Prof Gerry SwanDean: Faculty of Veterinary Science

Message from the DeanVeterinary Science is a biomedical science, which serves the health interests of farm animals, companion animals, wildlife and humans alike. As such, it deals with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of animal diseases, the production of safe food, and, through the control of diseases transmitted from animals to humans, the health of human beings.

The Faculty of Veterinary Science at the University of Pretoria was established in 1920 and is a national asset. It is the only faculty of its kind in South Africa and the second oldest of the 46 veterinary faculties in Africa. Its undergraduate BVSc degree is formally accepted in the UK, Australasia and Malaysia for registration purposes to practise in those countries. The quality of the training is of such a standard that graduates from this Faculty have no difficulty competing for and entering postgraduate programmes in universities in any country in the world. Its graduates are partners in or principals of private practices, and occupy managerial positions in industry and public service across the world. The Faculty also offers an undergraduate diploma programme in veterinary nursing and is a leader with regard to training and service delivery.

We are proud of the fact that we also focus on the development of the student as a human being to enable

Veterinary Science (BVSc)The BVSc programme is offered only by the Faculty of Veterinary Science of the University of Pretoria at the Onderstepoort Campus on a full-time basis. The language of tuition in this Faculty is English. A well-developed student support system is in place, including mentoring, tutoring, didactic support, and medical and psychological counselling.

Current programme

The BVSc degree is a four-year advanced bachelor’s degree. It requires the completion of, and follows on, a directed custom-made three-year BSc(Veterinary Biology) degree offered by the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences of the University of Pretoria. The Faculty of Veterinary Science is also involved in the delivery of the programme.

Due to changes in the degree structure (see below), the BSc(Veterinary Biology) degree programme will be phased out over time. This will commence in 2010 when there will be no first-year intake into this programme. Students who were accepted in 2009 for admission to the first year of this programme in 2010 will be required to register for BSc(Biological Sciences) I – which is essentially the same as BSc(Veterinary Biology) I – in 2010 (see below).

Students who registered for BSc(Veterinary Biology) I and II in 2009 and 2010, respectively, will be required to complete the existing double degree programme with selection at the end of 2009 and 2010 for admission to BSc(Veterinary Biology) III in 2010 and 2011, after which they will be required to complete the existing four-year BVSc degree programme for qualification at the end of 2014 and 2015 respectively.

New programme

A core-elective six-year single-degree structure has been developed to replace the existing double degree programme described above with effect from 2011.

The core-elective programme is an internationally recognised and recommended approach in which all candidates will complete a core curriculum over four-and-a half years (nine semesters). They will then complete a chosen elective over the next four months, which will give them increased competencies to enter the profession in their chosen career paths. The training will be concluded with approximately 14 months of experiential training in the core and chosen elective components. The first year of the new programme will be presented on the Hatfield Campus; the remaining years will be presented on the Onderstepoort Campus.

Students who were admitted to the BSc(Biological Sciences) degree programme in 2010 had to apply for admission to BVSc by 30 June 2010. These students were considered for admission to BVSc I in 2011 at the end of 2010 in accordance with an approved selection policy. Ample opportunity was created for them, as most of the

Admission requirements

places available in the programme in 2011 were assigned to these first-year students in this cycle. This will obviously change in subsequent years.

Selected students will qualify for exemption from the first-year subjects they have already completed, but will have to register for additional subjects in 2011 to retain their ad-mission to BVSc II in 2012. These BVSc subjects will be presented on the Hatfield Campus:• Medical Terminology (in the first semester)• Introductory Animal Science (in the second semester)• Introductory Animal Nutrition (in the second semester) • Professional Life (in the second semester)

If their timetables permit, they may also be able to do second-year subjects presented by the Faculty of Natural and Agri-cultural Sciences that are required in the veterinary science programme, and obtain exemption from these in the follow-ing year. These students will graduate in 2016 at the earliest. This implies that this first batch of students will still be re-quired to complete the degree programme over seven years.

