Finally, on behalf of the faculty and staff, I congratulate the members of the Class of 2016 who will graduate in a few days. They have worked diligently during their high school years; we’re proud of their accomplishments and look forward to their bright futures. We hope they will always consider CTC to be their home and, of course, wish them all a lifetime of health and happiness. We also look forward to maintaining contact with our graduates for years to come as we build our alumni network. We look forward to welcoming everyone else back in August. Have a restful summer. Message from the PrincipalHello CTC Parents, Students and Staff: As we come to the end of another school year, I’d like to recognize the achievements of our seniors. Biomedical Science Internships Eight Biomedical Science students were recently selected for paid student internships at Fort Detrick for the summer and during their senior year. Rayann Eaves will be an intern at the United States Army Medical Research Institute for Infectious Disease (USAMRIID). Alexi Baumgardner, Katie Dapkus, Tess Fiorentino, Emma Gergel, Haley Smith and Isabella Teixeira will be participants in the Werner H. Kirsten (WHK)internship program at the National Cancer Institute (NCI). Broc Peterson will also be working at NCI, independent of the WHK program. Rayann will be working in the Molecular and Translational Sciences Division at USAMRIID with Captain Merle L. Gilbert, PhD. There she will study co-opting bacterial secretion systems to understand how they deliver proteins. She will be working with antibiotic resistant bacteria in both cell cultures and animal models. Alexi was selected to intern in the laboratory of Ira Daar, who injects proteins into frog embryos and uses fluorescent microscopes to track how these proteins effect the growth and development of the embryo. Emma and Haley were chosen to work in the lab of Yien Che Tsai who studies the function of components of the ubiquitin-proteasome system and their cellular roles under normal and pathological conditions such as cancer, metastasis and apoptosis. Dr. Tsai studies the ways protein regulation contributes to the progression of cancer. Isabella was chosen to work with Dr. Christopher Westlake in the laboratory of Cell Development and Signaling. In this lab she will be investigating how a cell initiates and controls the assembly of cilia using fluorescence and electron microscopy. Dr. Kimberly Klarmann has invited Tess to work in her lab where Tess will be learning about blood cell development, hematology, basic molecular biology and genetic modification. She will be working with genetically modified mouse models and cell line models focusing on the genetic regulation of early blood cell and bone marrow maturation. Katie has been chosen to work for Dr. Bruce Shapiro, whose research deals with basic biological concepts with RNA structure-function relationships, and developing algorithms. Katie will be working with computational and experimental approaches to RNA structural analysis and RNA nanobiology. Broc will be working with Dr. Ronald Miller, in a yet to be determined role. The Biomedical Science program provides unique laboratory experiences that promote the development of advanced laboratory techniques to prepare students for internships in professional laboratories. Each year a number of students in the program are chosen for internships at NCI and USAMRIID. Most of the students continue to work in the laboratories on Fort Detrick throughout college and some choose to begin their research careers there after obtaining a college degree.

Go Kids Go! 2015-2016 Go Kids Go is a Community Service project in conjunction with Rock Creek School. The Local SkillsUSA Officer Team, Class Reps and many technical programs such as Automotive Service, Digital Design and Electricity have dedicated time on making accommodations to the cars to enable disabled students more independent mobility. The renovations include converting the original controls to making them handicap accessible. Students also designed stickers that will personalize each student’s vehicles based on their interests.

Cassie Leach: Culinary Arts The Culinary Arts program catered an event on Friday evening at the Delaplaine Arts Center in downtown Frederick, Maryland. The event was held by Meg Lee, a teacher specialist in Frederick county who wrote a book called “Mindsets for Parents”. Lee, who co-authored the book, was holding this event to thank her friends for their help during the writing process. The entire Culinary Arts class was busy Friday morning and afternoon preparing everything needed for the catering, but one student in particular was very instrumental in helping make this catering happen. Cassandra Leach, a Brunswick High School sophomore, gave up her Friday evening to help Miss Liddick set up the catering and serve the food. This is not the first time that Cassandra has offered up her time after school to help Miss Liddick with a catering event, she has also helped with the FSA in a Culinary Arts fundraiser dinner, the FFA banquet, the carry out meals, and the after school cooking program where she taught local middle school students how to cook various meals. She is such a valuable student not only because she gives her own time after school, but during school she is relied upon by her classmates and even by her teachers. Cassie is extremely creative and motivated in the kitchen and she brings to the table a vegan aspect of cooking and eating that most people are not aware of. A vegan herself, she has a vast knowledge of the subject and shares this information with us on a daily basis. She has plenty to keep her busy after school as she is on the BHS swim team, is in the marching band, works at the Frederick Keys, and works at River and Trail Outfitters. Cassie is also currently working on her Gold Award Project with the Girl Scouts and is focusing on healthier eating and food knowledge for the future. Please stay tuned to hear more about the wonderful things Cassie is doing in Culinary Arts and the community!

In the News

Ryan and I (Brittainy) were lucky enough to be selected to attend the most recent White House Science Fair as honored guests. We had been submitted for consideration because of our involvement in the Real World Design Challenge, and found out in April that we had received the invitation to attend. We travelled to DC on April 13th, and were escorted through several security checkpoints on our way into the White House. We spent the first part of the afternoon examining the huge array of projects that were present. One of the most interesting, we thought, was an underwater robot that was occupying a space on the back lawn. While we were exploring the displays, we ran into a few familiar faces- Bill Nye, the Science Guy and Adam Savage from Mythbusters. We were able to talk and take photos with them both. After a few hours of this, we were taken with the other students for more pictures. They arranged us on a set of risers, where we took photos with President Obama.

L to R: Brittainy, Adam Savage, RyanWhite House Honors-Brittainy Sechler & Ryan Kinzie

He took the time to address the group and, after posing for the pictures, spoke to each of us individually. Because I was at the far left corner of the group, I was the first to speak with the President. He asked my name and where I was from, as well as what project I was representing. He was genuinely friendly to each of us and shook our hands before moving on with his day. After taking the group pictures, Ryan and I were split up. He was allowed back into the fair with the rest of the attendees, where he waited to hear the president’s remarks. Following the trip, he mentioned having the opportunity to chat with a member of the Secret Service while he waited. I, along with several other students, remained separate from the rest of the attendees. We were instead taken to the hall outside of the room where the President would be giving his remarks. We were told that we would be standing on the risers behind the President while he gave the speech. The other students and

I were carefully filed into the room, where hundreds of news cameras lined the walls. Several Secret Service members and other White House employees arranged us on the risers. I was placed in the upper corner, on what would be the President’s right side to a spectator. We were close enough to read his speech over his shoulder as he gave it. Following the remarks, my group was thinned further. Only ten or twelve students remained, and we waited to be escorted to the adjacent executive building. While we waited, I was able to regroup with Ryan. The two of us also regrouped with Mr. Arnold and our parents who, until that point, had not been with us. Mr. Arnold and my father were able to get passes to accompany me to the executive building and

sit in on the discussion that the other students and I would be having with the US Secretary of Education. Our little group was led through the White House, where we bypassed the situation room and the Oval Office. We were then led into a meeting room in the executive building. The other students and I took our seats at the table, and were soon joined by Dr. John King, his assistant, and the President’s Chief Technology Officer. We each introduced ourselves, and then began a discussion on STEM education and minority/female inclusion in STEM. I was lucky to have been able to participate in the discussion. Afterwards, we were escorted out of the building. The three of us regrouped with Ryan and his mother and returned to Frederick.
