FastLink’s telephony, data andbroadband services can be linkedinto a wide range of network struc-tures, as it supports point-to-point,point-to-multipoint, tree and ringarchitectures. This provides thenetwork operator with maximumflexibility in selecting a suitablestructure for his network.

There are powerful upgrade kitsavailable for both setting up newnetworks and safeguarding currentand future investments, ensuringthe provision of broadband ser-vices with the aid of xDSL-technol-ogy.

Using existing twin copper cablesin the subscriber access area,ADSL can be employed to transferdata at up to 8 Mbit/s (down-stream) and 800 kbit/s (upstream)between subscriber and InternetService Provider.

With high-speed Internet accessvia SHDSL data and voice is trans-ported using ATM at speeds of upto 2.3 Mbit/s.

The integration of ADSL and/orSHDSL components into FastLinknetworks will supplement theTDM-based narrowband signals byATM-based broadband signals.

This means that ATM-based broad-band transmission over the entiretransmission link, from the ISPinterface in the OLT up to the DSLmodem (broadband NT or NIC) atthe subscriber is possible.

The Optical Network Unit (ONU),as the central system componentfor telephony, data and broadbandservices, combines multiplexer andtransport facilities for optimumconfiguration of telecommunica-tion, city or corporate networks.

The network operator has a choiceof different ONU types for con-necting up to 2048 narrowbandand up to 80 broadband sub-scribers; FTTC variants for outdooruse or FTTO/FTTB variants forindoor operation.

A number of ONU variants providethe option of ODT functionality, sothat the ONU can also be used asan active hybrid distribution unitand thereby making a significantcontribution to reducing costs.

The number of multiplexers andthe number of interfaces can beexpanded as required, rangingfrom the small starter systemthrough to the comprehensive net-work.

A wide range of the latest trans-mission technologies is employedto ensure that the ONU can beused in all network areas.

Transmission with wavelength divi-sion multiplexing (WDM) on anoptical glass fiber can span up to50 km (without repeaters) andwhereas transmission with HDSLon e.g. 0.8-mm copper cable canspan up to 8 km (dependent oncable type).

The Optical Line Termination (OLT)is the FastLink component whichterminates the glass fiber and/orcopper cable network and imple-ments the interfaces to theexchange, to the data network andthe ATM network. The connectionto the exchange is made directlyvia digital 2-Mbit/s interfaces, withsignaling complying with the inter-national V5.1/V5.2 standards. Ifthese interfaces are not available,the OLT is connected using voicefrequency (VF) or 2-Mbit/s inter-faces with Channel Associated Signaling (CAS).

The broadband connection to theInternet Service Provider (ISP) ismade using IP routers or an ATMswitch function either via an Ether-net interface or via an optical STM-1 point-to-point connection.

In addition the OLT is the centralaccess point for the AccessIntegra-tor network management systemboth via a QD2 interface and via anSNMP interface.

FastLink’s Network Terminations(NTs) provide subscribers directlywith both high-speed digital inter-faces for online services and multi-media applications, such as video-on-demand, fast Internet or tele-learning, and also for all other stan-dard bit rates.

The NTs are compact desktopunits that connect via copper orfiber-optic cable to the ONU or theOLT cover a wide range of attrac-tive subscriber services.

Thus e.g. the ADSL NTs providean Ethernet interface for high-speed Internet connections andsimultaneous S0 or a/b interfacesfor voice transmission.

With FastLink’s “medium to large”Optical Network Units, the ONU 250 FTTB/FTTC and ONU 1000 FTTB/FTTC, up to 2048narrowband and up to 80 broad-band subscriber lines can be pro-vided.

The ONUs are available for bothindoor operation (FTTB) and out-door operation (FTTC) and containsall the infrastructure componentssuch as shelter/rack, internal orexternal power supply with andwithout battery backup, terminalpanels for system and subscriberinterfaces (MDF), 2-Mbit/s distribu-tion frames (DDF) and optical dis-tributor (ODF).

The enclosures for outdoor deploy-ment offer optimum security, oper-ating temperature and operability.The enclosed, double-walled shel-ter keeps out e.g. moisture andsmall animals, as well as maintain-ing a predetermined operatingtemperature range.

Side doors and front doors provideeasy access to the distributors forthe cabling as well as for operatingand maintaining the components.

For indoor operation the ONUs areinstalled in racks. The racks complywith the ETS standard and canmount up to five subracks asrequired.

Multiplexers and transport sys-tems of the ONUs consist of oneor more plug-in units in doubleEurocard format. These units aremounted in 19” or ETS shelves.The shelves (beside UMX2S2 andUMXLS) are equipped with termi-nal panels, which significantlyreduces the work of installation.

The central management, measur-ing and power supply functions arerealized in the COMPS2 (ONU 250 FTTB/FTTC) or COMPS(ONU 1000 FTTB/FTTC) shelves.

