Design Solution

Girls in rural India don’t get educated due to a number of social, political and economical factors.

Design Problem

Create awareness to raise money for girl child education. Create awareness in India so that girls are educated. Use the money to fund a school in rural India.

“1 in every 100 girls in rural India graduates grade 12”

“when they (girls) are given a better chance – above all, a decent education – something miraculous happens..”

Methodology

Since my project has a dual target I have been working on both aspects of it somewhat simultaneously.

For the awareness and fundraising part I have been researching pre-existing models that have raised money and awareness for a cause. I have been talking to people who are aready in this field of work and I have looked at previous campaigns for social good that revolve around education. Also, I tried to create prototypes that could potentially raise money.

For the India leg of my project I have been emailing and talking to people in India who work in the field of child education, gender inequality, development of rural India. Through these people I am trying to understand the various factors that result in girls not getting the education they deserve.

I then hope to use this information to create 2 campaigns and raise money.

Main Research

Survey to prove the value of education

Everyday there are new articles that highlight the value of educating a girl. People have also speculated that education can be the solution to poverty in the world. “Half the Sky”, by Nicholas Kristoff and Sheryl WuDunn show the injustice that girls face, and how education can be elemental in erradicating those evils.

“You cannot begin to understand development without putting girls and

women at the heart of your aid policies”

The present condition for girl child education

Speaking to people in India, has shown that there is still a huge number of girls that are not being educated. There is a massive disparity among girls and boy education. And also, there is a lack of infrastructure for girl child education. The government has monetary incentives for people who educate their daughters. Bihar and Orissa are the states that have the lowest rates of education.Sources in India report that apart from economical reasons, people are still hesitant to educate girls because they don’t see value in it. Also, a very well educated girl could be a threat to men in society, as she maybe smarter than them.

First Design Thoughts

For my first sub projects related to this project, I broke up the task at hand into 5 parts. I created a survey to strengthern my argument on why I believe in the value of education. Then I created some branding for my project, so that I have some identity for further use. I also did research on “Half the Sky” by Nicholas kristoff and Sheryl WuDunn. I pulled alarming statistics related to girls and created a poster. I Also created an inphoraphic to visualise the small number of girls that actually graduate school in India. And lastly, I created a few posters that had small but quick messages for people to support Girl Child Education in rural India.

Midterm Prototypes

For the mid term proto types I thought of quick easy ways I could raise money and create awareness for my project. I came up with a couple of ideas. I attended a charity run on Sunday and I put a box there for people to drop donations into. I asked some of my friends and family what they thought was the value of education and asked them to write it on a donation for me. And lastly, I made postcards using the previous visual campaign that I distributed to 4 Indian restaurnats with envelopes. Hoping that they would hand them out along with the cheque at the end of meal for the customers to leave a donation. Apart from this I have also been talking and emailing people in India to further my project.

Doing this, I only managed to raise a collective sum of 98$. I tried to target different groups of people for all three of these methods. While carrying out the task I ran into a couple of problems. The restaurants had a lot of logistical problems, I almost never met someone who had the authority to accept my proposition. When talking to my friends, they didnt have substantial money on them, only a few dollars. But it was a good learning experience.

Moving Forward

Moving forward, I still need a lot of work on my project. I need to decide the different aspects of the campaigns and what I want to communicate. And what the best to communicate the same would be. Also, I still need to tease out the second part of my project, where exactly will the money that I rasie go? I also need to increase my research in India to decide what problem I am targetting. And of course I need to find more concrete ways to raise money.
