  • The Longford Family Band

Goosebump - inducing vocals and simplistic acoustic folk guitar are the two most prominent characteristics of The Longford Family Band. The combination of Laura Shackletons enchanting voice and Tom Alexander Baileys rough Frank Turner-esque lyrics provide the perfect sound for this politically incorrect band.

Tom and Laura are joined by Pete Dudbridge, Finley Scott, Ben Strachan and Emily Vere who came together as The Longford Family Band after they were deemed the worst residents of a street by the same name.

The multi-talented members constantly swap instruments from one song to the next, including the likes of the mandalin, ukulele and bongos, to provide spontaneous performances which differ erratically from one night to the next.

Incorporating a wide range of emotions- heartache, anger, love- with their strong political messages is what makes The Longford Family Band stand out from many other Derby based folk artists. Because of their controversial themes, they often get a build up of angry hecklers, Tom shares his unique way of dealing with them, When we get heckled, I simply invite them up on stage with

us and offer them a shaky bean stick so that they can play along with us. One guy said it was the best experience of his life.

Songs like Raining in England make use of simplistic images and ideas to portray powerful messages, where songs like Girls Dont Play Guitar and Plastic Politics take a full on approach tackling social issues like feminism and working class oppression head on. Tom says its important to sing about the triumphs and turmoils of the everyday life and politics relate to everyone.

The band are already becoming popular as regulars in the folk culture of Derby. Tom explains, You can find us at Ryans Bar, The Dolphin, The Rowdich, or even busking in the streets. With a position in the Saltaire festival in Bradford this coming September, this band are one to watch out for. To listen to The Longford Family Band visit their MySpace at:

  • The Park Bench

Trance guitar riffs, addictive bass lines and coarse vocals make Derby based alternative rock band The Park Bench, the up-and-coming success they are today. After six years of establishing their sound they come fully formed as five piece Marc Anthony (Vocals), Floyd Parker (Vocals & Rhythm), Derek Sanchez (Vocals & Lead), Matt Blackwell (Bass) and Shane Grogan (Drums). Matt explains The band has definitely changed quite a lot dynamically, but the passion has stayed the same, if not grown more. The Park Bench arent just passionate about their music, theyve also gained a reputation for their Energetic performances and Wild after parties. As for the wild after parties- I guess our invite was lost in the post, but were assured Seeing is believing. We work hard, we play hard, thats the aim of the game.

Influences from The Beatles to Incubus offer splashes of inspirational colour but their true influences come from life, Save Me From the Animals is in remembrance of one of Lloyds great departed uncles and Flyspray is about a girl who cant be mention here. She knows who she is.

The Park Bench have worked their way up from the bottom, deciding upon their band name whilst two of their members were homeless and practically living on a park bench. Now their successes include a place in the final of Derbys Got Talent, successful gigs up and down the country, and interest from a major record label.

To listen to their music you can catch them at one of the gigs, purchase their LP A View of the Bench, or visit their MySpace at:
