Grandma’s CookiesSt. Charles, Missouri

Theresa Rubio

What is the most popular item on the menu and what makes it so special?Chocolate Chip is our most popular cookie. The mound shape makes it unique.

How many employees do you have on staff? We have four full time employees. We rely on friends and family when needed.

What is the History of Grandma’s Cookies? It all started in 1976. Grandma Thompson ran a dress shop and would make cookies to give to the children while their moms would shop. The parents would ask for a cookie as well, and eventually people would visit the shop just to get a cookie. Grandma Thompson decided to get out of the dress business and open Grandma’s Cookies. She closed shop in 2000. In 2004, I started doing special orders and delivery only, then in 2010 we re-opened the store here on Main Street.

On average, how many customers do you serve in a day, and what day is your busiest? What is your busiest season or holiday?Saturdays are the busiest. We can serve a few thousand cookies on a Saturday. The busiest season is definitely Christmas. We have companies that will order 100-250 cookies for the holidays, plus all the other special orders we get at this time. The maps on the wall represent all the places where our customers visit us from. It even includes those from outside of the U.S.

Walk us through a typical day at Grandma’s Cookies.A typical day starts at 8:00 am with making dough. We serve seven kinds of cookies daily. By 10:00 am, we have all seven kinds baked and out on display. We will continue to make dough and bake cookies throughout the day until 5:00 pm. Any special orders are filled during this time as well. We do have a shelf for day old cookies to sell, but anything past that, we donate to a local nursing home or the soup kitchen.

What has been your proudest moment since owning and operating Grandma’s Cookies?I am proud to say we were part of a local cookie eating contest to raise money for the Gateway Hemophilia Association. It feels good to give back and be a part of a great cause.

What is new, trending or innovative in your industry right now?I just believe you should stick with what works.

How long have you been a partner with Kohl Wholesale and why? Since we opened in 2010. We had a good connection with our first Sales Representative, Greg. I like the honest and real approach.

Tell us about your Kohl Wholesale sales representative and driver. Our current sales representative, Steve Edwards, is great. He bends over backwards, and will help us with anything we need. We receive a delivery once a week, and our usual driver is Mike. He is always kind and courteous.

What hobbies or interests do you take part in when you have free time? My husband, Angel, and I have five children. Our daughter is fifteen and we have four boys, ages: thirteen, eleven, seven and three. We are busy with all of their activities.

What do you consider the keys to your success? The employees I have are amazing. The business can’t run itself and the staff I have are dedicated. We all make and bake these cookies with love, and everyone takes pride in the product we produce.

What are the secrets to running a successful establishment?Heart and soul.

“A balanced diet is a cookie in each hand.”
