The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) on the Boca Raton campus at FAU is dedicated to offering intellectually enriching educational experiences to adults of all ages. With more than 30,000 tickets sold per year, the program is a national model of exemplary Lifelong Learning programs. Noncredit courses are offered in a welcoming atmosphere with state-of-the-art facilities. This community of learners with no age threshold enjoys a diverse and creative curriculum, along with concerts and entertainment. Courses are taught by FAU professors and distinguished guest lecturers. Course offerings include such varied subjects as foreign policy, health, music, art, history, science, literature, philosophy, current events and films.

Most of the OLLI Boca programs are held in the Barry and Florence Friedberg Lifelong Learning Center Auditorium; an attractive 500-seat auditorium donated by the generous support of the Friedbergs and hundreds of patrons. It is a custom-designed space with wide aisles, an outstanding audiovisual system, superior acoustics and standards providing accessibility and comfort for the physically challenged.

Programs are also offered in two 60-seat rooms, or one 120-seat room in comfortable surroundings, and a conference room for discussion style sessions with the lecturer.

Single performances and multi-week series are presented all year round for our patrons enjoyment.

The morality police had their hands full in the 1920s and 30s. Women tested convention with shorter hemlines and bobbed hair, and fought for and won the vote, prohibition sent alcohol consumption underground, and the nascent film industry in Hollywood was awash in murder and drug scandals. With the threat of a federal censorship program looming, and under pressure from conservative and religious crusaders, Hollywood agreed to deliver wholesome

family entertainment to moviegoers. Their answer: the Motion Picture Production Code, ensuring that every American film would have a clean moral tone. Marcus discusses the Code and looks at censored films, Supreme Court cases, and efforts to protect people with susceptible minds (read women and children) from films of questionable taste. Marcus also examines social conditions that led to the demise of the Code in 1968 and the rating system which replaced it.

One of the most enduring characters ever created is the super-sleuth, Sherlock Holmes. His fame and fascination are so great that his own creator, Arthur Conan Doyle, at one point tried to kill him off only to have to bring him back to life to appease the many adoring readers who could not

get enough of Holmes and his companion, Dr. John Watson. A commanding stage and screen presence have subsequently kept this character alive in the popular eye, and 221B Baker Street at this very moment in London stands as the site of a very successful museum to a person who never even existed.

Art has its own language with a vocabulary consisting of forms, motifs, colors and expressive content. Within the arts, there is a range of recognizable disciplines, and in each category we find unique artists with innovative brilliance that sets them apart from their peers. The famous French art historian Andre Malraux, wrote, “If a great artist’s way of seeing is quite different than that of the ordinary man, the reason is that his power of sight has been educated, from its earliest days, by absorption of paintings and sculptures in the sophisticated world of art.” Archival films and images will abound.

In 2014, Hamer, took an audio tour of an exhibition of Rene Magritte’s art at the MOMA in NYC. The tour’s descriptions were interesting, full of historical context, but missing any basic understanding of the visual perception “tricks” that Magritte so masterfully employed in his paintings. Driven by curiosity and admiration for the art, Hamer began to write about Magritte’s work. Join in the discovery as we analyze several of Magritte’s iconic paintings from the unique point-of-view (POV) –the visual and brain mechanisms that are evoked by his surreal designs. Like a neuroscientist, Magritte deliberately revealed our visual brain processes in action! Most discussions of art are from an art critic’s perspective, but this course will add a new dimension to your appreciation of art.

Week 1: Introduction to Art & Visual Neuroscience

Week 2: How Do We Perceive Objects to Be Organized In 3-D From a 2-D Painting? Magritte’s “Le Blanc Seing”

Mark Twain once famously quipped, “There is no distinctly native American criminal class except Congress.” Somewhat less famously, he noted that “The political morals of the United States are not merely food for laughter, they are an entire banquet.” For more than 100 years, Hollywood has done its part to poke, prod and present the American political process on the big screen. Regardless of the subject or the genre, these films are among the best Hollywood ever produced. The four films to be viewed in this series present what, in Stone’s estimation, are among the best political films of the past 85 years. Some are satires, other serious dramas. However, whatever the form, they guarantee a great movie-going experience, especially as we get ever closer to the next presidential election.

Week 1:

RFE56

Gabriel Over the White House

QWEDF5

(1933): Walter Houston stars as a political hack who becomes president during the Depression.

Week 2:

RFE56

The Great McGinty

Week 3:

This series is a somewhat playful look at various familiar operatic storylines and scenes that receive little attention from the opera-going public. In addition, the unique and oft occurring phenomenon of the highly emotive scenes involving “madness” and”death” will be examined.

In Dani Shapiro’s bestselling memoir, Inheritance

QWEDF5

, the author’s life is turned upside down when she discovers her deceased father was not her biological father. The author’s quest to find her biological father and learn more about her past presents numerous ethical dilemmas to explore. Those with similar life experiences to Ms. Shapiro can undoubtedly relate to her story. But the memoir has broader implications for the rest of society, serving as a case study on ethics. The book speaks to issues of great significance for families, scientists, businesses and policymakers to examine, as it touches on privacy and confidentiality; science and technology; disclosure and deception. Moreover, the program will analyze how scientific and medical advances in the areas of DNA testing,

genetic engineering and methods to combat infertility may yield beneficial results but also generate unintended consequences for individuals, families and the public-at-large.

