    NEWSLETTER VOL 3/2005 (Jul-Sep)

    Rev (Dr) Jeffrey Khoo

Why should we know our Bible-Presbyterian Faith? Dont we know it already? Everymember catechised and baptised in the B-P Church should know why he is B-P, but sadly, this

is sometimes not the case. Some may know it in the head, butnot in the heart. Some know it in name, but not in practice. Some may believe in the B-P Faith, but do not care to defendit. These are the fence-sitters who can smile at both truth anderror. On the Bible issue, the KJV is good, but the NIV, NASB,

TEV, RSV, CEV, ESV etc are also good (maybe even better, their distorted translations, and their underlying corrupt textnotwithstanding).

Will our sons defend the Faith? There is a real need today for Protestantsons to know the Historic Christian Faith not just doctrinally but also polemicallyin the spirit of Jude 3, Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of thecommon salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that yeshould earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.

How we thank God for the 16th Century Protestant Reformation! How wethank God for the brave and godly servants like Luther, Calvin, and Knox whom the Lord had

raised to defend the Faith. Without the Light of the Reformation, we would still be in RomanCatholic darkness and bondage today.

Reformation is unending and ever continuing. We remember the 20th CenturyReformation Movement under Dr Carl McIntire. The B-P Church and all faithful fundamentalistsfought hard and well against modernism, ecumenism and neo-evangelicalism. It was a battle forthe Bible, and the battle was fought and won. The doctrine of Verbal Plenary Inspiration (VPI)has become the orthodox expression of our belief in a totally inerrant and infallible Scripture.

The battle for the Bible continuesinto the 21st Century. Now the battleconcerns the doctrine of the Verbal

Plenary Preservation (VPP) of Scripture.Neo-fundamentalists are denying that theChurch has a perfect Bible today. Theyclaim that the Bible was perfect only in the

past when it was first given, but no longer perfect today. God may have inspired His wordsperfectly, but did not preserve His words perfectly. They teach that Christians do not have all ofGods words today, and even if they do, they cannot be totally sure where the inspired wordsare. There is no tangible Word of God that is infallible and inerrant in every way today. EveryHebrew text is impure, every Greek text is impure, every translation is impure. There is simplyno such thing as a perfect Bible, no such thing as a perfect Written Standard today. If that be

the case, how can we be sure that Christianity is true? If the Bible today contains mistakes, howcan we know for certain that our faith is sure? Faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God (Rom 10:17). But they insist that theWord of God is impure and imperfect today because God did notpreserve His words infallibly. If we do not have an infallible and inerrantScripture today, then is not our faith vain? Are we still not in our sins?Christians are a most miserable lot for sure!

But our Protestant Confessions of Faith since the days of theReformation affirm that our Scriptures have been kept pure in all ages(Westminster Confession, I:8). We have a perfect Bible today, and onthe basis of the doctrine of the specialprovidential preservation ofGods words in the original languages, Christians by the logic of faithcan know for sure where the inspired words today are found or located

    (Heb 11:3, 6).

Despite the sure teaching of Scripture (Ps 12:6-7, Matt 5:18, 24:35), and the cleartestimony of the Protestant Confessions concerning the perfect preservation of Scripture, so-called fundamentalists today say that the perfect preservation of the Holy Scriptures is a new

doctrine. They say that God did not promise that He will preserve His words infallibly to the jotand tittle. Those who teach the 100% perfection of the Bible today are branded as heretics. They accuse those who teach that the Bible is 100% perfect and without any mistakes of beingungodly and unscholarly. The godly and scholarly man today is the one who agrees with theso-called facts and evidences that the Bible today contains some insignificant mistakes, and has built-in redundancies. If asked about whether the Bible today has mistakes or not, thebest that Christians can say today is, There are no mistakes in the Bible that should cause usany worry. According to these neo-fundamentalists, claiming that The Bible has no mistakeswhatsoever, period is extreme and untenable.

If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do (Ps 11:3)?Our foundations are not destroyed and can never be. In my articleIdentifying Our

    Bible-Presbyterian Faithpublished in the 50th

anniversary magazine of Life B-P Church, Iwrote concerning our Roots, our Book, our Lord, our Work, our Hope. But let me restate them inlight of the present battle for the VPP of Scripture.

    (1) Our Roots: The B-P Faith is rooted in the Protestant Reformation and in BiblicalFundamentalism.

