FCCLA Ignites the Flames of Leadership—Katelyn
McDonald, left, was chosen as an officer at the Region
III FCCLA Leadership Meeting. She ran for the posi-
tion during the House of Delegates on Friday afternoon
and was named as one of the 17 new officers for the
year 2011-12. She will serve as VP of Competitive
Events. She will begin training for this position in June
while attending a week-long leadership training with
all of the other region and state officers across the state.
Katelyn was installed as a new officer during the last
general session on Saturday. Dustin Lawson, above
left, and Jackson Dailey Placed 1st in Applied Tech-
nology STAR Event competition, advancing them to
state competition in April. For their contest, they made
a power point presentation explaining how they had
developed the chapter project Read Across the Bluff
using various types of technology. The title of their
project was “Reading to the Beat, the Techno Beat.” The project also required them to develop portfolios
about the project. See pages 7- 8 for more on the FCCLA region meet.

Sale With Goats
The Hopkins County Junior Market Show for
2011 started yesterday at the Civic Center. It
continues through Saturday and concludes with
the Sale of Champions at 3:00 PM. Tawny Cum-
mings took 2nd in her class with her goat and
made the sale. Dakota Emerson took 3rd in his
class and made the sale. Others’ rankings in-
clude Hudson Northcutt-7th, Kelsey Wolf-9th, Ashton Sharp-
5th, Karissa Wolf-6th, Cheyenne Bryant-7th, Cody Vance-
5th, Shelbi Hurley-6th, Ryan Vance-10th, Harrison-5th,
Trayton South-3rd, Ashton Sharp-7th, Ali Sharp-6th.Cody
and Ryan Vance showed poultry this morning. Clay Mitchell,
Joe Forshee, Isaac Foley, and Joe Granack show swine today.
This afternoon Trey Williams, Shelby Williams, and Colton
Emerson will be in the heifer show. Quincie Duncan will be
in the steer show. See more on pages 3-5.

Hopkins County Junior Market Show 2011—Above, Cheyenne Bry-
ant, Tawny Cummings, and Shelby Williams compete in the show as it
continues this weekend at the Civic Center. Cheyenne and Tawny
showed yesterday in the Lamb & Goat Show. Tawny made the sale with
her goat. Shelby shows today in the Heifer Show. At left, Karissa, a goat

Junior High Lady Bears Defeat North Hopkins 16-5
On February 17, the junior high Lady Bears had an exciting win over North Hopkins. Then their next game got rained out against
Saltillo. That game has since been rescheduled for later in March. It was such a resounding victory, they they have been eagerly
awaiting their next game day. That day is coming up on Monday, February 28, right here at Sulphur Bluff at 4:30 PM against Harts
Bluff. Team members are 6th graders Haley Halbert and Lydia Burleson; 7th graders Skylar Evans, Mardi Fite, Harlie Harred, Kel-
sey Wolf, Lexi Greer, Lacey Calhoun, Sierra Swanson, Tori Dorner; 8th graders Angie Alvarez, Judy Brown, Shelbi Hurley, and

1. Healthy Lifestyles Scholarship (Deadline: April 30, 2011)This
$5000 scholarship is open to students currently enrolled as high school
students or first-year college students. To be eligible for this award you
must be under 25 years of age and answer both of the essay questions.

FCCLA Ignites the Flames of Leadership—FCCLA’s Parliamentary Procedure Team,
above L-R Josh Cannon, Bruce Marrero, Halie Wade, Casey Gore, Sarah Williams,
Amanda Fowler, placed 2nd in the Region III FCCLA Leadership Meeting February 18-19
in Waco, Texas. Thirteen FCCLA members of the local chapter participated and were
among over 1,000 other members from chapters across the state. The parliamentary proce-
dure team now have the opportunity to compete at state. Theis event required the team to
conduct a meeting as well as take a written test. Ryan Watts and Kaci Powers, right, com-
peted in Illustrated Talk with a presentation about child abuse. The event required them to
research and develop a speech and display board to illustrate the speech. They competed
against 13 other teams but did not place as a state qualifier. Ester Marquez, lower right,
competed in the event, Recycle and Redesign. Ester’s project was all about recycling cloth-
ing, by using two t-shirts in a unique way to create a new look. Her conservation theme was
“eco be-Conserve the T.” She was required to give a presentation about her project using
the sample design and a display board she designed to display the information required. Her
marketing label for the design was “2T’s in a Pod.” Ester competed against 12 others but
did not place as a state qualifier. The chapter was recognized at the first general session
Friday night for completion of Projects this year. Ester Marquez also served as the chapter
voting delegate at the House of Delegates held on Friday. Members were motivated during
the Friday night session by Hollis Conway, a former Olympic gold medalist high jumper.
The meeting concluded on Saturday with the STAR Event award presented and the installa-
tion of new officers. Members qualifying for state competition will be participating April
14-16 in Houston. The FCCLA members would like to thank everyone who has helped
support the projects and fundraisers this year. Also a big thank you to Mrs. Joslin for driv-
ing the bus and all the help she gave and a big thank you to Mrs. McDonald who helped
sponsor. All of the FCCLA members also extend a big thank you to their sponsor, Mrs.
Vandiver.
