Featuring Two Nights aboard the Luxurious Rovos Rail
March 24–April 5, 2014
GRAND SOUTH AFRICA FEATURING TWO NIGHTS ABOARD THE LUXURIOUS ROVOS RAILMarch 24–April 5, 2014 (12 nights/13 days)
TRAVEL TO SOUTH AFRICA to experience the diverse threads of
South Africa’s history, an animal
kingdom of enormous abundance
and diversity, the birthplace of
mankind’s earliest ancestors, the
meeting place of two great oceans,
and the juxtaposition of
transplanted European values and
indigenous tribal norms.
Discover the rich history of South Africa’s
oldest city, Cape Town; marvel at the
beauty of the Cape Peninsula; and explore
the justly acclaimed Stellenbosch wine
region. Then board the luxurious Rovos
Rail for a two-day journey across South
Africa’s sweeping landscapes, enjoying all
the comforts of the golden age of train
travel: unsurpassed service, elegant
traditional furnishings and period décor,
panoramic views of spectacular
landscapes, and fi ne dining.
Visit Kimberley, site of the fi rst diamond
discoveries in South Africa; Pretoria,
South Africa’s administrative capital;
and the country’s economic engine,
Johannesburg, where the struggles of
apartheid played out so dramatically.
End your adventure at Kapama Southern
Camp for a magnifi cent safari experience.
You may also extend your trip, if you wish,
and fl y to Zimbabwe to see the
thundering wonder of Victoria Falls.
During game drives at Kamapa Private Game Reserve, be on the lookout for an alert family of juvenile lions (cover) and try to spot the subtle differences in stripe patterns that distinguish one zebra from another.

HAA STUDY LEADER
As this brochure goes to print, we have not yet confi rmed the
faculty study leader for this program. We intend, however, that
you will be joined by a Harvard lecturer who will enhance your
travel experience. You will discover that our lecturers are not
only fi rst-rate scholars and teachers but also friendly traveling
companions, eager to share their insight through conversation
as well as in scheduled presentations.
OTHER FEATURED LECTURER
David Welsh, a Capetonian by birth, has lived all
his life in South Africa. He studied at the
Universities of Cape Town and Oxford and was
Professor of Southern African Studies at the
University of Cape Town from 1963 until 1997, at which time he
became a full-time writer. His major interest, both as a scholar
and a human rights activist, is the system of apartheid and how it
ended. His most recent book, The Rise and Fall of Apartheid
(2010), explores the issues and events that led to South Africa’s
fast and relatively peaceful transformation from apartheid to
democracy. David, an experienced lecturer on Rovos Rail
programs, will lead in-depth discussions about South Africa’s
complicated political history. His wife, social anthropologist
Virginia van der Vliet, will also be on hand to add to the
discussion; the author of The Politics of AIDS (1996), she is a
noted expert in HIV transmission and containment.
Enjoy the thrill of seeing wild animals in their native habitat from open-air safari vehicles on guided game drives.