Our roots tell us that we need to keep onearnestly contending for the faith which was once

delivered unto the saints (Jude 3). Calvin in the 16th Centuryand McIntire in the 20th Century had their own spiritual anddoctrinal battles to fight, and we have ours (read The

Singapore B-P Church Storyby her founding pastor Rev DrTimothy Tow). In the 21st Century, it is for the perfect

preservation of the Holy Scriptures. The 16 th and 20thCentury Reformation cry of Sola Scriptura(Scriptures

Alone) must ring true even today as we seek to defend

    (2) Our Book: The B-P Faith is anchored solely on the divinely inspired andsupernaturally preserved Word of God.

The Bible in our hands today is not only 100% inspired butalso 100% preserved (Ps 12:6-7, 2 Tim 3:16, 1 Pet 1:23-25). TheBible today is in the 100% inspired and 100% preserved Hebrew

and Greek Scriptures on which the Authorised KJV is based, andnot in the corrupt Westcott and Hort text underlying the inferiormodern English versions. There is only one Bible today (the inspiredand preserved original language Bible), because we have only oneLord. (Read my booksKept Pure in All Ages: Recapturing theAuthorised Version and the Doctrine of Providential Preservation;and KJV Questions and Answers.)

    (3) Our Lord: The B-P Faith believes in a Saviour who is 100% God and 100% Man in onePersonJesus Christthe only living and true God and Saviour of the world.

Our Lord and Saviour who is all-powerful and all-knowingsurely could not have allowed any of His inspired words (not justthe doctrines) to be lost for He had promised to preserve them tothe last iota (Matt 5:18). Our Lord can only tell the truth; Hecannot lie (Rom 3:4). His promises are true and He has kept Hiswords. If this be the case, what then is our duty?

    (4) Our Work: The B-P Faith is a militant faith which separates from all forms of unbeliefand apostasy.

It is the duty of every Christian to believe the Bible anddefend the Bible wholeheartedly and courageously against theinsidious attacks on the Scriptures by neo-evangelicalism whichsays the Bible is imperfectly inspired(no perfect Bible in thepast), and neo-fundamentalism which says the Bible isimperfectly preserved(no perfect Bible in the present).Confusion arises when no clear stand is taken, when lines areblurred. There is a vital need to take a separatist stand and adeclared position for the word of God, and for the testimony ofJesus Christ (Rev 1:9 cf 2 Cor 6:14-7:1, 2 Thess 3:16-14). We

seek Gods approval, not mans. The compromiser is the one who seeks the popular vote. Butone with God is majority! (For a critique of neo-fundamentalism, read my articles, The

Emergence of Neo-Fundamentalism, The Burning Bush[January 2004], and Bob JonesUniversity, Neo-Fundamentalism, and Biblical Preservation, The Burning Bush[July 2005]. It isno surprise that neo-fundamentalists today are prepared to abandon the good name of Biblicalfundamentalism in favour of a rather vague preservationism or paleo-evangelicalism assuggested recently.)

    (5) Our Hope: The B-P Faith believes in the glorious promise that once a Christian issaved, he is always saved.

The God of the Christian Bible who has promised to preserveevery one of His inspired Hebrew and Greek words has alsopromised to preserve every one of His saints who have been

redeemed by the precious blood of Jesus Christ (John 10:27-29, Rom 8:28-39). We reject the mistaken Arminian view that

a Christian can fall into and out of gracesaved at one moment, and unsaved the next. TheLord will never disown His children even when they are sometimes disobedient, For whom theLord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth (Heb 12:6). EveryChristian will surely get to heaven. The Holy Spirit who indwells every believer guarantees it(Eph 1:13-14). (For in-depth study, read Calvins Institutes Abridgedby Rev Dr Timothy Tow.)

We are confident that the foundations of our faith are sure and secure. Our foundationsare none other than the Living Wordour Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ who is the sameyesterday, today and for ever, and the Written Wordthe 100% inspired and 100% preservedHebrew and Greek words of the Reformation Text that are incorruptible, unchangeable, and

forever infallible and inerrant, that form the basis of all faithful translations of the ProtestantReformation.

As Bible-Presbyterians, we are BIBLE first, thenPresbyterians. But certain pastors and presbyters todayoverride the Bible and criticise the Bible they hold in theirhands. The question and challenge of the hour remains:Will history repeat itself? Is this the generation that willsee the downfall of the B-P Church? Will B-P sons denythe Faith, or will they defend the Faith? O Lord, save usfrom the apostasy to come!

