EDITOR’SNOTE PIL celebrates its 50th birthday!

We have come a long way and are well en route to more memorable years ahead. This issue of PIL CONNECTS casts the spotlight on our anniversary celebrations. The guest night celebrations honours our close business partners and friends that have been with us throughout the years. Closer to our hearts, the staff night celebrations brought the best out of us; PIL’s own dragon dance troupe weaved between tables and set a high mark for the opening act. An open floor at the end of the programme saw our colleagues dance into the night. For our feature story, we take a closer look into the preparations that have made the celebrations possible.

Capt. Arun writes in from PIL New Zealand, where PIL has just celebrated its 20th anniversary of entering the New Zealand market. From the inaugural sailing to New Zealand from Singapore in May 1996 to the recent changes in the NZS service, Capt Arun Joshi shares with us how PIL has adapted to the many changes and the outlook in the near future.

Joining us on Coffee Talk this issue is Raymond Hew from MELL. As the general manager of MELL, Raymond divulges exciting new business developments and strategies to stay competitive in the market. The road trip aficionado also shares more on his trip to Loch Ness in Scotland and future plans.

Our corporate social responsibility (CSR) programmes see us making a positive impact in New Zealand, Timor-Leste, Kenya and Cameroon. From charity auctions in support of Cancer Society, Auckland to shipping of medical supplies and books to foreign shores, read on to find out how PIL gives back to the global community.

Club Pac also has something in the works for us. From the avid response that the club has been receiving from past sports events, there are plans to set up common interest groups for colleagues. Have great suggestions for sports activities? Club Pac wants to know more from you!

Join us on this celebratory issue of PIL CONNECTS as we give an in-depth cover of our golden jubilee!

50 years of excellence is no mean feat. To celebrate the momentous occasion,

PIL prepared a grand celebration to usher in our golden jubilee.

Prior to the 2-day festivities, two dedicated teams of PIL event planners scurried to make preparations for the slew

of programmes and logistical needs for the grand affair.

Chaired by our Executive Director (Corporate Development), Ms Lisa Teo, the 50th Anniversary organising committee

was in charge of the guest night celebrations. Ms Yvonne Koo lead the staff night Dinner & Dance committee for

all arrangements and programme for the staff night.

PIL TURNS

Guest NightCentral to a theme of gold, the committee wanted the party to exude an ambiance of grandeur. With that in mind, special care was paid to create the desired setting of the party.

For our golden jubilee, we wished to showcase PIL’s journey thus far. After repeated dives into our archives for significant stories and photos, a timeline aisle was constructed at the hotel’s reception area to highlight our most important milestones and to give a succinct overview of PIL’s history.

KOTA PAHLAWAN

PIL CONNECTS — 3

The stage was undoubtedly the most important site of the night where multiple speeches and signings had to be done. To decorate the stage, a backdrop emblazoned in varying hues of gold was chosen with PIL’s corporate colours of red and blue as font colours. The prominent centrepiece drew our guests’ gaze to the stage.

After perusing multiple avenues for entertainment, we decided to settle on a Chinese Orchestra performance. The 18-man ensemble gave a regal recital of pieces ranging from classics such as “茉莉花 (Jasmine Flower)” to a medley of classic songs from Teresa Teng comprising “小城故事”,“夜来香”, “但愿人长久” and “月亮代表我的心”.

To commemorate fifty successful years in shipping, a miniature Kota Cabar was built to adorn our birthday cake. The vessel surges ahead amid the waves as we push ahead into the next fifty years.

PIL CONNECTS is pleased to share some snippets of our guest night celebrations!

Staff nightPerformance #1: Dragon Dance

T o make a surefire entrance to our anniversary celebrations, the Dinner and Dance committee decided upon a dragon dance to kickstart PIL’s 50th Anniversary Celebration. Teamwork was

necessary to execute each stunt seamlessly; we felt that this reflected the spirit of PIL. Coincidently , Bob Yeo from Liner Trade was part of a dragon dance troupe and volunteered to coach PIL colleagues for the performance.

In order to maintain the element of surprise, the troupe decided to hold the secret practice sessions at the PIL Building Carpark. As weeks passed, the troupe became more proficient with the art and were able to put up a good show for PIL’s 50th golden jubilee.

Performance #2: Song & Dance

A nother segment arranged for the night was the Song and Dance rendition of the Song “Jiak Ba Buay”, i.e. Have you eaten? The cheery music encourages listeners to take up an active lifestyle while the retro

dance moves are certain to attract attention.

