Now entering its thirty-thirdyear, the Chequamegon Festival’slong term success is directly linkedto the support of the area’s localcommunities. The tireless efforts ofmany from the Hayward, Cable,Drummond, Seeley, Namakagon,Barnes, Delta and surrounding com-munities is the driving force behindthe event weekend activities.

It takes a volunteer army to runa large event. Nowhere does thatvolunteer effort come through betterthan these small northwestern Wis-consin towns. Individuals as well asschool, church, civic and other com-munity groups make up the spec-trum of volunteers. Staffing a myriadof assignments, the volunteer team’sdedication and enthusiasm is evi-dent. Taking great pride in what theydo, the volunteers are essential tothe Chequamegon’s operations.

In appreciation of those commu-nity efforts the Chequamegon Festi-val has financially supported manyarea groups, organizations andfundraisers. Each year, all volunteergroups are provided a cash contribu-tion as a thank you for their help. Inaddition the event holds annualmemberships in many local trailadvocacy organizations, museumsand other community organizations. Many other community events aresupported by contributions of cash, merchandise and equipment use.High school scholarships, specialevent sponsorships and individual-in-need fund raisers are all beneficiaries

–Gary Crandall aka The Fatman

In 1983, Gary Crandall was among thetwenty-seven pioneers who rode in theinaugural Chequamegon 40. Since then, with the able assistance of his experi-enced race staff, he has directed theevent through the decades. In 2003, asrecognition of the event’s significance inthe history of the sport and as a credit tohis event management team, he wasinducted into the Mountain Biking Hall ofFame now located in the Marin Museumof Bicycling in Fairfax, California. This winter I started to take anew look at my personal health andwell-being. After years of encourag-ing tens of thousands of people totake part in our varied northlandactive sporting events, it was time totake some of my own advice.

I have been monitoring my bloodsugar levels for some time with acautious eye toward my dad’s side ofthe family’s diabetic history. Thiswinter, after blood work checkuprevealed that my A1C level had redlined, it was a real wake up call. Ivowed to live a healthier lifestyle formyself, spouse, two children and toyou, all my Chequamegon friends.

After all, this guy (affectionatelyknown as the Fatman) does work forLife Time Fitness, the Healthy Way ofLife Company. It was high time toget on the program.

On the diet side of things, I’vetaken a close look at my carbohy-drate intake. I started to cut outwhite rice, pasta, potatoes, bread, scones (no, don’t take the sconesaway too!), pretty much all beer andwine, and quite a few other carb-loaded items. I added in more fruits, veggies and protein. The plan was toavoid the easy indulgences that addcarbs and calories. Did I mention I’vecut way back on my pizza intake aswell? After all, this was a seriousredirection of my dietary regimen.

To augment the dietary changes,I picked up the regular exercise. Hik-ing, snowshoe outings and bicycletraining when it was cold. This April,I signed up for the 30 Days of Bikingin April program that has gainedgreat popularity. The April commit-ment will finally get me into thehealthy habit of riding my bicycle toand from work. I’m starting to burnmore calories than I’m taking in.

I’ve lost some pounds and planto lose some more. One goal is toknock a half hour off my Firehouse50 time trial performance from theprevious years. It won’t put our teamon the podium by any means, butwill have me riding more closely totheir abilities. The general good newsis that I am feeling better for it dayby day.

But enough about me. I hope allof you too use the motivation of rid-

Chequamegon History 101

Martel’s Pot Holeobtain a land grant to obtainapproximately two hundred acres ofland free of charge. He and his fami-ly had moved to the area from Mar-tel, Wisconsin. Martel is a popularNorwegian name reflective of theThompson family’s heritage. It wasthis connection to Martel that gavethe pot hole its name. Thompsonwas the Packwawong area’s firstpostmaster before the area laterbecame known as Seeley.

In 1924 he also bought the JohnPeterson farm which is the land nowbeing developed as the Birkie Ridgetrailhead just off Highway 63 northof Seeley. My friend, Darrell Thomp-son who still lives in the Haywardarea, grew up just north of hisgrandfather’s property.

When I first moved to this regionin the late 1970’s, the road we raceon called Boedecker Road wasreferred to as Thompson Fire Lane.Originally it was John ThompsonFire Lane, named after Darrell’sgrandfather. Later it was referred toas Hans Thompson Fire Lane. It wasDarrell’s cousin Hans who owned theland that included Martel’s Pot Hole.Later the road was renamedBoedecker Road after Ted Boedeck-er who had bought the old MuellerFarm in the vicinity. Many of thearea’s old timers still refer toBoedecker as Thompson Fire Lane.

