Massena man, son prepare to showcase bikes in film shootBy BOB BECKSTEAD - FRIDAY, MARCH 9, 2012

MASSENA - A Massena man and his son will be seeing their specially built motorcycles on the big screen in the near future. Merlon Rogers and his son, Brad Rogers from B & M Performance Cycles were asked to build the bikes specifically for the film “Man Hunt.” B & M Performance Cycles offers complete customizing of bikes from their shop at 439 S. Main St.

The movie features a cast that includes World Wrestling Entertainment superstars Gene “Snitsky” Snisky, Sam “The Great Samu” Anoa’i and Afa Anoa’i Jr.; UFC fighter Ryan “Big Deal” Jim-mo; Jon Douglas Rainey from Discovery Channel’s TV show “It Takes a Thief”; and Tattoo Tony Rodriguez, the personal tattoo artist for musician, actor, director, screenwriter, producer and reality television personality Bret Michaels.

It’s produced by Walking Dead Films, which was launched in 2011 by CEO’s Jason Korner and Ed McKeever, and directed by writer/director Jay Lee, whose Hollywood credits includes directing such films as “Zom-bie Strippers,” “The Slaughter” and “Alyce.” Special effects are being handled by Tim Martin, also from Hollywood, who has worked special ef-fects for all of the Spiderman films, the X-Men films, “Hellboy,” War of the Worlds,” “The Thing” and other Hollywood blockbusters.

Merlon said they have made connections, including one with Tattoo Tony while traveling to different bike shows in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Mary-land and other sites. “I’ve been doing bike shows for a while. My son and I have been on a circuit working with these people. We show what our product is and what we can build. We go all over. It’s just promoting,” he said. “One thing led to another. We did a bunch of stuff with Tattoo Tony. He called one day and said I might have an opportunity for you,” Merlon said. That opportunity was a chance to showcase their motorcycles in “Man Hunt,” a film about hunters who have become the hunted. “Four hunters go hunting. They shoot wild animals as sport. Hillbilly hermits live there and start hunting the hunters,” Merlon said.

He said he talked with Tattoo Tony this week about the film, which will be shot in Pennsylvania. “He said things were looking really good. They’re hoping in April or May to get this going. They’re going to call me and let me know when they’re going to start shooting. It will probably be a month (to film). We’ll be there for a week for our part,” he said. For their part, Merlon said, “We’re going to be traveling down the road with them. We’ll pass vehicles on the road as we go and stop at a store. People will look at the bikes up close. When we are riding down the road, hunters stop in and buy some of Tattoo Tony’s whiskey.” The close-up shot will showcase their logo that they designed on the bikes, he said.

“This is a chance for us to get out there and have fun. It makes us feel good that people like our product, especially far away,” Merlon said. Building bikes has been their life, according to Merlon and Brad, who have more than 45 years of

experience between them. Merlon has been work-ing on bikes for 30 years.

“My father was a mechanic. When I was a kid I grabbed old Triumphs and BSAs left on the road with no paperwork and I’d get them running,” he said. Brad, 32, built his first bike - a custom-made Sportster - when he was 16 years old. “We buy the shell and fabricate it to what we want,” Merlon said. “We start with a vision and make changes along the way. It takes a lot of vision to see what you’re building,” Brad said.

Parts, Merlon said, come from “wherever. We make some of our own and buy things from large com-panies.” A fender alone might run $300, he said, noting a specially built bike can run from $15,000 to $100,000, “depending on what you want.” Once they begin the building process, it’s “trial and er-ror,” according to Brad, who said they put things together to make sure they fit, then take them apart and carefully put them back together for the final version.

“We might say, ‘I think this would look better.’ We pretty much imagine it in our mind,” Merlon said.

The average building time for one bike is three to six months, he said. “We’ve been doing one for a year,” he noted.

It’s not just for others, but for themselves, too, Mer-lon said. “We started doing them for everybody else. Then we said, ‘We’re doing this for everybody, let’s do it for ourselves,’” he said.

The sun is shining and spring is on us for now. I live in upstate New York, and that shit could change overnight around here. Back to your bike and the awesome riding season ahead of you. Before getting your iron horse out and blasting it down the open road for the first time this year. Here are eight tips that will help you kick off the 2012 riding season, making it a safer and less costly one!

TIP#1: FLUID LEVELS-Check all fluid levels before starting-Top off fluid’s if needed.-Warm engine before draining engine oil.-Replace oil filter

TIP#2: CABLES-Make sure all cables move freely, no fraying, no rust, and lube them with a quality cable lube

TIP#3: AIR FILTERRodent’s like to make winter homes with this area of the bike, so check this area out. Dirty filter will result in poor fuel economy, but with us hot rod bikes there is no such thing as good gas mileage. Keeping an eye on the air filter helps with easier starting, gas mileage and engine meltdown.-Inspect and clean, recharge, or replace

TIP#4: FUEL LEAKS-Check all fuel lines, oil lines, brake lines and your liquid cooled bikes the coolant hoses-Check for cracks, splits and loose fittings and clamps. Replace, if needed.