Without prior dance background, the performers mastered their dance moves under the tutelage of Mengting from Liner Trade, who is known for her passion for dancing. While decked in retro uniforms and accompanied by the voices of the three lead singers, the dancers made dramatic improvements in their weekly practices.

The singers were selected for an obvious reason: they were proficient with the Hokkien dialect. In addition, they were also motivated to bring laughter and joy to PIL’s 50th anniversary celebrations.

Performance #3: Song item 1 (MELL – Michael)

M ichael did not expect to be talent-hunted by the D & D committee. Little did he know that he had left a lasting impression on our colleagues back in 2015 when he was the runner up for the PIL KTV competition.

Being more comfortable with Chinese songs, Michael selected the song “谢谢你的爱” (Thank You for Your Love) by 谢霆锋 (Nicholas Tse).

Performance #4 and Finale: (MPS - Hao Chen)

I nitially, Hao Chen selected “一路上有你” from “张学友 (Jacky Cheung)” for his performance. The champion of the 2015 PIL KTV competition felt that the song is profound and was able to express his gratitude for being part of

the PIL family. However, the song was later rejected as it is too passive and did not suit the upbeat celebration.

He finally decided upon two songs: “Take me to your heart” by “Michael Learns To Rock”, and a Cantonese piece “红日” by “李克勤 (Hacken Lee)”. Haochen’s dialect is not Cantonese and he had to spend more effort to ensure that the lyrics were sung accurately to the fast tempo.

T ensions were high. There were no signs of ceasefire or reconciliation after a war broke out between Iraq and Iran. In order to prevent ships from the Persian Gulf ports

from entering the Arabian River and to ensure the safety of the commercial vessels that berthed along the Arabian River Coast, the Iraq military ordered a port closure. Many commercial vessels were trapped, unable to go anywhere.

One of them was PIL’s 10,000-ton commercial vessel Kota Mas, with approximately 40 crew members onboard. The crew witnessed planes bursting into flames, earth-shattering bombing runs and innocent lives being lost.

To make things worse, fresh water and food supplies were dwindling. Wishing to escape from the bombing or from starvation, 27 crew members onboard Kota Mas decided to abandon the ship and seek for survival outside. The remaining 10 chose to remain on deck.

Recounts about the Iran-Iraq war in1980

The 27 crew members left secretly in small groups and arrived at the Kuwait-Iraq border. Little did they know, Kuwait had closed their borders to prevent the influx of refugees from entering. An agent of Pacific International Lines, General Enterprise for Maritime Agency which previously agreed to help the crew members, was unwilling to extend any further assistance. The crew members, plunged into sheer despair, were devastated that they may be unable to return to Singapore. The crew members then applied for entry with the Kuwaiti authorities while staying put at Abudi – a desert area.

They were put up for 13 days in Abudi, battling against harsh weather, mosquito-infested conditions, lack of water supply and rations before their application to enter was approved. PIL immediately arranged for their flights back to Singapore. Fortunately, the 27 crew members survived and their arduous journey had finally ended. The 10 crew members who chose to remain on deck were also brought back safely to Singapore after the episode.

Can you tell us how long have you been with MELL?

I have been with MELL for close to 2 years. However, the moment when I joined MELL is still fresh in memory. I feels only like yesterday when I first stepped into the office.

Can you share three things about yourself that people are unaware of?

Great topic! I haven’t thought anything about myself for a while. I think the following traits would best describe me.

1. Waking up early. I developed this habit from the moment I began working. On working days, I usually turn in before 10pm and wake up no later than 4am. This gives me the time I need to plan the day ahead. What’s important is that by waking up early, I feel vigorous, fresh and ready to tackle the challenges for the day. I believe it is a good habit for me to keep and continue.

2. Love coffee. Growing up, I never thought I would be a coffee drinker. I just could not stomach the stuff unless I added creamer and sugar. As I grew older, coffee quickly became an integral part of my life. I began with a cup a day and now I am hovering around 6 to 7 cups a day. I have now switched to “Kopi-O kosong” (coffee without cream, milk or sugar). I am not a coffee connoisseur but I think this is the perfect way to savour the taste of coffee. Coffee just makes me feel so good!

3. Easy going. In general, I am someone who is easy to get along with and have little difficulty in making friends in any situation. My star sign is Aquarius and perhaps that explains my personality. Those who know me long enough would find me friendly and comfortable to be with.

Name an inspirational figure that you look up to. How has this person influenced your outlook on work and life?