With FastLink’s “smallest” ONUs,the ONU 20 FTTO and the ONU 30 FTTB, up to 20 or 30 sub-scriber lines can be provided. Thecompact unit in a desktop housing(ONU 20 FTTO) or in a wall hous-ing (ONU 30 FTTB) for use withinbuildings with a strongly distrib-uted subscriber structure guaran-tees fast connection of new sub-scribers and is particularly suitableof use by business customers.

These ONUs are constructed fromthe following components:

Access Multiplexer AMX

As an access multiplexer with V5.1signaling the AMX provides up to30 subscriber interfaces with each64 kbit/s for a wide range of ser-vices. Subscriber channels andV5.1 signaling channel, multiplexedto form a 2-Mbit/s signal, are trans-mitted to the exchange via fiber-optic or copper cable. The AMXcan be connected directly via the2-Mbit/s interface to a digitalexchange.

The following units are part of theAMX:

• Central unit CUA

• Line cards (LCs) for narrowbandapplications

• Terminal panels for system andsubscriber interfaces

• AC connecting unit and splicecassette (only ONU 30 FTTB)

The ONU 20 FTTO is supplied withpower via an external poweradapter or by a backup battery.Direct power supply with –48 V isalso possible.

The ONU 30 FTTB is supplied withthe required operating voltage viathe local power grid. The internalpower supply module with backupbattery converts the operating volt-age into the necessary direct cur-rent supply. Subscriber Interfaces

The subscriber interfaces areimplemented by the LC of themultiplexer and the 2-Mbit/s lineequipment.

The OLT, as a central access tothe local exchange, the data net-works and ATM/IP networks, isphysically installed in one or moreETS racks which are set up withinbuildings on the exchange site.

The racks can be equipped with upto four shelves. In addition eachrack contains a terminal panel forpower supply, QD2 and clock dis-tribution.

For connecting glass fiber cables,depending on the number of con-nections required and the local cir-cumstances, a splice box or anoptical distribution frame (ODF)can be mounted in the rack.

For broadband connection to theInternet Service Provider an IProuter with ATM switch function isinstalled in the OLT rack.

The number of racks concernedand how they are equipped, aswell as the rack cabling are project-dependent.

The units are connected via thebackplane of the shelf, on whichthe terminal panel with its connec-tors for external and internalcabling is also mounted. The internconnections typically include con-nections between the individualshelves and connections betweenthe shelf and the rack terminalpanel. All other connections, to theexchange, the data network, theInternet or to the ONU, are exter-nal connections.

The Network Terminations (NT) aredeployed on the subscriber side,but can also be used on the net-work side as Line Terminations(LT). The NTs are linked to either aline card of the corresponding mul-tiplexer or to a line termination unitof the 2-Mbit/s line equipment viacopper or fiber optic cable.

Network Termination Unit NTU

Up to two data terminals withinterfaces in acc.to ITU-T recom-mendations can be connected viathe NTU at a Uk0 interface with2B1Q-encoding. The Uk0 interfacecan be implemented e.g. by theIUL82 line card of the multiplexerAMXC.

The NTU can be equipped with upto two (also different) interfacemodules which each implementone of the following interfaces:

• V.24, V.35, V.36, X.21 with subrates up to 64 kbit/s

• V.35, V.36, X.21 for 64 kbit/s or128 kbit/s

• G.703 codirectional for 64 kbit/s

Data Network Unit DNU01SD

The DNU01SD is used for synchro-nous data transmission with highdata rates of n x 64 kbit/s (maxi-mum 512 kbit/s) via copper cable.

The DNU01SD is equipped asstandard with the X.21 interface.Data interfaces V.35 or V.36 areimplemented by additional inter-face modules.

The network interface is providedby a transmission module whichmust also be included in the linecard CPF2 of the AMXC. Followingmodules are available:

Digital leased lines n x 64 kbit/s (n = 1 to 31) via a glass fiber canbe set up with the NT22OV for thefollowing interfaces:

The NT22OV can be equipped withup to two (possibly differing) inter-face modules.

The V.35 and V.36 interfaces oper-ate either in transparent or in pro-tocol mode. In protocol modepoint-to-multipoint connections canalso be set up.

In addition transparent transmis-sion of 2 Mbit/s acc. to ITU-T V.35is possible.

On the network side the unit isconnected to an optical line termi-nation unit LTO/LT via 2 x 2 Mbit/s.For this connection the NT22OVuses a wavelength of 1300 nm.

Power is supplied to the NT22OVvia an external AC adapter eitherwith 115 V or with 230 V AC ordirectly with 24 V DC.

Network Termination NT12C andNT22O

This NTs each contain one 2-Mbit/s line termination units:

ATM Multiplexer Mini-DSLAM or Micro-DSLAM

The ATM multiplexers Mini- andMicro-DSLAM are a cost-optimizedvariant of the broadband equip-ment of FastLink and offer anATM-based network solution com-bining both broadband and narrow-band services. All services aretransmitted in end-to-end connec-tions with the aid of ATM cellsfrom the ATM network to the sub-scriber and back again.

