Scope
This procedure is aimed to measure the ferrite count (ferrite percentage /ferrite number) in the stainless steel.
Responsibility
Test Lab In-charge / Metallurgist
Apparatus
Fischer Feritescope MP 30
Reference Materials:ASTM E 562
Procedure
A.Test Sample Analysis
1. Calibrate the instrument before initial use to measure the ferrite content inaustenitic and duplex steel according to the magnetic induction method.
2. The calibration should be performed with three standards of austenitic resp.duplex steel with delta ferrite contents of approx. 10 %, 30 % and 80 % aswell as a Fe base marked in equivalent ferrite numbers. The calibrationprocedure is outlined in the specification manual.
3. Locate the area in the testing piece where ferrite count has to be measured.Inspect visually for fissures, which can indicate low ferrite levels.
4. Testing area should be polished to have a smooth and continuous surface.
5. Select the application mode whether ferrite percentage or ferrite number hasto be measured.
6. Bring the probe into contact with the material surface and hold it in placeuntil an audible sound is heard. This should take no longer than threeseconds.

7. Record the ferrite count (FN or %) reading. Perform five successivemeasurements in the same area by lowering the probe perpendicular to thespecimen. Record each measurement.
8. Measurements can be downloaded via installed software to printer andcomputer.
9. Report the statistical evaluation including minimum, maximum and meanvalue, number of measurements, standard deviations.
10.All the measurements should be recorded minimum for three years.
Acceptance criteria
As per ASTM Std. & Customer Specification