Students who completed the National Senior Certificate (NSC) in 2010 were not considered for admission to BVSc I in 2011, but will be considered together with the 2011 cohort for admission to BVSc I in 2012. They may seek admission to BSc(Biological Sciences) in 2011 and then apply for admission to BVSc in 2012.

Students who registered for the first time in the extended programme in 2010 may gain admission to BVSc I in the middle of 2011 after selection, provided that they have passed all the modules by that time. They will then be required to complete the second semester of the first year for promotion to BVSc II in 2012. This route will apply annually thereafter.

Admission requirements for 2011

1. Completed first year of BSc(Biological Sciences)2. Completed third semester of the BSc Four Year

Programme3. International candidates with appropriate tertiary

exposure

Due to changes in the degree programme, school leavers who complete the NSC in 2010 will not be considered for admission in 2011. They will be considered together with the 2011 cohort for 2012 – these applications will close on 30 June 2011. Please also consult the admission requirements for BSc(Biological Sciences) as an alternative option as well as the Faculty Brochure: Natural and Agricultural Sciences.

Admission requirements for 2012

A valid NSC with admission for degree purposes will be required from all school leavers who do not have tertiary experience. The Admission Point Score (APS) is calculated from the achievement levels obtained in the six 20-credit subjects of the NSC.

Alternative routes to take when failing to meet the requirements in the table below:

A candidate should write an Institutional Proficiency Test for admission to the University of Pretoria BSc Four Year Programme.

For matriculation exemption, please refer to p 12.

Selection of applicants

A total of 140 students will be admitted to the programme.

The Faculty endeavours to meet the veterinary needs of the country and the specific requirements of higher education legislation through the selection of applicants. The recruitment and selection process is therefore structured in such a way that it reflects national demographics and government policy.

The procedure will be reviewed on an annual basis, and makes provision for the following categories of students:

• School leavers• Students with tertiary exposure• International students

Selection will be based on academic performance, the Institutional Proficiency Test and an interview as required. A limited number of international students may be admitted to the programme. Equivalency of academic credits will be taken into account. Once applicants have been accepted for this programme, they will receive a letter of acceptance from the University, which will facilitate their application for a study permit. A valid study permit, obtained in the country of origin, is a prerequisite for registration.

A graduate who has completed the degree programme will have received broad-based training with an expanding elective programme to cater for specific interests. It will also enable the holder to enter a number of postgraduate study programmes, as listed on the next page. Upon conference of the BVSc degree, the new graduate is entitled to register with the South African Veterinary Council (SAVC) as a veterinarian. Registration with the SAVC is a prerequisite for practising as a veterinarian in South Africa.

Career opportunities

Career opportunities in Veterinary Science

Veterinary science offers rewarding and wide-ranging employment opportunities for the new graduate.

• Privatepractice

The majority of veterinarians in the country are gainfully employed in private practice, either in their own practice, in partnership, as an assistant or as a locum.

There are several avenues of private practice: rural practice, providing veterinary services to the livestock farmer (cattle, horses, sheep, goats, pigs, poultry and game), companion animal practice (dogs, cats, horses, cage birds, etc.) and mixed practice (pets and farm animals). The services provided by the private practitioner include clinical services, disease prevention strategies, advice and a whole range of consultative services on nutrition, management, production, reproduction, biotechnology (embryo transfer), etc. Some practices are species-specific (dogs, cats and small pets, cattle, horses), whereas others offer services across species barriers and also cater for wildlife and exotic animals.

• Research

Research can be conducted in a wide spectrum of areas (veterinary, agriculture and biomedical sciences), attending to problems related to both animals and humans.

• Academia

Graduates can teach at veterinary, medical, agricultural and natural science faculties.

• Stateveterinaryservices

A significant number of veterinarians are employed as state or provincial veterinarians in government service. They render essential regulatory services related to the diagnosis, surveillance, monitoring, control, prevention and eradication of notifiable diseases. State veterinarians are also responsible for matters related to the import and export of animals and animal products and also for food safety and security. In regions where there are no private practitioners, state veterinarians may also provide clinical services.