For simultaneous transmission ofvoice and for example Internetdata on a shared twin copper wiredifferent xDSL techniques areused:

• ADSL with bit rates up to 8 Mbit/s for the transport ofdata in the direction of the subscriber (downstream) and

800 kbit/s in the opposite direc-tion (upstream)

• SHDSL with bit rates of 2.3 Mbit/s in both directions

The Mini-/Micro-DSLAM termi-nates the subscriber network, con-centrates all the broadband andnarrowband traffic and directs it viaSTM-1, E3 or IMA interfaces to theATM network.

The Mini-/Micro-DSLAM is moni-tored, supplied and controlled viathe 10BaseT interface which is ona central unit.

The following units are part of theMini-/Micro-DSLAM:

Advantages of the Mini-/Micro-DSLAM

• Data and voice are transmittedsymmetrically as SHDSL multi-plex signals via a twin copperwire between the Mini-/Micro-DSLAM in the ONU and IADsinstalled at the subscribers. Nosplitter units are necessary.

• Transmission of n x E1 (n ≤ 8)by inverse multiplexing overATM (IMA).

• Alternatively to E1 (IMA) an E3or STM-1 signal can be used fortransmission between ONU andOLT.

• Interoperability with Voice overDSL (VoDSL) since the samecomponents and interfaces areused on the CPE and OLT side.

Access Multiplexer AMXC

Access multiplexer AMXC is a fur-ther development of the AMX anda cost-optimized implementationof the subscriber-side access toFastLink, which, by concentratingsubscriber interfaces, makes itpossible to connect large numbersof subscribers using the sametransmission capacity.

The AMXC provides on the exchangeside both the open V5.2 or V5.1interface and an FastLink-internalconcentrating V5C interface in con-junction with crossconnect multi-plexer CMXII-V5.x. Thus, concentra-tion rates of e.g. 4 : 1 are possiblewithin the ONU itself.

Monitoring, supply and control ofthe AMXC is performed over theQD2-slave interface by the centralmeasurement and power supplymodule COMPS or COMPS2.

The following units are part of theAMXC:

• Central unit CUAII

• Line cards (LCs) for narrowbandapplications

• Power supply unit PSU

Advantages of the AMXC

• Increase in subscriber concen-tration per multiplexer:A CUAII serves up to 16 LCs.For each LC up to 8 ISDN or 32POTS interfaces are available.

This means that for each AMXCup to 512 subscribers (POTS)can be connected.

• Saving transmission capacity onthe systems side through theproprietary V5C interfacebetween AMXC and CMXII.For each CUAII up to four2-Mbit/s signals are transmittedfrom the AMXC to the CMXII.When the full concentrator func-tion is utilized the capacity ofmax. four 2-Mbit/s signals canbe transmitted over one 2-Mbit/s link (feeder).

• Saving the CMXII and transmis-sion capacity on the systemside by direct connection of theAMXC to the exchange via 2-Mbit/s interfaces with V5.2protocol. When the full concen-trator function is utilized thecapacity of max. four 2-Mbit/ssignals can be transmitted overone 2-Mbit/s link (feeder). In thestandard variant two 2-Mbit/slinks are provided (protectionmode).

• AMXC concept for individual 2-Mbit/s signals allows differenttransport paths in the directionof the OLT. If, for example, anindividual 2-Mbit/s transportchannel fails, the AMXC trafficload can be routed via theremaining transport channels. Tominimize the number of sub-scribers who are affected by thefailure of a module or a trans-port channel, two CUAII unitscan be used. Both CUAII unitsdivide up the traffic load andeach serve eight LCs.

Line Termination Unit LTO

The optical line termination unitLTO uses a single mode glass fiberfor transmission of 2 x 2 Mbit/s insend and receive direction. Usingthe 1550 nm optical window forthe LTO/LT and the 1300 nm win-dow for the LTO/NT separates thedirections.

Management access for both units(LT and NT) is via the network-sideunit. The management data aretransmitted in the overhead chan-nel.

The AccessIntegrator (ACI),Siemens’ network managementsolution for access products,supports the entire scope ofFastLink’s telephony, data andbroadband services and providescontrol of the entire network withall its services, transport functionsand network elements from thetopography level, the ONU view,down to the plug-in unit view.

With their IP interface to the DataCommunication Network (DCN)the network elements can be con-trolled via QD2 and also via SNMP.The management channels arerouted inband or outband. A higher-ranking operation and maintenancesystem can use the CORBA orSNMP interface to conduct alarmsupervision, service creation andservice activation as well as linetests via the ACI.

In this way it is possible to controlthe entire network centrally fromone operator terminal with com-plete path management.

Fault Management

The entire network and everyfault are displayed down to thesmallest element. In the case ofpermanent faults the relevantfunctional unit is disconnectedand an alarm is sent over theTelecommunications Manage-ment Network (TMN).

Access control with subdividedauthentication classes conformsto today’s security requirements.
