Use of the Feature Code Library or Data Dictionary files in GPS field instruments provides a method for uniformity in data collected from base to base.

FCL and GPS Work

The Data Dictionary allows for easy population of all field data

required to populate the GCMDS and GeoCSIRs.

A set of attributes for a given entity that is used in a GPS data collector in the form of pick list.

•Feature Code and Attribute Library - Trimble 5700 (Geomatics Office)•Data Dictionary - Trimble GeoXT and ProXRS (Pathfinder Office)•Use the dictionary to simplify the data gathering task.

a. Create the dictionary with feature attributes in a pick list.b. Default any attribute that may be dominate.c. Create the dictionary to require any mandatory data that must be gathered.

• Map Source (mapsrc_d); where did the information come from. – GPS = data shown has been collected with a GPS unit– CSIR = data was collected from CSIRs – As-Builts = data was collected from as built drawings

• Map Accuracy (mapacu); how accurate is the data. This field will allow a buffer to be established around the commpath feature. This is a confidence factor that the comm feature is located within this buffer. Default in data dictionary is 1. – 1 = GPS data with sub-meter unit. A one meter buffer will be

established on each side of the comm feature.– 25 = CSIR or other data. A 25 meter buffer will be

established on each side of the comm feature.

Comm Vault – (coestvlt)

• Below ground communications enclosure used for splicing and terminating ends of cables. This type of enclosure is different from a manhole due to the vault being under a building with entrance from inside the building.

• A point feature – Note if it has an outside manhole cover.• Comm vault has basic information about the enclosure. What

type of enclosure, date of installation, etc.• Primary use will be for digging permits.• No conduit or cable information.• Mandatory fields for GPS work are map source and map

accuracy.

GPS Techniques

Commpath – Line feature– Start and End vertices and any locations that trench

deviates more than 18” (approx).– Each vertex should be occupied by one interval (15 second

data collection for each interval), then paused to move to next vertex.

This allows minimum cleanup work back in office.

Comm Manhole, Pedestal, Direct Bury Splice & Vault – Point features– Taken over center of manhole cover, pedestal or splice– Each point should be occupied for 15-30 seconds– Minimize movement while GPSing

Page 21: Feature Code Library and Comm MDSproceedings.ndia.org/JSEM2004/GeoBase/jones_d.pdf · Feature Code Library and Comm MDS From data dictionary to database Dennis Jones 38EIG GIO Comm

CSIRs

• Communication System Installation Records - CSIRs.• CAD drawings in MicroStation format.• No coordinate system – Not spatially correct or projected.• Keysheet (CIP) is not regularly updated; most are out of date.• Average of 200 drawings per base.• All conduit and cable information stored in graphics – no smart

drawings or relational databases.• Base updates, then sends redline paper copies to 38 EIG.• Will require tone location to fully validate existing location.• Not compatible with CIPS, GeoBase and other database

oriented platforms.

GeoCSIRs

• CSIRs that are migrated to a GIS web based platform.• Oracle and SDE based enabled thru the local web portal.• Spatially correct and projected.• CIP is maintained and shared by local GIO.• Will require updates and tone location to fully validate existing

location of point of line features.• Compatible with CIPS, GeoBase and other database oriented

platforms. • On demand comm maps served thru local GeoBase portal. No

drawing inventory to maintain.• GCMDS ownership and maintenance responsibilities at base

SC shop.• Base updates, then replicates data to 38 EIG to maintain GCM &

CIPS data.

Spiral II and Beyond

• GeoCSIR Editor Tools – in beta testing now at Patrick and Tinker AFB. Keesler AFB one of first beta testers.– Editor allows:

• Input and editing of duct data (conduit type, amount, pull ropes, etc.)

• Input and editing of sheath data (cable type, counts, splice information, etc.)

• Input and editing of manhole data (duct configurations, pulling eye, ladder, etc.)

• Completion of the GCMDS. This will move data from only a digging permit tool to a complete management tool.

• Later GeoCSIR Editor Tools – Allows interface to all inside and outside plant records and

data.– Analyzing tools are web-enabled using GeoBase and CIPS

portals.