• Private, state and provincial diagnosticlaboratories

Graduates can provide routine or forensic diagnostic services involving disciplines such as pathology, clinical pathology, microbiology and toxicology.

• Veterinarypublichealth

The production of food that is safe for human consumption and food security is a very important field in which the veterinarian plays a key role. Veterinarians are responsible for ensuring the maintenance of meat and milk hygiene in abattoirs and milk processing plants, in addition to their role in the maintenance and improvement of animal health on the farm. Veterinarians involved in the field of veterinary public health also play an important role in the control of zoonotic diseases (i.e. diseases transferred from animals to humans).

• Commerce

The veterinarian is involved in research and product development in the pharmaceutical and feed industries, as well as in the provision of technical advice in sales and management.

• Consultancy

Provision of specialised or specialist services to the farm animal and pet industries, for example, as a consultant in the pig industry, feedlots or specialist practice (such as surgery, internal medicine, ophthalmology and dentistry). In the case of a specialist practice, the practitioner will need to have the appropriate postgraduate qualification and be registered with SAVC to practise as a veterinarian and a specialist.

From a young age I have been surrounded by animals, so Veterinary Science was a natural passion. Without discipline and hard work, balanced with enough fun and a healthy and active lifestyle, I would not have reached my goals. Tukkies and Onderstepoort, in particular, have challenged me and today I am proud to be associated with this world-class institution!

Veterinary nursing (DipVetNurs)

• Laboratoryanimalscience

The veterinarian is an essential member of the team involved in the welfare of laboratory animals, monitoring the utilisation of animals for experimental purposes and giving advice on ethical issues.

• Wildlifemanagement

Wildlife ranching, conservation and involvement at a zoological institution offer wonderful career opportunities for a veterinarian. However, posts in these fields are limited.

• Poultryproduction

The poultry industry provides large volumes of animal protein for human consumption and veterinarians play a pivotal role in the poultry industry.

• AnimalWelfare

The veterinarian is intimately involved in animal welfare in the provision of clinical services and advice, and in management issues at welfare organisations. Veterinarians are involved in general matters pertaining to the welfare of animals through the promotion of appropriate husbandry practices, nutritional practices, disease prevention strategies and sound production systems.

• Internationalemployment

Graduates from the Faculty enjoy wide national and international recognition and the BVSc degree of the University of Pretoria is recognised in the United Kingdom, as well as by the Australasian Veterinary Boards Council and Malaysian authorities.

For a young person who is interested in animals and/or a career in biomedical sciences, veterinary science provides a spectrum of wonderful opportunities. Like many other similar career options, veterinary science may perhaps be considered a ‘calling’ and the decision to become a veterinarian involves both the head and the heart. While a love for animals may be a component of the decision to pursue veterinary science as a career, a deeper empathy will be required, coupled with a sense of compassion and caring.

The course is demanding and requires dedication and hard work. It is a career with long and often irregular hours and will certainly test tolerance levels. Whatever field of the profession the graduate chooses to pursue, the ability to work with both people and animals is essential.

Veterinary science offers a host of rewarding and challenging career opportunities, all of which can bring immense job satisfaction. SAVC controls the ethics and standards of veterinary education and practice and all graduates must register with the Council before being allowed to practice, and are subject to its rules. The veterinary profession in South Africa has a proud tradition of service to the community, which has been built on the high quality of the training provided and the professional service rendered.

Veterinary Nursing (DipVetNurs)DipVetNurs is a two-year diploma programme. It is currently offered on a full-time basis.

The Faculty intends to introduce a degree programme, subject to finding solutions to a number of technical problems.

Veterinary nursing, as a recognised profession, is offered only by the Faculty of Veterinary Science of the University of Pretoria. The closing date for applications is 30 June.

Studying veterinary science is a rollercoaster ride of hard work, new experiences and a lot of fun. No other degree provides the opportunity to inseminate a cow, observe a necropsy on a crocodile or witness a goat being born all on the same day. But then again, how else could we prepare for a career that could see us working with dogs at the local vet, with cows on a dairy farm or even with lions in a zoo?

