Welcome to the Spring issue of the New Forest Messenger.

Writing this on a wet and windy February afternoon, I am looking forward to the days getting longer and the lovely sound of bird song.

My favourite wild flowers will soon be appearing. I’ve chosen a beautiful photo of bluebell woods for the cover, taken in Tatchbury.

It seems to have been a long winter but there is lots to look forward to! We are celebrating a new decade and the Messenger is now in its 5th year!

Our main feature this time is all about the Countryside

Education Trust, Beaulieu – a great place to visit.

Seadown Vets continue to write for us; this issue, it’s all about cats.

We are including information about what is

going on in your local library (see page 9). We need to make better use of our libraries as some are in danger of closing and they really are wonderful community assets.

We have another great prize in our Wordsearch competition. We hope you enjoy all our puzzles and competitions. Good luck and Happy Easter.

Connecting People To The Countryside

By Denise Hurden

Spring is a time of intense activity in the forest and especially so at the Countryside Education Trust in Beaulieu where animals come and go at Home Farm, moving around and growing so no two animal feeds are the same!

Pockets of colour emerge in the garden while in the ancient woodlands around the treehouses in Hartford Wood new life is bursting from every corner.

Established in 1975, the Countryside Education Trust is a charity whose mission is to connect people of all ages and backgrounds with the countryside.

Alongside its programme of residential and day visits for schools, it runs a range of events to introduce people to the wonders of the British countryside, rural crafts and wildlife.

Regular Owls Clubs for children aged 0-10 fully engage children in outdoor activities linked to the seasons.

Adults can join in with everything from bird watching walks to rural skills classes as well as Open Days throughout the year.

Our libraries have been in the news lately, with Hampshire County Council considering 10 for closure, to save money. Two of those named are in the New Forest: Blackfield and Lyndhurst.

These days, libraries aren’t just about borrowing books;

all sorts of events take place in these community centres, which makes them all the more important.

There are many interesting talks, activities and learning opportunities, but please be aware that some events get booked quickly so check your local library’s Facebook page for up-to-date information.

Another service to highlight is the Home Library Service. If you find going to the library difficult then the library can come to you! It’s a free service run by volunteers. Just fill in a form from your local library or give them a call.

And if you have spare time on your hands, why not volunteer at your local library.

One Winter’s NightA short story by B. Pratt

She drove slowly down the country lane; although its curves and bends were familiar in the daytime, they could prove disastrous in the cold evening seamist. The foghorns boomed through the air. She was glad to reach the safety of the beach huts but drove on to the large concrete mooring area and leisure centre, then into the sheltering shadow of the Henry VIII fort.

Parking facing the water, she heard the gentle lapping of the waves on the shingle. Glancing around, she saw a few other brave people waiting to wave ‘bon voyage’ to loved ones and, through the mist, hazy lights twinkled on the far shore.

Her flask of coffee and deli rolls warmed her while she waited. The foghorns boomed louder and they were joined by horns approaching the Coastguard tower. Then, out of the mist, a hazy blaze of lights – slowly, slowly gliding nearer.

She got out and waved to the just visible silhouettes on balconies and on the upper deck near the funnel. Not one but two liners leaving on their world cruises.

Shivering in the cold, she heard the happy strains of sailaway music and watched as

the temporary homes disappeared into the greyness.

She got back into the car and sat imagining the colourful, exotic locations – the turquoise seas, white sands, swaying palms, noisy bazaars, ancient cities, different cultural histories, scary animals and exotic blooms in their own habitats.

Sighing, she switched on the engine and compared her prospect for the next three months.

Warmed in her thermals, she would walk on the pebbles, listen to the grey waves breaking on the shore, watch her beloved dog race to fetch a stick.

She would smile up at the weak sun coming through the white clouds, warm herself with a creamy hot chocolate in the beach cafe, then drive along the narrow lanes into the sheltering canopy of the fir trees. She would smell pine and perhaps see fox, squirrel or deer. Red berries on holly. Then on to the warming comfort of home and her friendly robin hoping for food.

“Yes,” she thought, “a winter’s night is long but holds the promise of beauty and happiness no matter where we are headed.”

Thanks to those who entered our Issue 18 short story competition. Mrs B. Pratt of Blackfield wins a £50 gift voucher, donated by Ryan Fencing Ltd.

Did you know that an increase of only 10% in second-hand sales of clothing could save 3% more carbon, 4% more water and 1% less waste for every tonne of clothing?

The average lifetime for an item of clothing in the UK is estimated to be 2.2 years. Meanwhile, adults in the UK wear only 44% of the clothing they own.

Extending the life of clothing by nine months can significantly reduce its environmental impact.

After housing, transport and food, clothing has the fourth largest impact on the environment.

The average water footprint of a shirt and a pair of jeans is between 10,000 and 20,000 litres. The greatest amount used is to grow the cotton required.

These facts are the reasons people should make better use of local charity shops.

Age Concern New Forest has four shops: 5C Rumbridge Street, Totton, SO40 9DQ; Beaulieu Road, Dibden Purlieu, SO45 4PX; 81 Long Lane, Holbury, SO45 2ND; and 175 Hampton Lane, Blackfield, SO45 1XA.

When choosing a cat it is wise to select an individual that fits in with you and your lifestyle, the environment in which they will live and to provide the level of companionship you require.

Cats do have differing personalities dependent on their hereditary and early experiences as a kitten. Your vet may able to give you some guidance about the needs and temperament of different breeds as they are exposed to many different ones in a working week!

