Your essential sales digest in one compact package

E UROPE’S two big summer yearling sales in Deauville and Doncaster each have their own unique

character and take place in very different locations.

Where they don’t vary is they both boast an impressive roster of winning graduates.

Dewhurst Stakes hero Belardo and UAE Derby winner Mubtaahij were bought at the Arqana August Yearling Sale, while the DBS Premier Yearling Sales has lived up to its reputation as a fine source of fast, precocious performers with plenty of class as Illuminate, Kachy and Tiggy Wiggy demonstrate.

Arqana this year takes place with the frisson of the first Frankel yearlings to come under the hammer, the debut European yearlings by Australian megastar sire Redoute’s Choice and a sister to dual Arc heroine Treve on offer.

Expect a strong international buying bench in Deauville to take advantage of the weak euro.

Pedigrees are not the focal point at Doncaster, but you can bet the catalogue, full of sharply bred sorts, is chock-full of individuals with powerful physiques.

Bonne chance and/or good luck spotting the next Belardo or Tiggy Wiggy.Marti Steve s

Excitement in the dual world champion’s debut crop will be immense, with six lots up for grabs including a half-sister to Listed

Gainsborough Stud for the Indian Ridge filly Vimy Ridge – can be broken and it is easy to see why with several beautifully bred individuals. The pick of the bunch is a sister to dual Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner Treve ( ) who looks sure to spark fireworks when she enters the ring late on Sunday night.

Trade was strong at last year’s auction, with three six-figure lots – headed by a €1.2m Monsun filly knocked down to Tony Nerses – contributing to sweeping gains across the board.

Top-notch graduates from the sale include last year’s Dewhurst Stakes scorer Belardo, Irish Oaks heroine Chicquita and outstanding miler Toronado.

First yearlings by superstar Frankel sure to be the centre of attentionTHE sales auditorium at Arqana will be packed to the rafters on Saturday evening and there will be a great sense of anticipation when enters the ring, the first yearling by the mighty Frankel to come under the hammer anywhere in the world.

In total, six yearlings by the unbeaten ten-time Group 1 winner will grace the ring at Arqana where interest will be at

an all-time high, such is the allure of the great horse.

It is no surprise the sextet are bred in the purple, in particular a filly bred and consigned by Ecurie des Monceaux who is a half-sister to the Listed-winning Dansili mare Prudenzia, dam of Irish Oaks heroine Chicquita ( ).

“The Frankel yearling is a strong filly

with good depth and a lot of power,” says the stud’s manager Henri Bozo. “She has a great walk and a lot of strength behind, like all the yearlings by Frankel I’ve seen. She’s from a really strong pedigree that improves every year.”

The sales company has set up a bespoke website, frankel.arqana.com, to showcase the yearlings.

AN INCREASINGLY familiar face at Haras de la Reboursière et de Montaigu is Sybille Gibson, daughter of stud owners – and doyens of the Normandy breeding scene – Gilles and Aliette Forien.

Having spent ten years in Chantilly, Gibson has returned home to learn the ropes of stud management in preparation for eventually taking over when her parents retire.

“I’ve been working at the stud since September,

learning,” says Gibson. “Mother isn’t ready to stop yet but she’s gradually releasing some of the responsibilities. I’m still getting acquainted with all the horses and learning the pedigrees and I’ve got to know the yearlings very well.”

Reboursière has 14 yearlings catalogued to sell at the Arqana August Yearling Sale, including two daughters of Sea The Stars – one out of Group 3-placed Dance

Secretary ( ), whose Galileo three-parts sister sold for €1 million there last year, and the other out of Group 3 Prix Pénélope winner Don’t Hurry Me ( ).

Other highlights of the draft include a Pour Moi colt out of Classic-placed Ysoldina ( ), a daughter of great Reboursière mare Rotina, and a Rock Of Gibraltar brother to Group 1 Critérium de Saint-Cloud winner Prince Gibraltar ( ).

