Fanny A. Rodriguera

FAS Father’s Day Celebration
FAS did it again! The fun we had yesterday ( Father’s Day) can not be beat even by the then famous Mother’s Day celebration sponsored by the men of FAS. The event should grace a whole page of the "Reflection", but we will be satisfied with any article that comes out on our own FAS CELEBRATES. We have new people who attended and who have voiced their commitment to FAS already. Unlike Mother’s Day, we had only one guest out of the 32 or more attendees yesterday. The room seemed so full because of the fullness of voices, the singing of course, right away by the now famous Tayabas Man, who by the way also has a new face, the music from Roger's collections, the String and Vocal Trio which is now making a name, the chit-chatting of everybody, etc, etc. The event started with a prayer by Cathy who invoked the Lord to shower our group with blessings coming from the Father of the Universe, that His spirit will be amongst as we celebrate the Fathers, those who were present and those who, for some reasons were absent. The program which was emceed by our petitely cute and masterfully able Cristy Cambronero, awakened a seemingly dormant and sober ( just for a while) audience into laughters heard by those celebrating elsewhere in Solivita. I don't have the most appropriate adjectives to describe the facial and bodily responses by the audience to the fun un-inhibitively exhibited by the game participants. First, Cristy called on the ladies to do a "pay off" tribute to their husbands. Did you know that it is common in our households that husbands have the last say? "Yes, dear" is the common response.

All go and all game, specially Ed Simeon who was the winner in the "Hamon sa Kampion ng Kantahan" game. The "Grab the Banana Game" a sequel to the Men's banana game for the mothers, was so hilarious with Carmen(Mimie), a doctor who is knowledgeable in human anatomy, insinuated some obscene scenario, declared winner. We have discovered a comedian in her. Aren't we so fortunate to have all these talents at FAS? The "Balloon Kissing Dance" game was so delightful to watch with dancers efficiently dancing as well as securing the balloons between their lips. This was won with a tie between Eddy/Ely and Rudy/Boots partnership. The "Needle Threading"game was quiet but fast and Ernie and Carmen coveted the first price. A close second was given to Bert and Veny. It was harder for those 65 and over years old eyes especially with cataracts. The games and laughters exhausted the stomachs that now were clamoring for food and were now deprived. There was an abundance of food that we partook and enjoyed to the serenading music of the "String and Vocal Trio" of Art Mateos, Eddy Jose and Roger Gutierrez. This new group is an addition to the "Harana" and the "Young At Hearts Singers" musical groups already established and which helped FAS become known in Solivita. There was quite a variety on the menu that was organized ahead of time by Nady, Rosie, Boots and Marlene, the Social Committee. We commend the members of this committee and everybody including the guests who all brought their delicious entrees. After dinner came the musical Tribute to the Fathers by the ladies who, even without rehearsals, rendered a new lyrical arrangement (by Naomi) of the "Medley of Filipino Folksongs" that the YAHS had already performed. This was followed by a romantic song "Silver Threads Among The Gold" dramatically and romantically performed by the wives to their husbands. A little touching, some became emotional the first time they heard the music. Most of the ladies did not follow Naomi's choreography of the sober and suave music, but you should have seen Nady wholeheartedly caressing and kissing Roger on the lips as the song dictates. I did not see much of the rest because I was caressing Merlin also, ha, ha! The guy loved it, said that that was his only chance in a long time.

The "Name that Tune" game was needed to help the group digest what they ate, requiring them just to sit and listen to 20 numbers and to identify their titles. Gil played just short portions of the songs and Nady and Naomi hummed those that don't have the scores. We discovered too late that Safy got all the songs by looking at what Gil was playing and passing them down to Eddy who passed them down to Roger who passed them down to Boots. They got 19 out of the 20. We did not embarrass the cheaters this time, but watch out next time. The fun of this game was when the prices were distributed. Naomi promised beforehand that the prizes will be 24 carat gold necklaces and she lived by that promise. Carmen(Mimie) was assigned to string the necklaces the night before and even Naomi was surprised to see the ingenuity put into the creation. Aside from just the "carat", actually carrots sliced in thin pieces, Mimie inserted beads of different colors. They are worth keeping! The last, but not the least of the games was the "Dressing Up Relay" which confused the men so much, they did not know what to do with the dressing up outfits they surprisingly found in their bags. It was so funny to see the men trying to make skirts out of the blouses and putting all the sarongs and tapis over their shoulders, or around their necks and heads. Some wives cheated and helped their husbands do it right. All is well that ended well. Everybody was a winner in these games because everybody was filled with gas and pain from laughing. The "Dancing with the Stars", line dancing and ballroom dancing culminated the affair at about 8:00 PM. Three couple participants who were none dancers were picked to do this number and the Ernie/Carmen partnership won again not because of the correctness of the dance but for the comedy put in it. Cleanup was fast after the ladies cleaned the casseroles for the "take out" part of the party. It was an afternoon of fun, camaraderie, cooperation and unity among members of FAS, not so great in number, but huge in friendship, love and support for each other. That is our mission and we are attaining it with flying colors. We hope we can continue this trend and that all will be healthy enough to take part in this kind of events

Narrative of the Quarterly Birthday Celebration –The Palms
Greetings to FAS members and friends!
The Birthday Committee - Ernie Canlas; Benny Rodriguera
and Roger Gutierrez - extend its heartfelt thanks for the
good- hearted cooperation of everybody concerned in FAS
for the very successful quarterly Birthday Bash held at the
Palms - June 12, 2011.
The forward people came at 3:00 p.m. to make the necessary
arrangements to prepare the venue for the party. Nady and
Roger, Reggie and Rosie, Marlene and Ed, Baby and Archie
and Cathy and Safy worked on re-arranging the format of
the chairs and tables; tables for food setting and tables for
the karaoke, the sound system, etc.
Wayne from Solivita, CERT was invited by Reggie to present
Hurricane Awareness. Wayne started his presentation at
3:45 with half of the FAS members present. It was all in all a
very good and informative presentation. Wayne even gave
away handouts to members to help in their hurricane
preparedness. The presentation ended around 4:30.
Since some of the key people to get the program started were
still missing; we decided to serve the soup - which is
everyone's favorite - Naomi's ever popular - arrozcaldong
goto ( Merlin is one of the birthday celebrants ). I, myself
had two half- bowl servings as it was all so yummy. Others
help themselves to Rosie's turon and to Mimi's ginataan. It
was like having the cocktail first before the meal. FAS
members and guests were circulating and socializing for a
good half hour.
Finally, Edwin Jose, our guest "gratis" Deejay came with his
daughter and started setting up his " things " and of course,
came the parents - our very own Ed ( one of the celebrants )
and Ely Jose. They brought in their specialty dish of pot
roast and the orders from other co-celebrants - Baby and
Archie Laano's pansit bihon guisado and baked salmon from
Bert and Veny Dy-Liacco. To add to the fares already
mentioned there was pansit luglog also from Rosie's kitchen;
Marlene's guinisang ampalaya; Pilipino salad of mangang
hilaw from Cristy; Remy Mateos chicken dish and lots of
desserts - from the buko pandan birthday cake - courtesy of
Roger and Nady; more from Mimi's kitchen of bikong
malagkit ( labor of love Mimie said) to Cathy's
specialties, leche plan - from Boots Julian; and cut up fruits
and watermelons and so much more. My apologies to those I
failed to mention but there were so much food; and it really
made my day -just to look at them; and made me very happy
to devour and enjoy them all.
FAS Father’s Day luncheon was held at Shingles
Creek at Orlando. This was organized by our ever dedicated members Nady and Roger Gutierrez. Twenty four members showed up to celebrate and honor their loving husbands. The food and the ambiance were just unbelievable. Difficult enough to observe Father’s Day without our family but on this occasion where we spent the day with friends, it felt like we were one happy family.

The program started around 5:00; with Reggie making the
welcome remarks - emphasizing that the celebration was not
just for the birthdays but also for celebration of the 113th
anniversary of Philippine Independence. We called on the
birthday celebrants present - to rise and stand by the
birthday cake to blow the candles. Present were - Baby
Laano, Eddie Jose, Eddie Simeon, Bert Dy-Liacco and
Merlin Martin. We mentioned the names of those unable to
attend - Jimmy Asuncion, Howard Price and Bert
Nepomuceno. The FAS members and guests sang a hearty
Happy Birthday Song and the candles were blown. Cathy
Farag did a beautiful job in saying the grace and blessing of
the feast before we had dinner. Everybody just enjoyed the
very good spread and that alone would have made a perfect
party but what came next was the unexpected thrill of having
attended this celebration.
After dinner the program resumed with the singing of the
Philippine National Anthem and the very well loved song of
" Ang Bayan Ko " led by Naomi and accompanied by Eddie
Jose. The heartfelt singing made us quite close to the
Filipino community which we are a part of - we are Filipinos
- and we in our own little way by singing the anthem and
Bayan Ko made an affirmation that we are proud to be
Filipinos and we joined in the celebration of the Philippine
Independence Day.
BTW, as program coordinator - I sort of called each
birthday celebrant ahead of time to warn them that I would
be calling on the celebrants and their spouses; the focus will
be on them - and they will participate in the program as
performers. But what they will do will be the SURPRISE
and surprise was what we got !
Even before the program started; Archie Laano - the
entertainer from the City of Tayabas had been busy with his
karaoke; singing wonderful melodies for our entertainment -
foregoing the pleasure of eating - which made several shouts
of "Kumain ka na Archie " from the crowd. Now that the
program was about to begin - and Archie will be singing for
Baby - I really wondered how he could pull this one - to
make the audience excited - after all he is already
overexposed. But Baby and Archie did their "singing and
comedy act " so superbly - it had no equal. To our
amusement, Baby wrapped Archie in a sarong - and while
she sang a Hawaiian melody, accompanied by her newly-
purchased ukulele- Archie did a Hawaiian dance ! It was so
funny - we were floored. Of course, I need not say that
Archie made some very x-rated moves but that is beside the
point. Archie later sang " Portrait of My Love " to Baby and
to our delight; Baby did her best zumba moves while Archie
was singing. That was all unexpected and so fresh and
impromptu act .
-
Next came the challenger - Eddie Simeon - and he sang
“Gaano Kita Kamahal “to Marlene. Marlene was trying
very hard to keep a straight face and all the guests with
Eddie singing with gusto and bravado - his own
interpretation of the song. Tunay na Hamon sa
Kampeon. The performance ended up with a hearty
lips to lips.
Ed and Ely went out to practice their number and as
they came into the ballroom - I called them to get their
number. To our delight the two of them did two
numbers - the first is " Hiram sa Diyos " a beautiful,
haunting song about borrowed life from God - and if we
do not know how to love - who are we ?
Then they did another religious song and they were
joined by their son Edwin while little Laurie was helping
cut and serve the birthday cake. It was as usual a
family affair for the Joses and it was simply lovely to
behold.
Then came the elegant Dy-Liacco's! Bert and Veny
danced the Rumba - exhibition style and it was all very
mesmerizing. Graceful and very well performed
indeed.
The last but not the least of our birthday celebrant
performers was Merlin Martin - and with our maestra
Naomi; we expected a great performance and they did
not fail us. Naomi started with a George Canseco
number - Ako'y Pilipino - accompanied by Ed Jose. The
group sang the medley with Naomi and again - our pride
as Filipinos got asserted. Then Merlin and Naomi did
the duet they performed at the Cultural Show - a year
ago; and we were wowed by the beautiful duet of "
Ako'y Anak ng Dalita ".
Upon the request of Reggie and Rosie, Rudy Julian sang
a reprise of the kundiman he sang to wife Boots also
during the Cultural Show and it was also a knock out
number. Also upon Reggie's request - one of the guests -
a Brother Sabado - from the Franciscan Order -doing
missionary work in Kenya,Uganda and Sudan - did a
religious musical number for us. BTW, FAS and guests
passed the donation basket for the Brother and came up
with $140 on the collection.
The Los Lolo's - Ed Jose, Arthur Mateos and Roger
Gutierrez also did three numbers - " Ewan ; Silayan and
a Beatle song . I swear they did sounded so much better
in practice the night before at our place. But it did not
matter - they will " BE BACK " again another occasion
- to redeem themselves.

The dancing part of the party was spectacular - with the
ladies doing most of the work - as usual; Todo-todo;
Electric Slide and other line dances; and the cha-cha;
twist; rock in roll; swing; and discoing - with the zumba
experts - Boots, Veny, Cathy, Rosie and Baby leading the
way. Ed Simeon and Ed Jose did their moves too; as did
the husband and wife team of Rudy and again Boots
doing some fancy legworks. Roger and I did our very
own clumsy moves - and we just loved dancing.
The games were all very hilarious. The first was the test
of touch - if the wife will be able to recognize the touch of
the loved one. We blindfolded Boots Julian and
requested five of the men to extend their palms for Boots
to touch - and she did pick Rudy correctly. That is love.
Then came the leg recognition. This time Ely Jose was
blindfolded - and five men and one woman was asked to
expose and cross their legs. Ely will touch the legs and
guess which ones is Ed's. Ely easily passed Ed Simeon,
Allyn Pierce and Mimie Canlas. Then she came to
Roger's legs and to the delight of the guests; she kept on
rubbing Roger's legs - while I almost passed out
hysterically since Roger was all so tickled and getting red
by the minute but could not pass a sound - lest he be
recognized. The crowd was all so delighted and were all
floored with laughter. Finally, after passing Merlin; Ely
guessed Ed's leg correctly.
The night ended on a very high note. With everybody
feeling elated and happy by another successful event by
FAS. It was truly amazing if we reflect on it - how much
talent and genuine personalities we have in such a small
organization. The key element is cooperation - and this
was truly manifested in the Quarterly Birthday
Celebration. We cannot thank them enough for such a
thrilling and fun time. The take out left over food was the
icing on the cake. As I told Marlene - we made profit
since the food we took home was as delightful as the ones
we enjoyed during the party. The fun part was the
making " balot" with everyone else doing the same. This
made the cleaning job after the party too easy - hardly a
chore at all.
We definitely miss the Rodrigueras and all those not
present to enjoy the event. BTW, picture taking was
done by Safy Farag, Reggie Mallabo and Ed Simeon. To
all concerned please send them to the Rodrigueras. I am
pretty sure - Fanny and Benny can do miracles to create
another edition of the newsletter Celebrate.
