Central Sterile Processing as a Profession?

The central processing professional is considered to be the HEART of the hospital. They are a critical, valuable asset within the healthcare spectrum. Central Sterile Processing technicians work with various units within the hospital and other facilities including, but not limited to: surgical centers and dental offices. The operating room is one of the central processing department’s largest customers. The Central Sterile Processing technician is responsible for cleaning and decontaminating surgical instruments and equipment used on patients, and the quality control distribution of those items.

Working conditions?

The central processing department is brightly lit, traffic controlled, moderate to medium noise, and temperature controlled. The central processing technician must be able to lift and/or move heavy objects, walk frequently, and stand on their feet for extended periods of time. The Central Sterile Processing technician may also be exposed quite frequently to harsh chemicals, unpleasant sights and odors, communicable diseases, bacteria and pathogens (disease-causing organisms), and other hazardous waste and materials. The work week for the Central Sterile Processing technician is typically 36-40 hours a week. Depending on the facility, the technician may be required to work days, evenings, or nights and may include weekends and/or holiday hours. Shifts can be 8, 10, or 12-hour

Page 3: Fayetteville Technical Community College - …€¦ · Web viewFTCC College Catalog FTCC Purpose Statement The purpose of Fayetteville Technical Community College is to provide affordable

shifts. Some facilities may also require the technician to take “call” (be available to work on short notice in case of an emergency).

Personal Characteristics

As stated previously, the Central Sterile Processing professional is a valuable team member to the hospital and departments they serve. The technician should possess a positive work ethic. They must be able to work under potentially stressful situations while maintaining a stable temperament. The Central Sterile Processing professional must also be able to work at a quick pace, without losing precision to ensure that the work is completely both effectively and accurately. Manual dexterity and physical stamina is essential. Anyone interested in working in this field should have a strong desire to work as a team-player, as well as a desire to contribute to quality, effective patient care.

Work Environment/Career Advancement

Central Sterile Processing technicians most commonly work in hospitals, both small and large. They can also work, however in surgery centers, dialysis facilities, and dental clinics. Central processing professionals that have completed advanced degrees and experience can go into mid to upper-level management, or work for major surgical instrument rep companies as sales reps or managers.

Admissions ProcessHistory of Program: FTCC’s Central Sterile Processing curriculum began in 2008 as a one semester program. Students were required to take a biology co-requisite course in order to receive their certificate of completion. In 2014, the department decided to eliminate the biology course, and instead, incorporate it into the program in order to retain more students that would successfully complete all requirements of the course.

Today, FTCC offers the Central Sterile Processing course at a certificate level. FTCC has been a major contributor to the training of central processing professionals working in the Cumberland County and surrounding areas, both near and far. The program has an excellent faculty with many years of experience working together to train and graduate competent central sterile processing technicians. A large percentage of FTCC’s central processing students have successfully obtained their National Certification as a central processing technician through the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD).

General information: All STP classes begin in the fall term and run Monday through Friday. All STP courses are offered ONLY in the evening, during the first 8-week semester (Monday-Friday, 5:00-6:50 p.m., Monday and Wednesday 7:00-8:50 p.m.). During the second eight weeks, the students are required to complete a minimum of 18 hours per week for clinic. These days are typically broken down into two 5-hour and two 4-hour days or evenings.

Students must have a minimum Health GPA of 2.0 and maintain a minimum of a 2.0 GPA (cumulative) at the time of entering the program. All computer and technical courses must be current within the last 7 years.

Page 8: Fayetteville Technical Community College - …€¦ · Web viewFTCC College Catalog FTCC Purpose Statement The purpose of Fayetteville Technical Community College is to provide affordable

The only prerequisite for entering the central processing curriculum is a successful completion of high school with diploma or a conferred GED.

Admission Process: The following steps are important to follow in the admission process:

Step 1: General Admission Requirements1. Complete and submit your online application via CFNC (College

Foundation of NC). The link is located at FTCC Homepage “Getting Started”.

2. Request all official transcripts to be sent to our Admissions office from high school and each college previously attended. It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure the Admission office receives the transcripts before the deadline.

3. Schedule and complete the entrance assessments with the required minimum scores or achieve a grade of “C” or better in all recommended developmental courses (if required). Developmental courses may be attempted only twice to satisfy the prerequisite requirements. The current admission policy allows for certain exemptions from taking the entry assessment (see the College Catalog or speak with a counselor).

