MANAGER’S NOTES

A truly magnificent win by the boys last game saw us progress into the semi finals of the second division cup. Now we switch our attention to the league with a great Ocean Village derby coming up. Boca are in good form right now and it will be a tough battle. We will as always give it our best and try and control and dominate possession. We can not do what we do without your support so make sure you get down to the Victoria and help spur the lads on.

Good evening everyone

It’s much easier writing these notes after an 8-1 victory than following a 7-0 defeat. So having sat through that defeat it was a sheer pleasure to witness our biggest ever win. There was a good crowd, not just ‘Club Chesterton’ but others too. The opposition was not the strongest, and their goalkeeper assisted us on our first two goals, however, the best ever win is the best ever win. So all good. The semi-final is as follows:

Thursday 31 March 19.00 v Gib Phoenix

The sun should be shining for that one so we will come up with a good Club Chesterton event for that. Indeed, ideas are most welcome.

In the other semi-final, Cannons play Europa Point on Wednesday 30th March.

I’m pleased to announce that Chesterton is a sponsor for the forthcoming international matches as well:

Wednesday 23 March TBA v Liechtenstein

Tuesday 29 March TBA v Latvia

There’s a lot of football coming up with a lot of Chesterton exposure.

Meanwhile, tonight we return to the league and although a long shot, second place is quite possible. Hopefully the boys believe that as well and will give it maximum effort. A strong finish to this season will have a positive impact on next season in many ways, attracting players and sponsors.

Thanks for the support everyone—it’s been a good week in the Chesterton camp and the Magpies camp.

The atmosphere was superb as the Magpies faithful who had seen their side lose 7-0 against Premier Division side Glacis (in what was their heaviest ever defeat) were rooting their beloved team on. A strong 50 or so crowd packed the usual Magpie Stand and as the men in black and white began walking out into the pitch a sense of belief inundated them

Fernando DIaz, deputising as Captain for the Magpies walked with the Match Day Mascot out to the middle, the boys were ready to make

amends for their Rock Cup exit; it was now or never!

Magpies looked sharper and attacked with decision and dominated from the kick off. Inside the first 5 minutes a corner taken by Reece Placid found itself into the back of the net after the keeper had a howler, knocking the ball into his own net. Moments later it was further calamity for College 1975 and their keeper as an easy cross turned shot by Mario Espinosa saw the ball sail over the keepers head with Magpies already controlling the score comfortably.

If the first two goals were gifted the third was a well worked move, neat and organised from the back as Sam Whelan raced down the wing in usual fashion and provided a superb cross back for Basque player Asier Calle to comfortably slot the ball into an empty net. Magpies continued in their usual bustling fashion and carved open several more chances before the half time break with Swedish striker Max Bothen and Nick Dembele missing some good opportunities.

The half time break came with Magpies leading 3-0 and in commanding fashion. The "Maggies" could have lifted the pedal of the gas second half but instead went out the second 45 minutes to prove a point. Max Bothen scored his first of the night although College 1975 did pull a goal back as Toni Espinosa's mistake was capitalised and converted. A blip, although minor to say the least as moments later Asier Calle scored his second of the night.

Nick Dembele was subbed before this and Munnsy came on to devastating effect, scoring a goal and providing an assist. Goals 7 and 8 were scored by our very own Zlatan, as Swedish Striker Max Bothen bagged his first hattrick in his short Magpies career.

The Maggies progressed to the next round then with a comfortable win. They will now face Gib Phoenix whilst league leaders Europa Point take on Cannons in the other semi-final.

Second Division Review

Feb 23, 2016

GFA Correspondents at Football Gibraltar round up the latest action from

Gibraltar's Second Division.

Monday evening saw Boca Juniors keep up their fine recent form when they beat Europa Pegasus 3-1. Pegasus did take the lead after 64 minutes through Daniel Navarro Figueroa, but all that did was spark Boca into action. Carl Ramagge equalised after 72 minutes, and a brace from Angel Garcia Vinas ensured a third consecutive win for Boca, who realistically will be aiming to try and keep up that form as they look forward to the 2016-17 season.

A big clash near the top of the table saw Leo's poor form continue as they lost 3-

0 to Gib Phoenix. Leo, who stormed to the top at the start of the season, are now fourth and with every defeat, their hopes of promotion get less likely. Fernando Cuesta's brace, either side of a 60th minute finish from Ismael Tomillero, saw Phoenix wrap up three points.

Wednesday evening saw Red Imps bounce back from disappointment in the cup by beating College 1975 3-1. Goals for Cesar Rosa, Graeme Torrilla and Zhane Consigliero in the first half were pivotal for the Imps, who lost 2-1 to Gib United in the cup last week. College, who face Manchester 62 in the Rock Cup quarter finals, could only get a goal back to make it 2-1 in the 36th minute through Nolan Bosio.

