Once you have had the okay from the GP it is time to get going. If there is no underlying conditions going on, and even if there is, other reasons for putting on weight include: eating the wrong foods; eating too much food; lack of exercise; menopause seems to be a particularly trying time for many women; changing to a gluten free diet (unusual but yes, does happen with too many rice based products); drinking too much alcohol; eating one meal a day (slows down the metabolism); increasing age and becoming more sedentary due to arthritis etc; never or rarely doing a thorough detox; and fluctuating blood sugar levels.

Many dietary pills and potions that are available over the internet are a waste of your money unless you can purchase them from a reputable Naturopath. You need to look at the research thoroughly and check with your Naturopath; GP or Pharmacist before using these products, particularly if you are on prescription medication. There are herbs and vitamins that will assist with weight loss

but you are best to purchase these from a qualified Naturopath who will be using items which have been made based on extensive clinical studies and research. These items will assist your health and weight loss program and will be prescribed based on your individual needs.

It is best not to think of going on a diet but to consider changing your ‘way of eating ‘permanently. It is time to empty your cupboards of processed food. It is okay to have a biscuit here and there, but do you really need the cakes, ice cream, McDonalds, KFC, white bread, iced coffee, choc milk, soft drink, potato chips, pies, sausage rolls etc. These items used to be considered an occasional treat where now they are part of many people’s daily intake.

So, 3 healthy meals a day – proteins, whole grains; vegetables with two snacks in between of nuts, seeds, fruit, yoghurt. Eating one meal a day is going to slow your metabolism down so eat more small meals but all healthy items.

The other most important part of weight loss is exercise. Some gyms may have half price membership this time of the year. Otherwise a personal trainer can work wonders in getting you motivated and setting up a program for you that you can easily continue with yourself and in your own home using your own body weight. Any exercise is better than none, and once you get started you will feel the endorphin release, your confidence will increase and you will feel more motivated to stay

with your new way of eating. Another point here is, you may say,

“But I am moving all day at work” or “I don’t stop between housework and the kids – that is my exercise” or “I am too busy to exercise”. Well, first of all, your body gets used to what you have been doing every day for a long time and it won’t necessarily burn off the calories anymore and we are all busy. Our lives now are non-stop. We need to find a way to fit exercise into our lives or we won’t live as long and we are more prone to many early onset diseases. Whether you have to get up half an hour earlier, turn the TV off or do a work out in front of the TV, no more excuses! You will be rewarded with feeling better about yourself, increased confidence, weight loss, glowing skin, a natural high from endorphins, increased energy, lower risk of heart disease, diabetes and many other diseases; and being the inspiration for your friends and family.

this kind of weather that plays havoc with your computer, this is why I say get your computer serviced ASAP before the rainy season sets in. Moisture in the air can cost you hundreds of dollars of unnecessary costs, computer fans drag in air to keep it cool along with dust. Firstly there are lots of ways to pick and choose music and photo’s etc to a preferred folder. Make your folder by right clicking on your desktop, scroll down to and click New, then click on folder. Next you will see the folder on your desktop ready for you to name so just type in, say 21st Birthday, next open up the folder with all your photo’s in, say about 80 pictures, next click and highlight a particular photo you want to transfer, now hold down the Ctrl key at the bottom left of your keyboard, whilst holding this key down, click on any photo you want to transfer and save to your new folder,

when you have selected all the photos you need, right click on just one of them and click copy, next go to your new folder, place your arrow on it and right click, go to paste and bingo all your chosen photos are now in your new folder

Slow Cooked Beef StroganoffIngredients:

Method: 1. Coat cubes of meat with sea salt and pepper. Place in the

bottom or your slower cooker. Sprinkle diced onions on top of the meat.

2. In a small bowl, mix together the garlic, balsamic vinegar, Dijon mustard and water. Gently pour over meat.

3. Cover and cook on low heat for 5 hours.4. After 5 hours, add corn flour a little at a time, stirring well each time.5. Add the coconut cream and stir until completely dissolved andd mixed

through. Add the white wine and sliced mushrooms. Stir again.6. Cover and let cook for another 1 to 1½ hours, until mushrooms are cooked and meat is cooked and tender.7. Serve with brown rice and a fresh salad or steamed vegetables.

Choc Orange CakeIngredients:

Method: 1. Boil oranges covered in water for 2 hours or until

soft. Once cooked leave to cool.2. Once cooled, cut in large pieces and blitz in a food processor

(skin & pith) until finely chopped.3. Combine eggs and caster sugar well into a lage mixing bowl. Add almond meal and cocoa alternately. Then

add bicarb, baking powder and oranges. Mix to form a thick batter.4. Pour batter into a lined 20cm spring loaded cake tin and bake at 180°C for 1 hour or until skewer comes out

clean. Leave to cool in the tin on a cake rack.5. Remove from tin and dust with a little cocoa or icing sugar.

1kg watermelon3 large mangoes200g strawberries

1. Cut watermelon into 1.5cm thick slices. Use a star cutter to cut shapes from the flesh. Cut strawberries in half, mangoes and kiwifruit into 1.5cm slices.

2. Thread the fruit onto bamboo skewers and place on a paper lined, non-stick baking tray. Cover with plastic wrap and freeze until solid.

The important issue of food safety and hygiene is the subject of a new online training course which is now available.

The I’m Alert Food Safety interactive online training course is equivalent in scope to a two day consultant delivered program and has been developed by qualified and experienced Environmental Health professionals.

Council’s Health and Environmental Services spokesperson Councillor Mary Wilkinson said all food businesses have obligations and Council is assisting them by providing free access to this exciting new training tool.

“The interactive, logical and easy learning format assists business owners and staff to develop the skills and knowledge required to ensure safe food for customers and to comply with obligations under the Food Safety Standards for Australia,” Cr Wilkinson said.

“The program is easy to follow, includes an entertaining presentation as well as quizzes and includes

subjects covering contamination of food, storage, processing, display, packaging and transportation,” she said.

“The hygiene and health of persons who handle food, cleanliness, cleaning and sanitising and animals and pests are other issues covered in the course,” she added.

Following the completion of the program a training acknowledgement form can be printed which forms part of required food safety records.

In addition to the online course Council will continue to provide free face to face food courses for people who are new to the food

industry.The course can be found at:

Queensland Government Sport and Recreation Services with full support from Bundaberg Regional Council are holding another fantastic event for all sports in Bundaberg – Super Sports Sign On Day.

The annual sign on day will be held at the Bundaberg PCYC, Maryborough Street on Sunday, 12 February, 10am to 1pm.The aim of the Super Sports Sign on Day is to increase club membership, raise the profile of community sport and promote sport in a positive manner to the general public and local businesses.

Last year’s Bundaberg event was the most successful in Queensland with 40 different clubs and associations involved and over 1,000 people attending.
