Principles of the Knights of Columbus

Charity - Our Catholic faith teaches us to “Love thy neighbor as thyself.” Unity - None of us is as good as all of us. Members of the Knights of Columbus all know that – together – we can accomplish far more than any of us could individually. Fraternity - In the Knights of Columbus, we watch out for and take care of one another.

THE KNIGHTS ARE A GREAT SUPPORTER OF OUR SEMINARIANS. BELOW IS AN UPDATE FROM SEMINARIAN EDOUARD: Dear Brother Joseph Solomon, Thank you for your email. This year has gone very well. It has been wonderful to dive into Theology, and being here in Rome at the "heart of the Church" has brought many blessings. It is particularly enlightening to meet seminarians and religious from all over the world who are here for studies. The Church really is universal! I still have three more years here in Rome before ordination to the priesthood (God willing!). The custom at the seminary is that we stay in Europe the summer after our first year, so I won't be coming back to the US this summer. I'll be helping at a parish in France for a month, and then spending some time with a group here in Italy (and also in the States) called Comunità Cenacolo (www.comunitacenacolo.org). So next time I'll be back in the USA will be summer 2017. Thank you to you and to the entire council for staying in touch, for your support, and for your prayers. God bless Edouard Guilloux CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OF OUR KNIGHTS FOR ALL OF

THE ACCOMPLISHMENTS THAT MADE THIS YEARS SCRAPBOOK POSSIBLE.

NICE WORK TO ALL OF THOSE THAT SUPPORTED THIS YEARS FISH FRY WHICH RAISED

OVER A $1000 FOR THE COUNCIL.

The Knights of Council 7877 raised funds for the KOVAR charity on 16-17 April. KOVAR is a

Virginia Knights of Columbus Charity established in 1971 to provide financial assistance to

the intellectually disabled through grants and home loans. The funds collected by the

Knights support: group home loans, transportation, group home furnishings, training, and

Special Olympics.

Over 17 Knights participated and contributed about 95 man-hours to the effort. Knights

collected all day on Saturday the 16th at the 610 Car Wash and at all Masses on Saturday

evening and Sunday. Many family members assisted the Knights at each of the locations

and times. The collection raised approximately $2000 for the charity, for a total of over

$4000 for the year.

Incoming Grand Knight Report – Walter Lamb

As the newly elected Grand Knight for 2016-2017, I am truly humbled with this

deeply rewarding opportunity to serve the Parish, SWOY Community and my

Brother Knights. I will not pretend that I know what to expect, but am

comforted with having the support of our Council behind me. With our

charitable hearts and selfless devotion I believe we can accomplish great

things.

KNIGHT OF THE YEAR – SK DAVID THOMA Due to his consistent hard work and dedication. He is the Treasurer of the Council, Director of the “Keep Christ in Christmas Program”, Usher, and outstanding volunteer and supporter of many Council events. He led the efforts to find our septic tank that was a back breaking effort, but saved the Council great sums of money. He was instrumental in the coordination of the HVAC replacement which replaced the old oil heating with state of the art Heat Pump heating and air conditioning system.

GRAND KNIGHT FAREWELL MESSAGE

DAN BOLAS – 2014-2016 What a couple of years it has been! A lot has happened these past two years with Fr. Widmer Council. I want to thank all my close friends and Brother Knights for the help and support you all have given me over this period. The journey does not stop here! I will be moving forward as District #11 District Deputy, following in the footsteps of WDD Mark Janda, a great supporter of all of the Councils. He has been invaluable to me as a mentor and friend. I would like to especially recognized the Council Trustees of SK Jim Everett, SK Bill Emond and SK Frank Santana who have been superstars for the Council this past year. Special Thanks to Fr. DeMartino and Fr. Killian for all of their support!

Fr. Widmer Council #7877 is one of the most active and successful Councils in the State of Virginia, being awarded the Star Council status for the past two years with the State Deputy Awards, Columbian Awards, Fr. McGivney Awards and the Founder’s Awards. We also were selected for the Best Large Council Newsletter (2015) and Best Large Council Scrapbook (2016). We have replaced the HVAC in the Council home (oil to heat pump), insulated the roof and repaired the septic system. We have been highly successful in the Ultrasound Initiative providing a mobile Ultrasound to the Fredericksburg Pregnancy Center. Fr. Widmer leads the way in supporting other great programs like Mary’s Shelter, KOVAR, Keep Christ in Christmas, March for Life and our own Outreach Program at SWOY.

The Margaret Ladies have been the backbone of the Council events helping at every major event and baking up a storm raising money in support of the Council, Seminarians and the Parish. I would not have successful without Deb at my side keeping me motivated and providing great advice and baked goods!

Your new Grand Knight Walter Lamb is well trained and will be at the helm, but he will need all the help he can muster! It is hard to raise funds for our charities without volunteers, especially to chair one of our many events. These activities individually really don’t require much time when we have enough people to help out. To modify President Kennedy’s great quote, “Do not ask what my Council do for me? But, instead ask, “What can I do for MY Council and MY Parish?”

You would be surprised how “One Knight Can Make a Difference!” Ask a Catholic man if he would like to join the Knights of Columbus! We have grown over 50 new Knights in the past two years. Keep up the great work!!

I have been very proud to be your Grand Knight of Fr. Widmer Council and look forward to supporting many outstanding events in the future.

GOING FISHING!!! Time to Relax!!

Holy Trinity Assembly 2520 Report July 2016: Worthy Brother Knights, I am Mike Ferry of Fr. Widmer Council and Holy Trinity Assembly. I have the honor of serving as the Faithful Navigator for the Holy Trinity Assembly for the next fraternal year. On behalf of the entire Holy Trinity Assembly, I want to offer my congratulations to Past Grand Knight Dan Bolas for his exceptional success as Grand Knight and to incoming Grand Knight Walter Lamb and his officers we offer our prayers and support for continued and new successes during the coming fraternal year. For those of you who may not be familiar with the 4th Degree or with our assembly, the 4th Degree is known as the Patriotic Degree. One of the primary activities of the assembly is to provide honor guards at diocesan, parish and civic events.

Our assembly draws its members from three councils: Fr. Widmer at St. William of York, Fr. Cappadano at Quantico and Potomac at St. Francis of Assisi. We meet the 1st Tuesday each month, usually at the Fr. Widmer council home; saying the Rosary at 7:30 and starting the meeting at 8:00 pm. If you are interested in learning more about the 4th Degree, the assembly, or how to join us, I encourage you to talk to your Grand Knight or contact me or one of the Assembly officers. There are two 4th Degree exemplifications in the state each year. The next one will be held on November 5th at the Kroger Center in Richmond. I will be sharing details with the Grand Knights very soon. Fraternally, Mike Ferry Faithful Navigator Holy Trinity Assembly #2520