There are a number of important people who are close to my heart and have considerable impact and influence in my life. The most inspiring figure would have to be my dad.

He is one that knows me best and is also the one that I see the most and have known for the longest time. He always stands by my side, and whenever I fall down, he encourages me to stand up by myself and on my own feet. He understands everything I go through in life and has inspired me to do my best and work my hardest in all I do, regardless if I succeed or not. He is always there to give me a big hug and tells me everything will be alright.

I come from a humble family with my dad as the sole breadwinner. He worked hard to save every penny he earned so that he could buy anything that I need. He always encouraged me to go to school

because he knows that the future of a person is determined by his education, which

he was unfortunately deprived of due to the extremely difficult circumstances in his youth.

My dad has a huge impact on the way I turned out. The most important lesson he taught me was how to be a man. I still remember the day that my father sat next to me and said “Hey son, the most important thing to help you become a successful person is your integrity and honesty. Never lie to anyone and never lie to yourself.” He showed that every bad situation in the world began with a lie and told me that being a man means facing the truth and taking responsibility for one’s own actions. I always think back on those words when I get into trouble.

I am thankful for everything he taught me, to be hardworking and a better person not only to my family and friends, but also to the company and colleagues. I am what I am today because of him and would credit all my achievements in life to him.

What do you always want to try but never did?

Driving is my passion and I enjoyed every bit of it during my stay in the UK, especially when I am covering long distances. The longest trip I have driven has to be to Loch Ness, Scotland Highland, from London. The entire road trip, back and forth, covered 1,200 miles in total; this took me 15 hours on the road in each direction with just a few toilet breaks in between. It was a tiring but very exciting journey filled with challenges and tested my perseverance. What is more important is that my family had a good time on the road trip holiday and I brought them back safe and sound.

The next challenge that I aspire towards is a caravan holiday with my family from London to Sicily, Italy. The region is famous for its rich history and historical sites like Valley of the Temples, Doric-style Greek temples, as well as Mount Etna, one of Europe’s tallest active volcanoes. The trip was previously planned but aborted subsequently due to some unforeseen circumstances. However, it remains in my plan to do this in the foreseeable future.

Can you elaborate more on the functions of the division/department that you are heading? Are there any new developments?

In my role as general manager of MELL, I am accountable to the Board of Directors for all business activities of the company with emphasis on the financial results, business profitability, and maximising returns to the shareholders.

We have a total of 47 staff in MELL across various business units comprising of Trade, Logistics, Finance, Regional Documentation, IT, and Agencies & Sales, including 3 owner representatives based in Papua New Guinea, East Timor, and the Philippines. In a restructuring exercise, the functions of Human Resource, Vessel Operations & Planning, and Equipment M&R have been outsourced to PIL to achieve better cost efficiencies and quality of services.

MELL’s business structure is similar to PIL but on a much smaller scale. In total, MELL operates 3 trade services with 8 vessels, all Kota ships, plying the regions in Micronesia Islands, East Timor, North Australia, and Papua New Guinea.

On the new business developments, MELL in partnership with PIL will be launching a new service linking China with Papua New Guinea, South Pacific, and Marshall Islands with 3 x 700 Teu effective vessels on a fortnightly run. MELL has named the service as Majuro South Pacific (MSP) while PIL branded it as South Pacific Service (SPS). In this joint cooperation, MELL will be the vessel operator with PIL taking fixed slot of 300 Teu per voyage. The new service offers the market faster and more competitive transit times to Papua New Guinea and South Pacific Islands that will enhance the network competitiveness for both PIL and MELL in this region. The service will commence with Kota Hapas as the maiden voyage from Nansha on 28 February 2017.

P acific International Lines is one of the earliest shipping lines to penetrate the New Zealand market. PIL NZ, which is part of Mckay Shipping Limited, commenced

service to New Zealand with its first sailing from Singapore in May 1996. The service began as a vessel-sharing consortium joint by Malaysian International Shipping Corporation (MISC). In its early days, NZS was launched with a ten day frequency and served by 800 TEU capacity vessels; PIL inducted Kota Berkat and Kota Berlian into this service as well.

PIL then extended their Asia to New Zealand network to the Pacific Islands with a connecting carrier arrangement through Pacific Direct Lines based at Auckland.

Over the last 20 years, PIL NZ have seen a series of changes including MISC pulling away from shipping; OOCL, NYK and MOL joining PIL on the New Zealand Service; this year, the NZS service is also undergoing further changes with ANL, APL and COSCO joining the service while MOL and NYK are departing to become slot charter operators for Maersk .

