So, it’s Easter time and a break is long overdue. We’ve had a busy few weeks here in the FCJ, and
with the upcoming Transition Year trip to Italy, it’s going to be a busy Easter for some too! , From the
Mock Exams, to various sports out-ings, we haven’t stopped (minus the mid-term) since coming back after Christmas. So enjoy the two
week break, eat as much chocolate as you can handle, and make sure you’re well rested for the final term!

College Guest Speakers During the months of February and March, there has been a
number of guest speakers from colleges all over Ireland for the
Leaving Cert Students. There were speakers from colleges like
UCD, LIT, NUI Maynooth, UCC, St Patricks, Thurles. These
gave the students guidance for their college choices and
encouragement for their Leaving Cert. We wish them the best of
luck on their upcoming exams.
La Semaine Francaise Students studying French in FCJ secondary school Bunclody recently
celebrated La Semaine Francaise– French Week (Monday 3rd – Friday
7th March) with many different activities organised by their French
teachers Ms. Nolan, Ms. Kehoe, Ms. Kirwan, Mrs. Wade, Mrs. Morley,
Mrs. Quilter, Ms. Frend and Mr Murphy.
The week began with a viewing of the French film “Les Intouchables” in
the Concert Hall for fourth years.
On Tuesday there was a fantastic display of posters in the entrance hall
for the poster competition. 1st place went to Erin Whelan, 2nd Katie
Sheehan and joint 3rd Kerri O’Leary and Emma Melay. The drama
company “French Theatre for Schools” performed for our 4th and 5th
year students of French. C’était merveilleux!
“Les Boules” took place on Wednesday, which is a very popular French
game.
On Thursday, a French table quiz organised by
4th years was held for the 1st years.
Also throughout the week, French teachers
held a French breakfast for their students to
give them a taste of le cuisine française.
A special merci to all the teachers and students
who helped to organise and run French week.
Vive le France!
GAA Coaching A big thanks to all the students who participate in GAA Coaching. These
students go to primary schools to help coach the younger children and get
them involved in GAA.
ECO-UNESCO Ms. Claire O’Carroll visited A1 and V2 on Wednesday 26th March, and
ran a workshop on Sustainability. All students were actively involved in
discussing the millennium goals and prioritising what they perceived to
be the most important goal. They also looked at the issue of water in the
world and the necessity for all of us to value this commodity. Both classes
presented the speaker with beautiful gifts of potted plants.
Visit of St. Vincent De Paul On Friday 28th of March two representatives of the local
branch of the St .Vincent de Paul Society visited the
school to thank the Student Council for their donation of
€200, given to the charity at Christmas. This money was
raised by a raffle run by the Council. The speakers
explained how this money is used and presented the
school with a certificate to acknowledge their effort.
World Water Day The students of AI marked this important day by
placing posters around the school outlining the
importance of water in our lives. They hoped that
students would appreciate how lucky they were and
they also hope to make them aware of how valuable
water is and the need to respect it. Patrick
O’Toole also spoke to all students on the school PA system. Hopefully
their campaign will have some influence on our behaviour.
Student Council Meeting New Ross On the 6th of March two members Aaron Howlin and Katie Nolan
attended a one day seminar organised by Ramsgrange Community School
to discuss the importance of student councils.
Mr John Wills from Barnardos spoke to them about cyber-bullying and
how it occurs on social networks. Mr. Nathan O’Connor, PRO, Irish
Second Level Students Union, spoke on the role of the student council
and how it empowers students. He also outlined the responsibilities.
After lunch Ms Dalton spoke on how us students should look after our-
selves, mindfulness and leadership. The event was a worthwhile experi-
ence and the students returned to the school enthused with new ideas.

65—10, to become Leinster Champions.