Precocity the word as plenty of lots take eye in V2 sale

Leading vendors Monceaux happy with this year’s draftLUCIEN ORANO’S Ecurie des Monceaux sold three of the top four lots last year, including the €1.2 million sale-topping Monsun filly, who went the way of Tony Nerses.

The operation is managed by Henri Bozo, who is delighted with this year’s consignment, the seventh draft offered by Monceaux at the August sale.

“We’re very happy with our 2015 draft,” he says. “We’re fortunate to present a pair of colts by Dubawi, four yearlings by the great Frankel, six by Invincible Spirit and a filly by Galileo. They’re a strong group of individuals with pedigree, who were all raised at the farm.

“The operation is still

relatively young, but our homebreds are winning at the top level, which is fantastic. We’ve produced 12 Group winners, including four Group 1s, in the last three years. Let’s hope it continues.”

Katie’s Diamond (3) wins the Listed Empress Stakes. Her Intense Focus half-sister sells as lot 377 in the V2 sale

Henri Bozo: “We’re very happy with our draft”

THE husband and wife team of Etienne and Anna Drion have been operating under their Coulonces Consignment banner for only five years but they have already established themselves as leading vendors.

In 2013 they supplied the star lot at the Arqana August Yearling Sale, the top-priced €1.5 million Dubawi filly who was snapped up by James Harron, and last year they sold 28 lots for an average of €159,714, headed by a

€500,000 daughter of Dubawi.

They arrive at Arqana this year with a 29-strong draft brimming with blue-blooded yearlings, including an Excelebration colt (lot 26) who is a half-brother to Hugo Palmer’s Minstrel Stakes winner Home Of The Brave, a Teofilo filly (8) who is a sister to Gordon Stakes runner-up Scottish, and a Galileo colt (171) out of Listed-winning Oasis Dream mare Thai Haku.

QUESNAYQUALITYHEADS UP

Deauville Thursday, August 13, 2015 racingpost.com6

F OUR years ago Alec Head turned to his daughter Criquette and uttered the fateful words: “She’s

beautiful, don’t let her go.”He was referring to the

Motivator yearling filly out of Haras du Quesnay’s Anabaa mare Trevise, a horse the whole racing world would come to know as Treve.

Two Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphes later Treve no longer carries the family’s scarlet silks but, having sent Trevise back to Le Quesnay-based Motivator, the Heads are now offering all those agents who

bowed out when the bidding reached just €22,000 a second chance, as Treve’s sister passes through the same ring on Sunday evening.

The word unique is overused but, 13 lots from the end of business on day two, the Arqana sales arena will be well and truly packed when

17 makes her entrance.“This is a treasure we’re

bringing to the market here,” says Vincent Rimaud, director of Le Quesnay. “The sister to a dual Arc-winning mare who is attempting to win it for a third time – for people to discover her for themselves at the sales is exciting. It’s a bit like when Apple reveal their newest product.”

It is unlikely any tech company campus can rival the old-world charms of Le Quesnay, which rolls over 300 hectares of prime Normandy breeding land little more than ten minutes up several winding roads from Deauville itself.

The yearling preparation is conducted in a new unit across the road from the house on

what used to be the site of a satellite training yard under the care of Alec Head and later Dominique Boulard.

No little time and money has been spent on facilities such as a lunging ring and a covered manège with walker, while the barns and boxes have all been refitted.

Along with plenty of paddock space, the chief attribute inherited from its previous incarnation is a seven-furlong all-weather

gallop, all of which offer plenty of options when it comes to hand-walking the yearlings.

With Treve bound for Al Shaqab’s Haras de Bouquetot once the final chapter of her glorious racing career has been completed, you might be forgiven for expecting her sister’s value as a broodmare at Le Quesnay would have overridden any chance she would be offered at public auction.

Rimaud says:

“She’s obviously very valuable in breeding terms and Treve herself has been sold. But the Haras du Quesnay is a big business. There is a lot of work that goes on here, we have a lot of employees and there are works to maintain and improve the grounds.

“We sell horses to keep the business in good shape. It’s the Heads’ family business and, unlike some big owners who can inject their own money to help things along, our only sources of revenue are the boarding of horses for our clients, the sale of yearlings and standing the stallions.

