this edition

On behalf of the entire FC Business Solutions team, Merry Christmas. Thank you all for making 2012 such an outstanding and memorable year for our humble little brand.

Suffice to say it’s been another monstrous year for FC Business Solutions. Whilst others in the franchising sector have been ‘taking stock’ and ‘consolidating’, we have been working hard to continue to look for and introduce opportunities that meet the needs of everyone in the sector. Our team has grown from four to 10 in just two years and we have added a number of service offerings to our suite. We launched 2012 with an Events and Conference Management division, headed by Amanda Callaway – we have managed two major events and two franchise conferences in 2012, with a number of conferences locked away for 2013. We have been able to take our Franchise Health Check program all over Australia, assisting start-up and existing frachise businesses. This has been driven by Gary Carter. We are really looking forward to launching two new exciting franchise concepts to the Ausatralian market in 2013. Our PR & Marketing Division continues to grow from strength to strength, Louise Mitchell, former Business Franchise Editor, doing a wonderful job with Andrew. Michael Sheedy continues to drive executive recruitment and business development and Jessie Caudry was promoted to the role of Franchise Support Systems Specialist, building Induction Programs and Operations Manuals. Carmen LoMonaco is our newest addition, joining us as General Manager of Systems and Compliance. Kim Annesley has been sensational working with two iconic Australian brands in Forty Winks and Jim’s Group, achieving applaudable results for both groups. And, to top this all off, FC Business Solutions was crowned 2012 National FCA Supplier of the Year.

We certainly don’t see this is the pinnacle for us – it was great recognition for a lot of hard work by everyone in the team. However, without you, our clients, colleagues, support network and friends, we couldn’t have achieved any of this. Thank you all for your ongoing support of our brand. We extend warm and sincere best wishes to you and your families this festive season and look forward to working with you all in 2013.

CORINA VUCIC

Director - FC Buisness Solutions

In February this year, FC Business Solutions launched a Conference and Events division, headed-up by Amanda Callaway (pictured). We managed a number of conferences and events this year, including the Quest Serviced Apartments National Conference on the Gold Coast in August. The Conference was stamped the ‘best ever’ by the franchisor and franchisees.

TMP (Team Management Profiles) has been a wonderful initiative of FC Business Solutions in the past couple of years and we have worked with a number of clients in 2012 to bring engagement, excitement, fun and learning to their group meetings, conferences or team building days. Clients in 2012 have included Jim’s Mowing, Jim’s Pools, Jim’s Test & Tag, Quest Serviced Apartments, United Tools (pictured), X-Golf, 3-Fold Resources and Healthy Habits.

FC Business Solutions has been managing the Public Relations for Jim’s Group for the past two years. Without question, Jim Penman is an Australian icon in Franchising. A shy, unassuming and extremely creative business man, Jim Penman is widely misrepresented in the Australian community. The PR team at FC Business Solutions ensured that 2012 was the year that his true story was told, via national publication, BRW. It was a 7-page feature, starting with the front cover (pictured).

FC Business Solutions is making a habit of bringing new and exciting opportunities to the franchise sector.

The ideas from the extremely creative team at FC Business Solutions always begin with the same question – how is this initiative going to benefit both franchisors and franchisees?

In these tough economic times, the bottom line is all important, however, so is ensuring you maintain your position ahead of the pack.

How can you possibly achieve both?

We have launched a new Executive Recruitment Model based on hours spent searching for and placing the right candidate for your business.

At FC Business Solutions, we have done away with the traditional recruitment models that see anywhere between 8-15% of the candidate’s annual salary being charged to the client as a fee.

The reason we can do this?

We know franchising! FC Business Solutions is all about Relationships and Results.

We are in a great position to find you the right candidate as a result of being diligent and continuing to build our databases of quality candidates across a number of professional services.

Although it may not happen every time, chances are that we have the right person on our database to fill the role you are looking for. We will have their resume, will have conducted at least an initial interview and know what their current employment situation is.

We can move swiftly and diligently to fill your role and invoice you only for the time spent filling the role for you.

This will provide incredible savings.

More importantly, it takes the pressure off your management team to go through the recruitment process.

FC Business Solutions continues to ‘blow away’ its clients at conferences, events, team building days, discovery sessions and management meetings with TMP – Team Management Profiles.

Since launching TMP at the beginning of 2010, FC Business Solutions has delivered TMP Workshops to more than 5000 individuals across more than 70 franchised and non-franchised businesses across Australia. The TMP Report delivered at the workshops help individuals understand why they work the way they do, as well as develop strategies for improving how to best work with others.

The large majority of the workshops we have conducted have qualified for subsidised funding for the client.

TMP is recognised as the foremost integrated system of work-based, research-proven assessments and feedback instruments, worldwide.