Kangaroo Maths Each year an On-line International Mathematics Challenge for Primary & Post-
Primary Students is held. In Ireland it is run by the KSF-IE (Kangourou sans Fron-
tières Irlande). There are six levels in the competition which is for students aged 7
to 18 years. Ten of our students have been identified by the State Examinations
Commission as High Achievers in Maths in the Junior Certificate examinations in
2011, 2012 or 2013. Therefore, they have been invited by the KSF-IE to participate
in this maths contest commonly called Kangaroo Maths. Well done to the students
and good luck in the competition, which takes place during the week of April 7th –
11th, 2014. In 2013, six million post-primary students from approximately 50
countries participated. Congratulations to our selected students:
Alan Michael Bolger (B.IV), Ferns
Terry Bolt (A. VI), Hacketstown
Cormac Peader Byrne (B.V) , Ballyhogue
Sarah Brigid Byrne (P. VI), Kiltealy
Erika Joan Crawte (C. V), Camolin
William John Deacon (V. VI), Rathnure
Ciaran Patrick Doran (C. IV), Camolin
Orlaith Louise Hickey (B. V), Clonegal
Cathal Lee (P. IV), Ballygarrett
Rachel Sarah O’Dowd (P. V), Camolin
Gold Medal Congratulations to Bob Kavanagh (B.V),
Hacketstown, who participated last year in the Pope John Paul II Award programme in the Diocese of Kildare & Leighlin. He was recently
presented with a Gold Medal for his work with the programme, which included acting as Eucharistic Minister in his parish and working as a volunteer in an Elderly People’s Home. The medal was presented by Bishop Denis Nulty at a ceremony in Carlow. Through the Pope John
Paul II Award, young people in the
Diocese of Kildare and Leighlin are
enabled to take an active part in the life of the Church
and their local community.
Press Pass Award
We are delighted to announce that 4th year student, Edel Creane (P. IV),
Ballyphilip, was shortlisted for the Press Pass 2013 Features Category
Award. At the Presentation Ceremony in the Convention Centre Dublin
on March 27th she was one of 14 students (see photo below) who were
presented with awards by the Minister for Education, Mr. Ruairi Quinn,
T.D. This is a fantastic achievement by Edel given the fact that this is a
national competition covering all of the 26 counties and that over 90% of
Transition Year Schools participated in the programme, ie. over 300
schools and 18,000 students.
Many Congratulations are
due to Edel and her English
teacher, Ms. Sarah O’Hara,
and to the other TY English
teachers, Mr. Tommy Earls
and Ms. Emma Kirwan,
whose students also did very
well in the competition.
Holocaust Survivor On Tuesday, the 4th of February, the 4th Years and 5th Year History students had the privilege of meeting Holocaust Survivor, Mr. Tomi Reichental. He spoke to them of his time in the Bergen-Belsen Concentration Camp where 35 members of his family perished. Mr. Reichental was born in Slovakia and was sent to Bergen-Belsen when he was 8 years old. He survived, along with his mother, brother, aunt and cousin and has lived in Ireland since 1959.
The Irish Holocaust Education Trust facilitates survivors’ visits to second level schools. As the number of witness-
es diminishes, it is of great importance to meet with Holocaust survivors and hear their personal testimony, which prompts listeners to consider the Holocaust and
its consequences, and the wider issues of racism and intolerance.
The sixth year photo is now on sale.
If you wish to have a copy, put 20
euro in an envelope with your name
and class and bring it to the main
office!

Lions Club Christmas Appeal Our school raised €4,536 for the local Lions Club Christmas
Appeal. The money was raised through donations from the families of
students and bag-packing and carol singing at O’Reilly’s Supervalu
Bunclody. The carol singers – the cast of the October musical, “All
Shook Up”, and staff – were under the direction of Mr. Dale Hennessy,
following the school’s Christmas Mass on December 19th. The school
would like to thank Mr. Joe O’Reilly, Ms. Maureen Grennan and all the
staff of Supervalu for the wonderful co-operation and help they received.