“When we have a yearling we think could fetch a high price at market, we have to consider that. Trevise is only 15 years old and we have two sisters [Mr Sidney four-year-old

rophee, who is with Christophe Clement in the US, as well as three-year-old Toride, by Fuisse, who is

nearing her debut for Criquette Head-Maarek].

“The bloodline isn’t going to be lost to Le Quesnay

while Motivator stands here as we can remake the same cross if we want. If the mare was older and we had no daughters it would be different.”

H E ADDS: “Our yearlings and the ones of our clients are nearly all offered for sale

and the auction companies come to inspect and make their choice.

“Every year we choose to keep two or three for breeding purposes, perhaps because the mare is ageing or to keep the bloodline alive.

“This year I believe there are four who aren’t being offered for sale. But aside from that we’re sellers and we sell as many as we can.”

All at Le Quesnay are keen to preserve a sense of wonder around this filly, hoping to exploit her rarity value even as her big sister prepares for her ultimate test in the full glare of the public spotlight.

And if you haven’t seen the yearling’s photo splashed all

over social media, don’t mistake that for a lack of confidence in the horse.

Rimaud becomes genuinely animated when describing the filly standing in front of us. “She’s the full-sister to a champion racehorse from an attractive family. Treve’s fifth dam is shared with Moonlight Cloud, so in breeding terms it’s a great page.

“What Treve is doing on the racecourse and the sale of this filly are both unprecedented. Treve is doing her part, having won very well on both her starts this year.

“This one has the family but she also has the looks – you don’t always get both – so I think she’s quite exceptional. She has a lot of quality and she looks very similar to Treve.

“She’s not small but nor is she big. She has enough bone and she’s correct. You want to see something nice, something that will please you. And with her you do.”vvVincent Rimaud discusses some other members of Quesnay’s draft, page 8

NATHANIEL is a very interesting stallion in whom we have a share. This year we’re offering two by him, a colt who will be in the October sale and the filly out of Grenade (lot 67) from an interesting family.

The dam is a sister to Glorosia, who won the Group 1 Fillies’ Mile at Ascot. There’s a lot of black type on the page and they produce well. She’s a very good-looking filly and a good example of Nathaniel.

Today we raise more horses on behalf of our clients than for ourselves and it’s a part of the business that has taken on an added dimension in recent years.

We’ve housed the mares of Monsieur Leonidas Marinopoulos (bred under the

corporate name Stilvi Compania) for three years and there have been good results with the produce born and raised here. Aktoria recorded a great success here in Deauville only this month in the Listed Prix Six Perfections.

Monsieur Marinopoulos has a really nice filly out of Aktia (lot 199) by Canford Cliffs, who has made a stunning start as a stallion. She’s beautiful and will go through the ring on Monday.

The So You Think is a very nice filly (out of Nymfia, 118) and is really stamped by her sire. We’re also selling Monsieur Leonidas’s Galileo half-brother to Topaze Blanche, who was runner-up in the Prix Marcel Boussac three years ago and was the first produce of Pearl Earrine, a young broodmare with a good future (122).

Lot 356 is by Rip Van Winkle and is the first foal out of Syrna, a half-sister to Skia and Tropaios. Skia was a good racehorse who was sold to Shadai last December when in foal to Leroidesanimaux.

Syrna is by Kendor, a fine sire of broodmares. The yearling is a lovely filly and the exciting thing about her is Skia’s first produce, who is in training with Carlos Laffon-Parias, made a really encouraging debut at Maisons-Laffitte. The family has already produced good runners.

Finally for Stilvi Compania there’s the Siyouni colt out of Polyegos (321), who hails from one of their best families, that of Lockinge Stakes winner Keltos.

The Redoute’s Choice out of Katyusha (82) is for another client the Haras du Quesnay has worked with for a number of years, Victor Timoshenko. We sold this filly’s half-brother, Migwar, who is highly thought of by Freddy Head, in 2013. He had a small hold-up but is close to making his comeback. He has shown himself very good in his two wins and it’s a good family, so we’re hopeful she’ll sell well.

