FCC/FEMA Tips for Emergency Communication When weather-related emergencies strike, it’s important for your safety to be prepared and stay connected: Before an emergency • Know what type of telephone service you have at home since some newer forms will not work without electric power. Traditional landline telephone service usu- ally works during electric power outages but you may need to use a corded phone; many cordless home phones rely on electric power to operate. • If a storm is coming, charge your wireless phone; keep an extra battery and a car charger on hand. Also, charge your laptop or tablet. If your electricity goes out but secure Wi-Fi is available in your community, you may be able to use your com- puter or tablet to go online and send emails. • Broadcasters are an important source of news during emergencies. Keep a battery- operated, solar-powered, or hand-crank-operated radio or portable television for use during power outages. During an emergency • Limit non-emergency phone calls. This will minimize network congestion, free up “space” on the network for emergency communications, and conserve battery power if you are using a wireless phone. If you do need to make a call, try to keep it brief and only convey vital information to emergency personnel and/or family. • Call 911 only for emergencies. Learn and use the designated number in your state for highway accidents or other non-life-threatening incidents. Refer to the inside cover of your KMTelecom telephone directory for additional emergency numbers. • If you do not have electric power in your home and are using your car to charge wireless phones or listen to news on the car radio, be careful. Remain vigilant about carbon monoxide emissions from your car, especially if it is in a closed space. Now that vacation season is here, KMTelecom wants to remind you not to post information on Facebook that could tip off burglars to your absence. People

who are not at all your friends could be actively searching Facebook for keywords to let them know your home is empty and an easy target. This warning is especially true for those of you who have hundreds of Facebook friends, some of whom you accepted as friends without really knowing them.

In your excitement about your vacation, your first impulse may be to share every detail on Facebook (or other social media sites). It’s natural to want to brag a little about how much fun you’re having at the beach, on the cruise, or in the city. But posting this information while you’re gone can make you a target for home burglaries. It’s much smarter and safer to wait until you’re back home to post those vacation photos.

According to FBI statistics, summer is traditionally the season with the most bur-glaries, so it makes sense to be extra vigilant about protecting your property now. In addition to always locking your doors and using appropriate lighting, be cautious with what you reveal on social media.

To reduce your odds of becoming a victim, security experts also suggest that you be particularly careful if you’re a new user of Facebook and want to quickly build up your network. Don’t let this goal get in the way of good judgment when it comes to accepting friend requests. When you get one, check to make sure the person is actually a friend of someone you know personally. In addition, don’t post dates of your upcoming vacation.

Congratulations Chloe BradfordThe Post Bulletin newspaper offers a program called Newspapers in Education. Through this program, area students are offered the “Design An Ad” project. Area businesses spon-sor the project and classrooms are matched up with a business. This year, Mr. Soderberg’s 5th grade class at Kasson-Mantorville Elementary School was given the task of designing an ad for KMTelecom. This project is a great way for students to learn about businesses in their community. Chloe Brandford’s adver-tisement was selected by KMTelecom. Nice job Chloe!

Respect Copyrights and Avoid Digital Piracy

What is digital piracy: Piracy is the act of illegally downloading copyrighted games, music, movies, TV shows, and software that you haven’t paid for. It

is easy to find downloads on the Internet, including file-sharing sites that kids hear about from other kids.

Why it matters: Downloading copyrighted material such as music, movies and games is not just an ethical issue it is illegal under U.S. copyright law. It is also a violation of our Internet Acceptable Use Policy, which can be found on our website at www.kmtel.com/internet/policies/. Beyond the ethical and legal issues is the hefty price tag that many families pay because of downloading copyrighted material. Internet service may be disconnected if we receive a copyright infringement notice that traces back to your Internet connection and the downloaded material is not removed.

Talk to your kids: Remind them that just because it’s easy to download, that doesn’t make it right. Make sure your kids understand that downloading copyrighted mate-rial is not legal and they run the risk of losing their Internet service. Also, illegally downloaded material can expose computers to viruses, malware, spyware, or other unwanted software, all of which can crash your computer and lead to costly computer damage, loss of irreplaceable files, or even identity theft.

Lead by example: Make sure that every program, movie, music track, TV episode, or game that you purchase, download, or stream is authentic and legal. Make sure you abide by the terms that come with the software (called the end-user license agree-ment, or EULA). It sets a great example for your kids and ensures your protection from the pitfalls of piracy.
