About
About
High Temperature Processing Research Group (HiTemp) under Department of Chemical Engineering, UTM has been conducting research and development (R&D) on both microwave application and combustion technology for the last 10 years.
R&D on industrial microwave application was initiated since year 2000. Currently, there are two microwave heating prototypes developed by HiTemp:
10 kW continuous microwave • system; and
12 kW vacuum microwave system. • The microwave prototypes are used for various applications, such as drying of local agricultural produces (i.e. jackfruit, roselle, guava), drying of sludge and sterilization of oil palm and mushroom growing media.
HiTemp also involves in the development of various dimensions of fluidised bed systems utilizing biomass waste (e.g. rice husk, palm shell) and municipal solid waste as fuel. The usage of such waste materials as fuel offers a more realistic approach in dealing with the tremendous increase in solid waste.

About
The utilization of the wastes from agriculture activities such as oil palm biomass (OPB), rice residues and coconut waste residues, and industrial wastes from wastewater treatment plants for adsorbents, corrosion inhibitors and flocculants synthesis has been the thrusts of our WTUR research program over past years. The researches in EMT program have been in the areas of enzymes and cells immobilization in silica materials for degradation of emerging organic pollutants such as pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPPCs) and pesticides that reportedly present in the surface water, ground water and sewage treatment influents.
Most research projects are supported by research grants from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovations (MOSTI), Malaysia and the Ministry of Agriculture (MOA), Malaysia (eScience Research Fund), the ministry of Higher Education (MOHE), Malaysia (ERGS and FRGS) and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (GUP). Other fundings include the ExxonMobil research grant and the Hitachi Foundation. The research projects are carried out mostly by undergraduate and postgraduate students in collaboration with relatedindustry such Petronas, Syarikat Air Johor (SAJ) and Indah Water Konsortium (IWK). The scholarships are available from MOHE and UTM for well-qualified graduate students.