The mare’s first filly, Miasnar, was by Montjeu but got injured and couldn’t run. She has a colt foal by Siyouni

and is in foal to Le Havre. Then there was Migwar, followed by a Sea The Stars filly who had problems as a foal and wasn’t sold and who was kept by the owner for breeding, and now there’s this one. It’s a pedigree with a big future. She should make a good racehorse but for a breeder it’s an interesting family to buy into as well.

We have a partnership with Haras de Manneville and everything we sell is bred and raised either here or with them. So we know all the horses by heart, and in a lot of cases their families going back because we’ve worked together for a long time.

Lady Elgar is an older mare but she’s been an excellent producer, having had a Grade 1 winner and three other black-type offspring. This is a really attractive colt by Manduro (281). Lady Elgar has tended to produce better colts than fillies, so he’s an interesting addition to the catalogue.

Another from that partnership is a filly by

Zamindar out of Symba’s Dream (355), who was Listed-placed and whose second foal, Jufoon, was sold for €200,000 here in August 2012 and finished runner-up in the Listed Prix Petite Etolie at Deauville last December.

As well as Treve’s sister we have three more yearlings by Motivator in part one. Manneville has a nice filly out of Gypsy Hollow (257), a half-sister to two black-type performers. She’s very feminine and has a head that really reminds you of her sire.

Lot 228 is a colt out of Dissertation, a proven producer. His brother Durer was second in the Prix Noailles and the colt is very well advanced in his development, has a very good physique and moves very well.

Lot 322 is a filly out of Pomonia – whose brother Anaconda was placed in the Lingfield Derby Trial – and so is from the same Anabaa cross as Treve. She moves well and is strong down the shoulder and has a good motor behind.

Quesnay director Vincent Rimaud takes Scott Burton through some other members of the stud’s consignment to the August Yearling Sale

‘ he should ma e a racehorse but for a breeder it’s an interesting family to buy into as ell’

A NEW look will greet visitors to the legendary Hôtel Barrière Le Royal on the seafront at Deauville this August.

The glamorous hotel – more than a century old and the tallest building in town – has been refreshed as part of a renovation programme for the Barrière Group.

Last November the hotel closed its doors for a five-month winter break to renovate the rooms and seminar spaces.

Architect and designer Nathalie Ryan was inspired by the building’s history and focused her makeover on three themes – nature, sea and beach.

Ryan began her collaboration with Barrière Group in 2010 when she created the Suite Dior in the Hotel Barrière Le Majestic in Cannes – 400 square metres of elegance using opulent materials. The same ethos has been applied to the redecoration of the Royal

– to respect and preserve the building’s historic soul, but adding modern styles.

Guests can expect to see renovations inspired by the blonde of the Deauville sand and blue of the sea, and also garnet and orange from the warm hues of the building. There are also angel-hair tapestries and carpets that reflect waves of sand.

Deauville’s famous film festival is honoured by printed portraits on vintage canvas and theatrical canopies around the beds.

In the first tranche of renovation, 102 rooms have been redesigned by Ryan, and all the seminar rooms have been modernised with the latest technology available.

The facelift gives the hotel a 21st-century look but stays true to its intrinsic value of architectural excellence, a hallmark of the Barrière group.

Renovation adds modern styles but historic elegance and glamour remain key

W HEN it comes to dining out in Deauville and its twin resort of

Trouville, there are nearly as many opinions on the subject of la bonne adresse as there are on the best yearling or the hottest sire.

Racing and breeding professionals all have their favourites, with budgets that range in affordability from having won a few euros on this year’s Prix Morny to having sold a potential winner of next year’s edition.

Some are swayed by institutions that have served happy racing crowds for many years, the incontournables like Chez Hervé and Le Drakkar. But our panel of gastronomic enthusiasts have also turned up some hidden gems as well as a couple of new establishments that could yet join the elite list of places to visit for years to come.S ott B rto

Marc-Antoine BerghgrachtMAB AgencyLes Ammonites is very good for fish and then, of course, there’s always Le Drakkar.