The individual needs of the cat also need to be considered. In comparison to many pets, cats are considered relatively low maintenance. Generally they are fairly independent and adaptable to their owner’s lifestyle. However, specific cats will have their own unique needs. For example, a long-haired cat will need a lot of grooming.

Caring for a cat involves providing a suitable home with the necessary resources. This obviously includes providing suitable food, water and toileting and sleeping areas but in addition feline friendly mental and physical stimulation

alongside security and human companionship and interaction at a comfortable level for the individual.

Veterinary costs have to be considered alongside the costs of setting up a cat friendly home i.e. vaccination, neutering, pet insurance, preventative health care and unforeseen veterinary treatments.

Homing a kitten over an older cat has its advantages – meeting your family and existing pets may be more easy to manage, however a controlled introduction in both situations would be most beneficial in the long-term.

Kittens, however, generally have increased specific needs. Homing an adult cat has different advantages such as their personality is already likely to be known.

Also consider the day/time you bring your new cat home and avoid busy times – select a time when you are able to spend a couple of days assisting with your new cat settling in.

Finally, ensure that you choose your new cat from a reputable breeder or rescue centre to ensure that they have had the best start and care which will assist with their transition into your home.

There are a large variety of sources of information to assist in getting a cat including your local vet, the International Society of Feline Medicine (ISFM) and The Cat Group’s Kitten Checklist.

Home is where we are all the most comfortable and where our memories are. However, the elderly often have no choice but to give up the home they love.

At Bluebird Care, we try to offer different options. For example, when offered a simple daily call for check-ups or help with personal care, meal preparation and medication prompting, our clients can stay longer in the comfort of their own home.

With the help of live-in care, people can remain at home until nursing care is required.

This allows the elderly to stay with their pets and allows them to get up when they want to and go to bed when they want to. Live-in care also provides companionship during the day and reassurance at night.

For family members living a long way away, this option provides reassurance that their relation is being looked after

with respect and compassion.

This is the alternative to residential care.

GPs often refer patients to free services available but it is worthwhile investigating all the options available.

At Bluebird Care our friendly teams are more than happy to answer all your queries and help you to get the right person-centred care for your needs.

New Forest Messenger 27 ADVERTISEMENT FEATURE

Dillon joined Slimming World in November 2012 after a few unsuccessful attempts to lose weight. Her mother had suffered a heart attack and her grandmother had died of one at 62, so Dillon thought that, at the age of 50, she should probably do something about her weight.

She says, “I remember getting the Slimming World leaflets through my door and putting them in the bin, thinking that I would love to go, but I didn’t have the confidence to go on my own. At that point I was like a prisoner in my own home. I couldn’t go out unless I was with someone. Fortunately, my niece decided to join Slimming World and asked if I wanted to go with her. I was absolutely petrified when I walked into my first group and stuck to her side like a limpet.

“When I first went, I thought I would be the biggest person there and wondered why there were so many slim people attending. I soon realised they were at or near their target.

“At that time, I still didn’t realise how important it was to keep staying to Image Therapy once you’ve reached your target

weight. The groups are always so supportive and motivating. Everyone wants you to succeed and you gain so many ideas including recipes, different forms of exercise and everybody else’s inspirational stories. “The Slimming World website is brilliant when you want new recipes or ideas and the app is invaluable when out shopping. When I am shopping with my friends you can often see me with the app looking up the different foods.

“I love Food Optimising for the simple fact that you can eat so much. When we were told you could eat as much potato, rice and pasta as you like, I went away saying there was no way I was going to lose any weight. I was amazed when I got weighed after my first week and the scales said I had lost 7 pounds.

“I returned to cooking from scratch, something I thought wasn’t worth doing just for myself. I eat more now than I ever have and a lot more healthily.

“I went on to lose 8 stone and I feel amazing for it. I started walking to get exercise, and

“I love it so much that I have taken part in several walking challenges from 10k walks to 50k walks and I even rediscovered my passion for swimming and last year I took on a challenge to swim 50 miles in a month, and managed to do it in 23 days!”

Dillon’s consultant, Emilie Drew-Rook, says, “I am just so proud of what Dillon has achieved with her weight loss. Not only has she lost the pounds, she has gained so much more! She has gained so much confidence and so many friends. She now helps me with running the group and she has become an amazing friend to me. Although she won’t ever believe me when I tell her, she truly is an inspiration to me and all the members at Calmore Slimming World.”

This year, Langley WI will be celebrating its Ruby anniversary. That’s 40 years since the first meeting in November 1980 when more than 100 women formed an orderly queue to join up. We still have some of those founder members as well as some very new ones.

The photo shows some of the founder members in 1981 who had a whale of a time putting on a Funky Fashion Show at short notice when the planned entertainer couldn’t make it.

Isn’t the WI all about Jam and Jerusalem? Yes, indeed, some of us are great makers and bakers and we love a good sing-song, but there are others who couldn’t carry a tune in a bucket or bake a cake if their life depended on it! Langley WI is all about fun and friendship. There’s the chance to learn new skills, to get involved in community activities or share your own interests.

To mark our anniversary, our celebrations will include a Summer barbecue in August

and a party in November. If you’re wondering if the WI could be for you, come to a meeting at 7.30pm on the third Tuesday of the month at St Francis Hall, Langley SO45 1XU. Email:[email protected].
