Performance-wise, the library continued to pursue all of the goals

established in the 2010-2015 Strategic Plan. Circulation topped the

1,250,000 mark, programming attendance was at an all-time high of

43,979 and the collection swelled to nearly 280,000 materials, including

adding digital music and magazines to the collection. Additionally, the

Summer Reading Program had its highest participation ever with over

4,700 children and adults registered.

Over the course of the year, one thing was quite noticeable. The Fayetteville

community loves its library. In fact, some could say they are “loving it

to death.” Programming space was maxed out, sometimes to the point

of having to hold programs twice to accommodate the crowds. Meeting

rooms were consistently full during all operating hours. The computer lab

frequently had people waiting their turn to use the computers, and the

shelves were near maximum capacity. To address the situation, the Library

Board of Trustees commissioned Blair Library architect Jeffrey Scherer to

update the Fayetteville Public Library Master Plan. This work will begin early

next year and will chart the path forward for the library for the next 20 years.

These are exciting times for the Fayetteville Public Library. It was a fun,

fast-paced, busy year. The library continues to strive to meet the needs

of its entire community. Its ability to do so would not be possible without

the continued support of the Library’s Board of Trustees, elected officials,

FPL Foundation members, Friends of the Library members, sponsors and

donors, volunteers and dedicated library staff.

The upcoming year promises to be just as exciting, and the library looks

forward to serving the Fayetteville community and continuing to be not just

a good library, but a great library.

Sincerely,

David Johnson,

Executive Director

2012 was a year of change, accomplishment, and celebration for the library.

In February, I accepted the leadership role of Executive Director following

the admirable service of Lolly Greenwood as Interim Executive Director

in 2011. We quickly filled the open Manager of Accounting and Human

Resources position and the Manager of Marketing and Communication

position. In addition to filling all open positions, several organizational

changes were made as well.

With an eye toward professional development and growth among the

library team members, it was important to focus on succession planning

and building management “bench strength” in the various departments.

Several “Assistant Manager” positions were created that will allow people

in those roles to develop the management experience that is required for

manager’s roles.

Additional change was made in how the library conducts business. Most

notably was the implementation of a bottom-up, needs-based budgeting

process. Each department was asked, “What does it take for you to run

your business,” and we challenged each department to think of themselves

as a small business. Unlike previous top-down budgeting models, this

allowed each department to have full transparency into what it takes to

“keep the lights on” and full control over how their resources are allocated.

2012 saw the achievement of the coveted National Endowment for the

Humanities Challenge Grant. Awarded in 2007, the library was able to raise

a triple match of $1.8 million dollars to match the $600,000 challenge from

the NEH. Once all pledges are received the library will have a $2 million

endowment for humanities collections and programs. This achievement

was made in no small part by a $250,000 gift from the Friends of the

Fayetteville Public Library, the single largest gift given to the grant.

To celebrate the achievement of the NEH grant and the premiere of the

Larry Foley directed documentary film Up Among the Hills: The Story of

Fayetteville, the library held a “Light Up The Night” gala celebration. The

library was literally transformed into a spectacular red carpet, black-tie

Hollywood premiere theater. A full white table cloth dinner was served

to over 600 guests, many of whom traveled from out of state back to

Fayetteville for the event. Fayetteville, its history, and its citizens were

celebrated on a grand scale that will not be seen for years to come.