The first of Sunday's double header saw a shock as Europa Pegasus beat Gib Phoenix 3-2. Navarro Figueroa, who scored vs Boca earlier in the week, was the hat-trick hero, as his goals put Pegasus ahead three times in the game. After scoring in the 11th minute, the game remained 1-0 until Fernando Cuesta equalised in the 48th minute. Navarro Figueroa responded eight minutes later, Sanchez Lobato equalised after 65 minutes, but the Pegasus hitman won his team the game 12 minutes from time.

Leo could not fully take advantage of Phoenix's slip up, as they only managed a 1-1 draw against Red Imps. Jeison Cereto Puerta put Leo ahead after just 16 minutes, but the Imps made sure they took four points this week as Julian Lopez equalised after 53 minutes.

After the week's action, eight points separate the top five, with Europa Point remaining unbeaten at the top, only two points ahead of Mons Calpe. With Phoenix having played a game more than the teams around them, both Leo and FCB Magpies could gain ground on them and tighten up the battle for the top spots.

BEST BIRDS

European Football Clubs inspired by feathered friends

From FC Brunos Magpies in Gibraltar to the Bluebirds of Cardiff City AFC, we source the clubs with birds within their nickname

Bluebirds

Cardiff City AFC (ENG) Bluebirds, it should be noted, are not native to South Wales, with the club's nickname deriving from the colour of their shirts and the swallow on their badge.

Blue Pigeons

FK Spartak Zlatibor voda (SRB) The Subotica side were named in honour of the colour of their shirts, the blue-grey shade being known as pigeon blue in Serbia. Local fans liked the symbolism of the common bird too, inspired by the thought of their club flying high in the sky. Incidentally, the team now wear more conventional blue-and-white striped shirts, but the old pigeon blue tone can be seen on their badge and on the flag supporters display in the north side of their home stadium.

Canaries

FC Koper (SLO) FC Nantes (FRA) Fenerbahçe SK (TUR) K. Sint-Truidense VV (BEL) Lillestrøm SK (NOR) Modena FC (ITA) Norwich City FC (ENG) PFC Botev Plovdiv (BUL) A nickname that is almost exclusive to clubs who wear yellow, with Fenerbahçe's nickname, the Yellow Canaries, the only one to acknowledge, albeit tacitly, that not all canaries are yellow. Sparta Rotterdam wear red and white stripes, but have a strong connection with canaries in their native Netherlands, since one fan famously sat behind the goal at every match with one in a birdcage. He later received a royal honour for an act of dedication that may have seen him sectioned elsewhere. Cockerels

Bradford City AFC (ENG) Denizlispor (TUR) Tottenham Hotspur FC (ENG) The Hotspur in Tottenham's name comes from Harry Hotspur, a medieval English nobleman who appears in Shakespeare's Henry IV, Part 1, and was famous for his riding spurs and fighting cocks. Spurs is the club's commonly used nickname, but a cockerel appears on the club's badge – and in a prominent position at White Hart Lane. Turkish side Denizlispor also have a cockerel on their club badge, and are nicknamed the Roosters, while Bradford City are called the Bantams, a cockerel known for its aggression.

Crows

MFK Košice (SVK) The Vraňare are named in honour of the crows that flock around their home town, especially in the city's park. The Crows' nickname is used most often when local clubs take on rivals from nearby Presov (whose football and hockey sides are both nicknamed Koňare – the horses) with Crows v Horses games representing the biggest derbies in eastern Slovakia. CONTQ.

Page 21: FC Brunos Magpies v FC Boca Juniors football programme 28 Feb 2016

21

Doves

APEP Kyperounda FC (CYP) Omonia Aradippou FC (CYP) A symbol of hope, the Dove appears on the Cyprus national team badge, and is also an important symbol for two of the country's clubs. APEP's emblem shows a dove carrying an envelope, while Omonia Aradippou's badge features two doves, which is also the club's nickname.

Eagles

Beşiktaş JK (TUR) Crystal Palace FC (ENG) Eintracht Frankfurt (GER) FC Argeş Piţesti (ROU) FC Banants (ARM) FC Milsami-Ursidos Orhei (MDA) Ferencvárosi TC (HUN) Go Ahead Eagles (NED) ND Triglav (SVN) Neath FC (WAL) OGC Nice (FRA) PFC Pirin Blagoevgrad (BUL) PFC Ludogorets Razgrad (BUL) SL Benfica (POR) S.S. Lazio (ITA) US Città di Palermo (ITA) Vitesse (NED)

By far the most popular European bird in footballing terms, a host of clubs have a tradition of allowing a live eagle to fly around their stadiums before each home game; Lazio (whose eagle is called Olimpia), Benfica (Vitória), Crystal Palace (Kayla), Eintracht (Attila) and Vitesse (Hertog II – literally, duke the second, with the first duke having died). The list above includes the Black Eagles of Beşiktaş, the Green Eagles of Ferencváros, the Little Eagles of Pirin Blagoevgrad, the Violet Eagles of Argeş Piţesti and the Eaglets of Nice. Meanwhile, Eintracht took eagle worship to a new level a few years back when coach Klaus Toppmöller brought a live eagle into the dressing room to inspire his players. Albania's KS Luftetari were once called KS Shqiponja – shqiponja being Albanian for eagle.