Pierre BoulardPB BloodstockIt’s not very original but, in terms of the ingredients, I love Chez Hervé. But there’s also a great little crêperie in Trouville, which has only 15 tables and is tucked away on a little pedestrian street. It’s called Pierre et le Loup.

Ross DoyleBloodstock agentWe love La Flambée, Le 21 and

Les Quatre Chats. They’re all great fun, the food is great and a little bit of wine helps it along its way.

Stephen HillenBloodstock agentSanta Lucia, a pizza restaurant, is good when you just want something simple in the evening.

Also look out for the 12 strong Rathbarry Stud consignment at Doncaster

THOSE buyers on the lookout for ready-to-run, precocious stock would be wise to consider a trip to the DBS Premier Yearling Sales, which has become a renowned source of two-year-old talent.

Unbeaten filly Illuminate, who landed the Group 2 Duchess of Cambridge Stakes last month, was picked up by Peter and Ross Doyle for £95,000 in 2014, while Molecomb Stakes winner Kachy, who has also yet to taste defeat, was knocked down to SackvilleDonald for £52,000.

However, graduates have proved to be more than just two-year-olds. Toormore, a £36,000 purchase who was crowned champion European juvenile in 2013, is still going strong, as demonstrated by his authoritative win in the Group 2 Lennox Stakes at Goodwood last month.

The lure of top-class talent for reasonable money has encouraged buyers to spend big at DBS and last year Shadwell’s Angus Gold signed for 17 lots totalling £1,420,000, while the Doyles spent most, purchasing 28 of the 419 lots sold for £1,472,000. With buyers out in force, it was no surprise to see increases in all key indicators of the market.

With the DBS Premier Sales continuing to produce horses of the highest calibre at affordable prices, expect this year’s renewal to be as strong as ever.

Caspar filly spearheads strong draftCHASEMORE FARM sells at the Premier Yearling Sales for the second time this year and it has a particularly strong draft, headed by a daughter of Caspar Netscher (lot 81) out of an unraced half-sister to Tagula who has the unique selling point of being one of only three offspring conceived by the subfertile sire.

The son of Dutch Art returned to the racecourse in 2013 and won the Grade 2 Nearctic Stakes at Woodbine last year for David Simcock. He was last seen finishing seventh in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes.

“The Caspar Netscher filly is very nice,” says Chasemore Farm manager

PANTILE STUD’S Paco Boy filly (lot 286), who will be offered through Houghton Bloodstock, received a huge boost last month when her brother Galileo Gold stretched his winning sequence to three with an impressive win in the Group 2 Vintage Stakes at Glorious Goodwood.

The Cambridgeshire stud is managed by Bo Hicks-Little, who says: “It’s a fantastic

update and it’s all very exciting. The filly yearling is very nice and it’s all systems go for the Premier Sales.”

Pantile Stud is owned by Colin Murfitt, who bought Galileo Gold’s dam Galicuix, a seven-year-old daughter of Galileo, for the bargain sum of 8,000gns at Tattersalls in 2013.

The mare has a colt foal by Champs Elysees and is back in foal to the Juddmonte sire.

Galileo Gold exploits a huge boost for his Paco Boy sister

YEARLINGS by first-season sires always catch the imagination of buyers and Bob McCreery of Stowell Hill Stud in Somerset is consigning a colt (lot 500) who should attract plenty of attention.

He is by Galileo’s dual Group 1-winning son Nathaniel out of the Listed-winning Kirkwall mare Ronaldsay, who is part-owned by McCreery, Stowell Hill Stud manager David Ludlow and

Simon Tindall, who bred crack jumper Simonsig.

Ronaldsay has thrived as a broodmare and her offspring have sold particularly well at DBS. Her first foal was Group 3 winner Gale Force

Ten, a son of Oasis Dream who sold to Coolmore’s Eddie Fitzpatrick for the sale-record price of £280,000 in 2011, while the following year her Dubawi colt sold to John Ferguson for £180,000.