4. Visit Health Programs Admissions (HTC 202) to receive your Health-Related Student Educational Plan (SEP). This document will contain all the courses you need to (1) be eligible for your program of choice and (2) the general education courses you need to take for competitive points.

5. Complete all program prerequisites outlined in the Student Educational Plan (SEP). A grade of “C” or better is needed to satisfy prerequisite requirements. Based on current grading policy, if a “D”, “F”, or “W” is achieved in the first attempt; a student may attempt the course once more (=two attempts).

Step 2: Specific Health Program Admission Requirements1. Upon completion of the requirements listed in Step 1, all applicants

may apply by logging into Web Advisor, going to the “Registration” Section and clicking “Student Health Program Application”. To compete as a Category I applicant, you must apply by January 30th.

Page 9: Fayetteville Technical Community College - …€¦ · Web viewFTCC College Catalog FTCC Purpose Statement The purpose of Fayetteville Technical Community College is to provide affordable

Category I (1) Category II (2)The first group of people considered for selection is the Category 1 candidates.

The second group of people considered for selection is the Category 2 candidates.

Met January 30th Deadline Applied after the January 30th Deadline

Step 3: Selection CriteriaApplicants will be ranked and selected on a competitive basis. The number of points awarded in the following areas will determine ranking:

1. Grade points based on credits earned previously completed related courses.

a. A minimum Health GPA of 2.0 on all related work for the degree.

b. A minimum cumulative FTCC GPA of 2.0 must be maintained.

2. An applicant’s name will be removed from consideration if the applicant does not attend the mandatory Department Information Session. The Department Chairperson must approve any exception to this requirement. (15 points)

Competitive Process of Admissions: Competitive points are earned by registering for and taking courses that are deemed “related” to Central Sterile Processing. These courses include: ENG 111 and CIS 110/113. The grades you earn from these classes comprise your “quality points”, also known as QPS. QPS points are computed by the grade-point equivalent (GPE) in a specific course multiplied by the number of credit hours earned. Note: Student must make a “C” or better in all related courses.

Example: If you earn an A in ENG 111, the “A” equates to a 4.0 GPE-multiply that by 3 credit hours and you have earned 12 QPS for that course. Complete this step for every required class for sterile processing listed above.

The higher your grades, the higher your QPS; therefore, your chances of earning a seat in the program is enhanced. Students are encouraged to take as many related classes as possible to increase their QPS scores.

The Central Sterile Processing Department awards points to those students who have prior or current Health Care experience and/or observation

hours within the Sterile Processing field. An Information Session Rating Form is included in this booklet.

Information Sessions: All students considered for entry into the Sterile Processing curriculum will receive a mandatory Information Session notice through FTCC Student email in which the Program Coordinator will provide program information and review the application process. Please refer to the Central Sterile Processing Information Session Rating Form included in this booklet regarding points awarded.

Points awarded by the program are added to the overall QPS score; students’ names are ranked in descending order (with all points considered) and sent to Health Programs Admissions in April. The Health Programs Admissions will conduct a record audit to ensure eligibility and then reassess the rank order. On or around May 1, the top 10 students (in rank order) are sent conditionally selected letters; any other remaining students are put on an alternate list. The remaining applicants will be notified that they were not selected and should reapply the following year. Note: Conditionally accepted students will have 10 days to accept or decline their seat.

Attendance at the Information Session is mandatory; failure to attend this session will automatically disqualify the applicant for consideration and entry into the Central Sterile Processing Program that academic year.

There is no waiting list for Health Programs at FTCC. The process is a competitive entry format in which all students desiring to enter the Central Sterile Processing Program follow the steps listed above; all students not accepted into the program will need to reapply the following year. Applications do not carry over to the following year(s).

Tentative Timeline of Admissions Announcement: April 15-Department Rating Forms are returned to the Health

Programs Admissions Office.

May 1- The Health Programs Admission Office completes audit of records; emails out acceptance letters and acceptance cards to student.

Course and Clinical Information-Academic RequirementsBecause of the demands of the Central Sterile Processing Program, students are strongly encouraged to limit work schedules.

Students must earn a grade of “B” or better in all STP courses to retain their seat in the program. A grade of “C” in a STP course will result in dismissal from the program; however, the student may reapply to the program in accordance with the guidelines set forth in the Central Sterile Processing Handbook.