It focuses on identifying and understanding key work elements, explaining why some individuals, teams, and organisations perform, work effectively and achieve their objectives, while others fail.

At its core, TMP offers you and your organisation research-proven assessments that reveal critical dynamics to enable the development of high-performance in the workplace. Contact Michael Sheedy on 0423 057 566 to discuss running TMP sessions in your business and whether your business qualifies for the funded training.

“It’s this internal drive to engage, empower and satisfy that led me to want to lead the way to grow and nurture the many outstanding women in the franchising sector.

“I have been an active member of FCA Women in Franchising committee, as well as Barry Plant Professional Women in Real Estate and Monash Women’s Business Network.

“These forums are a wonderful way to connect women through networking events, assit to mentor and help drive women to achieve their goals. Corina said she was passionate and committed to the franchising sector.

“I am passionate about it and the opportunities it can provide to a diverse range of people. This is why I have set up and invested heavily in FC Business Solutions to help Australian franchise systems across the board prosper and grow in all areas of their business.

ACHIEVING GREAT PR FOR OUR CLIENTS

FC Business Solutions has once again been able to achieve outstanding results for its clients across a range of Public Relations, Communications and Marketing platforms.

Creating Promotional DVDs, Franchise Information Packs, Marketing Packs, websites, promotional photo shoots, marketing plans, advertising plans, communications plans, and public relations plans are all in a day’s work for the PR-Marketing team.

At FC Business Solutions, we continue to battle the fact that franchise businesses see PR and Communications as a ‘nice to have’.

This attitude never ceases to amaze. As a franchisor, wouldn’t it be in the best interests of your franchisees to ensure optimum communication, local area marketing support and brand exposure?

In a bid to attract your next franchisee, would you want to stand out from the other 1000 franchise systems in Australia trying to attract the same franchisee?

Every day, hundreds of so-called experts are quoted in the newspapers, on the radio, on websites and on our television screens at NO CHARGE. Yet advertising in these same media costs thousands of dollars.

We never seem to question the budget line for advertising expenses, yet we often balk at adding a line for public relations and communications in our overall marketing plans and budgets.

FC Business Solutions has once again been able to achieve outstanding results for its clients across a range of Public Relations, Communications and Marketing platforms.

FC Business Solutions, Jim’s Mowing, Movember and Avalon Airport teamed up to create a world first last month. The world’s biggest moustache, which took two days to create, featured on Channel 10 (pictured), as well as Channel 7. A video was also launched on You Tube worldwide and there was also print media that covered the event.

Barry Plant Group has enjoyed sensational coverage in 2012, featuring on the front cover of Real Estate Business Magazine, as well as featuring consistently throughout the Leader Newspaper Group, Herald Sun and The Age. This is a result of an 18-month strategic public relations plan built to increase the profile of Director and CEO, Mike McCarthy, as well as the Barry Plant brand. FC Business Solutions has achieved more than $600,000 in PR for Barry Plant Group in 2012.

ACHIEVING GREAT PR FOR OUR CLIENTSNo matter what your business, you’re selling an image of yourself, your products and your services. Public Relations plays a major role in managing that image.

Free publicity leads to more sales, brand awareness, strategic alliances, and so on. Making headlines is the greatest and fastest way to make people want to do business with you.

Like the rest of your marketing plan, launching a PR campaign will require planning. If a strategic plan and approach is put into place, then the outcome will almost always be positive. The spin-off of greater visibility can have an impact in many areas of the business.

FC Business Solutions has once again been able to achieve outstanding results for its clients across a range of Public Relations, Communications and Marketing platforms.

bRAziliAn butteRflY FC Business Solutions was able to manage a Media Stunt with the support of 101.9 Fox FM, which kicked-off on the Melbourne Cup weekend. Brazilian Butterfly received outstanding national coverage on the Jules (Lund) and Fifi (Box) drive time radio program. The segment began at 5pm and concluded at 6pm. The segment was promoted 24 hours prior to going to air. Then Fox FM went into overdrive with people wanting to view the video of the event online, which again was exceptional branding for Brazilian Butterfly.

FC Business Solutions built a PR Strategy for the Jim’s Group to capitalise on the fantastic initiatives happening within the group, improve the public profile of Jim Penman and support the 30-plus divisions and 250-plus franchisors within Australia’s largest franchise network. Sponsorship management of Movember was also part of the strategy. Jim’s Divisions have enjoyed wonderful coverage in print media throughout Australia, while Jim Penman featured throughout a seven page spread in BRW. FC Business Solutions also media coached Jim through a crisis, where a TV Current Affair Program was looking to exploit him in relation to the alleged unfair dismissal of Jim’s sister. Jim came through the interview in the way that he deserved – honorable and sincere. The feedback from his network was outstanding. FC Business Solutions has secured more than $750,000 in PR for Jim’s Group in the past two years.