Indeed, our God is able to perform Hispromises to the jot and tittle. Not one of the promises in His Word shall fail. God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he notdo it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good? (Num 23:19). All the promises of Godare yea, and in Him Amen (2 Cor 1:20). Abrahams type of faith in Gods Word is sorely lackingtoday. Instead of God says it, I believe it, the call is now Men says it, I believe it. Instead ofright is might, it is now might is right. Carnal methods are brought into churches, makingthem no different from the world! Rather than reverent worship like that portrayed in Revelation4, we have loud sensual music played by bands during service. Jokes are cracked in wildabandon in the pulpit. The flesh-pleasing health and wealth gospel is preached rather than thepure authentic gospel of the cross. No more preaching of sin! No more preaching of earnestly

promoting it. What a wondrous transformation! Indeed how true it is when Paul writes This isa faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to savsinners; of whom I am chief (1 Tim 1:15). To me, the messages and the discussions were a package together. One could not dowithout the other. In addition, I also had the privilege of learning from the different discussiongroup leaders who provoked us to think more and share our thoughts aloud. All theseemphasised the need for us, regenerated Christians who truly love God, to lead a holy andconsecrated life that glorifies and honours God. Oh how needful this message is in this time and

age of ours today! There are enough people who claim to be Christians and yet keepcompromising Gods standards to that of the worlds! Weneed to be shining witnesses for Jesus in this worlddarkened and stained by sensual pleasures andselfishness; we ought to be a sunbeam to those around uswho are caught up in these vain pursuits, yet living in muchsorrow and emptiness. From the camp, God hasstrengthened my convictions and caused me to have newresolutions for Him. For instance, I was dying to watch thelatest cartoon in town Madagascar. To many,

Madagascar is simply a cartoon with wholesome funand laughter, and great for family entertainment. Thank God He reminded me of FCM camp and

I just told myself not to watch any movie, even if it had received raving reviews from peoplearound me.

(II) Night Message: From Youths to Adults: Stepping Stones or Stumbling Blocks? by Eld BoazBoon

Elder Boon gave us a list of 10 stumbling blocks that we ought to watch out for as wewalk through this pilgrims journey, lest we fall by the wayside and stray to the broad way thatwill only lead to destruction. It might seem very daunting for some of us to have to look out for10 of these stumbling blocks which include relationships, pride and slothfulness. However, onsecond thought, it is not as difficult as it seems, if only we fear God and trust in His power andmight to work in us. All these demands placed on us will gradually become second nature to us

as we walk closer to God - sweeter as the years go by. Let it be in our daily prayers to put offthe old man and don the armour of God.

(III) Workshop: Hermeneutics by Rev (Dr) Quek Suan Yew

I was very excited about this workshop because this is really solidstuff. For years, I have been struggling to understand the Word of God as Ido my Quiet Time and prepare Bible studies for my group. Many times, Iwould be asking What does this passage really mean? What is the contextof this passage and many other questions. Studying the Word of God is

really no easy feat. It takes supernatural effort to understand it and that is why the utmostimportance of asking the Spirit to guide and enlighten us, especially since all of us have our ownunique experiences and backgrounds which will cause us to interpret the Bible differently. (IV) Case Studies: Contemporary Issues

This was something new to me. All the campers sat in a circle and after pondering on allthe case studies, we went into a discussion-cum-thrashing. I really appreciated those who werenot afraid to voice out their views, which made the whole discussion even more engaging andthought-provoking. Previously, whenever I had such discussions in my own church, it wasmostly a one-way traffic, with input mostly from the panellists. I thank God for Brother Nelsonfor veering us back to the right direction in regards to all these issues. Now, whenever I make adecision, it is no longer to please man but to please my Lord only, in my dressing to look properand modest, in entertainment to seek neither for worldly standards nor my own pleasure.

There are still many, many thingswhich happened in camp. I enjoyed thefellowship I had with all the campers,

despite knowing most of them for the firsttime in my life. Even though I did notpersonally talk to all of them, I was stillencouraged by the testimonies that all gaveon the last night of the camp. Everyone leftwith a special blessing that God hadreserved for all those that seek Him - Callunto me, and I will answer thee, and shewthee great and mighty things, which thouknowest not (Jer 33:3).