Fourth Year Trip to Dublin Zoo
On Thursday 13th of February our year
group visited Dublin zoo. We all got a
short talk about the African animals such
as the lion and the leopard. Everyone got
a chance to see their favourite animal
which was really great. The day was a
great success and a memorable experience! We would like to thank all the
teachers for organising this trip for us.
Personal Safety Workshop On Monday 27th two volunteers
who work at the Wexford Rape
Crisis Centre gave us a workshop
on Personal Safety. We learned how
to protect ourselves from potential-
ly dangerous situations and how to
help a person who is in such a situa-
tion as rape, bullying or sexual
abuse. It was an insightful and very
informative workshop.
Martial arts workshop On Thursday 16th we got a visit
from Ken who is a martial arts in-
structor. He taught us how to de-
fend ourselves if someone was
about to attack us. We even got a
chance to practice our defence
movements on Ken at the end
which was great fun! The experi-
ence was very enjoyable and
worthwhile.
Soar Workshop On Tuesday 25th of February we got a visit from Toni, Mark and Sean .
They began the workshop with some fun games and even some dancing
which made us all enjoy ourselves and relax. They taught us to be our-
selves and to be open about our feelings. The workshop was both inspira-
tional and emotional . We would definitely do it again!
Gaisce Trip On Sunday 30th our year group went on a weekend trip to Glendalough
where we stayed in a nearby hostel for the night. On Sunday we took a
long trek up the treacherous Glendalough. The weather was on our side
and it didn't rain much compared to last years Gaisce trip. We managed to
walk 16 km the first day and then took a well de-
served rest at the hostel. The hostel was great
fun, especially some people. After dinner and a
movie, we headed to bed to be up bright and ear-
ly for the next day. The next day we trekked
9km. A big thank you to Mr Earls, Ms Doherty
and Mr Flynn. Especially for the ice creams on
the way home! Overall it was a great experience.
French Cinema As a way to celebrate French week– La Semaine
Française– the fourth years had the opportunity to watch a
popular subtitled French film called “Les Intouchables”.
This was a heart-warming film about a disabled man and
his lovable carer who build a friendship. It was a great
way to speak French and was very enjoyable.
Drum Workshop We entered the concert hall to find a circle of chairs and a lot
of drums and knew instantly this would be fun. The aim of the
workshop was to get the group to work together. We worked
with different drums and played different rhythms. It was a re-
ally enjoyable and fun day!
Road Safety Trip We went to the Omniplex cinema in March to listen to speakers on Road
Safety. There, we learned a lot about the importance of driving responsi-
bly on our roads for our own safety and the safety of others. Although it
was sometimes very graphic and intense, it opened our eyes to the dan-
gers of reckless driving. It was a worthwhile and educational experience
which we wont forget.
Seachtain na Gaeilge A big thanks to Ms McIvor’s 4th year Irish class who organised an Irish
table quiz for 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th years for Seachtain na Gaeilge. It was
a great success and was a good way to speak our native language.
Go raibh míse buíochas do bainistíocht na scoile a thug urraíocht do na
comórtais ar fad agus a thug tocaíocht do Roinn na Gaeilge.
Workshop This was run by
Smashing Times
Theatre and the
Samaritans. A small scene was played out by an actor from the Smashing
Times theatre which really helped to understand suicide and how mental
health is important in our lives. By asking the volunteers questions, we
learned a lot about the causes and effects of suicide. The workshop fin-
ished off with free wristbands and pens!
Mini-company Competition Well done to Crafty Canvas, Souper and Br-Eco who made it to the X-cel
student enterprise awards in Whites Hotel. This is a competition for the
most successful and creative 4th year mini
companies in Wexford. Congratulations to
Souper who came 3rd overall and to Br-Eco
who won the environmental award. A big
thanks to Mr Flynn, Ms Friend and Ms Kenne-
dy for their work with the Mini Company
I.S.P.C.C Transition year students undertook fundraising on behalf of the ISPCC
last December. They would like to thank, on behalf of the charity, all who
contributed to the collection. A total of €547.55 was raised.