The next time you take that dropdown in Martel’s Pot Hole take aminute to reflect on the rich human, natural and geologic history of theunique spot. Now, how the Chequa -megon Pirates came to inhabit Mar-tel’s Pot Hole and what became ofthem is a story for another historylesson.

The plunge into Martel’s Pot Holejust north of the County OO Roadcrossing off Janet Road is one of theiconic features in the Chequamegon40 race course. Situated just shy ofthe middle of the forty mile route, this section represents one of thefew true technical aspects of thelong race route. It also sends the rid-ers through a very unique geologicfeature, a result of the region’sglacial history.

Racers approach Martel’s PotHole via a steep, eroded technicaldrop that traverses a serious sandtrap at the bottom. The face slap-ping black berry bushes reachinginto the sunny area of the narrowtrail have been trimmed back toopen the way. As the trail continuesit crosses a steep sided esker thatcovers the length of the kettle holewhich gives the area its name. Lookup esker and kettle hole in yourglacial features dictionary and youwill see what an interesting spot it is.

Earlier this summer I was asked“Who is Martel of Martel’s Pot Hole?”Realizing that I did not know thelocal history of this unique area Iinvestigated via the local library’scollection of area history books. When I didn’t find the information Iwas seeking there, I called a friendwho is generationally tied to thearea’s history. I found the historicalresource I was looking for in mylong-time friend Darrell Thompsonwho filled me in on the Martel’s PotHole history.

In 1900, John Thompson (Dar-rel’s grandfather) settled in thePacwawong area of the NamakagonRiver valley. He was one of the firstsettlers in the area. As a Civil Warveteran, John Thompson was able to

Race Day Parking TipsWhen 3,100 racers, their support

crew and spectators invade Cableand Hayward over the race weekend, one might ask, “Where does every-one park?” Hopefully everyoneleaves their vehicles where it is legal, considerate and safe.

Common sense and courtesy pre-vail when you drive to the start lineson race day. You will not find thebuilt-for-the-masses urban parkinginfrastructure to which you may beaccustomed in the tiny towns of therace venue. Remember, your racemorning vehicular actions will leave alasting impression on the area’s resi-dents and law enforcement officials.Make that impression a positive onewith a bit of preplanning.

First, remember that the Cableand Hayward business communitywill appreciate it greatly if you donot fill up their business lots on racemorning. Their regular customerswill need those spaces while you areoff on a wooded cycling adventure. Also, remember to observe all post-ed restrictions and respect privateproperty access when parking onresidential side streets.

For your information we haveposted both Hayward and Cableparking information maps found onthe www.cheqfattire.com web page.To provide assistance on the Satur-day race day, yellow-vested, raceofficial parking monitors will helpdirect you to designated large lots inCable and Hayward.

Help keep parking confusion to aminimum by noting both the parkingrecommendations and no parkingrestrictions listed below. All recom-mended lots are within a short bikeride from the cross-county eventstart lines. All listed church parkingareas are available pending raceweekend restrictions that may berequired for planned church activityevents (weddings, funerals, etc)

50 Ways Essay Contest ExcerptsThe roots of the 50 Ways to Ride the Chequamegon essay contest go back to 1999, the first year of the registration lottery. Ourgoal with the contest was to give those who were unlucky in the lottery drawing a second chance to plead their case for inclusion.Once again this year we dug deep into our archives to find some gems from years gone by.

Not all were winners but the examples of contest submissions will give you an idea of the effort people put into their essays to wina reserved spot in the sold-out Chequamegon Fat Tire Festival. Remember you don’t have to be Shakespeare to win and you can’twin if you don’t try.

Gary Gary(sung to the tune of Daisy Daisy)

Gary Gary tell me it isn't true,I've failed the lottery now for year num-ber two,It won't be the same in September, notto race I can't remember. But I'd look sweet upon the seat of mybicycle built for two.

Gary Gary what am I going to do?

I'm half-crazy but I will not beg of you,If you will not let me in, on you will bethe sin,Because I'll be damned if I can't bejammed on a bicycle built for two.

Gary Gary lover of all fine brew,Crack open a cold one and say this songwill do,I need a reserved race entry, so pleasebe complimentary,Give the nod; be like a god, and say,"Race your bicycle built for two."