Falcons

FC Sokol Saratov (RUS) Gaziantepspor (TUR) PFC Spartak Varna (BUL) Valur Rejkjavík (ISL) There are a few falcons around, but our favourites come from Iceland, with Valur being the local word for falcon. The name came about when the group of local boys responsible for forming the team saw a falcon flying when they were discussing names for the new club. Interestingly, Fridrik Fridriksson, one of the club's founders in 1911, established a second club, Haukur, in Hafnarfjordur, whose name means literally hawk.

Magpies

FC Brunos Magpies (GIB) Newcastle United FC (ENG) Notts County FC (ENG) Both of England's Magpies are so named because they wear black-and-white shirts, with two magpies also appearing on the badge of Notts County, the world's oldest professional football club.

Mallards

Ballinamallard United FC (NIR) The Northern Irish club are nicknamed in honour of the duck that appears in the name of their home town – Ballinamallard, incidentally, means 'ford-mouth of the curses' and actually has nothing to do with mallards.

Owls

Sheffield Wednesday FC (ENG) İstanbul BB SK (TUR) Wednesday's nickname is a derivation of their former home at the Owlerton Stadium. Oldham Athletic FC also have an owl on their badge (a derivation of the name of their home town), and so once did Leeds United AFC, though this was removed in the 1970s. İstanbul BB are the Grey Owls. The most famous footballing owl was the giant eagle owl that briefly interrupted Finland's 2-0 UEFA EURO 2008 qualifying win against Belgium, swooping into the Helsinki Olympic Stadium and perching on the crossbar.

Parakeets

RCD Espanyol (ESP) The origin of Los Periquitos's nickname is obscure. One theory is that parakeets gathered around the club's old Estadio de Sarriá home where fans would feed them birdseed before games. A more exciting theory suggests that, back in the 1920s, Catalan satirist Valentí Castanys referred to followers of the team as "the four black cats" (cuatro gatos – meaning, hardly anyone) highlighting the size of their crowds relative to those of their neighbours, FC Barcelona. The popular cartoon character Felix the Cat ('gat perequito' in Catalan) got mixed up with that joke, perequito became periquito, and the rest is history.

Peacocks

Hibernians FC (MLT) Hibernians are the Peacocks, since the bird features in the coat of arms of their home town, Paola. England's Leeds United were once Peacocks too, because they played near the city's Old Peacock pub. Robins

Bristol City FC (ENG) Newtown AFC (WAL) Bristol City were named because their red shirts and white shorts resemble the plumage of a robin.

Seagulls

Brighton & Hove Albion FC (ENG) FK Haugesund (NOR) Víkingur (FRO) Brighton and Haugesund are Seagulls, while Víkingur are occasionally called the Young Gulls. They were formed by the merger of LÍF Leirvík and GÍ Gøta, who were called the Young Gulls (Skurarnir) in honour of the village of Gota's rowing boat, which bore the same name. Feyenoord, incidentally, have had a seagull in their club museum. On 15 November 1970, goalkeeper Eddy Treijtel managed to inadvertently kill the bird, hitting it with the ball while clearing his lines with a kick. Song Thrushes

West Bromwich Albion FC (ENG) Now more commonly known as the Baggies, West Brom were originally known as the Throstles – the local name for song thrushes, which nested in abundance around their home stadium, The Hawthorns.

Storks

ADO Den Haag (NED) Storks were once common in the Hague, and have been the symbol of the city since the 1500s, explaining why they also appear on the club's badge. Swallows

Brescia Calcio (ITA) The Serie B side are called the Rondinelle (little swallows) because of the white v-shape in their blue shirts.

SwiftsDungannon Swifts FC (NIR) Founded in 1949, the Northern Irish club have the small swallow-like bird in their name and on their crest. Swans

HB Køge (DEN) Swansea City FC (ENG) Swansea were Europe's only Swans until HB Køge were founded in 2009 with the merger of Herfølge BK and Køge BK. The club's marketing and event manager Brian Romme, who designed the new club's logo, told UEFA.com: "We chose the swan as our symbol for three reasons, the first being that we wanted to build the first carbon neutral stadium in Denmark – which we have not achieved yet – and the swan is the Nordic symbol for taking care of the environment. The second was an ambition to develop from being an ugly duckling into a beautiful swan, like in the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale. And the third one was that the swan is Denmark's official national bird." Woodpeckers

Ascoli Calcio 1898 (ITA) According to legend, the club's home city of Ascoli Piceno was founded by Sabine tribesfolk, who were led westward from central Italy by a woodpecker. Alternatively, the Piceni tribe had a woodpecker as their totem. Either way, Il Picchio (the woodpecker) is what Ascoli fans call the club.