River Slaney Project All fourth years got a chance to be brought down into the River Slaney
for a science project on the cleanliness on the water in the river by Ms. C.
Doyle. We collected water samples from the river bed with buckets and
nets. All three classes really enjoyed the lesson. Even Liz Kavanagh, who
managed to nearly drown. The results proved our river is very very clean!
Sports
U16 Ladies Football It has been an enjoyable and rewarding year but ultimately both teams
were beaten by stronger teams. However, these teams were graded in the
wrong division. Unfortunately, there was not enough of a challenge for
the U16 team before they faced Gallen CS, Ferbane in the Leinster semi-
final in Portlaoise. They had a solid and strong performance but
unfortunately could not counter the driving headwind and the combina-
tion of two of their opponents’ outstanding forwards. Congratulations
guys, you deserve it!
Senior Ladies Football The senior ladies football team played an outstanding match against
Presentation Wexford in the Leinster semi-final. Both teams had a similar
level of ability but the outstanding determination of players like Roisin
Fitzgerald and Michaela Gethings Farrell and the scoring of Clare
O’Rourke and Catherine Kelly meant F.C.J. earned a greatly deserved
win. The Leinster final took place in Bray where the team was playing
against Loreto Navan. We began well but could not compete with the
other team which included eight county players. FCJ played resolutely but
the final outcome was clear. A special congratulations to the goalie,
Sinead Ryan, Raheen, who played an incredible game and was undoubt-
edly the player of the match! Both Gallen and Loreto Navan have gone on
to secure resounding victories in the All-Ireland semi-finals.
Men’s Swimming Leinster Schools
Championship
Congratulations to Eoin
O’Leary, Enniscorthy, Sean Bookey, Knocknaure, JP Farrell,
Enniscorthy and Danny Kehoe, Ferns. Their team won the 200m
Medley Relay and the 200m Freestyle Relay. Also well done to Sean
Bookey who won the 50m Butterfly and the 50m Freestyle.
Ladies Swimming Congratulations to our F.C.J. Bunclody Swim team who had a very suc-
cessful day at the Leinster Schools Swimming Senior Championships in
Donaghmeade on January 21st. The girls relay team, Kate Markey
(Myshall), Aoife Milne (Ferns), Shauna Ryan (Clonegal) and Matilda
Dunne-Cronin (Ferns) won Silver Medals in the 200 metre Freestyle
Relay and also won Bronze in the 200 metre Medley relay. Katie Byrne
(Ardattin) won a silver for her 100m Breaststroke and narrowly missed
out on a bronze in the 100m Backstroke by points of a second. Matilda
won bronze in her 100m Freestyle. Kate, Shauna, Aoife and Adam
Ryan (Clonegal) all improved on their personal times. Well done guys!
Excellent achievement!
Hockey The 2nd year team played five games, beating Presentation Wexford,
drawing with Kilkenny College and St. Leos and, unfortunately, losing by
a goal to Loreto Kilkenny and Newtown Waterford. They are a very hard-
working and enthusiastic group of players and hopefully, next year with
continued hard work they will improve their position in the league
tables! :)
The 1st year team played six games, beating Kilkenny College, Loreto
Kilkenny, Loreto Wexford and Presentation Wexford. They lost narrowly
to St. Leos 3-2 and were beaten by a very strong team, Newtown
Waterford, who went on to win their section of the league. These are a
greatly talented bunch of players and have great potential! :D
Excruciatingly Bad Jokes
What do you get if you pour hot water down a rabbit hole? Hot cross bunnies!
How does the Easter Bunny stay fit? EGG-xercise and HARE-robics!
Why shouldn’t you tell an Easter egg a joke?
It might crack up!
Why did the Easter egg hide? He was a little chicken!
What do you call a rabbit that tells good jokes? A funny bunny!