    Camp Testimonies!

    Newcomer!

As a first-timer at an FCM camp, I was initiallyapprehensive about it. I would be living with people whom Ido not know for a good 5 days, no doubt from backgroundsdifferent from mine. Furthermore, having not come from aBP church myself, there would be even more differences.

However, this wariness was watered down after the 5days. We found common ground in our sharing, a hungerand thirst for God's living Word, and had plenty of funtogether. With communion of songs and praises, withgatherings and expositions, with much appreciated latehours of dorm fellowship, I grew closer to brethren in whatcan be considered a very short time.

I personally am impressed with the depth that was covered in the messages, and thequestions raised in the discussions after the messages. The "debate" on controversial issues andpractical faith-living was especially enlightening, bringing up viewpoints that I had never consideredbefore. All in all, I was ministered through the camp by both the people and the programme. Godwilling, I would go for the next FCM camp, and recommend it to my friends.

    Low Boon Siang

FCM Camp 2005 was my very first FCM camp. I was not particularly enthusiastic aboutattending the camp as I just completed a 5-day Physical Education Camp the previous week. Reallythank God for His grace, despite my fatigue and sun-burnt condition.

Frankly speaking, I initially thought that this camp was yet another Christian camp wheretherell be only preaching all day long. After the 1 week of physical burn-out in my PE camp, itsanother week of mental burnout, how am I going to survive? I thought.

Hahahow nave I was! My very first FCM Camp was such a wonderful surprise. Not onlywas I fed with spiritual food by faithful servants of God and sweet fellowship among like-mindedbrethren, I was also greatly encouraged and edified by the discussions we had had throughout thecamp. Even meal times were wisely spent sharing our doubts and having them answered by maturebrethren. Bro Nelson from FEBC was also there to help us with our queries. Good food cumwonderful sharing was indeed a great blessing from God!

I also thank God for knowing many more FCM friends, apart from the usual brethren in FCMNTU/NIE. We had a blessed time of Captains Ball where all of us played our hearts out. FCMers

are terrific sports lovers too! I also thoroughly enjoyed the sweet fellowship and dorm sharing everynight, where the guys came together to sing and share personal struggles in their lives. Indeed, to beable to bear one anothers burdens and pray for one another is a wonderful responsibility of everychild of God. Good times really fly. This 5-day FCM Camp had definitely proved to be my mostenjoyable and edifying camp in my life.

Finally, I will like to encouragethose who are reluctant to join FCM: Thisbiblical ministry is not one dull and lifelessministry. It has helped me in my spiritualwalk and encouraged me in my service forthe Lord, all by the grace of God. And Ibelieve it is able to do the same for you. Icannot deny the many obstacles inattending FCM, due to the insurmountablepressure of school work and worldlytemptations luring us, but God haspromised in His Word, But seek ye firstthe kingdom of God, and hisrighteousness; and all these things shallbe added unto you (Matthew 6:33). Ichallenge you to discover Gods amazingand wondrous blessings yourself!

I thank God for this opportunity to write this testimony regarding the FCM camp. During thelast combined FCM meeting, I was told that Desmond was looking for people to serve in the FCMcamp and I thought that the best way to make full use of my holidays was to serve God in this area.In the camp committee, I was assigned as the games and logistic IC and was also given the task ofcompiling the camp booklet.

Just a few weeks before the camp while

we were halfway through our preparation, mygrandfather was hospitalised after sufferinginjuries from a fall. I thank God for preservinghim throughout his ordeal and also giving me apeace of mind to continue focusing on

completing my tasks for the camp. How oftenwhen we try to serve the Lord, the devil willalways be lurking about, waiting to pounce on usand cause us difficulties. But God is alwaysfaithful to preserve His people to the very end!

Praise the Lord for helping the campcommittee to prepare adequately for the FCMcamp! Truly, the FCM camp has brought many

great spiritual blessings and wonderful fellowship to every camper, more than I had anticipated. Thepreaching of Rev Tan, Rev Quek and Elder Boon has taught us many valuable lessons regardingdifferent issues of our Christian life. The dorm fellowship and group discussions were very edifyingand encouraging as we see how the grace of God was manifested in every individual.

Even though I will not be able to join the FCM camp next year due to my enlistment into theNational Service, I urge everyone to join us again next year for a blessed time of FCM camp!
