the publicschools. Aninvestigation whichwas institutedby theBoard

revealed thatthe families involved weremembers otthiscult andthat

the childrenmissing fromthe schoolswereattending the Universityoi

Islam, s school whichhad beenestahlished bythe cult. An immediateexamination odthe school was made, and it revealed that the "curriculum,

thsteaching staff,and theequipment wereentirely inadequateto aiiord

even most rudimentaryeducation iorthe coloredchildren whowere

attending. Notonly wastheschoolinadequate, but thesubject matter

which wastaught appearedto beoi afantastic nature quiteoutside the

oi life." Attempts whichweremade to close the school by the

enforcement ofthe" schoolattendance lawsresulted instrengthening the

resistanceatthe cult, causing it and the schooltooperate in secrecy. A

$1 decision of the Board resolved to retrain from rigid eniorcement of

the attendance laws and to assist "in adjusting the underlying economic

B. Protection oi Elijah Muhammad

Elaborate security protection is afforded Elijah Muhammad at all

times. Much oi this protection is undoubtedly ceremonial or ritualistic "

evidence oi the respectMuhammad's followers hold for him. Nevertheless, . -

during1958, a threat was reportedly made against the liie of Elijah Muhammad.

Thiscaused much concern among cult members even though the threat never

materialized. Also, during the Bummer of 1059, J. B. Btoner, head 0! the

Christian Knights oi the K. K. K. ,wrote aletter to Muhammad which

was full 0! invective. At the same time, Btoner wrote another letter to the

Few York City Police Commissioner which offered the services oi the