TIP#5: TIRES-Air pressure, this is a big one. Tires when they sit for any length of time, they like to lose air pressure. We have many customers come to the shop wonder-ing why they are handling funny, or wearing funny. Most of the time, their air pressure is off. Air pressure will affect handling, tread life, and your life!-Check air pressure before every ride

-Check for cracks, slices, and tread wear

TIP#6: CHAIN, BELT, & SPROCKETS-Check tension on belts and chain drives-Check procket wear and lube chain

TIP#7: BRAKES-Look for wear beyond 50%-Replace if needed-Brake rotor for warp-age and cracks

TIP#8: COMMON SENSEWell I’ve covered most of the basics with ya. Just give the whole bike from front to rear a real good once over inspection. “It’s your bike you should know how she looks and feels!”

But common sense isn’t common in some!

UPDATES AND LOWER PRICE FOR STREET PERFORMANCE TUNERFactory Engine Calibration Uploads Available Directly to Owners Harley-Davidson owners can now use the Screamin’ Eagle® Street Performance Tuner (P/N 41000008B, $249.95) to upload and install the latest factory ECM (electronic control module) calibrations to match specific hardware upgrades, including high-flow air cleaners, Street Performance mufflers, and Big Bore engine kits. Previously, an authorized Harley-Davidson dealer was required to complete these software uploads. The revised Street Performance Tuner also gives the owner the ability to view and clear ECM trouble codes, and to collect real-time vehicle data, which can then be displayed on a computer screen. Finally, Harley-Davidson has lowered the suggested retail price of the Street Performance Tuner to $249.95. With the Street Performance Tuner, the Harley-Davidson owner can install factory-calibrated ECM software that will deliver the best all-around performance for a specific model and its state of tune after EPA-compliant performance modifications are made to EFI-equipped Harley-Davidson models. The kit also includes the Vehicle Communications Interface (VCI) module that records up to 15 minutes of run-time data on up to 27 variables that can be downloaded to a PC. Using the included software, the motorcycle owner or a technician can evaluate engine operating parameters such as the air/fuel ratio, O2 sensor readings, engine speed and temperature, RPM and vehicle speed, throttle position, spark advance, and many more performance characteristics of the motorcycle. The VCI will also record and display service codes for troubleshooting and diagnostics.

On Sunday, February 26th, the Fast Lane Biker – New York Crew visited the Motorcyclepedia Museum in Newburgh, NY. The museum was established in April of 2011 by Ted Doering and his father Jerry. We were received with open arms and a personal tour by Ted and Jerry. There were many rich stories of the past and how the museum came to be.

Ted began building choppers in the late 1960s. Favoring the Harleys, he collected custom and original Harley Motorcycles and memorabilia. His father, Jerry, raced Indians in the late 1940s and began collecting in 1949. Over the past 60 years they have accumulated and created the world’s only Indian Motorcycle Time Line. The photos do not do it justice. This is a must see for all ages!

The Indian Time Line is just a part of the approximate 400 motorcycles in the museum, with the oldest dating back to 1897. Among other exhibits is Chopper City, the Wall of Death known as a Motodrome, and motorcycles originally built in Newburgh, New York (Pope).

The Fast Lane Biker Crew saw motorcycles from specific historic events such as, a police cycle that was part of President Kennedy’s motorcade the day he was assassinated, the motorcycle owned by Charles Lindberg, which he later traded to get an airplane, and choppers from the movie “Easy Rider”.

There is so much more to see and talk about. The Crew definitely recommends the Motorcyclepedia Museum for all enthusiasts! Stop by 250 Lake Street in Newburgh, NY and enjoy it as much as we did!

I thought well shit if she can do it so can I. I rode bitch for a few years with my ole man Chuckwagon and one day I decided it was time. I took the riding course at the local HD shop. It was well worth the money. Well, its been 3 years this summer I have been riding solo. I just absolutely love it at first I was scared but once you get on and go, it’s an amazing feeling. On occasion I still hop on the back of Chuckwagons scooter . But there’s nothing better than riding your own. If you think you cant do it. Just go for it. You wont ever regret it !!! The wind in your face the freedom of the open road the lifestyle and the best part is meeting tons of different people along the way who understand what it’s all about.!!! “TRY NOT TO CRY NEXT TIME”

Here’s my story: I am a brightly colored babe and I hear plenty of comments. A few years ago, while cocktail waitressing in Upstate New York, a college guy was chatting me up about my tattoos. What stood out about this conversation amid all the countless other times I’ve been asked, “who does your work?” was that he became argumentative with me after his second question, “Do you have a high pain tolerance or are you just kinky?”

Well, buddy, I may or may not be kinky, but my tattoos have nothing to do with my bedroom antics. The third option, that I love the art enough to endure a sting that I don’t enjoy, was unheard of to him. He

related tattooed women to whips and hot wax. Personally, I am not much of a pain fiend. The discomfort I’ve gone through to become heavily tattooed has been a trial, a journey and a learning experi-ence. The pride of having such beautiful skin is actually intensified by the fact that I withstood some torture under the tattoo machine. (Who you callin’ a wimp?! I have my armpits tattooed!)

Overall, I do enjoy the tattoo experience. The buzzing has a comforting drone, the atmosphere is inspiring, and the artists you meet are usually about as awesome as an empty stretch of highway. So, the moral of this story is, yes it hurts. Or may-be it’s whips and chains will cause me pains, but tattoos never leave me? Either one, just try not to cry next time.
