Hi everyone,

Following the recent introduction to Facebook’s new Groups feature, I will use Debbie to discuss why these groups do not address the “biggest problem in social networking”, but actually create an even bigger one.

All comments are welcome.

Hi, I’m Debbie.

Recently, Facebook introduced its new Groups feature to solve the “biggest social networking problem.”

“The biggest problem in social networking is helping you

easily interact with your friends and share information in

lots of different contexts.”

My friends!

Private space!

“[Groups] is a simple way to stay up to date with small groups

of your friends and to share things with only them in a

private space.”

“For example, you might want to share photos from a family

vacation with just your family…”

Perfect timing!

I just came back from vacation with my parents, my brother and my sister.

Using Facebook’s Groups, I created my Family group where I added my brother, my sister and my parentsin order to share our vacation photos.

My brother decided to share my sunbathing photos by adding his friends in the group…

… who then added school friends from where I teach.

This morning, I found out that my Family group is now filled with strangers and that my photos are all over school.

My friends?

Private space? Yeah right!

What is wrong with

Facebook’s Groups?

Let’s consider some of my real life social circles.

Following Facebook’s instructions, I create a group for each of my social circles in order to share with my contacts.

Now my contacts add each other in my circles because many of them are “friends”.

As a consequence, my audiences mix up. I lose control over my privacy and my image.

In turn, my contacts add their contacts into my groups.

Strangers or people I do not want to be associated with suddenly appear in “my” social circles overnight. All this without my consent!

To make things even worse, everybody can view my content before I can take any actions.

As my group mates keep adding their friends into mysocial circles,…

… my circles become one big group with no privacy.

I have no choice but to revert to wearing a distilled and politically correct image for everyone. My circles are simply gone.

While we struggle to keep boundaries between our social circles to separate our various types of contacts and the various levels of trust in our relationships…

… Facebook’s Groups strive to break these boundaries down, forcing us to share with our contacts with the same level of trust and to adopt a bland personality.

Page 25: FB's New Groups

Simply put, with New Groups, Facebook is merging everyone’s social circles to create a fully open world, with no privacy nor real identity.

Page 26: FB's New Groups

Isn’t it Facebook’s vision?

“… to make the world more open

and connected.”

I need more. Much more.

My social life is much more

complex and diverse than what

Facebook offers me.