Students that withdraw during the fall semester may reenter the next fall term. All students must be certain to continue to meet all FTCC’s admission criteria. Reentry is strictly based on space-availability. Re-admission must occur within one year from withdrawal.

A student that receives an “F” or a “W” in the Central Sterile Processing Program may not return to the program. The Department Chairperson

Page 12: Fayetteville Technical Community College - …€¦ · Web viewFTCC College Catalog FTCC Purpose Statement The purpose of Fayetteville Technical Community College is to provide affordable

may reevaluate this policy, especially where extenuating circumstances are involved.

Students will need access to a reliable computer for assignments. Students should keep in mind that all coursework that needs to be completed on the computer must be completed in a timely manner, according to the scheduled deadlines for assignments, even if the student does not own a computer at home. FTCC has two computer labs available to students for their use at the Health Technology Center and Advanced Technology Center. Note: Please refer to these centers for available times.

Students will need reliable transportation for clinical rotations. It is the responsibility of the student to arrive on time for each clinical site they are scheduled to rotate through. Clinical rotations are assigned to each student based on availability. The student can offer suggestions to sites they wish to attend, and the instructor will try to work with the request, however it is not guaranteed they will get requested sites. Students should be aware that the assigned clinical schedule can only be changed once and should be reserved for emergencies or severe conflicts.

American Disabilities Act StatementStudents with disabilities who believe that they may need accommodations in their coursework are encouraged to contact Disability Support Services, which is located in Room 127B of the Student Center, as soon as possible to better ensure that such accommodations are implemented in a timely fashion. Those students who do not register and comply with Disability Support Services could jeopardize their ability to fulfill didactic and clinical requirements.

Honesty and Student EthicsAs a developing professional healthcare provider, students are held to a high standard of personal and professional ethics to include:

Honesty while taking quizzes, tests, and exams.

Honesty and ethical behavior in providing clinical services.

Personal and professional responsibility in the care and maintenance of school supplies and equipment.

Page 13: Fayetteville Technical Community College - …€¦ · Web viewFTCC College Catalog FTCC Purpose Statement The purpose of Fayetteville Technical Community College is to provide affordable

Personal and professional responsibility in the rendering of infection control and aseptic technique.

Truthfulness and professionalism in interactions with fellow students, faculty, staff, hospital employees, and patients.

Adherence to the dress code and professional appearance policy of the Central Sterile Processing Department.

Addictions to drugs and alcohol, which may predispose substandard or unsafe treatment of patients, are grounds for dismissal from the Central Sterile Processing Program. Chronic disregard or failure to adhere to the rules and regulations of the Central Sterile Processing Department is also grounds for immediate dismissal. Please note that this list is not inclusive.

Communicable Disease StatementAs a healthcare provider, students enrolled in the Central Sterile Processing Program are exposed to communicable diseases such as tuberculosis, HIV, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, influenza, and other blood borne diseases and pathogens. Students will be trained in universal precautions and asepsis techniques to minimize the potential of disease transmission. When healthcare providers follow established infection control procedures, disease transmission from contaminated instrumentation and medical supplies from surgical patients to members of the Central Sterile Processing team are extremely low.

The Americans with Disabilities Act forbids discrimination against patients with HIV; therefore, students are required to treat all medical equipment and supplies as a potential hazard and are not allowed to refrain from reprocessing instrumentation that may have been exposed to HIV and other blood borne pathogens. Refusal can ultimately result in the student’s clinical success for the Central Sterile Processing program.

Students accepted to the Central Sterile Processing program will verify their knowledge of the Communicable Disease Statement and the risk for disease exposure, and sign an agreement to service all patients that are assigned to him/her regardless of the patient’s sex, race, or disease status.

Central Sterile Processing students are required to obtain a series of three injections of the Hepatitis B vaccination prior to their clinical rotations. The first injection must be received before you return the medical form. Students are responsible for obtaining and reporting the dates of the

Page 14: Fayetteville Technical Community College - …€¦ · Web viewFTCC College Catalog FTCC Purpose Statement The purpose of Fayetteville Technical Community College is to provide affordable

succeeding two immunizations in a timely fashion. In addition to Hepatitis B, students are required to receive other vaccinations such as: T-DAP, Influenza, Chicken Pox, MMR, etc. Students will be required to submit documentation of Varicella and MMR immunization or a titer verifying immunity. Central Sterile Processing students must also show proof that they have received a TB skin test (PPD) that will not expire until after their last clinical date. This is mandatory! Other stipulations for immunizations apply at various clinical sites and will be addressed accordingly to make sure students are in compliance for rotations.

