8thcenturyBCwiththefoundationof

the Greek city of Rhodes. These

historical events have become the

marks of identity of a modern,

culturally active and generous town

bornof a peaceful co-existencewith

other peoples and civilisations in

whichwe find a source ofpride and

satisfaction.

Roses is set in the Cape of Creus peninsula, one of the largestprotectednaturalreservesin Catalonia.Twomaintypesof landscape

standout:ontheonehand,theartisticgeologicaloutcropswhichare

distributedalongthecoastoftheCapeofCreus(where CapeNorfeu

canbeparticularlyemphasised).Ontheotherhand,therearetheflat

landscapesfilledwithponds,meadowsandriversfromtheAiguamolls

del'Empord,supportingagreatrichnessofbirdlife.

Thisareaoffersthepossibilitytoadmiredifferentkindsoflandscapesand the richnessof its history, hidden behind old stones, fields and

TheoriginsofthecitylieinthecastleofBesal,which

hasbeendatedbacktothe10thCentury.Itwasbuilton

topofthehillwheretheremainsofSantaMarialay,in

the late middle ages. The towns current appearance

doesnotfaithfullyreflectitsoriginalstate,butitgives

aninsightintotownplanninginthemiddleagesandthe

existenceofimportantbuildings: thebridge,themiqv

orJewishbathsthechurchoftheSantPereMonastery,the church of Sant Vicen and the SalaGtica of the

PalaceofCria Reialthat has alovelyterraceviewan

Salvador Dal once said in 1920: "I have spent a

delightful summer, as always, in the perfect and

dreamytownofCadaqus.There,alongsidetheLatinsea,Ihavebeenquenchedbylightandcolour".

Wemeetinthehotellobbyforanextraordinarydayin

magicalCadaqus.

Cadaqus' worldwide fame began with SalvadorDali,whomovedtoahouseinPortLligatandsaidthat

this was the most beautiful town in the world. Dali's

stay in Cadaqus attracted the attention of many

artists,suchasPabloPicasso,AndreBreton,PaulEluard,

ManRay,MaxErnst,MarcelDuchamp,FedericoGarciaLorca,LuisBunuel, andmanyothers.

AttheheadofCadaqusbayrisesthenetworkofnarrowcobbledstreetsandwhitehousesmakinguptheoldtown.Above

theoutlineofthetown,theimageofthechurchofSantaMara,acarefullyrestoredchurchwithawhitefaade,standsout.

9.004.30MeetatthehotellobbyforanotherexcitingpaintingdayinmedievalCastelldEmpries,withitslittlestreetsandsquaresinthecitycentre,thefamousBasilicaandthelovelyviewoftheallotmentsfromthecity.

Thevillage,whichdatesbacktothe9thcentury,becameaflourishingtownduringtheMiddleAges.Sincethenithasbeen

elevatedtothecountycapitalofEmpries.Fromthatperioddatethemostimportantbuildingsandstreetsoftheoldtown

thathavekeptthetraditionalappearance,likeporticoedsquares,thehandicraftsdistrictsandtheCallorJewishquarter,

reminiscencesfromthemedievaltownplanning.

Especiallyworthmentioningis the Terra de Trobadors Festival.Thisevokes thedaysof medievalCastell, both inpopular and cultural aspects (Medieval market, a feast-days parade, talks and troubadour music concerts). The other

importantofferofthemunicipalityofCastelldEmpriesistheextensionoftheNaturalParkofAiguamollsdelEmpord,

with4,78hectares,betweenRodesmountainstothenorthandFluviRivertothesouth.Becauseofitsgeographiclocation

themarsheshasbecomeanimportantstopandrestpointforthousandsofbirdsthatmakelongtravelsofintercontinental

migrationbetweenthenorthof Africa and Europe.Actually,one can observe324speciesof birdsandalmost 80nest

regularly.Thefloraandfaunahereareexceptional.