A Conference is more than a group of franchisees and franchisor staff getting together to celebrate another year in business.

Conferences are about bonding, engagement, empowerment, learning and strategic planning.

In franchising, what we see far too often is franchisors putting together conference programs

that suit only their own needs and objectives. What about the franchisees? What do we want them to get out of a conference?

What we need to do is start practicing what we preach - “A franchise system is only as healthy as the franchisees who represent the brand”.

A conference can kick start the next 12 months for your brand in an exciting fashion.

The franchisor is obviously going to want to achieve certain outcomes from the conference; however, every one of those outcomes should be focussed towards bonding, engagement, empowerment, learning and strategic planning for franchisees.

There are many roads to take to ascertain the needs of franchisees at a conference.

From our perspective, ensuring franchisee representatives are

involved in the initial planning and brainstroming is a fantastic way to start. The obvious choice here are members of the FAC (Franchise Advisory Council).

We recently managed a conference for Quest Serviced Apartments and began the planning process with a workshop at its FAC Meeting.

Representatives from every state were able to have input into the conference program, sharing information in terms of what had worked and not worked in the past and what the priorities were in terms of delivering a meaningful conference in 2012.

Two representatives from the FAC then volunteered to be part of the 2012 Conference Committee, ensuring that FAC discussions maintained momentum throughout the conference planning process.

The result of this never done

before consultative approach was the best conference ever in the group’s history.

The franchisor was able to deliver a conference that met the expectations of its franchisees, while ensuring they achieved the outcomes they were looking for.

Franchisees were able to head back to their properties engaged, inspired and invigorated. They bonded with fellow franchisees, suppliers and head office staff, took away some great learning outcomes and had plenty to start planning for to ensure a successful next 12 months.

Most importantly, everyone involved looks forward to the next conference in 12 months time.

“A franchise system is only as healthy as the franchisees who

represent the brand”.

Page 9: FC BizConnect Dec 2012

9 fcbizconnect

soMe KeY consiDeRAtions WHen PlAnninG A confeRenceListen to everyone’s needs❶ First and foremost, understand what the conference objectives are and what the desired outcome is. Understanding the feedback from delegates from the last conference and working with franchisee representatives to address these for the next conference is a wonderful start.

❷ Know your audience. Age brackets, male to female ratios, professional knowledge (new or seasoned franchisees), what they do well generally as a group and what they may struggle with. These points factor majorly on any conference.

❸ Be fully aware of your budget. Maximise the opportunities with the budget you have.

the ProgrAm❶ Relevance, relevance, relevance. Too much of a good thing can be a bad thing. For example, we all know that the economy is on everybody’s mind right now but too many economists at one conference can end up sounding all the same by the end of it! It is imperative that we go back to the basics and not try and over complicate things.

How, as the event managers, are we going to achieve bonding, engagement, empowerment, learning and strategic planning outcomes for the franchisees?

❷ Don’t be afraid to pick the best of the best of your franchisees and allow them to drive some key outcomes. Franchisees will respond much better to their peers, telling them the rights and the wrongs, than they will a head office person.

venue, Food And BeverAge❶ This might not seem important but it tends to be the most ‘talked about’ aspect of any conference from a franchisee perspective. There’s nothing worse than a bad venue and suffering average food for three days!! Delegates are far more savvy now days and the traditional chicken/beef/chicken/beef at dinner just won’t do. Neither will the usual sushi rolls and mini quiches at cocktail parties.

Consider An event mAnAgerBy outsourcing your conference, it achieves the following:

❶ It frees up the internal staff and franchisees to focus on what they do best day to day. It also allows them to truly enjoy the engagement of the conference and to be part of the event.

❷ Timing: If there’s one thing an experienced Event Manager knows, it’s the importance of timing. Having things run on time allows the general feeling within the conference of being relaxed and not rushed. A recurring comment at our conferences is how nice it is to have everything run on time.

❸ The 2012 Quest Conference was far more focussed on learning and networking in a professional environment than having a few speakers and getting dressed up in fancy dress and going to dinner.

❹ Creativity: Having experience across a number of franchise groups and events ensures that an event manager brings wonderful, real ideas to the planning table.

❺ Access: At no time is an event manager not available to the client. Phone calls late at night (or at times very early in the morning), meetings on the weekends etc.

“A Conference is more than a group of franchisees and franchisor staff getting together to celebrate another year in business. Conferences are about bonding, engagement, empowerment, learning and strategic planning. In franchising, what we see far too often is franchisors putting together conference programs that suit only their own needs and objectives.”