FTCC’s policy found in the College Catalog regarding communicable disease students in health program states:

“Under the FTCC Communicable Disease Policy, students who enter a health program or other program with potential exposure to blood or other bodily fluids will be required to have begun or completed all immunizations as specified in the pre-entrance medical record prior to admission. Those students who do not receive immunizations could jeopardize their ability to fulfill clinical requirements. The prospective student will also be required to sign a statement releasing FTCC from any liability to the failure to have the immunizations”.

In addition, the FTCC Administrative Procedure Manual addresses the Communicable Disease Policy; a copy of this directive is available upon request.

Cardiopulmonary ResuscitationAll Central Sterile Processing Students must be certified in health care provider level cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). A copy of current qualification must be presented to the Program Coordinator. Students are responsible for scheduling and completing CPR recertification prior to the expiration date. Students may take CPR from one of these two providers:

American Red Cross

American Heart Association

Note: FTCC offers CPR classes through continuing education classes located in the Neil Currie Continuing Education Center. Current CPR certification is required for the career of the Central Sterile Processing Technician. Please note that the majority of sites prefer American Heart Association, and this is the program taught at FTCC.

Page 15: Fayetteville Technical Community College - …€¦ · Web viewFTCC College Catalog FTCC Purpose Statement The purpose of Fayetteville Technical Community College is to provide affordable

Central Sterile Processing Certification ExaminationAt the end of the second eight weeks, the Central Sterile Processing students will take a final examination in order to successfully complete their STP course; this exam will also prepare the students for their National examination through the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution. The test is only offered four times a year through the national organization. Students are encouraged to take the exam the next time it is offered, which falls on February of each year after completing the Central Sterile Processing program.

Students who earn an “A” in STP 101 and are in good standings moving into STP 102 and STP 103 will be allowed to sit for their exam in November. A letter on their behalf will be sent by the Program Coordinator to CBSPD to allow the student to sit early. Students who take their exam early must do so with the understanding that the program and all requirements must be completed. Students will not be considered graduates of the program if any course requirements remain.

Certification as a Central Sterile Processing Technician demonstrates that the technician meets the national standards for knowledge that underline the Central Sterile Processing Technician’s practice.

Certification is a means for upward mobility, a condition for employment in most government and veteran affiliations, can lead to a higher pay in some areas, and a source of recognition nationwide. Please note that it is the student’s responsibility to pay for their national examination.

Central Sterile Processing Employment OpportunitiesThere are a variety of employment opportunities available to the Central Sterile Processing new graduate. Most technicians are employed in hospitals, but there are other opportunities available in dental clinics and ambulatory surgical centers to name a few. Students are assisted in finding and securing employment and most are offered positions while still completing clinicals. Completing an advanced degree and/or specializing in different areas can open the following opportunities for technicians with experience:

Sterile Processing Department QuestionnaireThe following questionnaire is used to fill out the rating form during the information session. Students are given the questionnaire via email to bring with them to the session. This allows the program coordinator to accurately award points (for a possible total of 15 points). Students that have no experience or volunteer work will not receive any points for those specific categories. Attendance points are awarded based on punctuality and preparedness for the information session. Students that are late, inattentive, and/or not prepared will not receive full marks for that category. The questions are as follows:

1) How much experience do you have in the health or human services field? In what specific area(s) is your experience? How many months/years were you in this field?

2) Have you been a part of any extracurricular activities (post high school)? Any scholarships or academic achievements rewarded? If so, what was rewarded and when was it rewarded? Have you received any college Certificates/Diplomas/Degrees? If so, in what course of study?

3) Have you ever observed/shadowed any sterile processing professionals? If so, when and where? Any volunteer experience at all? If so, when and where?

Once the information session is over, the information points received will be added to the competitive points that were awarded (ENG 111 and CIS 110/113) for a total point standing. The top 10 students are then offered a seat into the program. Alternates are in place for any of those 10 who choose to not accept their seat.