Son of new boy Nathaniel sure to have admirers

Paul Coombe. “She’s athletic, strong and straightforward. She’s the only one being sold, which should be a big draw, and in my opinion this is the best sale for her. The DBS team liked her.”

Coombe adds: “We’ve got a very nice draft of horses, including an Intikhab

half-brother to Ceiling Kitty [157], who is a nice horse, a lovely Sepoy colt [402] out of the Rockingham Stakes winner Max One Two Three, and a very nice son of Zoffany [480]. It’s a nice draft and we’re hopeful for the week.”

Silver service not short of intriguing lots on offer

BREEDERS Mick and Fiona Denniff of Denniff Farm in Nottinghamshire were smiling from ear to ear following the smart victory of Kachy, who they sold for £52,000 at the Premier Sales last year, in the Molecomb Stakes. The pair offer a Royal Applause half-sister (lot 242) to Tom Dascombe’s star juvenile this year through Mary Kennell’s Rosyground Stud.

“It was absolutely marvellous to see Kachy win and it was perfect timing with

the DBS Premier Sales just around the corner,” says Fiona. “Tom Dascombe has always thought a hell of a lot of him but it was still amazing to see him win in the style he did.

“The Royal Applause filly is very easy and laid back. She’s a delight to deal with, is a good mover and hopefully she’ll prove popular.”

Denniff will also be represented by a colt by Kachy’s sire Kyllachy (317) who is out of the Most Welcome mare Hill Welcome, Kachy’s great-granddam.

B EFORE Illuminate there was Craftsman and Lilbourne Lad, both of whom formed part of

successful Croom House Stud drafts at the DBS Premier Yearling Sales.

The Limerick nursery, birthplace of Group 1 winners Maybe and Zoffany – more of him later – is owned by Denis Brosnan and he runs the farm in conjunction with his son Cathal and manager Joe Hartigan.

That pedigree of excellence will ensure the seven yearlings consigned by Croom House Stud at this year’s auction will be eagerly anticipated, and none more so than lot 478.

The daughter of Dragon Pulse is a half-sister to Illuminate. This year’s Albany and Duchess of Cambridge Stakes winner is by leading first-crop sire Zoffany and was bred, raised and sold as a yearling by Croom House Stud.

Their dam Queen Of Stars is by Green Desert out of the Listed-winning Machiavellian mare Queen Catherine, who in turn was out of a mare by Nureyev, a conjunction of three strong sire lines that appealed to the team.

“We had no luck really with Queen Of Stars’ first five foals, but she has a very good pedigree and Denis always knew she would breed a good one,” Hartigan says.

“Illuminate was a gorgeous filly. Of all her foals until then, she was definitely the nicest. She was an excellent walker, an athletic filly and went to a good home with the Doyles, and nobody knows how good she could be.”

Illuminate is due to run in the Pinsent Masons Lowther Stakes this month before her younger half-sister takes a turn on the catwalk.

“She’s similar enough to

Illuminate as she’s a nice, correct filly with a very good walk and hip, so there are quite a lot of similarities between them,” Cathal says.

Restive was also sold at the 2014 Premier Sale by Croom House Stud. David Redvers purchased the colt for £110,000 on behalf of Qatar Racing and the son of Rip Van Winkle won a Curragh maiden on his third start for Ger Lyons this month. He holds an entry in next year’s Investec Derby.

H IS dam, I Hearyou Knocking, is a half-sister to the dam of Landseer and her yearling

filly by Intense Focus (323) is sure to catch the eye in the Doncaster sales ring.

“The Intense Focus filly is very nice and the mare is by Danehill Dancer – she’s only young but has already produced three winners. Her

first foal, by Pivotal, has won three and her three-year-old Nayef colt has won abroad,” says Hartigan.

Fastnet Rock has made his mark in the northern

hemisphere this season with Oaks heroine Qualify and fellow Group 1-winning filly Diamondsandrubies and the team at Croom House is hoping that will provide a boost to

Lot 179 is out of Brazilian Samba, an unraced daughter of Sadler’s Wells. Her 2009 son by Danehill Dancer,

gelding Endowing, is a multiple Group winner in Hong Kong as well as being Group 1-placed there and is the reason Brazilian Samba was sent to Fastnet Rock in 2013.

