Canton Veterinary Clinic has been serving the northeast Missouri area for almost 20 years, providing care and services for all animals large and small. Owners and operators Dr. Dan Goehl and his wife Rachel decided to expand their business in 2012, opening a location in Palmyra to expand and help serve their client base south of Canton.

The Canton Vet Clinic staff will take great care of your pet. Their preventative medicine annual wellness exams help your pet enjoy a long life. Due to the accelerated life of small animals, their annual exam is equivalent to several years between exams in human medicine! Canton Veterinary Clinic offers progressive small animal medicine and surgery with the following services: blood chemistry machines, gas anesthesia, pulse-ox monitoring, radiographs, ultrasound, and ultrasonic dental equipment. Emergency service is available for current clients. A variety of wellness packages are available to meet your needs and maintain exceptional care for your pet. These incorporate pre-planning and an automated monthly payment schedule or a one-time annual payment.

Of course, Canton Veterinary Clinic also offers large animal services. Their primary food animal focus is beef. Staff assist in individual diagnostics and treatment as well as group health, nutrition (including hay analysis and ration building services) and production herd management. Record keeping and data management are available for stockers and cow-calf. The clinic also offers reproductive management services (estrus synchronization, artificial insemination, embryo transfer,

and fetal sexing) as well as custom heifer development. The clinic has management software, an electronic wand to accommodate EIDs with accompanying software,

ultrasound etc. Both in-house and mobile food animal services are available with emergency service available for current clients. Freeze branding can also be done. Canton V e t e r i n a r y Clinic partners with Genex C o o p e r a t i v e ,

Inc.; Kaley Bozarth is the semen salesperson. In-house BVD testing is offered.

Other large animal services include in-

house and mobile equine, white-tail deer and alpaca services. These include routine vaccinations and testing, dental work, and minor surgeries, as well as diagnostics. Equine breeding and hospitalization is done at the Canton location.

Relatively new are two portable hydraulic chutes for working cattle in the field and a portable corral system.

Also on staff full time in Canton are Jeff Logsdon (large animal technician); Kayla Houchins, Courtney Kirchner and

Kelsey Lovelace (small animal technicians); Mandi Handy (receptionist), Jeanette Mikos (bookkeeping) and Angie Parrish (general office).

Dr. Dan Goehl is also a staff member with Professional Beef Services (PBS), an organization dedicated to providing information to the beef industry. PBS aids in the collection, interpretation and implementation of data used for management decisions. Dan works primarily with progressive large animal producers consisting of stocker/starter yards and cow/calf beef operations. He and his wife also operate their own beef herd.

The Canton Veterinary Clinic buys several 4-H livestock trophies for the Marion County Fair and helps with the steer weigh-in at this event. CVC is excited to give back to their communities through the Clark, Lewis, Marion and Knox

County Fairs, local rodeos, 4-H Chapters, school functions, sporting events, and various charitable causes.

The Canton Veterinary Clinic currently employs 6 veterinarians to better service small and large animal clients over an 80 mile radius: owners Drs. Dan and Rachel Goehl and associate veterinarians, Dr. David Hudson, Dr. Joe Iliff, Dr. Andrew Perrine and Dr. Adam Gundel.

“When I got out of school, that would have been unheard of,” Goehl said of the large coverage area. “So, the more (vets) you have to do it, the better off you are,” he said.

Dr. David Hudson, a Palmyra native and 1999 PHS graduate, is the primary veterinarian at the Palmyra office. Eighty percentage of his work is large animal, though he does routine small animal surgery on Tuesday mornings. So if you bring your pet into the office you may see Dr. Andrew Perrine who is frequently in Palmyra. Cheri Hurliman, receptionist, will greet you when you open the clinic door. And Adam Kuebler, large and small animal technician, works with Dr. Hudson in the office and in the field.

“From kindergarten on, I always wanted to be a vet because I loved animals. I still love working with and helping animals, but I’ve learned that just as important are the friendships I’ve made with the people I meet through my job,” shared Hudson. “Owners decide where to take their animals; not the animals themselves.”

Chamber Briefs...The Palmyra Chamber of Commerce held its monthly meeting Tuesday, July 10, at the Rebel Pig. President Owen welcomed members and guests Braxton Long, recipient of the Chamber’s College-Bound scholarship, Jody Fisher with the Golden Ruler, and Justin Klocke and Aaron Carter with Senator Claire McCaskill’s office.

BICENTENNIAL COMMITTEE SHARE PLANSWITH PALMYRA CHAMBER Several members of Palmyra’s Bicentennial Committee were present to update the Chamber on the committee’s plans and progress. In an overview, Kayla Wittler shared a preview. A Bicentennial Kickoff will be held in conjunction with the Palmyra Chamber’s Annual Banquet in January. A family-friendly “birthday party” the weekend of August 9-10, to commemorate the actual date our city was platted, is in the works. A special Bicentennial focus is planned for the Taste of Palmyra in October 2019.

The Fundraising subcommittee, chaired by Teresa Smyser, is putting the finishing touches on fundraising efforts which will include sponsorships and memorabilia items including a Bicentennial rifle, coins, t-shirts and pottery. A Spring 2019 Bicentennial Golf Tournament is also being discussed.

Kirt Malone, Education subcommittee chair, is already working with an area artist to put together a coloring book on Palmyra history that can be distributed to all Palmyra elementary students. The Education subcommittee will also play an important role in developing activities for the August 2019 “birthday” celebration.

Danny Meyer is heading up the History subcommittee and is actively researching Palmyra’s rich past. The Marketing subcommittee has already set up Bicentennial Facebook and Instagram pages; check them out at Palmyra 200. Sheila Scholl, Marketing Chairperson, is currently developing a website.

“We are all very excited for this once in a lifetime event. Two hundred years and still growing! This is Palmyra’s birthday party, and we plan to celebrate throughout 2019!” summarized Wittler. “Palmyra wouldn’t be the place it is today without all of the great people in our community. Let’s come together and make our mark, giving Palmyra the appreciation and celebration that it deserves!”

The Bicentennial Committee meets the third Tuesday of each month; their next meeting will be held August 21. If you would like to join one of the subcommittees, contact Kayla Wittler at [email protected] or 217-242-1935. If you, your business or organization sponsors events in the Palmyra community, 2019 is the year to make them part of our Bicentennial celebration.
