Inspiring Wellness, Passion, and Purpose.I have “friends” on social media: life coaches, yoga instructors, wellness practitioners. You know the type, they always seem so happy, so grounded, so motivated by life…and I think, that cannot be real. Nobody is that happy, then I met Cheryl of Cheryl Hiebert Wellness.I joined Cheryl in her backyard, along with a tame chipmunk and some curious bees to talk about wellness. So, tell me Cheryl, what is Reiki (pronounced rake-y, I learned that right away)? “Reiki is an energy healing process that came from Japan, it is a hands-on energy healing practice to restore the natural flow of energy in the body. So if you think of a beaver, it kind of moves in and it finds this beautiful stream and it moves its fami-ly in and builds a dam. What does that do to the water? The flow of the water changes, maybe it

becomes stagnant, or it overflows, or it is just not moving anymore, our body is the same way. We get these beaver dams, these energy block-ages that are caused by loss or stress. Just look at what we’ve been through these last six months. We end up not feeling great. We’re not happy we might have headaches or some sort of imbal-ance in the body and that’s all caused by some sort of energy stagnation. With the hands-on healing reiki helps to restore the body’s natural energy so we begin to heal.”Cheryl calls her work – “my big buffet of offer-ings and the reason it’s so big is that I’ve been studying for over 30 years. So when somebody comes in, I probably have some practice or tool or offering that is going to meet their need at that time. And it can change, I can work with someone over the years and move through their changes. Ultimately what I want to do is get somebody feeling better so when they wake up in the morning, they feel like they want to be here, they’re happy.“

Some months ago, my daughter gave me a yoga book and a mat, and I have been trying to form a habit of doing some version of yoga in the mornings. I asked Cheryl to tell me about her yoga practice, “I teach Kundalini yoga classes. Along with meditation which is always part of those classes and another way that I can guide people through their own healing and begin to develop a deep mind body connection within themselves. So really starting to be aware of the breath, which changes everything. It literally changes our life when we deepen our breath and start to become aware of how we are breathing, because how we breathe is how we actually navigate life. The deeper the breath the deeper the life. Interesting isn’t it?”

I asked Cheryl to tell me , “What is the essence of your business ?” “So really what I try to achieve with everyone I work with whether it’s a one on one session or a workshop or corpo-rate wellness program is to help people feel like when they get out of bed in the morning they love their life, they feel happy and on path. I often say that I’m here to inspire your wellness, passion, and purpose.”

Boost Your Immune SystemThis week I discuss how to naturally boost your immune system. Our immune system is designed to combat colds and viruses natural-ly, however, sometimes we get off track in our wellness and this innate biological intelligence needs some extra support. Please know we can positively or negatively affect this powerful aspect of who we are.As we move into the fall/winter season it is normal for the flu virus beginning to circulate as the kids return to school. We have heard a lot about gloves, mask, shields, hand sanitizers, hand washing and distancing as preventative measures. There are other important aspects to consider in supporting our amazing immune system: What negatively affects the immune system?Stress, no sleep, poor quality foods, no exercise, conflict, fear, no loving support, and much more.Let’s take a look at ourselves from the holistic mind, body, and spirit perspective and discover what positively affects the immune system: Physical (our actual body) – vitamins; espe-cially D intake, walking, exercise, breath work, moving the body with dance, sunlight, staying grounded, eating healthy whole fresh foods.Emotional (how we feel) – feeling safe, intimacy, love, connection, spending quality time with loved ones, feeling supported, having someone to really talk to when you need to.

Mental (what we think about) – talk about how you are feeling, journal, take a break from de-vices, news and TV, shift out of fearful thought patterns to ones of love and peace as often as you can.Spiritual (our belief system in God or a higher power) – meditation, yoga, time in nature, silence, quiet, unity, community.I love what Dr. Christiane Northrup has shared over the past few months: “Community is Immunity”Remember to reach out for support. I offer a wide variety of sessions and workshops that have been created to support your wellness and personal growth, and please share this newslet-ter with others to help support them too.

Begin Your Day MindfullyBeing mindful of the way we begin the day can set the tone for the entire day. When we rush out of bed we miss a wonderful opportunity to move through the day with inner peace, calm and kindness. Try not to roll over and check your phone; try this instead.

These are a few ways to begin your day. Allow yourself to slowly incorporate one or two to begin. As you notice how amazing you feel, add in one more at a time. Slow is always best to begin - this allows us to fully embrace the new habit.

• Wake up with the light; with the natural sunrise (whenever you can). This is a peaceful and calm way to wake up.

• Have a soothing alarm – one that has softer music playing that slowly increases in volume. Harsh music can feel like an attack on our senses after sleeping.

• Take 3 deep and long inhales and exhales.

• Drink water – you are groggy and out of it from being dehydrated (coffee is fine but have some water first; caffeine is a diuretic)

• Open a window or door - take a breath of fresh air and let your eyes rest on something ‘real’ like a tree. (this is so grounding)

• Do a few easy stretches to get the blood flowing and some of the sleeping kinks out of your body.