Throughout all these changes and strong competition in the market, the common strong factor is that PIL NZ has remained the “rock” in the NZS service offering stability over the past 20 years and will continue to do so in the future. With PIL cementing its place in New Zealand, the natural progression was to commence direct services from North China with then China Shipping (now COSCO), OOCL, CMA on a weekly cycle (NCS Service) .

The Transpacific service (CTP) that stretches from Asia to USA and then into Australia and New Zealand with a 10 ship weekly service challenged the North American conference members for 2 years before PIL joined the conference in 2014. It is now maintaining strong growth for the southbound leg into New Zealand and Australia.

With strong leadership and the ability to adapt to the constant changes, the future looks ever brighter as we move into 2020 and beyond.

INTEGRITY – THE BEDROCK OF OUR ORGANISATION

Saripah Mohd Noor from Agency & Sales Division was welcoming agents from Jakarta at the lounge on 12th oor. After passing some souvenirs to the guests, she went back to her workstation. She did not realise her ring was missing from her nger until she got home. The ring meant a lot to Saripah as it was a gift from her mother.

S aripah searched frantically for it and retraced her steps without any luck. She was depressed and down heartened that she lost the ring her mother gave her.

Little did she know, an agent staff found Saripah’s ring and brought it to Hendy from ISD. The ring was then turned into Jocelyn from Admin for safekeeping. An email broadcast that a ring has been found was then sent out to all PIL staff.

Saripah saw the email and responded that she had lost a gold ring. She was the only person who claimed the ring. The gold band design was minimalistic and timeless.

We are glad that the ring was returned to its rightful owner. More importantly, we are pleased to have such honest and righteous employees; not only Hendy but no other colleagues tried to make a claim on the ring. At PIL, we always do the right thing, even when no one is watching.

Any beautiful, inspiring and motivating stories to tell?

CrossRoads Foundation

PIL supported the Hong Kong based non-profit organisation, CrossRoads Foundation, by fully subsidising in their shipments to Cameroon and Kenya. The first shipment supported a school in a poor area of Kayole, Nairobi. The educational supplies such as computers, school desks and chairs have enabled the number of students to increase from 100 to 1,000. In addition, they were able to build a new library with books received from Hong Kong.

PIL also carried a shipment sent to a remote, rural area of western Cameroon cut off from public services like medical clinics and schools. Crossroads’ shipment has equipped and supplied a healthcare center accessed by 18,000 inhabitants while educational equipment, computers, furniture and toys were sent to local schools.

Nazareth Outreach Work (NOW)

Nazareth Outreach Work is a worldwide social justice initiative, launched and facilitated by the Nazareth Catholic Community.

PIL is delighted to work together with the Nazareth Catholic Community in shipping three containers to the Triloka village in Timor-Leste. The supply of furniture, clothes, toys, computers, monitors, projectors and other IT equipment enabled the locals to undertake training and develop new skills.

Efforts in New Zealand

One of PIL’s subsidiaries, PDL hosted a special auction in support of the ‘Walking Stars 2016’ by the Cancer Society, Auckland and the ‘Fiji Oxygen Project’ by Cure Kids. The company came together and helped raised over $50,000 for the two causes.

Club Pacific Sports Interest Groups (SIGs)

Writer: Mun Yong Jian Editor: Maurice Mok | Staff Engagement

Sports Interest Groups (SIGs)Have you ever felt like a bubble ball?

Bouncing in anticipation, anxiously awaiting your turn on the court? We were pleasantly surprised to discover sporting talents of all shapes and sizes (everyone managed to fit inside the ball) during our Bubble Ball Tournament last October! The poor visibility of the surroundings from inside the ball, coupled with the competitive nature of the sport spiked adrenaline levels and forged unforgettable memories on the grass field.

Within a week of the bubble ball tournament, we managed to gather representatives from various departments to take part in the PIL-PSA friendly games. We played against PSA in Table Tennis, Badminton and Captain’s Ball, and eventually clinched overall victory in the games. Who knew we had such talent!

Hence, Club Pacific decided to establish the Sports Interest Groups (SIG) to gather all colleagues in Singapore with

similar interest or aptitude. Club Pacific will support activities under SIG, such as to organise practice sessions or friendly competitions. In time, we hope colleagues can take the lead in these SIGs to maintain a healthy lifestyle and to develop new talents within the company. We welcome new sports ideas! If you do have ideas and/or interest in any sport that is not already planned, please indicate your interest by sending an email to [email protected].