Language policy and medium of instruction

With regard to the medium of instruction, the University uses two official languages, namely Afrikaans and English. In formal teaching, the medium of instruction is either Afrikaans or English, or both of these languages,

provided that there is a demand and that it is academically and economically justifiable. However, it remains a student’s responsibility to ascertain, on an annual basis, in which language a module and any further level of that module is presented. In respect of administrative and other services, a student has the right to choose whether the University should communicate with him or her in Afrikaans or English.

Compulsory Academic Literacy Test for registered first-year students

A student with high academic potential can have a low level of academic literacy, which may put his or her academic success at risk. The academic literacy levels of all new first-year students at the University of Pretoria are therefore measured by means of the standardised Academic Literacy Test. If necessary, students are placed on a suitable academic literacy programme in accordance with their level of risk.

The Academic Literacy Test is written only once and is compulsory for all new first-year students, regardless of whether the student has already written an admission test or has completed a language course elsewhere. If the student later decides to change his or her academic programme, the Academic Literacy Test does not need to be written again.

Students may write the Academic Literacy Test in either English or Afrikaans. Students in the faculties of Health Sciences and Veterinary Science are obliged to write the test in English. Please refer to your Programme for registration and start of the academic year (29 January to11 February 2011) for times and venues of the Academic Literacy Test.

Compulsory Computer and InformationLiteracy test for registered first-year students

The Computer and Information Literacy modules, CIL111 and CIL121 (or as prescribed for the different programmes), are compulsory for all new first-year students.

Students with previous computer qualifications or those who already have a high level of computer literacy are not automatically excluded from the Computer Literacy module (CIL 111). These students will have the option to write an exemption examination. Please refer to the information in your Programme for registration and start of the academic year (29 January to 11 February 2011). Apply for the exemption exam and get a time slot issued at the Student Computer Centre (not the Informatorium). This is north of Sci-Enza and Technical Services Building.

If you pass the CIL 111 exemption examination, an exemption levy is payable instead of the normal tuition fee for this module.

Financial implications

The estimated tuition fees for the Veterinary Science programme for 2011 ranges between R24 900 and R35 770 per annum. This amount is subject to change and should not be considered to be the final cost. Prospective students are advised to adjust these amounts for inflationary increases in costs. The rate of inflation during 2011 can be used as a guideline to estimate the increase in tuition fees for 2012.

The cost of the academic component of the Veterinary Nursing diploma programme is approximately R45 000 for both years at 2010 rates. The academic fees for BVSc and DipVetNurs include study material and computer usage.

International students from countries other than those in the SADC region will, in addition, be subjected to an administrative levy of approximately R2 000, as well as twice the tuition fees.

I am in my final year in Veterinary Science and I have always enjoyed acquiring the knowledge needed to become a competent veterinarian. The intricacies of medicine and physiology never cease to amaze me. As I am about to start my clinical year, I look forward to integrating theory and practice. I have won the following awards at Onderstepoort: the Malie Smuts prize for Veterinary Comparative Anatomy, the Gerry Swan floating trophy for General Veterinary Pharmacology and the Taurus prize for Bovine Reproduction. Over the years I have also received various merit bursaries. I would first like to spend a few years at a mixed practice after qualifying before choosing a speciality.

The Faculty of Veterinary Science offers a number of student support programmes to ensure that students are able to cope with the demands of the academic and social environment in which they find themselves during their studies.

• Orientation programmes for new students are offered at the beginning of each academic year. From 29 January to 11 February 2011, all new first-year students will attend the Programme for registration and start of the academic year. It is also known as A2S@UP (Adventure to Success at UP)

• A mentor system, run by students and staff, provides social support to new students at the Onderstepoort Campus, especially during the initial period of adaptation required to find their way around the campus and its facilities.

• A student tutor system is in place for students in the third year of the Veterinary Biology degree, as well as in the first year of the Veterinary Nursing programme. The tutors are senior students who assist fellow students in specific academic courses under supervision of the relevant heads of department. Additional assistance with matters such as time management and study methods is available if required.