“Endowing had proved successful so we decided to send her to another Danehill stallion and chose Fastnet Rock,” says Cathal. “Hopefully Endowing’s success and

Qualify’s Classic win will boost this filly’s chances at the sales. The dam has a Dubawi colt at foot.”

Croom House stalwart Witch Of Fife.

Loreto won twice as a three-year-old and is a close relation to Group 3 winners Cabaret and Drumfire.

“The Pivotal colt is really nice, very correct and with a good walk,” says Hartigan.

Cathal adds: “He’s a really early two-year-old type and a very good-looking colt.”

The Croom House draft is completed by a Dandy Man colt (127), a Dragon Pulse colt (421) and a daughter of Bahamian Bounty (427).

Denis Brosnan is not unaccustomed to success in his own silks, as Hartigan explains: “If the fillies aren’t sold for some reason we race them and try to get some black type before we breed from them.”

Tyranny, the dam of Zoffany, Group 3-winning juvenile Wilshire Boulevard and Knocknagree, has a Frankel foal at foot.

This year four of the 30-strong broodmare band have been covered by Zoffany and two homebred yearlings by the stallion will be for sale in Ireland this sales season.

The Coolmore resident’s

brilliant start to his stallion career is gratifying and thrilling for the team.

“We’re delighted with how Zoffany is going as a stallion. He’s getting beautiful foals and we’re looking forward to selling our yearlings by him,” says Cathal.

Henry BeebyFOR as long as any of us can remember, my father Harry and I host dinners on each night of the sale in the hotel in which we’re staying, the Mount Pleasant.

The aptly named Henry’s Lounge has been the scene of many a relaxed, delicious meal with a variety of clients, where stories are swapped – and exaggerated! – in a most convivial atmosphere.

Michael DaleI STAY at the four-star Crown Hotel in Bawtry and the food is excellent while the bar also has a fantastic atmosphere, especially after sales days.

Bawtry also has a number of

nice restaurants and, for a change, I tend to take a team of regular clients to Emilio’s for some very good Italian food, or the China Rose Cantonese restaurant, where we have a regular slot during the sales.

Tim KentI TEND to stay in the Mount Pleasant, which has a number of cottages within the grounds, and many of our clients enjoy hosting their own informal dinner parties during the evenings.

I’d normally eat in the hotel restaurant, which is very good, or, for a change of scenery, Caviars restaurant in Bawtry is very nice. If you want a quick meal, Whitby’s Fish & Chip Restaurant is located on the opposite side of Leger Way from the sales complex and is also well worth a visit as you leave the sales.

Jeremy MactaggartI STAY in the Crown Hotel in Bawtry, a town that has a number of very nice restaurants, so we’re spoilt for choice.

One of my favourites is Emilio’s, but if we want something a little spicier the Dower House is a very popular Indian restaurant. The China Rose serves fantastic Chinese food and you’re guaranteed to find a lot of sales regulars in all three locations.

Stuart MactaggartBEING a creature of habit I stay at the Owston Hall Hotel, which has a golf course and health club and is situated just ten miles north of Doncaster.

The atmosphere is very relaxed and it’s easy to entertain clients in large or small groups as the food and

service is always first class. They also serve an excellent pint of John Smith’s, which is always a very welcome sight at the end of a long day at the sales.

George StannersI TRAVEL down from the Scottish Borders and stay in the recently refurbished, four-star Earl of Doncaster Hotel, which is a mile from the sales complex and a short walk into the centre of town. The hotel’s retro bar offers great craic in a very relaxed atmosphere, which is ideal after a long day at the sale.

For a bit of spice, the Taj Mahal Indian restaurant is very popular with sales regulars, while the Villas Romana (formerly Carlo’s) Italian restaurant has been a firm favourite for as long as I’ve been working for DBS.