• Meditate - even if it is just one or two minutes. Each time you get distracted, keep coming back to the breath - try not to follow a thought or engage in what shows up. Say to yourself;: ‘I let that go for now’ or ‘Hmmm….I am thinking’ – and return to the breath.

He conducts interviews with climate leaders on his Carbon and the City video blog and his YouTube channel, CarbonMedia and he broadcasts the Carbon and the City radio show Sunday’s on CJAI 92.1 FM.

“Tyranny naturally arises out of democracy.” Plato In the beginning man lived in the “state of nature”. In the “state of nature”, according to sev-enteenth century philosopher Thomas Hobbes human life would have been “solitary, poor, nas-ty, brutish and short”. A few other philosophers of the day, notably John Locke and Jean-Jacques Rousseau added their thoughts and the model for today’s social contract emerged from the period known as the Age of Enlightenment. The social contract is the moral and political philosophy that lends legitimacy to a govern-ment. Under the social contract individuals, you and I, have consented to surrender some of our freedoms in exchange for protection of our remaining rights. After the second world war, countries around the world expanded the social contract to include such things as healthcare, a financial safety net, and equality. Protection from enemies at home and abroad has always been explicitly or implicitly included in the role of the govern-ment. Under the social contract the rule of the govern-ment is fragile, the power is always in the hands of the governed and rulers maintain it only by the consent of the people yet today in many parts of the world, the social contract is hanging on by a thread. Far right government leaders emboldened by the actions and words of Trump are seizing more power for themselves and their friends. Friends in this sense is a euphemism for corporations and their added power is never good for the environment. Or more succinctly the surviv-al of human civilization in the face of global warming, clearly a human right within the social contract. Under Trump the once respected US Environmental Protection Agency has been

reduced to nothing more than a stooge for the whims of corporations. In Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro immediately after taking power set the Amazon Rain Forest ablaze to satisfy the Brazilian mafia run agribusiness.

You will recall that Ontario Premier Doug Ford, on taking office, fired Ontario’s Chief Scientist, closed the Environmental Commissioner’s Office and fired her too. He cancelled Cap & Trade costing the province 3 billion, cancelled 750 green energy projects costing the province over 230 million, eliminated electric vehicle incentives and cancelled contracts to build charging stations. At the same time he was doing all this and more he handed out $400 million to big business in a Hail Mary attempt to show a commitment to help business reduce carbon emissions, that $400 million was never heard from again. You may also recall he attempted to hand the Environmentally Protected “Greenbelt” off to developers, citizens pushed back. Well an elephant never forgets, and it seems Ford doesn’t either. On July 21, under the cloak of invisibility afforded by Covid 19, Ford rammed through his Omnibus Bill 197, essentially gutting the

Environmental Assessment Act while ignoring the requirements for 30 days of public consul-tation ( a move he continues to make over and over again). Clearly Ford is moving toward a more author-itarian government. His friend in the trenches Alberta’s Jason Kenney is way ahead though. Kenney’s Bill 1 builds on a trend in the US making it illegal to protest, those who do (our sons and daughters) face 6 months in jail and a $25,000 fine.

Authoritarian governments have taken power under Narendra Modi in India, Viktor Orban in Hungary, Matteo Salvini in Italy, Jair Bolsonaro in Brazil and the US continues its slide under Trump and now at least two Canadian provinces are moving in lock step.

Plato said, “Tyranny naturally arises out of democracy”, he also said “If you do not take an interest in the affairs of your government, then you are doomed to live under the rule of fools.” It would appear that those fools have tyranny in mind.

Kingston Among 25 Showcase CitiesIn Canada, some 80% of the news is controlled and delivered to us by just five corporations: Bell Media, Rogers Media, Postmedia, Corus, and Torstar. Each of these corporations owns a huge network of print and broadcast subsidiaries and affiliates in Canada. It is the same all around the world, a very few corporations control the news and decide on a daily, though more likely an hourly basis, what is news worthy – or more precisely what is worthy of a 10 second news bite.News here at home has been dominated by Covid 19 for some months and lately by the antics of Donald Trump to the south of us.Climate Change, the most pressing problem facing humanity has all but disappeared from the news cycle. Greta Thunberg has been quoted as saying that she doesn’t understand why we are talking about anything else and I agree. Climate Change should be front and centre on everyone’s mind and pressuring governments to act should be on our daily action lists. So, when I read that Kingston had been selected as one of 25 Showcase Cities in Canada by an organization called the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy, I wanted to know more.

The Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy is a worldwide organization with over 10,000 participating cities calling on govern-ments for climate action. A role that cities are uniquely positioned for since it is in the cities where the effects of climate change are most visible and it is the cities that have the most direct line of communication with all levels of government. As a Showcase City, Kingston will receive exten-sive support to further reduce GHG emissions and adapt to climate change. It is interesting to note that in Canada as with the rest of the world cities directly influence more than 50% of a nation’s GHG emissions.Clearly if we scratch below the surface of the collective message fed to us by the world’s con-solidated “news corps” we find that maybe, just maybe we really are dealing with climate change and talking about nothing else.To learn more, start here: https://www.global-covenantofmayors.org/region/canada/