Ode to Forty

O Forty! Hear my song of sorrow ringHow could you have overlooked mylongingLeft me lying upon broken wing

In dirt, in mud, painfully subdued by flattire and broken chairMy heart has always been fixed on youPushed to limits beyond what my imagi-nation can sustainEach year in September I'm born anew

En mass the harmonics of knobbywheels spunLift to the forests their sweetest tuneO'er Rosie's Field under adoring sunA rulling din of bliss upon which to com-mune

With adrenaline's warm embrace youcover meAs you carefully mix joy with paintYour fire Tower stones bring a wealth ofdiscovery In torrid heat or pouring rain.

An Whoa! Could these masses you'vecollectedBe here to share in your melody's goodgift?Pushing forth along, yet invisibly con-nectedYou bring us home together, never leav-ing us adrift

Oh Forty! Lower your earAnd listen to my song of hope ring clear.

–Richard Werebowenko

Chequamegon's Twist of Hamlet

To race, or not to race: this is afoolish questionWhether 'tis nobler to ride andsufferOr to sit on your tail and drink afine aleO' to attack the culvert as wewheeled through Rosie's FieldFighting the pain one racesdown Phipps fire LaneO' to grow weary there is not atimeAlthough legs may burn andgears may be full of slimeOne is to continue with power tothe partiers atop Fire TowerOnly to exitous the dark to theray of hope at the hill of Tele-markO' to finish is to start as wedream and excite about nextyear's delight.

cent to their assigned start gate. At6:00 a.m. riders can move their bikesinto their assigned start gates andtake a position on the street. At hisdiscretion the start line chief mayallow earlier line up. Prior to thegates opening, riders should line upwith their bikes on the grassy areasadjacent to their start gate. Once open, access to the designatedstart gates will be allowed by specif-ic race number only. Priority in eachgate is available on a first-come,first-served basis. We ask that all riders maintain order,be courteous and line up safely atthe start lines. Rider entrance toeach gate is via the clearly markedentrance at the back of the startgate. Do not climb over the sidelinefencing. Help us maintain our valuedmunicipal permissions by observingthe posted bike lay down times andlocations.

Ghost Bikes at the Start LineIn Chequamegon start-line oper-

ations, the term “ghost bikes” refersto unattended placeholder bikes inthe start line area. These ghost bikesfall into two basic categories: bikesWITHOUT RACE NUMBERSattached to them, and bikes WITHRACE NUMBERS attached. In eithercase, ghost bikes belong to regis-

Past year’s improvements in startgate layout and procedures havelessened race morning confusion onboth the Chequamegon 40 andShort & Fat start lines. Prior to racemorning, each participant is assigneda specific start gate. That gateassignment is printed on both theTyvek body number and laminatedhandlebar number. At the start lines, the seven Chequamegon 40 gatesand six Short & Fat start gates areclearly marked at the respective startlines.

Permission is granted from theCity of Hayward and Town of Cableto close down Main Street for theChequamegon 40 and RandysekRoad for the Short & Fat events at6:00 a.m. It is important that you donot lay down your bike on the streetsin your start gate before the streetclosing officially goes into effect.

In both Hayward and Cable thestart lines are in close proximity tofire departments and ambulance ser-vices. These essential services mustbe able to access their service areasvia the customary roads. Since theofficial closures do not go into effectuntil 6:00 a.m., early morning localtraffic is also inconvenienced withearly bike lay downs.

Those arriving before the officialstreet closing time can line up adja-

bers must be attended by the riderno later than 9:45 a.m. or they willbe removed from the start line.

At those specific times, theevent’s Bandit Patrol volunteers willremove ghost bikes from the startarea and place them in the markedimpoundment area immediatelyadjacent to the start line. With this inmind, please plan your last-minuteneeds in a timely fashion.

Riders who have their bikesremoved from the start line will losetheir start position and be requiredto re-enter their start gate at theback of the lineup. If you value yourstart line position, be sure you arewith your race bikes by the postedtimes. The Chequamegon Fat TireFestival is not responsible for bikesleft unattended in the start gate areaor bikes that have been removedfrom the start gate area.

tered participants who plan onreturning to them just prior to thestart.

Ghost bikes are left at the startline while their riders are warming upor standing in the portable toilet lineor perhaps having just one more cupof coffee before the start. Weassume that riders have every inten-tion of returning to the start line toclaim or replace their ghost bikesjust prior to the start.

As the start time approaches, ifthe owner does not return in a timelyfashion, ghost bikes are problematic. For that reason, please note ourremoval policy as it relates to ghostbikes:

All ghost bikes without racenumbers must be removed by theirowners and replaced with race bikeswith race numbers no later than9:30 a.m.