There will be a variety of activities to bring you

to the act of creating a work of art, including some art historical references and demonstrations. Shortly after arriving out west, the witty screenwriter Ben Hecht began referring to Hollywood as “The land of mink-lined swimming pools and plastic palm trees.” Not to be outdone, the equally witty Dorothy Parker noted that “The only ‘ism’ Hollywood believes in is plagiarism.” The two were by no means alone in their lowly assessment of the world’s film capital. William Faulkner called Hollywood “A place where a man can get stabbed in the back while climbing a ladder.” And then there was Fred Allen, who claimed: “You can take all the sincerity in Hollywood, place it in the navel of a fruit fly and still have room enough for three caraway seeds and a producer’s heart.” When it comes to having a jaundiced view of the movie industry, nothing and no one is more jaded or funnier than Hollywood itself. And when Hollywood makes films about Hollywood, watch out! This lecture series highlights four films Hollywood made about

itself. Beware as cinematic arrows are drawn from a quiver of satire.

Week 1:

RFE56

What Price Hollywood?

QWEDF5

(1932): The original A Star is Born

QWEDF5

, starring Constance Bennett.

Week 2:

RFE56

The field of artificial intelligence (AI) has experienced a revival in recent years. Advancements in software and hardware and the emergence of a set of techniques collectively known as deep learning, which have enabled better-than-human performance in many challenging tasks, including visual object recognition and speech understanding, have made that revival possible. One of the most fertile fields for AI applications is healthcare, where hundreds of companies, from startups to technology behemoths, are working on AI-powered solutions to multiple problems. Drug discovery,

in-patient care and hospital management, patient data and risk analytics, lifestyle management and monitoring (using wearable devices), mental health, nutrition, and medical imaging and diagnostics have all benefitted from AI. This program will provide an introduction to fundamental aspects of the current state of AI in medicine to a non-technical audience. It will include a large number of examples of applications of AI in medicine that will broaden your view of the field and allow a better understanding of its foundations, risks, applications, and implications.

We live in a stressful and conflicted world. Most of us are seeking to feel better under challenging circumstances. This program, which is rooted in science, is based on positive psychology, the cognitive model, solution-focused brief therapy, and a coaching mindset. Together we will embark on a journey of self-reflection, emotional regulation, balance, and greater inner peace. Another goal of this series is to raise self-confidence and self-control while engaging in conversation. Since we learn more by doing than through any other channel, participants will discover information and tools based on research. They will experience these tools via exercises, surveys, PowerPoint slides, video excerpts, and music. Handouts will be distributed as reminders of our discussions. Through this

series, participants will gain a greater understanding of the foundations of happiness; increase their use of empathetic questions and responses in conversation; become clearer about their character strengths and engage in adaptive thinking patterns more frequently using the ABC method of resilience.

This class is participatory and, although no one will be called upon, joining in the conversation will be encouraged. No preparatory reading is necessary, although each book is definitely a good read. There will be brief handouts so that the writing of each author can be experienced. Each session will begin with an overview and summary of the book. A series of provocative questions and discussions about both the ideas presented and their relevance in our lives and the world at large will follow.

This presentation examines the impact of the atomic bomb on men, women, and children in the early years of the Cold War and the Atomic Age. It covers the political and military impact, as well as how the atomic bomb affected American society: in the home, the workplace, the community, and the schools. This lecture also includes a closer look at Florida during this time, especially during the Cuban Missile Crisis. There will

be both audio and video clips to help visualize this time in our history when people truly believed an atomic attack was not only possible but probable. For the Baby Boom Generation, this historical period represents their childhood, when duck and cover drills and sci-fi movies made indelible memories. The presentation blends the serious side of the atomic bomb with the more comic side of how popular culture capitalized on it.

— Isabel Hidalgo, Kelly/Strul Emerging Scholar

“I have had so many great experiences due to the support of the [Kelly/Strul] program and the people who are a part of it. I’ve been coming out of my shell in ways I never imagined I could, finding my voice and my passions in the work I do, and learning something new every day.”

The Kelly/Strul Emerging Scholars Program provides financial resources, academic support, and mentorship to first-generation, low-income students from across Florida. History major Isabel Hidalgo is one of more than 9,000 first-gen students at FAU and part of the first cohort of Kelly/Strul Emerging Scholars.

Thanks to the Kelly/Strul program, Isabel had the opportunity to study abroad in Venice, Italy, where she conducted research on the city’s history and culture. She also has enjoyed two internships; one with the Old Davie School and Historical Museum and the other in the Wimberly Library’s Special Collections division.

After completing her undergraduate degree this May, she hopes to pursue a master’s degree and to one day share her love for the past as a historian. Isabel describes her college experience as a Kelly/Strul Scholar as “nothing less than amazing.”

With the 2020 Presidential election nearly upon us, we all should be focused on whether our election process is a fair one that truly reflects the promise of “one person, one vote.” This presentation reviews the history and status of the evolving constitutional and statutory framework that now guarantees

the right to vote for each U.S. citizen who is 18 or older. It then discusses various potential threats to that hard-earned right, including apportionment rules, gerrymandering, “dark money,” voter fraud, voter suppression, and election meddling and interference.
